# A Contact Claim Needs a Named Transfer Not Just Proximity
## Claim
A "connection" claim between two people or movements built only on documented proximity — a visit, a shared building, a shared associate — stays incomplete until it names what actually transferred: a practice, a doctrine, or funding, because proximity is necessary evidence but not sufficient on its own.

## Scope & conditions
- Applies to genealogy-of-ideas arguments generally, not just religious movement history: tracing influence through documented contact is a real method, but contact alone slides into guilt by association without a named transfer.
- A "no connection" claim shouldn't be accepted by default either — the corrective runs both directions, but this note is about the connection side, where documentation of a visit is often mistaken for documentation of a doctrine.
- Distinct from a related but separate caution: a concentration event (several independent lines converging in one place) is a movement's seed, not its cause, and calls for its own evidence about why the movement took the shape it did.
- Weakest where the source making the claim is also the only narrator of it — a single retrospective account of contact, however specific about dates and newspapers, isn't yet cross-checked against a second party who was present.
## Evidence

> the Shepherding Movement, which was sort of a hierarchical destructive cult that prototyped the New Apostolic Reformation. [...] I talked about them one time, and I talked about in the same podcast talked about youth with a mission and people send me the mail you can't talk about shepherding and youth with a mission these are so far disconnected but yet I have newspaper articles where Earn Baxter is going to bases of YWAM in other countries right what's happening there it's cross-pollination
Bob Scott backs the disputed Baxter–YWAM link with newspaper evidence of documented visits rather than memory alone, which is stronger than an unsupported assertion. But documented visits establish contact, not doctrinal transfer — the newspaper articles show Baxter went to YWAM bases; they don't by themselves show what, if anything, moved between the two organizations as a result.

## Tests / falsifiers
- Source Scott's own book chapter on the Baxter/YWAM newspaper articles directly, to check whether "cross-pollination" is supported by anything beyond the fact of the visit — a named doctrine or practice that moved would strengthen the claim considerably.
- Find a second, independent account of the "three nuclear reactors" convergence (Bob Jones, John Paul Jackson, Paul Cain arriving at Scott's church within a few years of March 1983) to check whether the seed-event narrative holds up outside Scott's own retrospective telling.
