## ๐ Summary
- **What happened:** Zsolt, the channel's presenter, walks through the first chapters of the Slideshow v4 script for the Obsidian Excalidraw plugin in 23:19. The video covers installing the script, building frame-based slides, naming decks and slides, excluding slides, choosing marker frames over normal frames, and fitting frames to the 1920ร1080 presentation ratio.
- **Why it matters:** A single Excalidraw drawing can now carry several named presentations, per-slide Markdown presenter notes, and a presenter view on a second display. The script source confirms notes live in the drawing itself (`frame.customData.slideshow.notes`), so a talk and its visual summary stay in one `.excalidraw.md` file.
- **Key stakeholders:** Obsidian Excalidraw users who present from their drawings; the plugin maintainer (GitHub `zsviczian`); members of the paid Sketch Your Mind community, where the rest of the course lives.
- **Risks and tradeoffs:** The script needs Excalidraw 2.27.0 or newer and asks for autostart permission. Presenter view doesn't run on Obsidian Mobile. Normal frames move and crop their contents, which broke an arrow binding in the 16:01 demo. The YouTube cut stops at 22:43; speaker notes, animations, line-to-frame conversion, and export settings are listed at 0:00โ2:34 but only covered in the paid course.
- **Bottom line:** Switch to marker frames, fit each frame to the presentation aspect ratio, and name every slide. Those three steps come from the free portion and are enough to present an existing drawing.
## ๐ Main Content
- **Two slideshow types.** Frame-based decks use the drawing's frames as slides. Line-based decks use the points of a line or arrow as the slide path. The free video covers frame-based decks only. Per the script docs, a drawing holds one frame deck plus any number of named line decks.
- **Install and launch.** You install Slideshow from the Excalidraw script library, reached from the Obsidian tools panel. Pin it by long-pressing its button. Launch modifiers, confirmed in the script docs: plain click = fullscreen, Alt/Option = windowed, Shift = resume from the saved slide, Cmd/Ctrl = open the sidepanel instead of presenting (the video doesn't mention Cmd/Ctrl). You can also run it from the command palette (Ctrl+P, "slideshow").
- **Autostart.** On first run the script asks for autostart permission so it can add an edit button to frames and lines. The 2.27.0 release notes add `registerAutostart()` and an **Autostart scripts** command. The caption's "Excalidraw 227" means 2.27.0; the script calls `verifyMinimumPluginVersion("2.27.0")`.
- **Sidepanel and slide sorter.** The pencil button opens the sidepanel. There you name the deck, rename slides, reorder them, exclude slides, and press Play. Excluded slides stay in the drawing; the camera still pans across them, but the deck doesn't stop there.
- **Normal frames vs. marker frames.** A normal frame owns the elements inside it: it crops them when resized and drags them when moved. Moving one broke an arrow's connection in the 16:01 demo. A marker frame (dotted outline) only marks a region, so elements stay put and arrows stay bound. Zsolt says marker frames don't appear in image or PDF exports while normal frames do. You toggle between the two in the element properties panel.
- **Slide sizing.** A frame sets the center of the view, but the screen's shape decides how much of the drawing shows. A circle placed beside a frame showed up during the 20:25 demo. The **Fit frame to presentation aspect ratio** action resizes the frame to the configured ratio, 1920ร1080 by default (confirmed in the script source), so you can position it to hide content you want to reveal later.
- **Terms.** *Frame*: an Excalidraw container element. *Marker frame*: an Obsidian Excalidraw frame variant that doesn't own its contents. *Presenter view*: a desktop-only Obsidian popout window showing the current slide, Markdown notes, and the next slide or build.
- **Uncertainties and verification status.**
- Verified against GitHub on 2026-09-13: latest release 2.27.3 (published 2026-09-06); autostart API in 2.27.0 (published 2026-09-03); Slideshow.md embeds this video and names it "Slideshow v4"; last commit 4f6dc62 on 2026-09-13; minimum plugin 2.27.0; 1920ร1080 default; Alt/Shift/Cmd modifiers; presenter view desktop-only; excluded slides omitted from presentation and PDF.
- Overstated at 11:48: the video says sort order no longer depends on slide names. The script docs say frames without slideshow metadata keep alphabetical order until the first sorter change writes explicit `order` metadata.
- Not verified: the claim that marker frames never export to PNG or PDF (I didn't read the plugin's export code or run an export); the marker-frame toggle location; the Sketch Your Mind course contents and pricing.
- Caption spellings: "Xournalpp" at 3:26 and 3:56 likely means "Excalidraw" (caption spelling; unverified). "Sketchnote Mind community" is the Sketch Your Mind Community, confirmed by the `community.sketch-your-mind.com/slideshow` link in the script header. "Xcolyture Mastery" at 22:43 matches "Excalidraw Mastery" at 2:34 (caption spelling; unverified).
## ๐๏ธ Notes
#### โฑ๏ธ [0:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=0) Course outline
- Slideshow is on its fourth major version.
- Planned topics: first slideshow, frame vs. line decks, slide sorter and sidepanel, progressive reveals ("animations"), speaker notes, conversion, print and export, expert settings.
#### โฑ๏ธ [1:17](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=77) Speaker notes and presenter view
- Each slide can hold presenter notes; a separate presenter view runs on a second screen.
- Example: present from a MacBook with an iPad attached through macOS Sidecar as the notes screen.
- Line decks and frame decks convert into each other; the reasons are held for the paid course.
#### โฑ๏ธ [2:34](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=154) Scope disclosure
- The YouTube video covers only the first chapters. The full course sits in the paid Sketch Your Mind community alongside Mind Map Builder, Excalidraw Mastery, and a daily visual note-taking course.
#### โฑ๏ธ [3:26](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=206) Installing the script
- Obsidian tools panel โ "install or update" scripts opens the script library; Slideshow sits at the top, or search for it.
#### โฑ๏ธ [4:30](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=270) Creating slides with frames
- Add frames with the frame tool from the more-tools menu or the F key.
- The demo frames use a dotted outline: marker frames.
#### โฑ๏ธ [5:42](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=342) Pinning and launching
- Long-press the Slideshow button to pin it to the tools sidebar.
- Plain click runs fullscreen; Alt/Option-click runs in the active Obsidian window.
#### โฑ๏ธ [6:52](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=412) Autostart prompt
- First run asks for autostart so the script can add buttons to lines and frames.
- Zsolt recommends **Auto start** over **Ask me every time**, citing the 2.27 autostart feature.
- Arrow keys and a slide picker move between slides.
#### โฑ๏ธ [8:40](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=520) Command palette and sidepanel
- The command palette (Ctrl+P โ "slideshow") starts the same script.
- After first use, frames show buttons; the pencil opens the sidepanel, whose Play button matches Alt-click.
#### โฑ๏ธ [10:05](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=605) Naming the deck
- Rename "frame slideshow" to a deck name such as "lessons 1-5 presentation."
- Reason: one book-on-a-page drawing serves a full walk-through, a single-topic talk, and course input, so each deck needs a name.
#### โฑ๏ธ [11:48](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=708) Naming slides
- Slides default to 01, 02; rename in the sorter or select a frame and press Enter.
- Named slides show in the presenter's slide picker along with the slide count.
#### โฑ๏ธ [13:49](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=829) Excluding slides
- Hide a slide in the sorter; the deck skips it, but the camera still pans past its area.
#### โฑ๏ธ [14:30](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=870) Normal frame demo
- Setup: label A outside a normal frame, label B and a connecting arrow inside.
- Shrinking the frame crops the arrow; dragging the frame breaks the arrow's connection.
#### โฑ๏ธ [17:11](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=1031) Marker frames
- Converted to marker frames, moving the frame leaves elements in place and keeps the arrow bound.
- Normal frames still suit exact-size crops.
#### โฑ๏ธ [17:52](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=1072) Export behavior
- Zsolt says marker frames don't appear in image or PDF exports; normal frames do.
- Toggle marker frame on or off in the element properties panel.
#### โฑ๏ธ [19:06](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=1146) Slide sizing problem
- The frame sets the view center; a wider screen shows neighboring content. A circle next to the frame leaked into the slide.
- "Present current slide in window" launches from the selected frame.
#### โฑ๏ธ [21:15](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=1275) Fit to aspect ratio
- The fit button resizes the frame to the presentation ratio (default 1920ร1080).
- Alt+Shift-click resumes from the last slide in a window; the circle stayed hidden.
#### โฑ๏ธ [21:57](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU&t=1317) Wrap-up
- The free portion ends with frame presentations; the rest is in the Sketch Your Mind community, which Zsolt says you can join for one month.

## ๐ฃ๏ธ Paraphrase
- **0:00โ3:26.** Slideshow is on version 4. The free video shows how to build a first deck and explains frame vs. line decks. The paid course adds the sorter, reveals, presenter notes, conversion, export, and settings.
- **3:26โ6:21.** Install Slideshow from the script library, draw frames with F, and pin the script's button to the tools sidebar.
- **6:21โ10:05.** Click to run fullscreen or Alt-click for a window. Allow autostart on first run so the script can add its edit buttons. The command palette and sidepanel Play button start the same deck.
- **10:05โ13:49.** Name the deck, because one drawing can hold several talks. Name each slide so the presenter's picker shows useful labels.
- **13:49โ19:06.** Exclude slides you want to skip. Use marker frames instead of normal frames: they don't move or crop your drawing, and Zsolt says they stay out of exports.
- **19:06โ23:19.** Screens are wider than most frames, so neighboring content leaks in. Fit each frame to the 1920ร1080 ratio, then position it to hide what comes next. The rest of the course is in the paid community.
## ๐ฐ Newsletter
- **Present from your visual notes.** If you sketch talk outlines in Obsidian Excalidraw, Slideshow v4 turns a drawing's frames into a deck with per-slide Markdown presenter notes and a presenter view on a second screen. It needs plugin 2.27.0 or newer; 2.27.3 shipped 2026-09-06. The 23-minute [getting-started video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DDY8rRDzdU) covers setup; the [script docs](https://github.com/zsviczian/obsidian-excalidraw-plugin/blob/master/ea-scripts/Slideshow.md) list every shortcut. WordCamp speakers: use marker frames, then press the fit-to-aspect-ratio button so your next slide's content doesn't show early.
## โ
Action Items
#### DevRel
- Developer advocacy: pick one book visual in `Excalidraw/` and build a 5-slide marker-frame deck from it; time a run-through in windowed mode (Alt-click) to test whether it can back a 10-minute talk.
- Education: for a workshop, name decks by audience ("full walk-through," "single topic") on one drawing, the pattern shown at 11:16.
- Developer experience: record the launch modifiers (click, Alt, Shift, Cmd/Ctrl) on a one-line speaker cheat sheet, since the video omits Cmd/Ctrl.

## ๐งช Hypotheses
- H1: Exporting a drawing to PNG and PDF shows normal-frame outlines and hides marker-frame outlines.
- H2: Dragging a normal frame that contains one end of a bound arrow breaks the binding; dragging a marker frame in the same setup keeps it.
- H3: On a 16:10 laptop display, a frame not fitted to 1920ร1080 shows elements outside the frame; after the fit action, those elements stay off screen.
- H4: Renaming frames before any sorter action changes slide order (alphabetical); after one sorter reorder, renames don't change order.
- H5: Editing a presenter note changes the `.excalidraw.md` file on disk within seconds, so notes sync with the vault.
## ๐ Methodology
- Use a copy of one book visual (for example, a file from `Excalidraw/`) in a test vault running plugin 2.27.3 and the v4 script.
- H1: add one normal and one marker frame, export PNG and PDF, and inspect both files.
- H2: build the AโarrowโB setup from 14:30, drag each frame type, and check the arrow's start and end bindings.
- H3: present the same slide windowed at two window widths, before and after the fit action; screenshot each.
- H4: create three frames named C, A, B; start the deck; reorder once in the sorter; rename; restart and log order.
- H5: note the file's modification time, type a note, blur the field, and compare modification time and file diff.
## โ Questions
- Does the installed script in `Excalidraw/Scripts/Downloaded/Slideshow.md` update in place from the script library, or does the old copy (which checks for plugin 2.8.0) need removal first?
- Do marker frames also stay out of SVG exports and embedded `![[...excalidraw]]` previews in notes?
- Can a line deck and the frame deck on one drawing share presenter notes, or does each deck store its own?
- How does presenter view behave on a projector that mirrors the laptop display instead of extending it?
## ๐ฎ Future Research
- The paid chapters on reveals, line-to-frame conversion, and export settings; the script docs describe fade, slide, and zoom builds defaulting to 350 ms, available on frame slides only.
- Whether PDF export produces text a screen reader can read.
- How a 293-drawing vault of book visuals performs with sorter previews, which the docs say render lazily through a byte-budgeted cache.
## ๐ก Implications
- **Practice:** Book visuals in `Excalidraw/` can double as talk decks without rebuilding slides in separate presentation software; notes stay in the drawing file.
- **Practice:** Switching existing normal frames to marker frames avoids the cropping and binding breaks shown at 16:01, but check export output first if a drawing's frames act as visible borders.
- **Security:** Autostart scripts run whenever an Excalidraw view opens; the 2.27.0 permission prompt and **Autostart scripts** command are where you review that grant.
- **Education:** One visual with several named decks supports a full walk-through, a topic talk, and a course segment from the same source file, per the 11:16 example.
- **Funding models:** Tutorial creators publish the first chapters free and move the rest behind a paid community, as this video discloses at 2:34.
### ๐ง Learning Styles Assessment
- Reading level estimate: Flesch-Kincaid grade 6.0 and Flesch reading ease 80.1 on the 3,318-word auto-caption transcript (computed with a vowel-group syllable count; caption punctuation lowers the estimate).
#### ๐ Visual learners
- Present: live screen demos of frames, sidepanel, and the leaking-circle example at 20:25.
- Improve: a labeled before/after still of normal vs. marker frames; on-screen labels for the buttons referred to as "here."
#### ๐ Aural learners
- Present: continuous narration naming keys (F, Alt, Shift, Ctrl+P).
- Improve: name each clicked control aloud instead of "click here."
#### ๐ฃ๏ธ Verbal learners
- Present: plain definitions of normal vs. marker frames at 16:37.
- Improve: a short glossary for frame, marker frame, deck, sorter, presenter view.
#### ๐งฉ Kinesthetic learners
- Present: step-by-step build of a deck you can follow in your own vault.
- Improve: a downloadable practice drawing with the AโarrowโB setup.
#### ๐ง Logical learners
- Present: cause and effect in the frame demo (frame owns elements โ drag breaks binding).
- Improve: a table of launch modifiers and their effects.
#### ๐งโ๐คโ๐ง Social learners
- Present: pointer to the Sketch Your Mind community.
- Improve: discussion prompts for sharing decks built from the course.
#### ๐งโโ๏ธ Solitary learners
- Present: self-paced 23-minute video.
- Improve: a checklist to confirm each step worked.
#### ๐ฟ Naturalistic learners
- Not applicable to this source โ the tutorial has no environmental or ecosystem content.
### ๐ Accessibility Assessment
#### Screen reader semantics
- Present: Not applicable to the video itself. The script docs describe `aria-label` text on its PDF button (for example, `printPdf` with width and height).
- Improve: confirm whether exported PDF slides carry text or only images (unverified).
#### Keyboard navigation
- Present: per the script docs, the sorter supports Arrow Up/Down focus, Enter to zoom, Space to toggle inclusion, and Alt+Arrow to reorder.
- Improve: the video demonstrates mouse clicks for most actions; show the keyboard path too.
#### Contrast and readability
- Present: not assessed โ I worked from the transcript and didn't view the video frames.
- Improve: check slide contrast against WCAG 2.2 SC 1.4.3 (4.5:1) when presenting drawn text.
#### Text resizing and reflow
- Present: the script docs list a presenter notes font-size setting.
- Improve: Not assessed for the video player.
#### Media and captions
- Present: YouTube auto-captions exist and were the capture source; they misspell names ("Xournalpp," "Xcolyture Mastery").
- Improve: corrected captions (SC 1.2.2) and narration of on-screen targets instead of "click here" (SC 1.2.5 audio description).
#### Forms and interactions
- Present: the sidepanel uses dropdowns for Start/Resume/Current, Fullscreen/Windowed, and Slides only/With Notes, per the docs.
- Improve: Not assessed โ no hands-on test.
#### Standards reference
- Gaps map to WCAG 2.2 SC 1.2.2 (captions), 1.2.5 (audio description), 1.4.3 (contrast), and 2.1.1 (keyboard) for exported and presented slides.
### ๐ DEIB Assessment
#### Cultural breadth
- Present: the video is English only. The script source bundles a full English UI catalog plus short catalogs (about 3 strings each, mostly startup errors) for German, Spanish, French, Russian, and Simplified Chinese.
- Improve: translated captions and a fuller translated UI.
#### Inclusive language
- Present: neutral second-person instructions.
- Improve: define "Sidecar" (a macOS-only feature) for Windows and Linux viewers.
#### Neurodiversity support
- Present: an outline at 0:00 and one topic per segment.
- Improve: chapter markers matching the outline; less filler ("uh," "um") in captions.
#### Representation
- Present: one presenter.
- Improve: Not applicable to this source โ a single-presenter tool tutorial.
#### Psychological safety
- Present: mistakes stay in ("Oops" at 16:01), which models recovering from errors.
- Improve: state the community price up front, since 2:34 and 22:43 point viewers to a paid signup without it.
### โ
Logical Validity
#### Strong reasoning
- Causal demonstration at 14:30โ17:52: the presenter builds the AโarrowโB setup, drags a normal frame, shows the binding break, then repeats with a marker frame. The claim rests on a reproducible test, not assertion.
- Problem-then-fix at 19:46โ21:57: the leaking circle shows the problem before the fit action solves it.
- Stated reason for naming decks at 11:16: one drawing serves three presentation contexts.
#### Fallacies
- Overgeneralization at 11:48 ("the sort order doesn't depend on the name of the slide"): the script docs say unsorted frames still order alphabetically until the first sorter change. Fix: add "after you reorder once in the sorter."
- Unsupported assertion at 17:52 ("marker frames are never printed"): no export is shown on screen. Fix: show an exported PNG or PDF.
- No formal fallacy tag applied; neither issue changes the tutorial's main steps.
#### Tone of voice
- Informal, first person, enthusiastic ("super cool and super efficient" at 1:17), with transparent disclosure of the paid course at 2:34.
### ๐ก๏ธ DARVO Analysis
- Not applicable to this source โ a software tutorial with no accusation, conflict, or defense of conduct.
- Deny: none present.
- Attack: none present.
- Reverse victim/offender: none present.
## ๐ฏ Conclusion
- Slideshow v4 lets a single Obsidian Excalidraw drawing act as several named decks with Markdown presenter notes; it requires plugin 2.27.0, and the vault already runs 2.27.3.
- Next steps: update the vault's older Slideshow script (it checks for plugin 2.8.0, not 2.27.0) from the script library; convert one book visual's frames to marker frames; fit them to 1920ร1080; add notes; run it windowed; test an export before trusting the "never printed" claim.

### ๐ง Permanent Candidates (H4)
#### [P1] A visual summary serves many talks through named paths
**Claim** (one sentence, Courtney's voice): A single visual summary can back several talks when each talk is a named sequence of regions on it.

## Highlights
- [1:17] Then we're going to talk about speaker notes. Now you can add your own presenter notes to each of the slides. And of course, you can not only just add them, but now there is a separate presenter view. So if you have two monitors, then on one monitor you can see the presenter view, the other the slides. For example, if you're at a conference and you're presenting from your MacBook and you have an iPad using the Sidecar feature in macOS, you can actually use your presenter viewer, have your presenter view on your iPad and you can control the presentation from there and see your notes. I think it's super cool and super [2:04] efficient. Then we're going to talk about how you can convert line-based slides into frame-based slides and the other way around and I think more importantly why you would want to do this in the first place. You can also print and export your slides. So we're going to talk about some of the settings around this, how you can set the aspect ratio of the page and yeah, how all of this works. - Note: Presenter view on a second display (e.g., iPad via macOS Sidecar) shows per-slide notes and the next slide.

- [11:16] It received a name. The name is good because then if you have multiple slideshows, imagine you have a big whiteboard, for example, my book on a pages. I use them in different contexts for different purposes. Sometimes I do an entire walk-through of my book on a page. Sometimes I focus on a topic or I use it as input for a course. So, I have multiple presentations on the same drawing, and that's why it's good to give these a name. [11:48] Now, some other things you can do here, you can also give your individual slides a name. So, you can see here right now my slides are called 01, 02, etc. This is a new feature that now the sort order doesn't depend on the name of the slide. Earlier, it was in alphabetical order. So, I can just simply give this slide a name. So, this is going to be frame presentations. ([View Highlight](https://read.readwise.io/read/01m2eg6k0673aew9rd8gheqqg7))
- Note: One book-on-a-page drawing carries several named presentations: full walk-through, single topic, course input.

- [16:37] So, the nature of normal frames is they capture the elements inside the frame, and in many cases this can be good. So, I think also the cropping of the frame can be super helpful. So, for example, if I want to size something to be exactly a certain size, and I want to crop items around it. We won't go into it now because this is not about that topic. Frames can be good for presentations. [17:11] Frankly, I don't prefer the normal frames because they they can damage my drawing the way you just saw how if I pull this I disconnect the line. Instead, I like to use marker frames. So, if I change these two to marker frames, then what you will see is if I change the position of the frame, it doesn't hide the entire drawing. And also, if I move the frame, it will not move the elements. I need to be deliberate. I can say that I'm going to now move the frame and letter B, and then of course the arrow will stay connected. ([View Highlight](https://read.readwise.io/read/01m2eg6qm8vbgmp8c2pq7pw95q))
- Note: Normal frames own and crop their contents, so dragging one breaks arrow bindings; marker frames don't own elements.

- [17:52] So, this is why I'm This is the reason why I created marker frames because for a number of use cases, I think it's better if the frame does not capture the elements. Also, marker frames are never printed. So, essentially, if you place a marker frame on your drawing and then you print it, either screenshot or well, not I mean, you export it as an image here via the export image menu. So, you export it as an image or you export it as PDF, the marker frames are not going to be shown. [18:33] The normal frames, they are going to show up. There are ways around it. I have a couple of settings, but that is not the topic today. So, that's hopefully that gives you clarity on why I'm using marker frames and not using normal frames for slideshows. And you can also see how you can change between them. Essentially, on the element properties panel, you can click here to switch marker frames on, off, and yeah, that's how it works. ([View Highlight](https://read.readwise.io/read/01m2eg6wm6hnd169mrqstnnanj))
- Note: Marker frames stay out of image and PDF exports; normal frames show up.

- [20:25] And you can see what happens. Essentially, the circle is part of the slide as well. And that's because the the slide itself provided a cutout, but then the entire screen or the area is bigger and the cutout was centered. So, things on the side appear. But sometimes, you don't want that thing on the side to appear because you want to hide it until the slideshow gets there because it would be yeah, a spoiler about the next slide. So, in that case, that's where this other button comes to the picture. So, you have this button that's going to fit the frame to the aspect ratio of the screen. So, [21:15] this is now our screen's aspect ratio. And with this, I can actually position the frame such So, this is how my the default aspect ratio is HD, so it's 1920 by 1080 uh resolution. If now I start the slideshow, and the way I'm going to start the slideshow is I'm going to hold down the Alt and the Shift key while pressing the button. Alt will start the presentation in this window. Shift is going to re- continue from the last slide, which was this slide. So, this is the easiest way. ([View Highlight](https://read.readwise.io/read/01m2eg72rh23n3afs7vn44yysb))
- Note: Fit each frame to the 1920x1080 presentation ratio so neighboring content doesn't leak into the slide.
