He identifies two main challenges: privacy protection for users employing AI tools, and fair compensation for content creators whose work gets scraped by AI systems. On privacy, Zeldman envisions beneficial AI use cases like analyzing personal work patterns but warns against AI systems inappropriately accessing personal information. He suggests WordPress could implement policies allowing site owners to control AI scraping and require compensation when content is used commercially. The broader concern is economic sustainability for web creators. As users increasingly rely on AI chatbots for information instead of visiting websites directly, traditional revenue models (advertising, subscriptions) face disruption. Without intervention, Zeldman warns of a death spiral where lack of compensation leads to reduced content creation, ultimately resulting in AI systems training on AI-generated content. The solution involves WordPress facilitating structured data that serves both AI discovery and human web experiences, while ensuring creators maintain control over their content and receive fair compensation for its use. ## ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Notes #### โฑ๏ธ [00:00](https://youtu.be/1SHdlDF-_Fs?t=0) โ€” [H1] Introduction and privacy concerns with AI - Key idea: Privacy is crucial when AI tools access personal data and communications - Evidence: "How do you give AI access to everything you do and make sure that it won't say hey I see I hear you're in queer romatic um when did you know you were queer" #### โฑ๏ธ [01:15](https://youtu.be/1SHdlDF-_Fs?t=75) โ€” [H2] WordPress role in controlling AI scraping - Key idea: WordPress should enable site owners to control and monetize AI access to their content - Evidence: "WordPress can do is say, 'All right, you're not allowed to scrape this site for content, period.' As Jeffrey Zeldman points out, we're at a critical juncture where AI systems could either enhance web discovery while compensating creators, or create a destructive cycle that hollows out original content creation. The WordPress community should prioritize developing tools that let site owners control AI access, implement fair compensation mechanisms, and create structured data standards that serve both human and AI needs. This isn't just about technologyโ€”it's about preserving the economic foundation that makes diverse web content possible. I'm Eric Caravac. Today's
[00:05] episode features a segment from part two
[00:07] of my interview with Alysa Park
[00:09] co-founder Jeffrey Zelman. Here Jeffrey
[00:12] discusses the role WordPress and the
[00:14] open-source movement can play in
[00:16] protecting privacy.
[00:18] Now you can check out the entire
[00:19] interview over on our WP Minute Plus
[00:21] channel. Visit thewpmin.com
[00:24] for all the details.
[00:28] Um, what role can WordPress and
[00:32] open-source play in keeping the open web
[00:35] alive and thriving and and and kind of
[00:38] keep pushing us forward on accessibility
[00:41] and standards and privacy especially
[00:43] that's another big one that we we need
[00:45] to
[00:46] >> privacy is huge privacy is huge and when
[00:48] you're working with AI how do you
[00:50] guarantee privacy if if you're using an
[00:54] AI tool to say look at every message I
[00:56] send all day long look at every comp I
[01:00] make read every article I publish and
[01:03] tell me every day like what's the most
[01:05] important after a week tell me what what
[01:07] patterns do you see in my work how can I
[01:09] improve my work like that to me is an
[01:12] okay use of AI
[01:14] um but how do you give AI access to
[01:18] everything you do and make sure that it
[01:20] won't say hey I see I hear you're in
[01:22] queer romatic um when did you know you
[01:24] were queer like no it's not supposed to
[01:26] do any of that. Right? So, um just as an
[01:30] example, uh I think with AI now, I think
[01:35] one thing WordPress can do is say, "All
[01:37] right, you're not allowed to scrape this
[01:39] site for content, period." Or you the
[01:43] owner of this site will let you scrape
[01:45] this site for content, but you have to
[01:48] pay them a certain amount because
[01:50] they're losing advertising revenue or
[01:53] subscription revenue or whatever it is.
[01:55] So helps to compensate the people we
[01:57] serve as we all deal with this huge
[02:01] change in the ecosystem. Similarly,
[02:04] WordPress can uh can say all right you
[02:08] know five years ago if you had a coffee
[02:11] shop we could make you could make a
[02:13] WordPress website but half the time
[02:16] someone's going to typed into chat GBT
[02:18] or into Claude or whatever um where's
[02:20] there a coffee shop near me? I they
[02:23] should still be able to find your coffee
[02:25] shop. It should still be able it should
[02:27] be able to grab the information from
[02:28] your website. It should provide a link
[02:31] to your website like you know words
[02:33] won't do it. Go look at the pictures.
[02:36] Basically, since we know that these huge
[02:39] companies are going to be grabbing and
[02:42] these huge new tools are going to be
[02:44] grabbing content without necessarily
[02:47] recompensing the people who create the
[02:49] content, the web will die. five years of
[02:52] that and there'll be no new content left
[02:54] and then it'll just be bots scraping
[02:56] what bots wrote to serve to bots like
[02:59] it'll just be so how can we continue to
[03:02] serve the human beings here whether they
[03:05] use AI or not whether they like AI or
[03:07] not how can we help them deal with this
[03:10] change that's coming from all at us from
[03:12] all sides um I think that's a really
[03:16] important role that uh WordPress can
[03:19] play I don't know what I know that the
[03:22] website of the future, which is
[03:24] something one of our adviserss talks
[03:26] about, um
[03:28] I don't know that it's any different
[03:30] from the website of now, but it's going
[03:32] to have to have underpinning to it under
[03:35] the surface that that you know makes it
[03:39] more easily
[03:41] not only for Google to find, but for all
[03:44] these bots to find. like how do I make
[03:46] sure that my content is getting to the
[03:48] the agent that's going to book my
[03:51] client, you know, that's going to book
[03:52] this user's airline tickets and how do I
[03:55] still let them know that they should
[03:57] come to my website if they have a
[03:58] problem with the ticket or whatever. Um,
[04:02] so I I think it's that negotiating the
[04:05] rift that AI is temporarily creating and
[04:08] hopefully only temporarily between
[04:10] creators and every
[04:13] and the thing we want, which is come to
[04:15] my website and do a, you know, come to
[04:18] my website and do B, come to my website,
[04:20] subscribe, check out my advertiser.
[04:23] Don't do any of that. I even even if I
[04:25] have a free website that's not monetized
[04:27] like zeldman.com
[04:29] uh I still want people to come to it. I
[04:32] still want you to read my words the way
[04:34] I laid them out if at all possible. Yes,
[04:36] you can read them in RSS. Yes, you can
[04:39] read them any number of ways. Yes, you
[04:42] can have, you know, you can read them
[04:44] scraped onto LinkedIn or whatever. But I
[04:46] also want you to come here because I
[04:48] like my new design and I want you to see ๐Ÿ“„ **Full text:** ![[Full Document Contents/Articles/Can WordPress Save the Open Web.md|Can WordPress Save the Open Web? by YouTube]] ## Highlights - example, uh I think with AI now, I think one thing WordPress can do is say, "All right, you're not allowed to scrape this site for content, period."
