## CONFESSION & ASSURANCE
### Call to Confession
*from Feasting on the Word Worship Companion*
Just as the prophet Isaiah assured God's people so many years ago, he assures us now that God is our salvation. It is because of that confidence, because of that promise, that we dare to approve God with our confession.
### Prayer of Confession
*from Feasting on the Word Worship Companion*
God of peace we confess we are a people of fear. We have let anxiety rule our days and worry our nights. We have been distracted by nerves and focused on tension. We confess we have ignored your command to not be afraid. Forgive us, O God. Calm our hearts, settle our stomachs, and renew in us the ability to find our comfort in you. Amen.
### Kyrie
*Hymnal Companion C-4*
### Assurance of Grace
*from Feasting on the Word Worship Companion*
The prophet Isaiah assures us: God is building a new heaven and a new earth; the former things will not be remembered or come to mind. Forgiven and freed, rejoice in what the Lord is creating in you, in me, in all creation.

## PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD
### Glory Be to the Father #704
### Scripture Reading
**Luke 21:5-19**
> [!bible]+ [Luke 21:5-19 - AMP](https://bolls.life/AMP/42/21/)
> 5. As some were talking about the temple, that it was decorated with beautiful stones and consecrated offerings [of magnificent gifts of gold which were displayed on the walls and hung in the porticoes], He said,
> 6. "As for all these things which you see, the time will come when there will not be one stone left on another that will not be torn down."
> 7. They asked Him, "Teacher, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign when these things are about to happen?"
> 8. He said, "Be careful and see to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name [appropriating for themselves the name Messiah which belongs to Me alone], saying, 'I am He,' and, 'The time is near!' Do not follow them.
> 9. When you hear of wars and disturbances [civil unrest, revolts, uprisings], do not panic; for these things must take place first, but the end will not come immediately."
> 10. Then Jesus told them, "Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom.
> 11. There will be violent earthquakes, and in various places famines and [deadly and devastating] pestilences (plagues, epidemics); and there will be terrible sights and great signs from heaven.
> 12. "But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, turning you over to the synagogues and prisons, and bringing you before kings and governors for My name's sake.
> 13. This will be a time and an opportunity for you to testify [about Me].
> 14. So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves;
> 15. for I will give you [skillful] words and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute.
> 16. But you will be betrayed and handed over even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death,
> 17. and you will be continually hated by everyone because of [your association with] My name.
> 18. But not a hair of your head will perish.
> 19. By your [patient] endurance [empowered by the Holy Spirit] you will gain your souls.

With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.
**And on that Day you will say: "Give thanks to YHWH, invoke God's holy Name! Make known among all the people what YHWH has done. Proclaim that God's Name is exalted.**
**Sing praises to YHWH, for God has triumphed. Let this be known throughout the world!**
Cry out, shout aloud, you who dwell in Zion, for the Holy One of Israel dwells among us in majesty!"

### Hymn #72
**"Day by Day"**
*Music: Oscar Ahnfelt, 1872*
*Words: Caroline V. Sandell-Berg, 1866; translated by A. L. Skoog, 1921*
Day by day and with each passing moment, strength I find to meet my trials here; Trusting in my Father's wise bestowment, I've no cause for worry or for fear. He whose heart is kind beyond all measure gives unto each day what He deems best— Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure, mingling toil with peace and rest.
Every day the Lord Himself is near me with a special mercy for each hour; All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me with the promise of His love and power. The protection of His child and treasure is a charge that on Himself He's gladly borne; Therefore I can rest in God and measure all the knowledge that I have of Him is true.
Help me then in every tribulation so to trust Your promises, O Lord, That I lose not faith's sweet consolation offered me within Your holy Word. Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meet me, e'er to take, as from a father's hand, One by one, the days, with mercy greet me as, out-going, goes at His command.

## Notes for Courtney's Ministry Context
This service marks the **Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost** in Year 4 (John) of the Narrative Lectionary, with primary focus on **Isaiah 9:1-7** ("Isaiah: A Child Is Born") aligned with the Advent season's approach. The responsive reading from **Isaiah 12** (using The Inclusive Bible's gender-inclusive language for YHWH) emphasizes liberation theology's themes of comfort, strength, and deliverance from oppression.
The sermon by Rev. Peter Emig (guest pastor) paired with Rev. Caroline Saxton's pastoral leadership reflects St. John's commitment to progressive, inclusive biblical scholarship. The hymn selections—particularly the Wesleyan emphasis in "O for a Thousand Tongues" (Wesley, 1739) and the contemplative "Day by Day" (Swedish liturgical tradition)—support integration of both prophetic justice and mystical/contemplative dimensions appropriate for a UCC congregation.
