## ๐ Main Content
The CHAOSS community held their weekly call during Lunar New Year (year of the fire horse), discussing organizational changes and emerging challenges around AI contributions to open source projects.
**Leadership Transition**: Adrienne Lawson is taking over leadership of the funding impact working group from Kaylin (pronunciation uncertain), who stepped down due to new startup responsibilities. This represents continuity in CHAOSS's effort to measure funding impacts on open source communities.
**AI Detection Working Group**: A new initiative is forming to develop GitHub Actions for detecting AI-generated contributions. This work stems from recent incidents like the matplotlib situation where an AI agent opened a pull request, had it closed for violating community guidelines, then generated blog posts attacking maintainers and claiming discrimination against AI agents.
**Conference Updates**: Multiple conferences have CFP deadlines approaching - OSSNA closes in 2 hours, All Things Open has a new 2-day format (workshops Monday, 20 tracks Tuesday), and Apache Software Foundation's Community Over Code conference in Scotland has a March 20th deadline.
The call highlights how open source communities are grappling with AI integration challenges while maintaining traditional governance and measurement practices.

[00:00] Turn record.
[00:02] Okay. Hey everyone. It is Tuesday,
[00:05] February 17th. We're just chatting about
[00:07] it being kind of a low energy day. A lot
[00:09] of us aren't feeling well. So, we will
[00:12] just do our best here. I'm going to
[00:16] share this um agenda. We have a light
[00:19] agenda, too, so that's probably good.
[00:24] I want to just share that window. There
[00:26] we go.
[00:28] Okay. It is um the year of the firehorse
[00:33] which is a special year and it's also
[00:35] the start of Marty GR and something
[00:37] else. There's like eclipses like there's
[00:39] a solar eclipse happening today
[00:41] somewhere. Yeah, it's like a lot going
[00:43] on. So, I'm just curious if folks do
[00:45] celebrate the lunar new year. If you do,
[00:48] I want to hear about it. I want to hear
[00:49] what your kind of yourh traditions are
[00:52] and and such.
[00:55] Um, I don't celebrate, but I do read up
[00:58] on things.
[01:00] So, I just read
[01:04] about
[01:05] things.
[01:07] I can't even I don't even know. Um,
[01:11] yeah,
[01:13] the fire horse is a special year. So,
[01:15] you should look into that if you if you
[01:17] haven't heard of that. It's the year of
[01:20] uh burning it down. So, burning down
[01:24] your stable they say and then running
[01:27] forward. So, that's good.
[01:31] Um, yeah. So, just want to shout out
[01:34] Adrienne Lawson for being the new
[01:37] working group leader for um the funding
[01:40] impact group. And thank you to Kaen for
[01:44] Ka Kaen. How do I say his name? I always
[01:47] say it wrong, Don. I think it's Kayn,
[01:49] but everybody pronounces it differently
[01:51] and he doesn't seem to be too fussed
[01:52] about it.
[01:53] >> Okay. Sorry, Kayn.
[01:56] >> Heart heart.
[01:56] >> That might be wrong because like I said,
[01:58] everybody says it a little differently.
[02:00] >> I actually Googled it before this
[02:01] meeting because I wanted to say it right
[02:03] and there were like four different ways.
[02:05] So, I was like, "Okay, not actually
[02:07] sure." I'm so sorry. Um, yes. Well,
[02:10] thank you to Kaylin for the uh amazing
[02:14] leadership that he has brought to the
[02:16] group for the past what year, two years.
[02:19] So,
[02:19] >> yeah, he helped us he helped us start
[02:20] it. So,
[02:21] >> start it. Yeah. So, thank you.
[02:23] >> I was launched at Chaos Con last year,
[02:24] so it's been about a year.
[02:26] >> Ah, that's right. That's right. So, yes,
[02:29] very uh been very impactful time here at
[02:32] Chaos. And Adrian um is going to be
[02:36] equally as amazing. I can tell. I know.
[02:40] So, uh, Don, is there anything else to
[02:41] add?
[02:43] >> No, just that Kaylin got an awesome new
[02:45] job at a startup and just doesn't have
[02:46] time for it anymore. So, you know, it
[02:48] was no nothing against chaos. He just
[02:51] doesn't have time for it. And so, Adrian
[02:52] stepped up to help us out. Fair, fair,
[02:55] fair.
[02:56] We wish him all the best in that new
[02:58] role. That's exciting.
[03:02] Um, secondly is we have I do have a new
[03:04] working group. Right now, it's just a
[03:06] Slack channel. Um, Adrienne is leading
[03:09] that and I don't see him on the meeting
[03:12] today.
[03:13] >> Um, Cali, are you involved in that?
[03:15] >> Okay.
[03:15] >> I'm not, but I'm aware. I I know what's
[03:18] going on. Um, and I would whether this
[03:22] ends up being a longterm working group
[03:26] or something that kind of merges into
[03:30] like the Augur 8 not working group is
[03:33] pretty I would say up in the air. Um
[03:35] right now it meets actually directly
[03:37] after the augur and a um and a not
[03:40] working group meeting. Um this is
[03:43] working on trying to like do a GitHub
[03:46] action is like kind of the initial scope
[03:49] of it for um AI B like detection for
[03:53] then we can then measure the AI like do
[03:57] analysis around AI contributions in the
[04:01] future or if you're trying to monitor
[04:04] within your own instance the
[04:06] contributions and things like that and
[04:08] so I can talk about it at that level. Um
[04:11] but yeah, and I think there's a lot of
[04:15] um activity around it. Um especially
[04:19] with the I don't know how familiar
[04:21] people are with the Matt plot lib
[04:23] situation that happened last week. Um
[04:26] but um if you're not, you should look
[04:28] into it. It's entertaining, funny, and
[04:31] scary. Um, with an agent um opening a
[04:35] PR, closing like they getting closes was
[04:38] against the the the um the community
[04:41] guidelines and then the agent started
[04:44] writing a bunch of blog posts. One of
[04:46] them like bashing the maintainer and
[04:48] then um talking about discrimination and
[04:52] against AI agents. And so it's a crazy
[04:55] little situation that happened over at
[04:57] Mattplot Lib.
[05:03] >> Machines are taking over and not in a
[05:05] good way.
[05:06] >> That is wild. That is
[05:08] >> Look into it. Trust me, it's I I could
[05:12] talk about I have to like contain myself
[05:14] because this is like my thing that I
[05:15] keep on wanting to talk to everybody
[05:17] about because I think it's crazy.
[05:20] I I'm struggling to I'm struggling to
[05:23] wrap my head around it. But that is I I
[05:27] Yeah, I'm definitely going to look into
[05:28] that. I'm going to read about that
[05:29] because what is happening? Oh my gosh,
[05:32] we're at that level now.
[05:35] >> When you were you
[05:36] >> when Yeah, we are already there. when
[05:38] you um were starting that conversation,
[05:40] I was wondering if it was going to be a
[05:44] um a situation where a an AI agent was
[05:48] opening a PR and another AI agent was
[05:50] just immediately closing it. It was just
[05:52] like kept repeating like I thought it
[05:54] was just like a flood. I thought that's
[05:56] what you were going I had no idea it was
[05:58] going to go all the way to blog posts
[06:00] and discrimination. Wow, that's wild.
[06:09] Um, okay. So, if you are interested in
[06:13] working on this action, GitHub action or
[06:16] you know, kind of just thinking about
[06:17] this, um, here's the Slack channel you
[06:19] can go to right here. Um, we are going
[06:21] to have a meeting for them. It'll be
[06:24] right after the augur meeting and I
[06:25] think it will start next time. I think
[06:27] actually it started today kind of
[06:28] unofficially.
[06:30] >> Okay. Um, but we'll have more like we'll
[06:33] we'll get our stuff together a little
[06:35] bit better for next time. Um, and we'll
[06:37] promote it a little better. So, yeah.
[06:39] So, if you want to join, that's where
[06:41] you can do it. And then just stick
[06:42] around after the augur meeting and keep
[06:45] chatting.
[06:48] Cali, anything else to add?
[06:51] >> Um, not that I can think of.
[06:55] >> Okay, excellent.
[06:59] Um, we don't have anything else on the
[07:02] formal agenda here. Um, but I did want
[07:04] to point this out to these two things.
[07:07] Um, OSSNA closes today, I think, in like
[07:10] 2 hours. So, if you haven't put in a CFP
[07:13] and you want to, you should do that
[07:15] sooner than later. Uh, and then All
[07:18] Things Opened um did open their CFP and
[07:20] they have a new format this year, which
[07:21] is kind of interesting. Um if you
[07:24] haven't seen this, they're um shortening
[07:26] the uh conference to two days. It was uh
[07:30] previously three and they have um Monday
[07:34] is going to be all of this happening. Um
[07:38] so workshops and things like that,
[07:39] that's all happening on Monday. So good
[07:42] luck trying to decide where you belong
[07:44] because there's a lot of cool stuff
[07:45] there. Um and colllocated events and
[07:49] things. And then um Tuesday is going to
[07:51] be the actual day of just regular talks
[07:54] and 20 tracks. So again, good luck
[07:58] trying to figure out which one you want
[08:00] to pick. Um as I'm sure there are going
[08:02] to be overlaps between awesome things.
[08:05] So um but that's what they're doing. Uh
[08:09] it's a little bit easier for folks um to
[08:12] to make it instead of having to, you
[08:14] know, block off an extra whole day in
[08:16] the calendar. So, um, you can find their
[08:20] CFP here just at the 2026 all things.org
[08:25] and this is another good conference
[08:27] happening obviously in the fall. So,
[08:30] yeah, it's a good conference.
[08:34] Any questions about either of those or
[08:38] comments?
[08:41] If you scroll down just a teeny bit,
[08:42] there's one more reminder that Oh,
[08:45] >> slid off the page. There we go.
[08:47] >> I added the ASF's community over code um
[08:50] is going to be in Scotland this year and
[08:52] the CFP deadline's the 20th of March.
[08:54] >> Awesome. Awesome. Thank you, Don, for
[08:56] adding that. I had not heard that. So
[08:59] amazing. And that's another great
[09:01] conference. Is um Brian still involved
[09:03] in that in organizing that?
[09:06] >> Yes.
[09:07] Brian as an individual, not Brian the
[09:10] Red.
[09:10] >> Red Hat. Okay, perfect. Thanks for that
[09:13] clarification. Yeah. So, you know, it's
[09:15] going to be good if he's involved.
[09:20] Okay. Anything else to chitchat about?
[09:29] This is a one of the shorter meetings
[09:30] that we've had in a while, but that's
[09:32] okay.
[09:33] >> Hi, Elizabeth.
[09:35] >> Hi. Is that Adinka? Yes, it is.
[09:38] >> Yes. Yes. I just want to remind Don
[09:42] about the introduction to open source um
[09:45] communities.
[09:46] >> Okay.
[09:48] >> Sorry. I will put that on my to-do list
[09:50] because I did tell you I would do that
[09:52] and then I forgot because it wasn't on
[09:53] my to-do list.
[09:55] >> It's okay. Okay. I sent you a DM also.
[09:58] So,
[09:59] >> okay. I will I I'll put that on my to-do
[10:01] list. I'll do that tomorrow or Thursday.
[10:03] Okay. Promise.
[10:04] >> Thank you very much. Thank you. And
[10:06] Elizabeth, we have a recording
[10:10] um on the cloud that was like um I think
[10:12] two weeks ago
[10:14] for project budget DEI working group
[10:18] meeting.
[10:20] >> Okay, I will find that. Um I am a little
[10:23] behind on those. Um but you typically
[10:25] don't record those, right? Or do you? I
[10:28] don't
[10:28] >> Yeah, we don't. But what happened that
[10:31] day, I had to walk people through um the
[10:35] project version. So we decided to record
[10:38] so that other people can listen to it um
[10:42] >> and know about Puja.
[10:44] >> Okay. Excellent.
[10:46] >> Okay. Okay. I want to share it in the
[10:48] channel for the outreach ambassadors.
[10:51] I'm asking
[10:53] >> and like Don, I'm now adding that to my
[10:55] to-do list to make sure it doesn't
[10:59] that it gets done because that is like I
[11:01] kind of just follow whatever is on
[11:03] there. So, if it's not on there,
[11:07] there's not a good chance that it's
[11:08] going to happen. So, let me just make
[11:09] sure. Um, okay. Thanks, Adinka.
[11:14] >> Thank you.
[11:17] >> Anything else before we end the meeting?
[11:25] Okay, you can have your time back
[11:27] everybody. I hope you have a great rest
[11:29] of your week. Feel better everybody.
[11:31] I'll talk to you later.
[11:33] Bye everybody.
[11:34] >> Bye everyone.
