# Camera Wiki
Lab notebook for photo + video work with the Canon T7i. Settings, recipes, post workflow.
## Body
**Canon T7i (EOS Rebel T7i / 800D)**
- 24.2MP APS-C CMOS, DIGIC 7
- Dual Pixel AF in live view + video
- 1080p60 max (no 4K)
- Crop factor: 1.6×
## Lenses
_(One note per lens: focal length, max aperture, IS, weight, sharpness wide-open, best use.)_
- [[Lens - 18-55mm kit]]
- [[Lens - 50mm f/1.8 STM]]
- [[Lens - Nifty telephoto]]
## Base settings
### Stills
- RAW (.CR2) for anything that matters
- Picture Style: Neutral (editing later)
- AF: One Shot for static, AI Servo for motion
- Metering: Evaluative default; spot for high-contrast
### Video
- 1080p24 for cinematic, 1080p60 for motion/slowmo
- Manual exposure; shutter ≈ 2× fps
- ISO: keep ≤1600 if possible on APS-C
- Picture Style: Neutral, sharpness -2, contrast -2
- External mic when possible (on-camera mic is mediocre)
## Recipes
- [[Recipe - Natural light portrait]]
- [[Recipe - Garden macro]]
- [[Recipe - Worship service video]]
- [[Recipe - Product shot for docs/blog]]
## Post workflow
- Ingest → Lightroom / Darktable / Capture One
- Backup: 3-2-1 — card → local drive → cloud/offsite
- Video: Resolve (free) for grading + cut
## Recurring gotchas
- T7i overheats on long video clips (~29:59 cap per clip anyway)
- Rolling shutter on fast pans — slow the movement
- Dual Pixel AF is good but not Sony-class — leave margin
- Battery life shorter in video mode; carry spares
## Experiments
- [ ] ETTR vs midtone-protect in high-DR scenes
- [ ] Focus-pulling workflow with Dual Pixel
- [ ] External recorder via HDMI — is it worth it on T7i?
## Open questions
- Upgrade path: mirrorless APS-C (R10) vs full-frame used?
- Prime-first kit vs zoom-first — which matches how I actually shoot?
- Is 4K worth the body swap for _my_ use cases?
