# Faith and Doubt **Summary.** Faith and doubt function as partners, not opposites, in progressive and mainline theological formation. Doubt is treated as a spiritual capacity — the room God leaves for mystery — rather than a defect to be suppressed. This contrasts sharply with charismatic and NAR framings that treat doubt as unbelief to be rebuked. ## The Thomas Template John 20:19-31 gives the tradition its emblematic story. Thomas names what he needs ("unless I see... and touch"), is not punished for it, and receives the risen Christ's self-disclosure. His response — "My Lord and my God" — is the most exalted confession in the New Testament. Honest doubt can lead to deeper confession than unquestioned belief. ## Progressive / Mainline Framing - **Doubt is healthy in measure.** Critical thinking is a gift. Too much doubt slides into cynicism; too little produces rigidity. - **Blind faith is fragile.** Faith without room for mystery cannot survive crisis. The 14-year-old confirmand's statement should not be the same at 41. - **Flexibility is strength.** "A faith that is flexible, that has room, that can grow" (Rev. Caroline Saxton, 2026-04-12). ## NAR / High-Control Contrast In NAR and adjacent charismatic contexts: - Doubt is often reframed as a demonic stronghold or "spirit of unbelief" to be rebuked. - Prophetic words and spiritual experiences are treated as self-authenticating; interrogating them is itself unspiritual. - Deconstruction is labeled rebellion, apostasy, or the fruit of woundedness rather than legitimate discernment. > [!contradiction] > **Progressive UCC:** Doubt is a faithful posture; it makes space for mystery. > > **NAR / high-control charismatic:** Doubt is a spiritual threat to be broken through prayer, deliverance, or submission to apostolic oversight. > > Both positions claim Scripture. The difference is hermeneutical: whether the Thomas narrative is read as descriptive of healthy faith formation or prescriptive of a temporary failure resolved by sight. ## DARVO / Coercion Flags to Watch In high-control environments, doubt is frequently met with DARVO-adjacent moves: - **Deny** the legitimacy of the question. - **Attack** the person's spiritual state or motives ("What's really going on in your heart?"). - **Reverse Victim and Offender** — the doubter is said to be harming the community rather than the community failing to engage the question. Progressive and deconstructing spaces deliberately refuse this pattern. ## Certainty as Hazard — the Damascus Road extension The 2026-04-19 sermon at St. John's UCC ("Converted, Called, and Commissioned" on Acts 9) added a complementary axis to the Thomas template. Where Thomas asks the church to honor doubt, **Saul on the Damascus road shows the church the danger of certainty**. Saul is *certain* he is doing the Lord's work as he drags Christians in chains. That certainty is precisely what the risen Christ interrupts. Saxton's exegetical pivot quoted Andrew E. Gardner: *"He recognizes that God is speaking and that something does not add up."* The collapse of Saul's certainty is the work of grace, not its obstacle. Read together, the two sermons frame a single progressive claim: - **Doubt is welcome at the table** (Thomas). - **Certainty is the thing that may need to be undone** (Saul). Both stand against the [[New Apostolic Reformation]] epistemic posture, where prophetic certainty is a Spirit-given deliverable and doubt is a stronghold to be broken. The progressive reading inverts the valences. The 2026-04-12 sermon's line — "the faith we have at 14 will not necessarily be the faith at 41, and I hope it's not" — captures this. ## Sources - [[2026-04-12 St Johns UCC]] - [[2026-04-19 St Johns UCC Pauls Conversion]] ## Related - [[Deconstruction]] — to be created when a dedicated source is ingested - [[Fallible Prophecy]] — sits on the same NAR epistemic axis: doubt of a "prophetic word" is reframed as spiritual failure in NAR contexts, where a progressive frame would treat that same doubt as healthy discernment. - [[Paula Gooder]]
