# Ship an Opinionated Default Expose One Knob
## Claim
Tools reduce setup friction fastest when they ship a working opinionated default and expose a single knob users are expected to tune.
<!-- atomicity: 1 idea ✓ -->
## Scope & conditions
- Holds when the default is genuinely usable out of the box for most users and the one knob is discoverable without documentation-diving.
- Breaks when the default silently fails for most users' actual data — here, a naming-convention regex tuned to the author's own filenames won't match a new user's files, so the "one knob" needed is really a required step, not an optional tweak.
- Applies to plugin/script distribution generally, not specifically to Obsidian or Excalidraw.
## Evidence
A one-click Obsidian icon-library script replaces what used to be a manual, multi-step image-library setup, but ships pre-configured with the author's own settings — thumbnail size, hotkeys, and naming-convention regex all need local retuning. The single-install win is real; the tradeoff is that "one click" undersells how much of the pre-configured default a new user actually has to touch before it works for them.
> "You can also change the thumbnail size."

## Tests / falsifiers
- Survey new users of the script on whether the pre-configured default worked without touching the naming regex — if most needed no changes, the "needs local tuning" framing overstates the friction.
- Find a comparable one-click tool where the shipped default required *more than one* knob turned before working — that would suggest the "one knob" framing understates typical real-world setup cost.
