## From Pastor Caroline (p. 2)
- October is "my favorite season: fall." Every Sunday has something special:
- **Oct 4** — World Communion Sunday
- **Oct 11** — Franklin County Pride Festival at Wilson College; St. John's sponsors a table
- **Oct 18** — Immunization Clinic (Chambers' Apothecary) and CROP Walk
- **Oct 25** — Book Sale final day ($5/bag, buy 3 get the 4th free)
- **Oct 31 (Sat)** — "No Tricks, Just Treats"; candy donations needed
- Invites anyone with a mission-aligned idea to contact her or a Council member "to make it happen."
- She is **co-teaching confirmation this fall with Roxanne Davenport**; several young people have begun a year of study and mentorship.
- **Council retreat** coming to develop the strategic plan for 2027 and beyond.
- **Fall Congregational Meeting, Sun Nov 15** — approve the 2027 budget.
- Finance update from Treasurer Scot Orndorff (p. 8), especially re: HVAC and parking lot.
- **Habitat for Humanity:** exploratory conversations continue about developing church property. "No decisions have been made." More congregational conversations will follow when data is more definitive.
- Self-care word for "this election season": she is limiting social media, TV, and podcasts "because I want my heart to be open, my mind flexible, and my spirit brave." Eat well, hydrate, spend time with loved ones, sleep. "Exhaustion won't serve any of us well."
- Office sign: "Life is fragile. Handle with prayer."
- Closing: "May God grant us wisdom and courage for the living of these days. We are in this together." (echoes Harry Emerson Fosdick's hymn "God of Grace and God of Glory")
---
## Church Music (p. 3)
Unsigned article; closing line credits the content to *Church Music* by Archibald T. Davison, Harvard University Press.
- Church music differs from secular music: its purpose is not entertainment but "communication between man and God, which is really worship."
- Worship through music must be two-way, never one-way.
- Congregational hymn singing is the main way everyone participates; claims it "has been proved" people remember words better after singing them.
- Challenges "I can't sing" as an excuse.
- During the anthem, people should meditate, not critique the choir ("Mary's hair," a sleepy bass, slow altos).
- In church music, the words matter more than the music; the text and music "must fit together" (a Bible text set to a Beatles song is the counter-example).
- Many scholars feel the ideal choir placement is the rear balcony so the congregation listens without distraction; "this is also why choirs do not face the congregation in most churches."
- St. John's choir is "meant to be on the balcony," but "we have too many choir members who have trouble doing the steps to get to the balcony. This becomes a problem!"

## 🔎 Critical Analysis
> Author check: only the Pastor's letter (Pastor Caroline), the finance report (Scot Orndorff), the Nursery School note (Kari Rock), and the thank-you notes are signed. **The Church Music article is unsigned.** Its sole credit is to Davison's book, so no individual author is attributed here.
### 📖 Cover — Isaiah 58:9
- **Contextomy (quoting out of context), mild:** The cover lifts the promise of 58:9a without its condition. Isaiah 58:6–9 ties God's "Here I am" to a fast that looses "the bonds of injustice" and shares bread with the hungry. Verse 9b continues: "If you remove the yoke from among you…"
- Impact: read alone, the verse sounds like an unconditional comfort promise. In context, it is prophetic critique of worship without justice.
- Irony worth naming: the issue itself embodies 58:6–7 (Little Free Pantry, CROP Walk, Franklin Together, Homeless Matters). Printing 58:6–9 together would make that link explicit.
- **Translation check (needs further research):** the cover wording ("he will say, 'Here I am'") matches NRSV-family phrasing. Worth comparing with the CEB Pastor Caroline uses for Bible study, since the congregation may hear a different rendering on Sunday nights.
- **Accessibility:** scripture set as script-font text inside an image is an image of text. See [[Newsletter Accessibility Plan 2026-08-22]].
### ✉️ From Pastor Caroline
- **Tone:** warm, pastoral, invitational, second person ("If there is something YOU would love to do…"). Closes with a pastoral-care word on media intake and rest.
- **Reasoning strengths:** concrete dates; points readers to primary data (finance report, p. 8); models nonpartisan election-season counsel without naming candidates or positions.
- **Framing gap, Habitat for Humanity (needs further research):** the letter says conversations are "exploratory" and "no decisions have been made." Page 7 adds that **Guilford Township's supervisors reviewed "updated plans"** and **Council members consulted an attorney.**
- Not a contradiction: plans and legal advice can precede a decision.
- Yet it is a **selective emphasis** issue (a framing bias, not a formal fallacy). Readers of the letter alone would underestimate how far the process has moved.
- Questions for Nov 15: What do the "updated plans" contain? Which portion of land? Is a congregational vote required under the constitution/bylaws, and when?
- **Mild appeal to emotion (legitimate use):** "Life is fragile. Handle with prayer." It supports, rather than replaces, the practical counsel.
### 🎵 Church Music (unsigned)
- **Source problem (needs further research):** the article credits "Church Music" by Archibald T. Davison, Harvard University Press. Davison's Harvard titles are *Protestant Church Music in America* (1933) and *Church Music: Illusion and Reality* (1952). Yet the text mentions **Beatles songs**, which postdate both books. So the piece is an adaptation or paraphrase, not a quotation. The newsletter does not say which parts are Davison's and which are the writer's.
- Visible yellow highlighting in the layout suggests pasted, partly marked-up source text.
- **Fallacies identified:**
1. **False dilemma (worship vs. entertainment):** "Church music serves not as entertainment but as a means of communication between man and God." Music can do both; delight is not the opposite of worship (cf. Psalm 150). Improvement: "Church music may delight us, but its first aim is worship."
2. **Appeal to unnamed authority:** "it has been proved that people can remember words better after they have sung them" and "Many people who have studied church music thoroughly feel…" No source is given.
- The memory claim has partial support: Wallace (1994, *Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition*) found melody can aid text recall under certain conditions; Ludke, Ferreira & Overy (2014, *Memory & Cognition*) found singing aided learning of foreign-language phrases. "Proved" overstates both.
3. **Loaded / rhetorical question:** "Do you really think this is a good excuse?" It presumes the answer and shames non-singers rather than addressing why people don't sing (hearing loss, unfamiliar hymns, vocal range, grief, disability).
4. **Strawman and gendered caricature:** congregants "looking at Mary's hair" or judging a sleepy bass. It reduces attentive listeners to petty critics.
5. **Hasty generalization:** "Too many people spend this time…" and "choirs do not face the congregation in most churches." No evidence; many Protestant churches seat a chancel choir facing the congregation.
6. **Non sequitur:** choir invisibility → better meditation → therefore the balcony is ideal. It skips the counter-case that seeing singers helps lip-reading, hearing, and participation.
7. **Appeal to tradition:** the balcony is where the choir is "meant to be" at St. John's, without saying why that should govern present practice.
- **Biases:**
- **Ableist framing:** the article calls choir members who "have trouble doing the steps" "a problem!" The problem is the inaccessible balcony, not the people. This clashes directly with **Access Sunday (Oct 18)** and the **new acoustic panels** in the same issue. Suggested reframe: "Our balcony isn't accessible to all our singers, so the choir sings where everyone can take part."
- **Aesthetic/class bias:** "concert" and "Beatles" framing privileges classical and hymnic idioms. It sits uneasily beside the praise group's blended-service role (p. 6).
- **Exclusive language:** "communication between man and God," in an Open and Affirming UCC newsletter.
- **Tone:** didactic and scolding, with rhetorical questions and an exclamation-point ending. It reads older than its neighbors, in line with a mid-century source.
- **Boundary note:** this analysis concerns the article's reasoning, not the music ministry's leadership decisions.
### 💵 Major Project Financial Status Report
- **Math verified:**
- HVAC: $575,012 + $39,463 = $614,475; − $591,172 = **$23,303** ✅
- Parking: $227,771 + $10,000 + $1,565 + $54,205 = **$293,541** ✅
- Reimbursement need: $227,771 + $54,205 = **$281,976** ✅; $47,000 × 6 = $282,000 ✅
- **Reasoning strength:** paying off a 3.75% loan before it reset to 7.25% variable is sound cost-avoidance logic. Publishing a correction notice for the omitted bequest is good transparency.
- **Framing effects:**
- **"GOOD NEWS!" headline** leads before the combined outstanding need of **$305,279** ($23,303 + $281,976).
- **Euphemism / minimization:** "no official fundraising campaign," while asking $47,000/yr for six years. Functionally, that is a campaign.
- **Discrepancy with July/August issue (needs further research):** the July/August issue said the parking lot cost "close to $250,000, funded by drawing from the Trust Fund." It now totals **$293,541**, with **$54,205 from operating cash**. That is ~$43,500 higher, and a second funding source appeared. Was the difference change orders, line painting, or an early estimate?
- **Open questions for Nov 15:** Does the Trust Fund loan carry interest or a repayment schedule? Does the early HVAC payoff affect 2027 operating reserves? Is the Trust Fund restricted or unrestricted?
### 🗂️ Future Together & Events
- **Stale copy:** "Fall church school classes will resume… Sunday, September 13" in an October issue.
- **Missing word:** "We have selected another this fall to gather…" (probably "another date").
- **Naming inconsistency:** "The Wired Word" (p. 6) vs. "Wired Room Sunday school class" (p. 17).
- **Positive:** Access Sunday, acoustic panels, livestream expansion, and the membership-not-required youth policy all advance stated welcome values.
### 🧒 Youth pages
- **Event name mismatch:** "No Tricks, Just Treats" (pp. 2, 5, 7), "Treats no Tricks" (p. 24 calendar), and **"Tricks No Treats"** (p. 25 heading). The p. 25 heading says the opposite of the event.
- **Duplicated sentence** on p. 24 ("Should help as a boredom buster until the Children's message…" appears twice).
### 📅 Date & detail errors
- **Dance flyer:** "October 9" is a Friday; the series runs Thursdays, so it is likely **Oct 8**. Confirm with Harold Collier.
- **Volume numbering:** this issue is **Vol 95 No 9**; the July/August 2026 issue was recorded as **Vol 93 No 7**. One of them is wrong; check the July PDF.
- **Typos:** "APPOINTENT" (p. 15); "Chambers' Apothecary" vs. "Chambers Apothecary"; "Mens Breakfast" (missing apostrophe); "at leaving from Falling Spring" (p. 5).
### ♿ Accessibility (ties to [[Newsletter Accessibility Plan 2026-08-22]])
- Nearly every flyer (pp. 12–16, 20–22) is an **image of text**. Key details (dates, phone numbers, QR codes) are unavailable to screen readers unless the PDF is tagged.
- QR codes appear without a printed URL alternative on the flu and giving pages.
- Decorative clip art (pumpkins, cupcake) needs empty alt text; content-bearing images need descriptions.
