# Hermeneutical Genealogy **Summary.** The practice of tracing an interpretive framework — a doctrine, a vocabulary, a way of reading Scripture — back to its **historical and institutional sources**, so that what presents itself as *timeless biblical truth* becomes visible as a *dated, authored, located artifact*. A core methodology of this vault, applied three ways: as the non-scored **Hermeneutical Genealogy** section of the 13-category sermon rubric, as **Phase 4 Coda** of the Bible-study template, and as the central pedagogical instrument of the [[NAR Fallacy Taxonomy]] (§J) for ministry to charismatic-formed congregants. The wager: **re-historicizing the vocabulary disables the equivocation** in a way no single-fallacy correction can. ## The Method Four moves, in order: 1. **Isolate the term or frame.** Identify the load-bearing vocabulary presented as simply "what the Bible says": *covering, honor, spiritual father, the anointing, impartation, fivefold ministry, atmosphere, activation, punishment paradigm, open womb.* 2. **Date it.** Find the earliest published or institutional use in its current sense. Almost always the "timeless" term has a birthday: "covering" in its submission sense — Shepherding movement, early 1970s; governing "apostles/prophets" — Latter Rain (1948), systematized by [[C. Peter Wagner]] (1990s); "honor" as leader-deference — Danny Silk, *Culture of Honor* (2009); "punishment paradigm" — Silk, *Unpunishable* (2019); "atmosphere"/"encounter" engineering — Bob Sorge's worship manuals. 3. **Locate it.** Name the institution and the interests it served: who gained authority, money, or immunity when the term entered circulation? (The covering doctrine's function for the Fort Lauderdale Five; the honor redefinition's function for Bethel-orbit leadership.) 4. **Restate without it.** Ask what claim survives translation into plain public language. What remains is the arguable content; what evaporates was the frame doing coercive work. The result is not debunking-by-association (the genetic fallacy, [[NAR Fallacy Taxonomy]] §B.13 — a claim is not false *because* it is recent). The result is **de-naturalization**: the frame loses its status as the water the reader swims in and becomes one proposal among others, with an author who can be disagreed with. ## Why It Works Where Fallacy-Naming Fails Per the taxonomy's stacking model (§J): the fallacies operate *inside* a vocabulary that pre-frames experience. Name the DARVO and the honor-culture layer reframes the naming as dishonor; name the false dilemma and the loaded language makes the naming sound spiritually crude. The equivocation (§D.24) — "honor" meaning both the traditional virtue and the new deference-content — operates *below* the level any argument-layer intervention reaches. Genealogy goes to that layer. When a congregant can trace "honor" to Silk 2009, Silk to Bethel, Bethel to Wagner, Wagner to Latter Rain — the word can no longer smuggle the old virtue's authority into the new institutional content. **The genealogy disables the equivocation.** This is the documented St. John's UCC experience with ex-charismatic congregants, and the reason both the sermon rubric and the Bible-study template carry a genealogy section that is deliberately *non-scored*: it is formation work, not evaluation work. > [!contradiction] > **The method must be turned on itself.** Every tradition — including the UCC's — has a genealogy. "Timeless" mainline assumptions (lectionary structure, historical-critical method, inclusive-language conventions) are also dated, authored, located. A genealogy practice applied only to opponents' frames becomes a weapon; applied symmetrically it becomes epistemic hygiene, and it models for ex-charismatic congregants that *having* a history does not make a frame false — it makes it accountable. This symmetry is also the guard against [[Lateral Transfer Risk]]: a leaver who learns genealogy only as anti-NAR polemic has acquired a new insider tool, not a portable discipline. ## Worked Examples in This Vault - **"Honor"** — Silk's *Culture of Honor* (2009) redefinition; operationalized at [[World Harvest Outreach (Chambersburg)]] in the Durniak honor ceremony; taxonomy §D.24/§F.44. - **"Covering / spiritual authority"** — Latter Rain → Fort Lauderdale Five/Shepherding (1970s) → apostolic networks; the [[DOVE International]] and Sovereign Grace genealogies are the two mapped institutional descents. - **"Fivefold ministry" as governance** — Latter Rain restorationism → Wagner's *The New Apostolic Churches* (1998); see [[Five-Fold Ministry]], [[Apostolic Authority]]. - **The Passion Translation** — a genealogy of a *text*: [[The Passion Translation]]'s claimed Aramaic sourcing traced to Victor Alexander's self-published English, exposing provenance rather than exegesis as the decisive question. - **Worship "encounter" engineering** — Sorge's manuals → IHOP/Bethel set architecture; [[Worship as Manipulation in the NAR and a Framework for Liberation]]. ## Practice Formats - **Sermon rubric:** one paragraph per sermon tracing the origin of its governing interpretive move (non-scored). - **Bible study Phase 4 Coda:** for each interpretive tradition consulted, one line of provenance — who reads this way, since when, serving what. - **Adult education:** teach §J's stacking model *through* a single genealogy (honor is the best-documented) rather than through the fallacy catalog. ## Related - [[Lateral Transfer Risk]] — what this method treats - [[NAR Fallacy Taxonomy]] — §J names this the central pedagogical instrument - [[Latter Rain]] · [[C.
