# Spiritual Warfare Theology
A cluster of theological doctrines holding that demonic powers exercise real, organized governance over geographic territories, social structures, and human individuals — and that Christians are called to combat these powers through prayer, prophecy, fasting, and apostolically-coordinated spiritual offensive. The concept spans a spectrum from broad evangelical usage (see Ephesians 6) to the highly systematized **Strategic-Level Spiritual Warfare (SLSW)** developed within the New Apostolic Reformation.

## The Spectrum
### Broad Evangelical Spiritual Warfare
Most evangelical and Pentecostal traditions affirm some form of spiritual warfare grounded in:
- **Ephesians 6:10-18** — the "armor of God" passage; Paul names "principalities and powers, rulers of darkness of this world, spiritual wickedness in high places" (KJV)
- **Daniel 10** — the "Prince of Persia" narrative; an angelic battle lasting 21 days implies territorial demonic opposition
- **1 Peter 5:8** — "your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion"
- **Revelation** — cosmic war framing
At this level, spiritual warfare is prayer, resistance to temptation, and communal discernment. It does not require apostolic office.
> [!note] The rhetorical-formation layer (how ordinary congregants get formed)
> Below the systematized SLSW of the apostles sits a popular rhetoric that forms rank-and-file evangelicals. Jeremy Steele (*Unbelief*) traces its lexicon to Frank Peretti's novels *This Present Darkness* and *Piercing the Darkness* plus multi-week "armor of God" (Ephesians 6) church studies (Source: Evangelical Code Words — Jeremy Steele (Unbelief podcast)). The effect is political: "political disagreement becomes spiritual corruption… criticism becomes spiritual persecution." The verb "rebuke" then migrates from confronting demonic possession to dismissing whole categories — "ideas get rebuked, movies get rebuked, politicians get rebuked, history books get rebuked, therapists get rebuked." This is the congregational-rhetoric counterpart to the doctrinal SLSW below, and it feeds directly into Christian Nationalism.
### Strategic-Level Spiritual Warfare (SLSW) — NAR Development
C. Peter Wagner coined "strategic-level spiritual warfare" in the 1990s to describe a systematized form of spiritual combat focused on identifying and binding **territorial spirits** — named demonic powers assigned to specific cities, regions, nations, or institutions. Key claims:
1. Demonic "strongholds" must be identified through **spiritual mapping** (prayer-walking, prophetic reconnaissance, historical research into occult history of a location).
2. These strongholds block evangelism and must be broken by coordinated apostolic/prophetic intercession before mass-harvest revivals can occur.
3. The authority to conduct such warfare belongs primarily to recognized **apostles and prophets** operating within proper covering structures (see Apostolic Authority, Five-Fold Ministry).
4. Cities, nations, and cultures can be "taken" for the Kingdom by sustained SLSW — connecting directly to Dominionism and the Seven Mountains Mandate.
**Key practitioners:** Wagner, Mike Bickle (IHOPKC's 24/7 prayer model is explicitly SLSW-framed), Cindy Jacobs, Chuck Pierce, Dutch Sheets.

## Harm Assessment
> [!question]
> **Documented harm patterns in SLSW theology:**
> 1. **Scapegoating geography:** Attributing poverty, violence, or social dysfunction to demonic territorial control deflects structural, political, and economic accountability. Communities are given a spiritual explanation for material harm.
> 2. **Coercive prayer mobilization:** The claim that spiritual warfare requires coordinated apostolic leadership creates pressure to submit to NAR authority structures even in prayer — a private spiritual act is made publicly accountable to apostolic gatekeepers.
> 3. **Prophetic error normalization:** SLSW produces extensive prophecy about cities, nations, and elections. When these prophecies fail (cities not "transformed," elections go differently), the Fallible Prophecy doctrine absorbs the failure without accountability.
> 4. **Targeting of marginalized communities:** SLSW has historically identified LGBTQ+ communities, mosques, temples, and progressive institutions as demonic strongholds requiring intercessory "attack." This theology has been used to frame DEIB work as spiritually dangerous.

## Mainline and Progressive Contrast
The UCC tradition does not use SLSW framing. Mainline engagement with "principalities and powers" language (Ephesians 6) follows Walter Wink's interpretation:
- Powers are not personal demonic beings assigned to territories, but the **internal spirituality of institutions** — the way bureaucratic, corporate, and political structures accumulate power and resist humanizing reform.
- Spiritual warfare in Wink's reading means identifying and naming structural evil in human systems — not binding territorial spirits but confronting systems of oppression.
- This reading has affinities with liberation theology and is compatible with UCC social justice praxis.
> [!contradiction]
> **NAR SLSW vs. Walter Wink / liberation-theology reading of Ephesians 6.** NAR: principalities and powers are literal demonic beings governing territories; warfare requires apostolic coordination and prophetic reconnaissance; the church wins by binding spirits. Wink/mainline: the powers are the spiritual dimension of human systems; warfare is prophetic naming of structural evil and institutional accountability. The NAR reading externalizes evil (it's "out there" in spirits); Wink's reading internalizes it (the powers are embedded in human structures, including the church). ## IHOPKC Connection
IHOPKC's 24/7 prayer model is explicitly SLSW-framed. Harp and Bowl intercession is described as continuous "watches" that maintain spiritual pressure over Kansas City, the United States, and eventually the entire globe. Bickle taught that IHOPKC's intercessory function was apostolically essential — without it, revival would not come. This framing gave the prayer house a sense of world-historical spiritual necessity that contributed to high-control group dynamics (see DARVO).
