# An Unreachable Standard Converts Devotion Into Extractable Labor
## Claim
A standard with no defined point of arrival makes effort unbounded, so a system that also misattributes who benefits can extract labor indefinitely without ever issuing a demand.

> And I wasn't working for God. That's the whole irony of all of this. I was working for them. The leaders. The more that I did, the more work they gave me because essentially I was doing their work.
Three components, and all three are required.
**No arrival.** Silverberg describes a version of works-righteousness inverted into *fail to do these works and you go to hell*, which retains the structure while appearing to reject it. Collins describes the same shape from a different group: always something more, something better, something longer, and no moment of having arrived.
**Misattributed beneficiary.** The labor was described as service to God and received by leadership. The same substitution ran on money — "they convinced me I was giving it to God" — and on time. Services ran four to five hours because "you have to stay until the Holy Spirit is done," and beyond them came paid classes. Missing them drew reprimand, and Silverberg worked out why: no registration fee, and no body visible on the stream. "I was just being used as a marketing tool."
**Emotional register.** The atmosphere was deliberate: "they don't want you to think rationally, they don't want you to think biblically, they want you to think emotionally."
No coercion appears anywhere in this. The person volunteers, escalates, and exhausts herself, because the standard is unreachable and the beneficiary is hidden. Her line — the more she did, the more she was given — is the mechanism stated exactly.
## Scope & conditions
- **Holds** where all three hold together: no defined completion, a beneficiary other than the stated one, and a motivation the system can address directly.
- **Breaks** where completion is defined and observable. A bounded ask can be finished, and finishing is what ends the escalation.
- **Breaks** where the beneficiary is stated honestly. Silverberg's own position is precise on this — giving is not the problem; being told you are giving to God when you are giving to a person is.
- **Weakens** where the participant has an outside reference class. Isolation from comparison is what keeps the standard credible.
- **Does not require** bad faith at every level. The structure produces the outcome whether or not anyone intends it, which is why it appears in volunteer organizations and mission-driven workplaces with sincere leadership.

Resources/Permanent Notes/The Merit Trap - Self-Worth in Systems of Singular Authority]] — because extends, and this is the nearest neighbour: that note describes merit defined, earned, and validated by the leader. This adds the economic consequence — a circular standard is by construction unreachable, and unreachable standards yield unlimited labor.
- [[3. Resources/Permanent Notes/Unfalsifiable Promises Transfer Their Failure to the Believer]] — because extends: the same source's attainment teaching (heavenly experience proportional to time spent) made every shortfall a personal deficiency, which is what keeps the effort escalating.

This is the voluntary case, which extracts more precisely because nothing is mandated and the participant experiences it as devotion.

## Implications
- The diagnostic is two questions, and neither is about anyone's motives: **what would completion look like, and who receives the benefit?** A system that cannot answer the first and misstates the second will extract regardless of intent.
- It transfers directly to volunteer organizing, open-source contribution, and mission-driven employment — settings where "for the mission" plays the role "for God" plays here, and where the escalating-ask-with-no-endpoint is common and rarely named.
- The practical countermeasure is defining done. Bounded asks with visible completion are what convert devotion into sustainable contribution rather than into an unbounded draw.
- Naming the actual beneficiary costs nothing and removes the mechanism. Silverberg's ask is exactly this: just admit I am giving it to you.
- Reward-with-more-work is the tell to watch for. Where the return on effort is a larger ask, the standard has no top.
## Open Questions
- Are the three components jointly necessary, or does an unreachable standard extract even when the beneficiary is stated honestly?
- Does explicitly defining completion reduce total contribution, or only redistribute it more sustainably?
- How much of the effect depends on isolation from an outside reference class, which is the one component secular organizations rarely achieve?
