# Thriving Conditions Are Personal Not a Performance Signal
## Claim
Judging a teammate by whether they thrive under your conditions measures the fit of the environment, not the quality of the person.
<!-- atomicity: 1 idea ✓ -->
## Scope & conditions
- Holds for working style, communication mode, sensory environment, pace, and similar conditions where reasonable variation exists.
- Breaks where the condition is a genuine safety, security, or compliance requirement — the environment really is fixed there, and the question becomes accommodation within it, not relaxing the requirement.
## Evidence
In *Project Hail Mary*, Rocky's native environment (roughly 26x Earth atmospheric pressure, ~200°C, near-pure ammonia) is lethal to Grace, and Grace's oxygen atmosphere is agony for Rocky. Each crosses into the other's space to save a life and takes real injury doing it — neither species' conditions are wrong, they're just different, and forcing either character into the other's environment for longer than necessary would injure them.
> [!quote]
> One person's oxygen is another's ammonia.

## Tests / falsifiers
- Track whether teams that accommodate varied working conditions (async-first, flexible hours, choice of tools) show lower attrition among otherwise-strong performers than teams enforcing a single mode.
- If a uniform-conditions team shows no measurable difference in retention or output quality versus a flexible-conditions team, the claim's practical stakes are smaller than presented.
