### Connection to Today's Message
The Fourth Sunday after Epiphany in the Narrative Lectionary Year 4 (John) brings us to one of the most powerful encounters in the Gospel of John—Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well. The theme of "living water" resonates deeply with the approaching Tu BiShvat, which celebrates God's life-giving provision through creation and the renewal of nature. Just as trees draw water from deep wells to produce fruit, Jesus offers water that becomes "a spring of water gushing up to eternal life" (John 4:14). The Epiphany season's focus on revelation finds perfect expression here: Jesus reveals himself to an outsider, a Samaritan woman, crossing boundaries of gender, ethnicity, and religion to offer salvation to all people. The liturgical color green reinforces themes of growth, life, and the living water that sustains spiritual flourishing.

#### Hymn #457
_"Come and Feast, for All Are Welcomed"_
**WORDS**: Larry E. Schultz, 2004 **MUSIC**: Henry T. Smart, 1867 **Tune**: REGENT SQUARE (8.7.8.7.8.7) Words © 2010 Celebrating Grace, Inc.
**Verse 1** Come and feast, for all are welcomed at God's table, spread with love. Common meal, broken bread; Come proclaim God's grace and goodness, and hear the words in every banquet hall. Come, and feast, for all are welcomed at God's table, spread with love, common meal.
**Verse 2** Here we nurture and encourage as we share this fragrant meal. "Go and serve," Jesus said; Come and taste the gifts from love and peace, deep field and vineyard; Here we nurture and encourage as we share this wine and bread.
**Verse 3** See the challenge lifted up, ward; smell the fragrant, "Go and serve this banquet hall." Hear to every Jesus said: sustain. Come and in remembrance touch your souls, with grace, feed the See the challenge lifted up, as we touch glad feeding.
**Verse 4** With the Spirit it blessed communion, "Go in peace, and serve as nourished people, gladly feed one and all!" With the Spirit blessed communion, wine and bread.
#### Responsive Prayer of Confession
_written by Rev. Gord_
**Leader**: God of Living Water, you call us to come and drink. **People**: **So why do we sit here and complain that there is not enough water?** **Leader**: You call us to strike the rocks of our world and let your Living Water flow. **People**: **But we do not trust enough that the spring is there.** **Leader**: **We want to find the water on our own, using our own wisdom.** **People**: You call us to share the Water of Life with the world around us. **Leader**: **But we believe that the water is limited, not abundant and so we are tempted to save it for ourselves.**
**Leader**: For all the times we turn away from your Water, for all the times we sully the Water by misusing it, for all the times we let others go thirsty instead of offering a drink, **All**: **Forgive us, we pray.**
_(time of silent prayer)_
#### Assurance of Grace
_written by Rev. Gord_
The Water of Life flows with abundance to fill us with hope, to cleanse us of our guilt, to float us to a new life. Washed in the Living Water, we are forgiven and set free to live abundant life. **Thanks and praise to God. Amen.**

#### Responsive Reading
_"Thirsting" (a remix of Psalm 66) by Julia Seymour_
**Leader**: Does the deer let itself get as thirsty as I get for God? **People**: **Does a grazing wild animal, alert for predators, forget to drink? Does this sister in nature become so parched that she cannot think, cannot work, cannot be?**
**Leader**: The parching of my soul comes from my own failure to drink from the fountain of all blessings. **People**: **I wander down my own path with just a few things to finish before...and then something else comes up...and after dinner, I will...tend to other things crowding my mind.**
**Leader**: As I brush my teeth, I stare at my reflection with regret of what is undone. **People**: **My cervine sister lays down in pine boughs, quenched. My soul rests on memory foam, desperate for a drink of the water of life.**

How does today's liturgical season/observance deepen my understanding of the message?
_The Epiphany season's emphasis on Jesus being revealed to all people connects powerfully to this story of Jesus revealing himself to a Samaritan woman—an outsider. The approaching Tu BiShvat and its celebration of trees drawing water from deep wells mirrors the living water Jesus offers._

### Hymn #577
_"I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say"_
**WORDS**: Horatius Bonar, 1846 **MUSIC**: Traditional English melody; arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1906 **Tune**: KINGSFOLD (CMD)
**Verse 1** I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Come unto Me and rest; Lay down, O weary one, lay down your head upon My breast." I came to Jesus as I was, weary, and worn, and sad; I found in Him a resting-place, and He has made me glad.
**Verse 2** I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Behold, I freely give the living water; thirsty one, stoop down and drink, and live." I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in Him.
**Verse 3** I heard the voice of Jesus say, "I am this dark world's Light; look unto Me, your morn shall rise, and all your day be bright." I looked to Jesus, and I found in Him my Star, my Sun; and in that Light of life I'll walk till trav'ling days are done.
