# Prophetic Authority Without Accountability Becomes Unfalsifiable
When a prophetic claim can always be reinterpreted after the fact, you aren't dealing with prophecy anymore. You're dealing with a system that has made itself immune to correction. The Shawn Bolz scandal at Bethel Church exposes this with unusual clarity: Bolz built a platform and a multimillion-dollar business on "prophetic words" that were later shown to be fabricated or researched in advance. But by the time anyone challenged the claims, the authority structure had already absorbed and monetized them. People in the room were primed to believe. As one former insider put it, "you want to believe that God is like seeing you and talking to you. And so somebody says your address, you don't think 'Is that really God?' You're like, 'Oh, that's the coolest thing ever.'"
This isn't just about one person being dishonest. It's about a system where prophetic words aren't subject to evaluation. Geivett and Pivec document that John Wimber's review of the Kansas City prophets found them guilty of "failure to provide adequate accountability for their prophecies" and faulted the church for "allowing some of these prophets to establish doctrine based on their prophetic words." That was decades ago. The pattern hasn't changed -- it's scaled.
The structural problem is that NAR theology places prophets in a governing office with authority over the congregation, while simultaneously insisting that their prophecies don't need to meet Old Testament standards of accuracy. Wayne Grudem's argument -- that New Testament prophets "need not be one hundred percent accurate since they do not have the same level of authority as the Old Testament prophets" -- sounds like a reasonable theological distinction, but in practice it becomes the escape hatch. If a prophet doesn't need to be right, then being wrong carries no consequence, and you've built a system where the authority is unfalsifiable by design.

## Why This Matters
If you're inside one of these communities, the inability to question prophetic claims isn't a minor theological detail. It means you have no mechanism for identifying when you're being manipulated. The person delivering the word has institutional protection, financial incentive, and theological cover. You have the option to believe or to be told you're operating under a "spirit of religion." Recognizing the unfalsifiability of the system is the first step toward reclaiming your own discernment.
