# Pentecostalism
## What the term covers
**Pentecostalism** is the family of Christian movements that treat the events of Acts 2 as
normative rather than historical — the gifts of the Spirit, especially tongues, prophecy, and
healing, are expected to operate now. Conventionally dated to the **Azusa Street revival**
(Los Angeles, 1906) under **William J. Seymour**, a Black preacher whose interracial meetings
were remarkable in the Jim Crow era and are frequently sanitized out of later tellings.
Three waves are usually distinguished:
1. **Classical Pentecostalism** (1900s–) — new denominations: Assemblies of God, Church of God
in Christ, Foursquare.
2. **Charismatic renewal** (1960s–) — the same gifts adopted *within* existing Catholic,
Anglican, and mainline bodies rather than by separating.
3. **Third wave / neo-charismatic** (1980s–) — Vineyard, and eventually the networks that
become the **New Apostolic Reformation**.
That third transition is where this vault's material concentrates.
## Why this vault holds it
Almost every high-demand religious system documented here is downstream of Pentecostalism, and
the vault has been analysing the branches without a page for the trunk. The
[[NAR and Charismatic Authority Critique MOC]] material,
[[3. Resources/Literature Notes/Sam Soleyn's Elementary Doctrines - A Complete Analysis]],
[[3. Resources/Literature Notes/Trim Healthy Mama Cult]], and the Mannatech material all assume
a charismatic substrate.
The historically interesting point, documented in
[[3. Resources/Literature Notes/From the same prayer meeting to opposite poles of American Christianity]],
is that **shared origin does not predict destination**. Sovereign Grace Ministries and the NAR
emerge from overlapping charismatic networks and end up at theologically opposite poles — while
arriving at *parallel accountability failures*. That convergence is the finding, and it is
stronger evidence than either lineage alone: if two movements with opposite theology produce the
same failure, the failure is structural rather than doctrinal.
Which is exactly the claim
[[3. Resources/Permanent Notes/Concentrated Authority Without Accountability Produces the Same Failure Patterns Across Religious and Software Ecosystems]]
makes at wider scope.
## The features that carry the risk
None of these is a defect in itself. Each becomes one when combined with unaccountable authority.
- **Direct revelation as an authority source.** If God speaks now, a leader's impression can
outrank scripture, elders, or evidence. This is the root of what
[[3. Resources/Permanent Notes/Prophetic Authority Without Accountability Becomes Unfalsifiable]]
describes, and it is why
[[3. Resources/Permanent Notes/Failed Prophecies Are Reframed Never Retracted]] is possible.
- **Restorationism.** The claim to be recovering the true apostolic church devalues intervening
tradition — and with it, the accumulated safeguards. Apostolic office in the NAR is a
restorationist claim before it is an organizational one.
- **Experience as verification.** Physical manifestation as evidence of divine action is the
mechanism behind
[[3. Resources/Permanent Notes/Religious Conditioning Produces Physiological Responses That Override Critical Thinking]].
It also makes non-manifestation a personal indictment — the man shamed for not falling when
slain in the spirit.
- **Personal charisma over office.** Authority attaches to the anointed individual rather than
to a role that can be audited or vacated.
## What the deficit framing misses
Pentecostalism is the fastest-growing form of Christianity globally, overwhelmingly in the
Global South, and the vault's sources are almost entirely North American and almost entirely
critical. That is a real sampling limitation and it should be stated rather than assumed away.
Azusa Street was interracial in 1906. Pentecostal churches have been points of entry and
leadership for people excluded from mainline institutions on grounds of race, class, gender, and
education — women preached in Pentecostal contexts generations before many mainline bodies
ordained them. A page that treats the tradition only as a pathology generator would be
describing the vault's reading list, not the movement.
## Distinguishing it from adjacent things
- **Pentecostal vs. charismatic.** Denominational identity vs. practice adopted within another
tradition. A charismatic Catholic is not a Pentecostal.
- **Pentecostal vs. evangelical.** Overlapping, not nested. Many evangelicals are cessationist —
holding the gifts ceased with the apostolic age — which is the direct negation of the
Pentecostal claim.
- **Pentecostal vs. NAR.** The NAR is a specific late development with distinctive
apostolic-office and dominionist commitments. Most Pentecostals are not in it, and treating the
terms as interchangeable is both inaccurate and needlessly insulting to a very large group of
people.
- **Pentecostal vs. prosperity gospel.** Frequently co-occurring, logically separable. Plenty of
Pentecostal traditions reject prosperity teaching explicitly.
## Open questions
- Is the accountability failure intrinsic to direct-revelation authority, or does it require the
additional ingredient of concentrated institutional power? The SGM/NAR convergence suggests the
second, since SGM is theologically cessationist-leaning Reformed.
- What do Global South Pentecostal movements look like on the same measures, given the vault has
no sources on them?
- Which safeguards do healthy charismatic traditions actually use? The vault documents failure
modes extensively and functional practice not at all.
