# Access Asymmetry Gates One Channel While Leaving Another Open
## Claim
When one channel to a group of people is controlled by an intermediary and another channel reaches them directly, the gated channel can only ever reach whoever the intermediary permits — a limitation the direct channel doesn't share.
<!-- atomicity: 1 idea ✓ -->
## Scope & conditions
- Applies wherever a relationship structurally routes through a gatekeeping party — a champion inside a buying committee, an editor between a writer and an audience, a manager between a report and leadership.
- The direct channel's reach advantage is structural, not a matter of better effort or skill by the people using it — it exists because of who controls access, not who tries harder.
- Does not claim the direct channel is more trusted or persuasive once it does reach someone, only that it reaches people the gated channel structurally cannot.
- Weakens if the "direct" channel is itself filtered by an algorithm, moderation layer, or other gate — the claim is about relative gating, not about any channel being gate-free in an absolute sense.
## Evidence
In B2B sales, a salesperson can typically only meet the people a deal's internal champion chooses to introduce them to — sales access is gated by the champion. Marketing, delivered through ads or content, can reach the economic buyer or final decision-maker directly, with no champion in between. In one practitioner's account, roughly 5% of the organizations he'd run deep-dive conversations with were running any marketing into open pipeline at all — meaning in the overwhelming majority of cases, the entire buying committee beyond the champion was reachable only through a channel nobody was using.

## Tests / falsifiers
- Would removing the champion as an intermediary (e.g. the buyer reaches out to sales unprompted) eliminate the reach gap, or does some other gate reassert itself? If a new gate reliably appears, the mechanism is about gating generally, not this specific intermediary.
- Track reply or engagement rates from a direct channel targeting people a gated channel has never reached — if the direct channel's reach doesn't correlate with actual engagement, access alone isn't sufficient and the claim needs a persuasion component added.
