Unlike standard translations that translate from original languages, Brian Simmons claims divine commissioning through supernatural encounters, including a vision where Jesus "breathed on him" and promised to reveal "secrets of the Hebrew language." ### Translation Methodology Concerns The TPT demonstrates several problematic patterns: - **Extensive additions**: Verses often double or triple in length with added interpretive material - **Terminological insertions**: Consistent addition of signs-and-wonders movement vocabulary - **Theological reinterpretation**: Changing passages to support specific doctrinal positions - **Inconsistent italicization**: Failing to mark all added text as editorial addition ### Specific Examples of Problematic Translation #### Psalm 19 - ESV: "The heavens declare the glory of God" - TPT: "His testament is written in the stars...its gospel is clearly read" - The TPT transforms general revelation into specific "gospel in the stars" teaching #### Galatians 2:20 - ESV: "I have been crucified with Christ" - TPT: "My old identity has been co-crucified with Messiah...For the nails of his cross crucified me with him" - Adds entire phrases not present in the original text #### 2 Timothy 3:16 - ESV: "All Scripture is breathed out by God" - TPT: "Every scripture has been written by the Holy Spirit" - Changes inspiration doctrine toward dictation theory ### Sectarian Terminology Integration The TPT consistently adds vocabulary specific to charismatic/signs-and-wonders movements: - "Release" (as in "release forgiveness," "release supernatural peace") - "Activate your gift" - "Fresh revelation" - "Resurrection power" - "Manifest your kingdom realm" ### Changes to Bibliology The translation systematically alters passages about Scripture itself: - Psalm 1:2 changes "law of the Lord" to "true revelation of light" - John 5:39 adds "frantically" to describe Scripture study - Matthew 4:4 changes focus from written Word to ongoing revelation ## ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Notes #### โฑ๏ธ [00:01:30](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvlIDpjVyCs&t=90) Introduction and Claims of Supernatural Origin - Winger emphasizes this is "not just another translation" - TPT claims supernatural commissioning and angelic naming - Brian Simmons describes vision where Jesus breathed on him for translation work #### โฑ๏ธ [00:05:45](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvlIDpjVyCs&t=345) Psalm 19 Analysis - Demonstrates how TPT inserts "gospel in the stars" interpretation - Original text about general revelation transformed into specific astrological teaching - Shows pattern of theological reinterpretation rather than translation #### โฑ๏ธ [00:08:20](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvlIDpjVyCs&t=500) Galatians 2:20 Comparison - Reveals extensive textual additions not marked with italics - "For the nails of his cross crucified me with him" - completely fabricated phrase - Demonstrates inconsistent editorial marking #### โฑ๏ธ [00:15:30](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvlIDpjVyCs&t=930) Bibliology Concerns - Shows systematic changes to passages about Scripture itself - 2 Timothy 3:16 altered to support dictation theory of inspiration - Pattern of undermining biblical authority while claiming to enhance it #### โฑ๏ธ [00:25:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvlIDpjVyCs&t=1500) Terminological Analysis - Documents consistent insertion of signs-and-wonders movement vocabulary - "Release," "activate," "fresh revelation" added throughout - Makes Bible appear to validate specific theological positions #### โฑ๏ธ [00:35:15](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvlIDpjVyCs&t=2115) Lord's Prayer Example - Matthew 6:9-11 extensively rewritten with added concepts - "Kingdom realm" and "release forgiveness" inserted - Demonstrates how familiar passages are significantly altered #### โฑ๏ธ [00:45:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvlIDpjVyCs&t=2700) Proverbs 31 Reinterpretation - Brian Simmons claims special revelation about Proverbs 31 - Reinterprets virtuous woman as allegory for the Church - Shows eschatological insertions about discipling nations ## ๐Ÿ“š References - The Passion Translation website and FAQ - Brian Simmons interview with Sid Roth - ESV, NIV, NASB, King James translations for comparison - Accordance Bible software (mentioned as giveaway) ## ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Paraphrase Pastor Mike Winger presents a comprehensive critique of The Passion Translation, arguing it's fundamentally different from legitimate Bible translations. While standard translations work from original languages to render accurate meaning, the TPT claims supernatural inspiration and consistently adds interpretive material that supports specific theological positions. Winger demonstrates through numerous examples how the translation inserts terminology from charismatic movements, alters bibliology passages, and adds fabricated text. He concludes that unlike other translations which offer different renderings of the same meaning, the TPT changes the meaning itself to validate a particular sect of Christianity. ## ๐Ÿ“ฐ Newsletter ๐Ÿšจ **Translation Alert**: Pastor Mike Winger's deep-dive analysis of The Passion Translation raises serious red flags for WordPress site owners featuring Bible content. Unlike legitimate translations that work from original manuscripts, the TPT claims supernatural revelation and systematically inserts movement-specific terminology. Key concerns for content creators: - **SEO Impact**: Using TPT verses could mislead audiences expecting standard biblical text - **Theological Accuracy**: Extensive additions and alterations compromise scriptural integrity - **Content Liability**: Promoting questionable translations could affect site credibility **Recommended Action**: Stick with established translations (ESV, NIV, NASB) for biblical content. If discussing TPT, clearly label it as interpretive rather than translational work. Consider Winger's comparison tools and methodology for evaluating biblical resources. **Resources**: Check out Accordance Bible software for original language study tools that help verify translation accuracy. ## โœ… Action Items #### DevRel - **Systematic comparison methodology**: Provides concrete examples comparing TPT to established translations, demonstrating specific alterations rather than making general claims - **Pattern documentation**: Shows consistent terminological additions across multiple passages, establishing systematic rather than accidental problems - **Source verification**: References specific interviews and claims by the translator himself, avoiding secondhand accusations #### Fallacies - **Possible genetic fallacy**: While Simmons' claims about supernatural inspiration are relevant due to his unique translation approach, some criticism might overly focus on the source rather than just the textual evidence - **Potential confirmation bias**: Selection of examples might be cherry-picked to support predetermined conclusion, though the systematic nature suggests otherwise #### Tone of voice - Respectful but firm criticism focused on translation methodology rather than personal attack: "I'm not attacking those people. I'm not mad at those people. I don't hate those people. I think that this is just the fact of the matter." ### ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ DARVO Analysis - **Deny**: No evidence of denial strategies in Winger's analysis - **Attack**: Winger specifically avoids attacking Simmons personally, focusing on translation methodology - **Reverse victim/offender**: Not applicable to this content - The analysis demonstrates the opposite of DARVO - taking responsibility to warn about problematic translation while maintaining respectful tone toward persons involved ## ๐ŸŽฏ Conclusion Pastor Mike Winger's analysis demonstrates that The Passion Translation represents a fundamental departure from legitimate biblical translation work. Rather than translating from original languages, it systematically adds interpretive material that supports specific theological positions within the signs-and-wonders movement. The extensive textual additions, theological alterations, and supernatural claims about the translation process place it outside the bounds of scholarly translation work. For churches, content creators, and individuals seeking biblical accuracy, established translations like the ESV, NIV, or NASB provide more reliable access to the original biblical text. The TPT should be approached, if at all, as an interpretive work rather than a faithful translation of Scripture. --- ## Full Transcript [00:00] So, um, thank you guys so much for
[00:01] joining me. Um, I'm Pastor Mike Winger.
[00:03] This is going to be, um, a, um,
[00:06] hopefully dispassionate analysis of the
[00:09] Passion translation. I'm going to try to
[00:11] be as, as calm as I can on this issue. I
[00:13] think this is actually a really, really
[00:14] big deal and that we cannot um, take it
[00:19] as just another translation of the
[00:20] Bible. Whereas I could take take say the
[00:23] the the King James, the New King James,
[00:25] the NIV, ESV, NASB, the the Christian
[00:28] Standard, the I could take all these and
[00:30] just say, "Hey, I got a bunch of
[00:31] different translations of the Bible to
[00:32] compare and contrast and to learn." And
[00:35] that's great for people who don't speak
[00:36] original languages because we're able to
[00:39] say, "Oh, look, look at how different
[00:41] translator translated this thing." But
[00:43] the Passion Translation is a whole
[00:45] different animal. So, you're about to
[00:47] get the full download on the Passion
[00:49] Translation. Um, is it good? Is it
[00:51] accurate? Is it safe? Um, who did it?
[00:53] Would I recommend it? And I'm not um I'm
[00:56] not going to be blowing things out of
[00:57] proportion in order to get views here,
[01:00] but I'll say this in all honesty, this
[01:02] translation has serious, very serious
[01:05] problems. Um, and I'm going to
[01:07] demonstrate that to you today. And I'd
[01:09] like to talk about the specific verses
[01:11] and how they're translated. I'm also
[01:12] going to talk about the the author or
[01:15] the translator. Normally, I will not
[01:17] even bring up the translator of a
[01:20] translation because who cares if the guy
[01:22] like on in all honesty, like who cares
[01:24] if the guy kicked his dog or or if he's,
[01:26] you know, something's wrong with him on
[01:28] some personal level if we're evaluating
[01:30] his translation. He's just translating
[01:32] from one language to another. Um,
[01:34] normally I would just ignore issues
[01:36] related to him, but this is a different
[01:38] situation altogether. So, here's a quick
[01:40] video so you can know what I mean when I
[01:42] say a different situation. And uh this
[01:44] is Brian Simmons, the translator,
[01:46] speaking of how he um got supernatural
[01:49] empowerment to make this translation,
[01:51] special visions and secrets that were
[01:53] going to be revealed in the Passion
[01:54] translation of the Bible.
[01:56] Also in 2009,
[01:59] Jesus enters the room you're in and
[02:03] gives you an assignment. Tell me what
[02:04] that was.
[02:06] What a wonderful night that was. Again,
[02:09] I was in my room and the uh presence of
[02:12] the Lord became tangible, heavy, thick,
[02:15] so powerful that I I slipped out of bed
[02:18] and knelt there by my bed and the one I
[02:21] love came and uh commissioned me. He
[02:25] says, "I I'm commissioning you to do
[02:27] this translation project." And he
[02:30] breathed on me. Just blew his breath
[02:32] upon me. I'll never forget that
[02:35] experience.
[02:36] And he promised me that that he would
[02:38] give me help, that he would stand with
[02:40] me and give me secrets of the Hebrew
[02:44] language, secrets of the Bible. That
[02:47] would be for this last day's awakening.
[02:49] And uh that was the beginning of the
[02:51] Passion translation project.
[02:53] Did he tell you the name of the Bible?
[02:55] No, he didn't. He just
[02:57] So where'd you come up with the word
[02:58] passion translation? Well, uh, years
[03:02] ago, I saw an angel named Passion in our
[03:06] church meeting and, uh, the Lord spoke
[03:09] to me, not not audibly, but internally,
[03:11] and said, "That angel is with your
[03:13] ministry. It's the angel of Passion."
[03:16] Now, I am so intrigued with this this
[03:20] Bible uh that you've done, the Passion
[03:23] Translation. Me, too. Uh, and Jesus said
[03:26] he would give you secrets from the
[03:28] Hebrew language and downloads uh, as you
[03:31] were doing this. Did you see that?
[03:34] Oh my, I see that regularly as I
[03:37] translating
[03:39] the Bible and seeing the the uh,
[03:42] original text and the secrets that are
[03:44] hidden there.
[03:49] Okay,
[03:51] this is a very distracting way to start
[03:53] off the stream. Um, but a couple things
[03:56] you got to hear. This is a radio
[03:57] interview you just listened to where uh
[03:59] he I believe it was on the radio where
[04:00] he's talking with Sid Roth and he's
[04:02] asking him about how he got it.
[04:04] Basically, he's he feels he's been
[04:05] commissioned by God. He got a vision
[04:07] where God breathed on him to give him
[04:09] special empowerment to have supernatural
[04:11] revelation. In other words, not just
[04:13] skill as a translator, but revelation
[04:15] from God about new new ways of
[04:18] understanding the Bible, secrets in
[04:19] Hebrew and Greek. Um, and he he talks
[04:23] about even naming the translation after
[04:24] an angel that he saw in some other
[04:26] vision. And now this is why I bring up
[04:29] Brian Simmons. Normally I I would just
[04:30] ignore a person, an individual. I don't
[04:33] care, you know, who did the translating.
[04:34] I care how good it is. But in this case,
[04:37] because Brian says that this translation
[04:39] comes from his own like supernatural
[04:42] enablement, and he includes his visions
[04:45] in in in this thing, he names the thing
[04:47] after an angel he supposedly saw. It's
[04:49] all wrapped up in Brian Simmons. He is
[04:52] pretty much the sole translator. He got
[04:53] he got some like recommendations from
[04:56] others, but he's he's the guy who did
[04:57] the translating. And um and yeah, so
[05:00] we're going to do right now is we're
[05:01] just going to launch into a discussion
[05:04] of specific passages because I want to
[05:06] show you we'll we'll we'll come back to
[05:08] Brian's visions and some of the stuff he
[05:09] claims, even even prophecies he's making
[05:12] about the future. We'll come back to
[05:13] that a little bit later, but I want you
[05:15] to understand this is not a normal
[05:17] translation. This is this is a whole
[05:19] different kind of game that we're
[05:21] dealing with here. Um so let's look at
[05:25] the Passion Translation. U on the back
[05:27] cover of the translation itself, it says
[05:28] the following that you will, and this is
[05:30] right on the back cover, that you will
[05:31] encounter the heart of God. And it says
[05:34] about itself, the Passion translation
[05:35] Bible is a new heartle translation. I
[05:39] underlined heart level there. It's a
[05:41] heart level translation that expresses
[05:42] God's fiery heart of love to this
[05:44] generation using Hebrew, Greek, and
[05:46] Aramaic manuscripts. That's going to be
[05:48] a really big deal later, the Aramaic
[05:50] manuscripts part. Merging the emotion
[05:53] and life-changing truth of God's word.
[05:55] God longs to have his word expressed in
[05:57] every language in a way that unlocks the
[05:59] passion of his heart. This translation
[06:02] will trigger inside every reader an
[06:04] overwhelming response to the truth of
[06:06] the Bible, unfolding the deep mysteries
[06:08] of the scriptures in the love language
[06:09] of God, the language of the heart. And
[06:12] that whole idea of language of the
[06:13] heart, that will also be very important
[06:15] as I explain to you what's unique about
[06:17] this passion translation when we come to
[06:19] his translation methodology a little bit
[06:21] later. Um, but clearly this is this is
[06:25] not claiming to be another Bible
[06:27] translation. It's claiming to have some
[06:28] supernatural power upon it. He claims it
[06:30] came from supernatural power in his own
[06:32] life and an anointing from God. And so
[06:35] either here's our options. Either
[06:37] Brian's right and we should all like get
[06:40] just everyone should be using this
[06:42] translation. Like if these claims are
[06:44] true, then we should all be teaching
[06:45] from the Passion translation. If the
[06:47] claims are false, no one should be
[06:49] teaching from it. I think the claims are
[06:51] false. Um, and I think that we can say
[06:53] that not because I'm a cessationist
[06:54] because I'm not a cessationist. I
[06:56] believe God can speak to us. Although
[07:00] I do not in all honesty, I don't believe
[07:02] that Brian is speaking truth. And I'll
[07:05] give some examples. Now, let's look at
[07:06] the actual text itself. Here are some of
[07:10] the things uh the passages. So, I'm
[07:12] going to compare the Passion Translation
[07:14] to the ESV. Um, I've just been using the
[07:17] ESV recently. It's not the only
[07:18] translation I use, but um it's a it's a
[07:21] fairly word-forword translation and it's
[07:24] meant to be studied. And so he claims
[07:26] the same is true about the Passion
[07:28] translation. So let's let's look at
[07:29] this. Here's Psalm 19 in the ESV. It
[07:32] says, "The heavens declare the glory of
[07:34] God, and the sky above proclaims his
[07:36] handiwork. Day to day pours out speech,
[07:38] and night to night reveals knowledge.
[07:39] There's no speech, nor are their words,
[07:42] whose voice is not heard. Their voice
[07:45] goes out through all the earth and their
[07:46] words to the end of the world. In them
[07:48] he has set a tent for the sun. Okay, so
[07:51] Psalm 19 is like I love Psalm 19. It
[07:53] comes up several times in the Bible.
[07:54] It's this great passage about how God
[07:56] speaks to us through creation. Okay,
[07:58] that's Psalm 19 uh in whatever
[08:00] translation you want. It's that creation
[08:02] is declaring that God is and that he is
[08:04] glorious. And so beautiful verse. It's
[08:06] quoted later in Romans as well. Here's
[08:09] the same passage in Psalm 19, the
[08:12] Passion translation. God's splendor is a
[08:15] telltale is a tale that is told. Excuse
[08:18] me. His testament is written in the
[08:21] stars. His testament is written in the
[08:23] stars. Space itself speaks his story
[08:25] every day through the marvels of the
[08:26] heavens. His truth is on tour in the
[08:29] starry vault of the sky, showing his
[08:31] skill in creation's craftsmanship. Each
[08:33] day gushes out its message to the next,
[08:37] night with night, whispering its
[08:38] knowledge to all without a sound,
[08:40] without a word, without a voice being
[08:41] heard. And yeah, he's throwing rhymes in
[08:44] there. Um, yet all but that's not the
[08:46] real issue. Listen, here's the issue.
[08:48] Yet all the world can see its story
[08:50] everywhere its gospel is clearly read so
[08:53] all may know. The passion translation
[08:56] has it has a new interpretation of Psalm
[08:58] 19 and the interpretation is that the
[09:00] gospel itself is written in the physical
[09:03] stars in the sky. Now, some people
[09:05] believe this that the the that the
[09:07] actual ancient astrology looked up at
[09:10] the stars, saw constellations, and that
[09:11] those communicate the gospel. I know
[09:13] believers who believe it. That's fine.
[09:15] Let's just say maybe that's even true.
[09:17] That doesn't mean you're allowed to
[09:19] reinterpret the Bible and shove it into
[09:21] into Psalm 19. In the footnotes in Psalm
[09:24] 19 in the Passion Translation, he he
[09:26] confirms this. This is what he means,
[09:28] right? because he says, "Yeah, like the,
[09:30] you know, ancient gospel written in the
[09:32] stars stuff and you can read it for
[09:33] yourself." Um, but again, with that in
[09:36] mind, gospel in the stars, right? It
[09:38] says, "God's splendor is a tale that is
[09:40] told. His testament is written in the
[09:42] stars." And then verse four, everywhere
[09:46] it's gospel is clearly read so all may
[09:48] know. And no, the word gospel is not in
[09:52] the there's no word in the original that
[09:54] relates to the word gospel. But Brian
[09:56] apparently has the ability to
[10:00] bring in new words because he
[10:02] understands the secret meanings that we
[10:03] didn't understand before. And I'm not
[10:05] exaggerating. Those are going to be his
[10:06] words. I'll quote to you later on where
[10:08] he talks about how he's going to unlock
[10:10] secret meanings. And I already shared
[10:11] with you the vision he he talked about.
[10:13] So there's so many verses to cover.
[10:15] That's just Psalm 19. Here's Galatians
[10:17] 2:20.
[10:19] And this is this is one of my favorite
[10:22] memory verses actually. But I've been
[10:23] crucified with Christ. It is no longer I
[10:25] who live, but Christ who lives in me and
[10:27] the life I now live in the flesh. I live
[10:29] by faith in the son of God who loved me
[10:31] and gave himself for me. That's the ESV.
[10:34] Very similar to other translations, but
[10:36] the Passion translation says, "My old
[10:39] identity has been co-crucified with
[10:41] Messiah and no longer lives." Now,
[10:43] notice a few things, right? um I have
[10:47] been crucified with Christ is no longer
[10:49] I. It's it's here it's my old identity
[10:52] not I. He's added a concept of my old
[10:55] identity and I've been crucified with
[10:58] Christ is I've been co-crucified with
[11:00] Messiah. Now the word Messiah he'll take
[11:04] and almost it seems randomly you know
[11:06] sometimes he translate Christ as Christ
[11:08] sometimes he translateates it as Messiah
[11:10] and sometimes the passion translates it
[11:12] as the anointed one or or God's anointed
[11:14] one um and it seems random sometimes
[11:16] he'll do it in the same verse he'll
[11:17] translate the Christos the Greek word
[11:20] he'll translate it two different ways um
[11:23] why is there is there a methodology to
[11:24] it I think it's I think he thinks he's
[11:26] just being spiritledd so my old identity
[11:28] has been co-crucified with Messiah and
[11:30] no longer lives. Okay. But now the text
[11:33] has changed. It's not I no longer live.
[11:35] It's my old identity no longer lives.
[11:37] Now that may be your interpretation, but
[11:38] that's not what it says. So this would
[11:41] not be a translation. It would be an
[11:42] interpretation. For the nails of his
[11:45] cross, crucified me with him. And this
[11:48] entire phrase is completely fabricated.
[11:50] It's nowhere in Galatians 2:20. Right
[11:52] here's Galatians 2:20. I've been
[11:54] crucified with Christ. It's no longer I
[11:55] who live, but Christ lives in me. My old
[11:58] identity has been co-crucified with
[12:00] Messiah. no longer lives. Total added
[12:02] phrase. For the nails of his cross
[12:03] crucified me with him. And now the
[12:05] essence of this new life is no longer
[12:06] mine. For the anointed one, okay, he was
[12:08] Messiah. Now he's anointed one uh lives
[12:11] his life through me. We live in union as
[12:14] one. More added text. That's what the
[12:16] italics are there for is to let you know
[12:17] he added this. Um my new life is
[12:20] empowered by the faith of the son of God
[12:22] who loves me so much that he gave
[12:23] himself for me and dispenses his life
[12:25] into mine. Dispenses his life into mine.
[12:29] Where is Where is this?
[12:32] Who loved me and gave himself for me.
[12:34] Where is this dispenses his life? Why
[12:36] aren't there Why aren't there a Bryant?
[12:38] Why aren't there not italics on the
[12:40] phrase dispenses his life into mine?
[12:42] It's added. And this is another
[12:44] complaint I'll have. You think you're
[12:46] safe? Cuz because he italicizes whenever
[12:48] he's adding text, but he doesn't.
[12:50] Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't.
[12:53] That's a problem. You're not being
[12:54] you're not being consistent. And so that
[12:56] confuses or possibly leads people to
[12:59] think things that aren't true. Now,
[13:01] let's talk about some texts on
[13:02] bibliology. Um, I I I' I've got a lot of
[13:06] issues with the Passion Translation. And
[13:08] you guys know I've I I accept so many
[13:09] translations and encourage you reading
[13:11] lots of them. This is different. Okay,
[13:13] this is different. I will say that the
[13:15] Passion translation, in my opinion, is
[13:17] more sectarian than the Jehovah's
[13:19] Witness New World Translation. that is
[13:21] there's more places where he's adapting
[13:22] and changing the text than even they did
[13:24] in their version which is saying
[13:27] something. Um so bibliology is is kind
[13:29] of an important thing as Christians we
[13:32] um we have what we believe about the
[13:33] Bible and there's certain passages of
[13:35] scripture that are very important um
[13:37] when it comes to what we believe about
[13:39] the Bible like the Bible is the inspired
[13:40] word of God. When it comes to those
[13:42] passages I as I was reading through the
[13:44] passion I noticed that they're
[13:46] different. Uh so John 5:39, you search
[13:50] the scriptures because you think that in
[13:52] them you have eternal life. It is they
[13:53] that bear witness about me. Jesus
[13:55] speaking here. He tells his uh the the
[13:58] Pharisees whoever he was speaking to in
[13:59] John 5 that the Bible's really all
[14:02] speaking about him. The Old Testament is
[14:03] about Jesus. Um they search the
[14:06] scriptures for eternal life, but they'll
[14:07] find the scriptures are speaking of him.
[14:09] Okay. John 5:39 in the passion, he goes,
[14:11] "You are busy analyzing the scriptures,
[14:13] frantically pouring over them in hopes
[14:15] of gaining eternal life. Everything you
[14:17] read points to me.
[14:19] Okay, I'm fine with everything you read
[14:21] points to me. That's fine. But why? Why
[14:24] are they frantic?
[14:26] He says, "You search the scriptures,
[14:28] right? But rather than translate this,
[14:32] you search the scriptures, three words
[14:35] including the 'the', four words. Rather
[14:38] than translating it that he goes, you
[14:39] are busy analyzing the scriptures,
[14:43] frantically pouring over them. Now, why
[14:44] is this there? because in the circles in
[14:47] which Brian runs, it's nice to take pot
[14:50] shots at people who care too much about
[14:52] theology. I'll just be honest with you.
[14:54] Um, and so here becomes now a text where
[14:57] Jesus is talking about how he's the
[14:59] fulfillment of scripture that now it can
[15:01] be used as a text for knocking people
[15:03] because they're so concerned about the
[15:05] Bible.
[15:07] I hope you see the disconnect. Um 2
[15:10] Timothy 3:16, beautiful, beautiful,
[15:13] important passage about um what we
[15:15] believe about the Bible. It says, "All
[15:16] scriptures breathed out by God and
[15:18] profitable for teaching, for reproof,
[15:20] for correction, and for training in
[15:21] righteousness, that the man of God may
[15:23] be complete, equipped for every good
[15:25] work."
[15:27] This word breathed out by God, theonas,
[15:30] it's it's the idea that God inspired the
[15:32] scriptures. This is a very important
[15:34] word. Lots of ink has been spilled
[15:36] talking about what this word means. It's
[15:38] the inspiration of the scriptures. This
[15:40] verse is like one of the chief verses we
[15:42] use to say that the Bible's inspired of
[15:44] God. It's one of the biggest ones. Now,
[15:47] what does he say about it? 2 Timothy
[15:50] 3:16 in the Passion translation. Every
[15:52] scripture has been written by the Holy
[15:54] Spirit, the breath of God. Now, pause
[15:56] for a second.
[15:59] Let's He's going to tell us later. I'll
[16:01] put it on the screen if I can remember.
[16:02] uh that we can take the passion
[16:04] translation and have deep study with
[16:05] this text because it's so faithful to
[16:07] the original. What it says here is every
[16:09] scripture has been written by the Holy
[16:11] Spirit, the breath of God. Now he takes
[16:14] that word theontoas all scripture is God
[16:17] breathed, right? He takes that and he
[16:20] turns it into um has been written by the
[16:22] Holy Spirit, the breath of God. He's way
[16:25] expanded on the meaning way beyond. But
[16:27] here's the problem I have. There is
[16:29] something called the dictation theory
[16:31] where we believe that the Holy Spirit
[16:32] told them literally word for word what
[16:34] to write in the scriptures. Um that
[16:36] would be the idea that it's all been
[16:38] written by the Holy Spirit. This is like
[16:40] a wrong biblology. This is not what we
[16:43] believe about the text. We believe the
[16:44] writers were inspired right so that the
[16:46] writings are then inspired. But we're
[16:48] not saying that like every word was
[16:51] dictated by God. That's actually like a
[16:54] a Muslim belief about the Quran that
[16:56] every word was dictated. But rather we
[16:58] believe there was right theas. It was
[17:01] God inspiring by his holy spirit these
[17:04] things. So this is a problem like
[17:06] every yeah okay we'll move forward. Um
[17:09] it will empower you by its instruction
[17:10] and correction giving you the strength
[17:12] to take the right direction and leading
[17:13] you deeper into the path of godliness.
[17:15] Hey does that preach well? That preaches
[17:16] super well. Does it capture the meaning
[17:18] of the original? No. Um I've taught this
[17:22] passage many times and anybody who has
[17:23] goes, "Yeah, no. No. there's there's
[17:25] specific things it's trying to
[17:26] communicate and you just stripped it of
[17:28] half of that meaning and changed part of
[17:29] it.
[17:31] Um, and then at verse 17, he says, "Then
[17:33] you will be God's servant, fully mature
[17:34] and perfectly prepared to fulfill any
[17:36] assignment God gives you." I'll come in
[17:40] a minute to all of these passages where
[17:42] Brian adds terminology that's part of
[17:44] his like hyper focused miracle focused
[17:48] group where they're all about miracles,
[17:50] signs, and wonders. And and I'm not
[17:52] opposed to those things, right? But I'm
[17:53] definitely opposed to the way some
[17:55] people do it. Um and uh and I think it's
[17:58] not safe, healthy, wise, or true. Um but
[18:03] but there's terminology in that in that
[18:04] circle and this assignment God gives
[18:06] you, fulfill the assignment God gives
[18:08] you, he adds that phrase from their
[18:09] terminology book, instead of equipped
[18:12] for every good work, that's it. Like
[18:14] you're a man of God, you'll be equipped
[18:16] for every good work, but there's no
[18:17] assignment and there's no that God gave
[18:19] you. It's just good works that you're
[18:20] equipped for. Okay?
[18:23] Um, Proverbs 30:es 5 and 6, it says,
[18:26] "Every word of God proves true. He's a
[18:28] shield to those who take refuge in him."
[18:30] And in the Passion translation, it says,
[18:32] "Every promise from the faithful God is
[18:35] pure and proves to be true. He is a
[18:37] wraparound shield of protection for all
[18:39] his lovers who run to hide in him."
[18:44] Do you just notice the size difference
[18:46] between those two verses?
[18:49] Brian will add a lot a lot to the Bible.
[18:52] It's like the Amplified Bible in the
[18:54] sense that it just it's like one verse
[18:55] becomes a paragraph.
[18:57] Every word of God proves true becomes
[18:59] not every word of God, but every promise
[19:01] from the faithful God.
[19:04] Every promise. Okay. So, not every word
[19:06] of God, now I'm talking about scripture,
[19:08] but every promise from God. Okay. Well,
[19:10] now I'm talking about promises from God,
[19:12] which could be just certain parts of the
[19:14] Bible or perhaps personal revelations
[19:17] and things that have happened to me in
[19:19] my own heart and life. Um, do you see
[19:22] how the bibl is different in this book?
[19:24] That's one of the things I noticed
[19:25] consistently. Let's look at another
[19:26] example of where the bibl is different
[19:28] in the passion. Uh, Psalm 1:es 1 and 2.
[19:32] Blessed is the man who walks not in the
[19:33] counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the
[19:34] way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of
[19:36] scoffers, but his delight is in the law
[19:39] of the Lord, and on his law he meditates
[19:43] day and night. That's the Torah of God,
[19:45] the law of God. The Passion translation
[19:48] doesn't say that they delight in God's
[19:49] law or or God's word. It says, "What
[19:52] delight comes to those who follow God's
[19:54] ways. They won't step in with walk in
[19:56] step with the wicked, nor share the
[19:58] sinner's way, nor be found sitting in
[20:00] the scorner seat. Their pleasure and
[20:02] passion is remaining true to the word of
[20:04] I am. Well, what's the word of I am? Is
[20:07] that the identity of God? Or is that
[20:11] Jesus?
[20:12] What What am I I'm meditating day and
[20:15] night in his true revelation of light?
[20:18] I'm not meditating day and night in the
[20:20] Torah, in the Old Testament law in Psalm
[20:23] 1, as it really says. Instead, I'm
[20:25] meditating in God's true revelation of
[20:26] light, which seems to be, I guess, Jesus
[20:29] or maybe something more nebulous than
[20:30] that.
[20:32] Do you see there's a consistent idea
[20:34] here where we're not allowing the Bible
[20:37] to give us clear bibliology that keeps
[20:39] us sort of anchored in the scriptures to
[20:41] let the Bible be the Bible and be the
[20:43] authority of God revealed to mankind
[20:46] about what to believe and how to live.
[20:48] It's moving away from that and it's
[20:50] consistent. It's not I I don't think
[20:52] it's oops because I think it happens
[20:54] consistently. In Psalm 53 he says, "Oh
[20:57] Lord, in the morning you hear my voice.
[20:59] In the morning I prepare a sacrifice for
[21:01] you and watch. But but look at look at
[21:03] how this is not bibliology here but look
[21:06] at how he um adds to the text here.
[21:08] Passion translation says at each and
[21:11] every sunrise you will hear my voice as
[21:13] I prepare my sacrifice of prayer to you.
[21:15] Every morning I lay out the pieces of my
[21:17] life on the altar and wait for your fire
[21:19] to fall upon my heart.
[21:22] There are italics here but there aren't
[21:24] enough. Okay, this is not
[21:27] this is just adding lots of stuff and
[21:29] part of it's preach, you know, preaching
[21:31] points as though a pastor can grab the
[21:33] Passion translation and go, "Oo, look,
[21:35] I've got more preaching points now."
[21:37] This will make it easier to sermonize
[21:39] this this passage of scripture, which um
[21:42] I think is a that's not what the Bible's
[21:44] for. The Bible's not there for you to
[21:45] sermonize it. Um, and sometimes as a
[21:47] pastor who teaches, sometimes we're
[21:49] tempted to try to make something fit
[21:52] into the a little box called sermon and
[21:54] it doesn't fit in the box. And my
[21:55] thought is just teach it as it is. I
[21:57] don't have the right to change what the
[21:58] scripture says
[22:00] in John 1:es 1 and two. This is just,
[22:04] you know, this is a very important
[22:05] scripture about the about who Jesus is.
[22:08] In the beginning was the word and the
[22:09] word was with God and the word was God.
[22:11] He was in the beginning with God. And
[22:12] these words are all chosen very
[22:14] carefully by John and by the Holy
[22:15] Spirit. The the the way this is written
[22:17] is intentional. God wants it this way,
[22:20] right? He says, "In the very beginning,
[22:23] now it's the very beginning." Because
[22:24] it's a passionate translation, so it has
[22:26] more, you know, adjectives. In the very
[22:28] beginning, the living expression was
[22:30] already there. That's in the text. In
[22:34] the Greek, it just says was the word. In
[22:35] the beginning, was the word just he was
[22:39] he existed. But it's the living
[22:41] expression, not the word. The living
[22:42] expression was already there. It's the
[22:43] word logos in Greek. Translating it
[22:46] living expression is not a translation.
[22:48] It's a theological interpretation added
[22:50] into the text. And the living expression
[22:52] was with God yet fully God. They were
[22:55] together face to face in the very
[22:57] beginning. Now it's face to face. Um
[23:00] there's problems here for those who are
[23:03] trying to very carefully do something
[23:04] called christologology, understanding
[23:06] who Jesus is. um the phrase fully God
[23:10] the the phrase face to face um
[23:14] in the very beginning um
[23:17] it's anyways I'll move on let's talk
[23:19] about terminology um there's a question
[23:23] in
[23:25] in the in the fact on the passion
[23:27] translation website in the FAQ there's a
[23:29] question about it whether it's
[23:30] denominational or sectarian that's the
[23:33] question and um I thought I had it on
[23:36] the screen I think I might be able to
[23:37] bring it up later. H I don't see it
[23:40] there though. So the question is, is it
[23:42] denominational? And he and he's on the
[23:44] website, it's very clear. No, we're not
[23:46] denominational. This is not about any
[23:47] particular Christian group. Like we're
[23:49] just trying to, you know, make the word
[23:51] of God available to all people. But I
[23:54] found in studying this translation that
[23:56] there's all sorts of terminological
[23:58] additions. What I mean by this is this.
[24:01] Um, let me get big for a minute.
[24:04] inside of the signs and wonders I
[24:06] shouldn't just call it that inside of
[24:09] the particular signs and wonders
[24:11] movement that Brian is a part of um
[24:13] which does include uh groups like Bethl
[24:16] and um and and it's a loose it's a loose
[24:19] association this group it's very loose
[24:20] so I don't call them some people call
[24:22] them the NR the new apostolic
[24:24] reformation I don't use that terminology
[24:26] because they don't use that terminology
[24:27] and I get that it's convenient because
[24:29] you can go up they're in AR and so are
[24:31] they and convenient or not I don't know
[24:33] that it's accurate But are they part of
[24:34] an apostolic movement? Yes. Do I I have
[24:38] more on that in my uh I have video on
[24:40] Bethl that I did a while back and hope
[24:42] it was gracious is meant to be kind and
[24:44] loving but to show some errors that are
[24:46] there um and some problems. Well, he's
[24:50] part of this movement and in that
[24:51] movement, they have tons of terminology
[24:53] like the word release um and and uh and
[24:56] glory and all of these words that take
[24:59] on extra meaning, but they're not really
[25:02] found in that sense in the Bible. The
[25:04] thing that Passion translation does that
[25:06] I think other reviewers don't notice is
[25:10] this Passion translation adds terms to
[25:12] the Bible so that it will make the Bible
[25:14] look like it's more like this sort of
[25:17] offshoot movement of Christianity. It'll
[25:20] make it, you know, you can have all your
[25:21] phrasiologies release and loose and I
[25:24] prophesy over you the the miraculous
[25:27] power of God, the miracle working
[25:29] dynamite power of God. like these
[25:30] phrases that they use a lot, they find
[25:33] their way into the text of the Bible to
[25:34] validate the movement. It's an
[25:36] incredibly sectarian translation. Let me
[25:39] give you examples now of what I mean.
[25:42] Romans 12:6, it says, "Having then gifts
[25:45] that differ according to the grace given
[25:47] to us, let us use them if prophec
[25:49] prophecy in proportion to our faith."
[25:51] Now, I have I have a teaching on Romans
[25:52] 12, and I try to teach it just as it is,
[25:54] verse by verse, and I encourage prophecy
[25:56] even in it. But in Romans 12:6 in the
[25:58] Passion translation, it says, "God's
[26:01] marvelous grace imparts," that word
[26:03] impart is something that's a, you know,
[26:05] a phrase in that group, "Imparts to each
[26:08] one of us, um, each one of us varying
[26:12] gifts and ministries that are uniquely
[26:14] ours."
[26:16] Look at all the additions that are here.
[26:17] So if God has given to you the grace
[26:19] gift of prophecy, you must activate your
[26:24] gift by using the proportion of faith
[26:27] that you have to prophesy. Activating
[26:30] your gift. That's another terminological
[26:32] addition. Let me show you more. John
[26:35] 16:7. Nevertheless, I tell you the
[26:38] truth. It is to your advantage that I go
[26:39] away. For if I do not go away, the
[26:41] helper will not come to you. But if I
[26:42] go, I will send him to you. Here's the
[26:44] Passion's version of John 16:7. But
[26:47] here's the truth. It's to your advantage
[26:49] that I go away. For if I do not go away,
[26:51] the divine encourager will not be
[26:54] released to you. But after I depart, I
[26:57] will send him to you. In this movement,
[27:00] there's a lot of releasing of things. I
[27:02] release the Holy Spirit. I release a
[27:04] flood of God's grace upon you. I release
[27:06] God's forgiveness. I release healing for
[27:08] your sin. That word release is super
[27:10] important. I wish I had a digital
[27:12] version of the passion so I could just
[27:13] take the terminology of the group and
[27:15] just look up release and see all the
[27:17] texts that come up um where he adds the
[27:19] term. Um so there's it's very sectarian.
[27:22] Well, I'll give you more examples. 1
[27:23] Corinthians 14:30, if a revelation is
[27:26] made to another sitting there, let the
[27:27] first be silent. This is about um how
[27:31] prophecy is to be handled and in the
[27:33] church. And he it gives rules about
[27:35] prophecy in 1 Corinthians 14. Well, 1
[27:38] Corinthians 14:30, the passion says,
[27:40] "But if someone receives a revelation
[27:41] while someone is else is still speaking,
[27:43] the one who speaks who's speaking should
[27:45] conclude and allow the one with fresh
[27:48] revelation an opportunity to share it."
[27:51] That is a terminological phrase. Now,
[27:53] here's what like a scholar evaluating
[27:55] the Passion translation would probably
[27:57] never notice this, but having been
[28:00] exposed somewhat to this sort of circle,
[28:02] um, not not in my own church, but in
[28:05] other churches that I've I' visited and
[28:08] people I've known, um, I realize fresh
[28:11] revelation is a key phrase. See, now it
[28:14] validates the sort of weird version of
[28:17] Christianity that's coming out of some
[28:19] of these groups. Fresh revelation. Yeah,
[28:21] there it is. It's right there in the
[28:22] text now. instead of just in our group.
[28:24] Colossians 1:21, "And you who once were
[28:27] alienated and hostile in mind, doing
[28:29] evil deeds, he is now reconciled in his
[28:31] body of uh body of flesh by his death in
[28:34] order to present you holy and blameless
[28:35] and above reproach before him." Um, you
[28:38] know, I'm going to forget if I don't do
[28:40] this now, so let me pause for a second.
[28:41] Two things to tell you. Um, hi. If you
[28:43] have comments and you're watching live,
[28:45] put them in the comments section and my
[28:47] friend AJ is gonna going to gather those
[28:49] comments and I'll try to answer them at
[28:50] the end of the stream as time allows. I
[28:52] can't guarantee it, but I'll do what I
[28:54] can. Um, also, I'm doing a giveaway
[28:57] today. Speaking of like wanting to know
[28:59] the word of God better, I'm giving away
[29:01] a a uh free copy of Accordance, which is
[29:03] a Bible software, a very good Bible
[29:06] software with lots of different
[29:07] resources, including uh ancient language
[29:09] resources, Greek and Hebrew, stuff like
[29:11] that. So, what I'm going to do is I'm
[29:12] going to ask a question at the very end
[29:14] of the stream and then I'll watch the
[29:16] comments and whoever can answer that
[29:18] question. Um, they will they will win
[29:21] the accordance software. So, you have to
[29:23] hang in for the very end to be able to
[29:25] catch that. Um, and that's when I'll be
[29:27] able to watch the comments. So, that's
[29:28] just kind of throw that out there. That
[29:30] was donated uh by a friend of mine, Ryan
[29:32] Tanner, who just wanted to bless
[29:33] somebody out there. So, uh Colossians 1
[29:35] again 21 and 22 in the ESV. and you who
[29:39] once were alienated and hostile in mind
[29:40] doing evil deeds, he's now reconciled in
[29:42] his body of flesh by his death in order
[29:44] to present you holy and blameless and
[29:45] above approach before him. In the
[29:48] Passion translation, it says, "Even
[29:49] though you were once distant from him,
[29:52] living in the shadows of your evil
[29:53] thoughts and actions, he reconnected you
[29:56] back to himself."
[29:58] Reconnected you back to himself. That's
[30:00] interesting concept. He released his
[30:03] supernatural peace to you. Total
[30:06] terminological addition. God's I'm
[30:08] releasing God's supernatural peace upon
[30:10] you and now I have scripture to support
[30:11] it. Thank you, Passion Translation.
[30:14] Through the sacrifices of his own body
[30:15] as the sin payment on your behalf. Um
[30:18] anyway, there's more. It's just a bunch
[30:20] of additions that are happening there.
[30:22] Hebrews 11:35,
[30:24] women receive back their dead by
[30:26] resurrection. This is about the Hall of
[30:27] Faith passage. I'm actually in the
[30:28] middle of teaching this right now. Um so
[30:30] it'll it was uploaded yesterday and the
[30:32] next part will be uploaded next Monday.
[30:34] uh some were tortured refusing to accept
[30:36] release so that they might rise again to
[30:38] a better life. So the women had received
[30:39] people back from uh from the dead by
[30:42] resurrection. The passion says
[30:45] faithfilled women saw their dead
[30:46] children raised in resurrection power.
[30:50] Why does it say power? Because the
[30:52] phrase resurrection power is an is a
[30:55] phrase that happens in these circles in
[30:57] their preaching. The thing that first
[31:00] bothered me about The Passion when I had
[31:02] only read just a tiny bit of it was that
[31:04] I was noticing all these terminological
[31:06] additions and they are very consistent.
[31:09] I have not even read the whole thing. I
[31:10] have not gone through all of it, but
[31:12] it's very consistent. It's a way of
[31:14] legitimizing a distortion
[31:19] of spirituality.
[31:21] I don't know how else to put it. I'm not
[31:23] attacking those people. I'm not mad at
[31:24] those people. I don't hate those people.
[31:26] I think that this is just the fact of
[31:27] the matter. And this is why I I'm really
[31:29] concerned about this translation. 1
[31:31] Corinthians 14:22, "Thus tongues are a
[31:35] sign not for believers, but for
[31:36] unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign
[31:38] not for unbelievers, but for believers."
[31:40] Pretty simple about the function of
[31:42] tongues and prophecy.
[31:45] The passion says, "So then, tongues are
[31:46] not a sign for believers, but a miracle
[31:48] for unbelievers." They're a miracle for
[31:50] unbelievers. Prophecy, on the other
[31:52] hand, is not for unbelievers, but a
[31:53] miracle sign for believers. So now I've
[31:57] got miracle sign and that fits their
[32:00] terminology. Um that's all I'm saying is
[32:03] you're changing the Bible to fit your
[32:05] sect. That's what that is. 1 Corinthians
[32:08] 14:25, the secrets of his heart are
[32:10] disclosed and so falling on his face, he
[32:12] will worship God and declare that God is
[32:14] really among you. This is what happens
[32:15] when um an unbeliever enters in
[32:18] according to the context. an unbeliever
[32:19] enters into the body um to visit for a
[32:22] service and people prophesy and then
[32:24] right they prophesy and what happens as
[32:26] he hears them telling him about himself
[32:30] right the secrets of his heart are
[32:32] disclosed they find out what's really
[32:34] going on in his heart so falling on his
[32:35] face he will worship God and declare
[32:36] that God is really among you
[32:39] um for the intimate secrets of his heart
[32:41] will be brought to light he will be
[32:43] mystified
[32:44] that's their translation and fall fall
[32:46] face down in worship and say God is
[32:48] truly among Now he's he's mystified. The
[32:51] I think the context actually of 1
[32:53] Corinthians 14 is that he's actually
[32:55] falling on his face um in a sense of
[32:58] repentance and in a sense of finding out
[33:00] something's wrong with his life. But in
[33:02] these circles, you don't prophesy
[33:04] anything negative. You never say
[33:05] anything negative. It's like a it's like
[33:07] an artificial rule like don't prophesy
[33:09] negative stuff, even though that happens
[33:11] in the Bible a lot. Um and so to make
[33:13] sure that it's not negative, right,
[33:16] he'll be mystified now. And so, uh, I'll
[33:19] move on.
[33:20] Um, oh, for the sake of time, I just
[33:23] cannot get into all of these.
[33:26] All right. Matthew, uh, the Lord's
[33:28] Prayer. Um, Matthew chapter 6:9. Pray
[33:31] then like this. Our father in heaven,
[33:34] hallowed be your name. Okay, this is
[33:36] going to be just three verses.
[33:38] Listen to it. You know this prayer. And
[33:40] then we'll hear it in the Passion
[33:41] Translation. Your kingdom come, your
[33:43] will be done on earth as it is in
[33:45] heaven. Give us this day our daily bread
[33:47] and forgive us our debts as we also have
[33:49] forgiven our debtors.
[33:51] The Passion says, "Pray like this. Our
[33:53] Father, dwelling in the heavenly
[33:55] realms." Now, we got the word realm
[33:57] thrown in there and the word realm is
[33:58] thrown in several places because they
[34:00] like to talk about realms as part of the
[34:02] um sort of spiritual views they have in
[34:05] this group.
[34:07] May the glory of your name be the center
[34:09] on which our lives turn. What?
[34:13] Why are there no italics here?
[34:15] the center on which our lives turn.
[34:18] Hallowed be your name. No, no, no. It's
[34:20] not just hallowed be your name. May the
[34:21] glory of your name be the center on
[34:22] which our lives turn. That's not a
[34:25] translation. That's not a paraphrase.
[34:27] That's addition.
[34:30] Manifest your kingdom realm. There's
[34:32] there is again. And cause your every
[34:33] purpose to be fulfilled on earth just as
[34:35] it is fulfilled in heaven. Manifest your
[34:38] kingdom realm. God's in a heavenly
[34:39] realm. Manifest your kingdom realm. This
[34:41] is this is all terminology that watch my
[34:43] Bill Johnson video if you want to get
[34:44] more on that. Um, we acknowledge you as
[34:47] our provider of all we need each day.
[34:49] Forgive us the wrongs we have done as we
[34:51] ourselves release forgiveness to those
[34:53] who have wronged us. There it is again.
[34:55] More termin terminological additions.
[34:57] Release forgiveness. We don't just
[34:58] forgive people. We release forgiveness
[34:59] to them. That's different, isn't it? It
[35:02] is different and it's not what the text
[35:04] says.
[35:06] Matthew 9:29. Then he touched their eyes
[35:08] saying, "According to your faith, be it
[35:10] done to you." But but look at how he
[35:11] slightly changes it. Then Jesus put his
[35:14] hands over their eyes and said, "You
[35:16] will have what your faith expects."
[35:18] That's just a preaching point for the um
[35:21] the faith healing movement. You will
[35:23] have what your faith expects.
[35:26] Just slightly change it because then it
[35:28] makes it a lot better for our preaching.
[35:30] Galatians 1:3, grace to you and peace
[35:33] from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
[35:35] Christ. Galatians 13. in the passion. I
[35:37] pray over you a release of the blessings
[35:40] of God's undeserved kindness and total
[35:42] well-being. Total well-being. Where's
[35:44] total well-being? Grace and peace to
[35:47] them. Total well-being because it's part
[35:49] of a prosperity, you know, pillar that
[35:52] they have in that movement as well. But
[35:54] praying over you, a release of the
[35:55] blessings of God.
[35:59] It goes on Ephesians 4:29, "Let no
[36:02] corrupting talk come out of your mouths,
[36:03] but only such as is good for building
[36:05] up, as fits the occasion, that it may
[36:07] give grace to those who hear, and do not
[36:09] grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom
[36:11] you were sealed for the day of
[36:12] redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath,
[36:14] and anger, and clamor and slander be put
[36:16] away from you, along with all malice."
[36:18] Okay, the reason why I read three verses
[36:20] instead of just the one we're going to
[36:21] focus on, the context is you would
[36:24] grieve the spirit if you weren't doing
[36:25] what's in verse 29 and 31, right?
[36:27] Grieving the spirit in this case would
[36:29] be corrupting talk. It would be hurting
[36:31] other believers around you, dividing
[36:33] from them, being bitter, wrathful,
[36:34] anger, clamorous, slanderous. Because
[36:37] that would grieve the Holy Spirit. But
[36:39] not in the Passion translation, verse 30
[36:42] in particular, it says, "The Holy Spirit
[36:44] of God has sealed you in Christ Jesus
[36:46] until you experience your full
[36:48] salvation." So never grieve the spirit
[36:50] of God or take for granted his holy
[36:52] influence in your life.
[36:55] In Brian's view, grieving the spirit
[36:58] means that you are not being influenced
[37:00] by the Holy Spirit enough. And by that,
[37:02] they ultimately mean signs, wonders,
[37:04] miracles, prophecy, healings, tongues.
[37:06] It's all signs and wonders. So, this
[37:09] verse has a different meaning in their
[37:11] particular group. And what he's done is
[37:13] he's changed the meaning of the text.
[37:15] This is verse 30 in Brian's translation,
[37:18] right?
[37:20] This is verse 30 in a normal
[37:24] translation. Look at how much added
[37:26] content there is. Does that not concern
[37:29] you? And it adds content that literally
[37:32] gives a wrong interpretation of the
[37:34] passage. Now, I agree. I don't want to
[37:36] stop the Holy Spirit from working in my
[37:38] life. But don't try to make this passage
[37:41] say something it doesn't say. Grieving
[37:43] the Holy Spirit here is breaking the
[37:45] unity that God has created with other
[37:47] Christians. It's division. It's it's
[37:50] sinful attitudes and actions towards
[37:52] other other believers in Christ. That
[37:53] that would be grieving the Holy Spirit.
[37:56] Luke 12 11 and 12 it says, "And when
[37:59] they bring you before the synagogues and
[38:00] rulers and the authorities, do not be
[38:02] anxious about how you should defend
[38:03] yourself or what you should say, for the
[38:05] Holy Spirit will teach you in that very
[38:07] hour what you ought to say." Now, just
[38:09] being t God uh Jesus is predicting uh
[38:11] persecution and he's like, "Don't worry
[38:13] about what you'll say. Like God's going
[38:15] to tell you what to say at the time."
[38:16] Here's the passion translation. And
[38:18] remember this, when people accuse you
[38:20] before everyone and forcefully drag you
[38:22] before the religious leaders and
[38:23] authorities, do not be troubled. Don't
[38:26] worry about defending yourself or be
[38:28] concerned about how to answer their
[38:29] accusations. Simply be confident and
[38:32] allow the spirit of wisdom access to
[38:34] your heart.
[38:37] What?
[38:40] Where? Where does Okay. Nowhere in the
[38:44] Greek does it say allow the spirit of
[38:46] wisdom access to your heart. This is a
[38:49] preaching point from the signs and
[38:51] wonders movement. You're not moving
[38:52] enough in the spirit because you're not
[38:54] open enough to it because you have to
[38:55] somehow in some way that's hard to
[38:57] explain open your heart to allow the
[38:59] Holy Spirit. And I mean I I say this as
[39:02] someone who's like I'm like in my video
[39:04] on prophecy I'm like telling you pray
[39:05] for prophecies, seek for the gifts of
[39:07] the spirit. Don't don't ignore the fact
[39:08] that God is you know I'm not a
[39:10] cessationist, right? But these guys make
[39:12] me sound like a cessationist because
[39:16] they go off the tracks. They go off the
[39:17] rails. And the rails are scripture. So
[39:19] the So the scripture brings us back when
[39:22] I I remember when I had years ago when I
[39:23] was a kid, I went to a very um what some
[39:27] might call a hyperarismic church. And I
[39:29] didn't know right or wrong of it. I just
[39:30] thought if that's what God has, I want
[39:32] it to. And I never really experienced
[39:33] it, but I was there and I got to see it.
[39:35] And I was kind of bummed out like I
[39:37] didn't get what they all got.
[39:40] years later, I went to a Calvary chapel
[39:41] and they were going through 1
[39:42] Corinthians 14 and they were teaching
[39:44] the passage. And I I remember it blew me
[39:46] away. I thought, "Hey, there's rules.
[39:48] Hey, wait. There's rules about how this
[39:50] is supposed to happen." And I thought
[39:51] first thought was, "I got to go back to
[39:52] that church and tell them about 1
[39:54] Corinthians 14." And I was just I was so
[39:56] naive, right? I was I was uh just
[39:58] unaware. And I then it hit me, hey,
[40:00] wait, they've got pastors. They got
[40:02] Bibles in the in the church. They're
[40:04] just ignoring this stuff. And the thing
[40:06] that brought me back to a grounded view
[40:09] of spiritual gifts is the scripture. The
[40:11] scripture brought me back. This is why I
[40:13] don't like the passion translation. What
[40:15] could bring you back won't bring you
[40:17] back because he's changing it.
[40:20] Matthew 4:4, but he answered, "It is
[40:23] written, man shall not live by bread
[40:25] alone, but by every word that comes from
[40:26] the mouth of God." Listen to how he
[40:29] changes this text.
[40:31] Jesus responding to Satan here while
[40:34] being tempted in the passion. It says
[40:36] the scripture says bread alone will not
[40:38] satisfy but true life is found in every
[40:40] word which every word which constantly
[40:43] goes forth from God's mouth.
[40:47] I don't even have to speculate on why he
[40:51] says this because I saw in one of his
[40:52] videos and I'm sorry if I didn't I
[40:54] didn't uh catch it. I didn't have time
[40:56] to grab it, but but he says that this
[40:58] Matthew 4:4 passage, the reason he
[41:01] translated it this way is because he
[41:02] wants people to know that it's not just
[41:03] about reading the Bible. It's about what
[41:04] God is saying today. So, he takes
[41:07] Jesus's words that are about the
[41:09] scriptures and he makes them about
[41:11] things that him and his group are saying
[41:13] today.
[41:15] Do not read the Passion translation. It
[41:17] will muddy your brain. It will confuse
[41:20] you and you won't be able to think
[41:22] clearly about these issues. It's not
[41:24] it's not just a poor translation. It's a
[41:27] translation that's sectarian and
[41:29] purposely meant to change theology so
[41:31] that it will fit their particular group.
[41:33] But but they're not interested in
[41:34] changing the identity of Jesus or even
[41:36] the nature of the gospel. The changes
[41:38] are meant to be towards signs, wonders,
[41:40] and miracles. As far as I can tell, I
[41:42] maybe there's something wrong with the
[41:43] deity of Christ in there. I don't know.
[41:45] Um so I'm not saying it's perfect. I
[41:46] haven't read every passage. In 2 Peter
[41:49] 1:19, it says this, and we have the
[41:52] prophetic word more fully confirmed.
[41:54] This is a passage along the same lines
[41:55] as the last one. He changed it on
[41:57] purpose for the same reason. Um, he
[42:00] wants to
[42:02] elevate modern-day revelation is the
[42:04] idea. Um, we have the prophetic word
[42:06] more fully confirmed to which you do
[42:08] well to pay attention as to a lamp
[42:09] shining in a dark place until the day
[42:11] dawn and the morning star rises in your
[42:12] hearts. Knowing this first of all that
[42:14] no prophecy of scripture comes from
[42:16] someone's own interpretation,
[42:18] the Passion translation. And so we've
[42:20] been given the prophetic word, the
[42:22] written message of the prophets, made
[42:25] more reliable and fully validated by the
[42:28] confirming voice of God on the Mount of
[42:30] Transfiguration.
[42:32] Hit the brakes.
[42:34] Now, I get why he's suggesting that this
[42:36] is related to the Mount of
[42:37] Transfiguration. That's not a bad
[42:39] interpretation to see the relation. But
[42:41] how he adds to the text is bad and it
[42:44] changes the meaning. He goes, look, we
[42:46] have the written word, but because of
[42:48] the mount of transfiguration and what
[42:50] God said, this is my son in whom I'm
[42:51] well pleased. Hear him. Because of that
[42:53] event, now the old written word is more
[42:57] reliable and fully validated.
[42:59] The message of the prophets, that old
[43:02] text is now better. What? That doesn't
[43:07] What if there's a new mount of
[43:08] transfiguration? What if there's a new
[43:10] moment where God speaks and we can make
[43:11] the old the New Testament maybe even
[43:13] better and more validated?
[43:16] Yeah. And you will continue to do well
[43:17] if you stay focused on it. For this
[43:19] prophetic message is like a piercing
[43:22] this prophetic message is like a
[43:23] piercing light shining in a gloomy place
[43:25] until the dawning of a new day when the
[43:26] morning star rises in your hearts. You
[43:28] must understand this at the outset.
[43:30] interpretation of scriptural prophecy
[43:33] requires the Holy Spirit, for it does
[43:36] not originate from someone's own
[43:37] imagination. Well, apparently it does
[43:40] because you're able to just add to the
[43:42] text phrases like requires the Holy
[43:44] Spirit.
[43:47] So, here's what you need to know about
[43:49] this. Now, now I feel like I'm talking
[43:50] about this apos apostolic signs and
[43:54] wonders movement. They don't throw out
[43:57] the Bible. What they do is they say that
[44:00] people who don't agree with them,
[44:02] generally speaking, they have only the
[44:03] Bible, but they're lacking the Holy
[44:05] Spirit. So, they're like, "No, we
[44:06] believe the Bible, but it's it's gets
[44:08] better. The Bible gets better when you
[44:09] have fresh revelation from the Holy
[44:11] Spirit today. It requires the Holy
[44:13] Spirit." And these dry people that just
[44:15] want to, you know, interpret every word
[44:17] and understand every verse and look it
[44:19] up in the original language, they always
[44:21] make make fun of and mock those people.
[44:24] Um, it kind of breaks my heart. Um, yes,
[44:27] it's a problem. Okay, one of the other
[44:28] issues that comes up in the Passion
[44:30] Translation, I told you you're getting
[44:31] the full download today. Here's the full
[44:33] download. Okay, one of the other issues
[44:35] in the Passion Translation is this. Uh,
[44:37] Brian Simmons has sort of a an issue
[44:40] with the way women are treated in the
[44:42] Bible and he wants to change that. And
[44:44] so, one of those things is um, Proverbs
[44:47] 31. It's about the virtuous woman. He
[44:49] sees it may I maybe he sees it as a
[44:51] burden. So, he reinterprets the whole
[44:52] thing. Um, let me see because I actually
[44:56] I'm sure I've got this this somewhere.
[45:00] No, not there.
[45:03] Ah, here it is. Okay, listen to what he
[45:06] says about Proverbs.
[45:08] I know that sounds funny, but I'm not
[45:12] going to hide it. I believe God gave me
[45:14] the key to the book of Proverbs to
[45:16] unlock riddles, parables, dark speech,
[45:19] dark sayings. The proverbs of the wisest
[45:22] man on the earth. He came, the Lord
[45:24] spoke to me one time and he said, "Do
[45:25] you think if the wisest man I ever put
[45:28] upon the earth
[45:30] wrote a book, Proverbs, that it would
[45:33] have more in it than you think?" And
[45:36] that put me on a quest to say
[45:38] absolutely. He embedded some secrets.
[45:40] There are some things in there that only
[45:42] the spirit of wisdom can unlock. And the
[45:45] immature, the foolish one, which is
[45:47] referred to throughout the book of
[45:49] Proverbs, the foolish one, it's a closed
[45:50] book. Proverbs is just a a boring dos
[45:53] and don'ts, and you got to do this, you
[45:55] got to do that. But to the illumined
[45:57] heart, to the one drenched with the
[45:59] spirit of wisdom, I'm telling you, like
[46:01] Proverbs 31, I just ruined Mother's Day
[46:04] for like millions of Christians.
[46:07] Okay, I'll explain Proverbs 31 in just a
[46:09] second. So he's like, "I have the key. I
[46:11] have the secrets." And everybody else,
[46:13] they think Proverbs is just dos and
[46:14] don'ts. It's so boring.
[46:17] Side note, right? Dos and don'ts aren't
[46:19] boring. If you complain about the Bible
[46:20] having dos and don'ts, you're just
[46:21] rebellious. Like you just have a
[46:23] rebellious heart. Stop. Like God says,
[46:26] "Do this." And you're going to complain
[46:27] that it has the word do in the sentence.
[46:29] I don't understand. Um, but Proverbs 31,
[46:33] he says that the Proverbs 31 woman is
[46:35] actually, none of us have realized this,
[46:37] and actually commentators have suggested
[46:39] this for years. I just think they're
[46:40] wrong. They say that it's actually the
[46:42] bride of Christ. Right? So, um, Proverbs
[46:44] 31:10 in the ESV, it says, "An excellent
[46:47] wife who can find she's far more
[46:49] precious than jewels." His version, the
[46:52] passion says, "Who could ever find a
[46:53] wife like this one? She's a woman of
[46:55] strength and mighty valor. She is full
[46:57] of wealth and wisdom." And then he adds
[46:59] this. The price paid for her was greater
[47:00] than many jewels. Not she has price of
[47:04] value above jewels. The price paid for
[47:06] her. Ah, because he's making it into an
[47:07] allegory about the church being
[47:09] purchased by Jesus. And here's the
[47:11] dividing line. Some of you go, "Oo, I
[47:13] like that." Well, if you like it, get
[47:16] the Passion Translation. But if you care
[47:18] about truth, don't. Right? It's it's
[47:21] it's not okay to change the Bible to be
[47:25] more appealing, to change the Bible to
[47:26] be more about Jesus, to change the Bible
[47:28] to be more
[47:31] beautiful. That's not okay. It's not
[47:34] because you're not supposed to change
[47:35] what God has given us. In verse uh 14,
[47:39] the ESV, it says she's like the merchant
[47:41] ships, but the Passion translation
[47:43] making her into the church says she
[47:46] gives out revelation truth to feed
[47:48] others.
[47:50] She gives out revelation truth to feed
[47:51] others. Um verse 16 it actually says she
[47:55] considers a field and buys it and with
[47:57] the fruit of her hands she plants a
[47:59] vineyard. But in the passion translation
[48:00] verse 16 says she sets her heart upon a
[48:03] nation and takes it as her own carrying
[48:05] it within her. She labors there to plant
[48:08] the living vines.
[48:11] Not only is this going way beyond the
[48:12] meaning of the text, but this is now
[48:15] about their view of esquetology. They
[48:16] think that we're to disciple not just
[48:18] people but nations. That Christians will
[48:20] kind of take over nations. And so this
[48:22] is just putting that in the text. So now
[48:24] we can take their esquetology and find
[48:25] it in the Bible.
[48:27] He's embedding his particular sect of
[48:31] Christianity into the text. It's not
[48:34] okay. No bookstore should hold this
[48:37] book. No Christian should have it even
[48:39] as a second, third, or fifth translation
[48:43] because it's not faithful.
[48:46] One of the things Brian says he's
[48:48] learned from his revealed secrets as
[48:50] this because God revealed secrets to him
[48:52] um is that we've all been understanding
[48:54] Ephesians 5 incorrectly. And so let me
[48:56] read to you Ephesians 5:24. He doesn't
[48:58] like the idea of women submitting to
[49:00] their husbands. And so he says, "Now as
[49:01] the church submits to Christ, so also
[49:04] wives should submit to in everything to
[49:05] their husbands." And pretty much every
[49:06] translation is going to put put that
[49:09] pretty much the same way, right? But in
[49:10] the Passion translation, it says, "In
[49:12] the same way the church is devoted to
[49:14] Christ, let the wives be devoted to
[49:15] their husbands in everything." Now, for
[49:18] this, I thought,
[49:20] you don't know Greek. Most people don't
[49:22] know Greek. Aren't going to be able to
[49:24] go look up the word, but here we go.
[49:26] Let's actually look up the word.
[49:29] Um,
[49:32] in the Greek, the word translated
[49:34] submit. Here's what, six, seven, six
[49:37] Greek resources. um right on the page.
[49:41] I'll just let you read them, right? But
[49:42] they all mean the same thing. To subject
[49:43] yourself, to place yourself in
[49:44] submission. It's it the the the sense
[49:47] that the word is in, it's not being done
[49:49] to her. The wife is never being put in
[49:51] submission. That's called abuse, right?
[49:54] That's abuse. But the text does say that
[49:56] the wife is to submit voluntarily to her
[49:58] husband. She's doing it to herself. No
[50:00] one's doing it to her. All right? To
[50:02] submit to the orders and directives, to
[50:03] obey, be obedient. uh to bring under
[50:06] control would be in a different sense,
[50:07] same word, different way of using it. Um
[50:11] Greek English dictionary says be
[50:12] subject, submit to, be under the
[50:14] authority of, to place or rank under, to
[50:17] obey, and it goes on. Now, on a side
[50:19] note, you're actually reading my notes
[50:21] right now. Um I have teaching on
[50:23] husbands and wives and um there is a
[50:26] protection for wives. You can look at
[50:28] these online. um how to be a a a good
[50:31] husband as well as uh what the what the
[50:33] Bible really says about wives submit. I
[50:35] have videos on that online and I go into
[50:37] details on that. But the protection for
[50:39] the wife doesn't happen when we tell
[50:40] her, "No, don't submit to your husband
[50:42] and we change the text." The protection
[50:44] for the wife comes when the husband does
[50:47] his job to love her self-sacrificially
[50:49] and put her needs above his own. I mean,
[50:52] you will never be abusive when you love
[50:54] your wife more than yourself. You will
[50:56] never be abusive when you take
[50:57] self-sacrifice as your calling as a
[51:00] husband and realize that your pride is
[51:02] never an excuse to be rude or cruel or
[51:05] mean or um or a jerk or anything else.
[51:08] So there is protection for wives, sure,
[51:10] but not by changing the text of
[51:12] scripture. This will damage marriages.
[51:14] God has a way in which he set it up and
[51:16] we need to keep it that way. All right.
[51:18] More. I told you this movement that
[51:20] Brian's a part of is an apostolic
[51:22] movement. They believe they have modern
[51:24] apostles. And these apostles aren't just
[51:25] like missionaries. They're not just ones
[51:27] who are sent out. That's what the word
[51:28] aposto means. You're you're sent out.
[51:30] But they're apostles a little bit more
[51:32] like like um like Paul was and Peter was
[51:35] and James was, you know, like those
[51:37] guys, those kinds of apostles. And I
[51:40] don't agree, but it's important to them.
[51:42] And so he put it in the text. Ephesians
[51:44] 4:13. What it actually says, it says
[51:47] that God has given us like apostles,
[51:49] prophets, uh pastor, teachers. It gives
[51:51] a list of these different different
[51:52] ministries and then it says how long. It
[51:54] says until we all attain the unity of
[51:56] the faith and of the knowledge of the
[51:58] son of God to mature manhood to the
[52:00] measure of the stature of the fullness
[52:02] of Christ.
[52:03] Look what's added in verse 13 in the
[52:06] passion translation. These grace
[52:08] ministries will function and then it
[52:10] goes on until we all attain oneness in
[52:12] the faith and dot dot dot dot. Right?
[52:14] Why is this a big deal? Because
[52:16] Ephesians 4 is the hotly debated passage
[52:18] when we're dealing with this apostolic
[52:21] movement. Are apostles for today? Are
[52:24] apostles supposed to be in the church in
[52:26] the same sense they were in the early
[52:27] parts of the book of Acts? Is that
[52:29] supposed to happen right now? And
[52:32] Ephesians 4 is a debated passage. Well,
[52:34] the additions in Ephesians 4:13 make it
[52:37] irrefutable. Absolutely. These grace
[52:39] ministries will function until we all
[52:42] attain. All of them will. Not just
[52:44] pastor, teacher, not that. I know all of
[52:46] them will. So, this is apostolic
[52:48] teaching. I'd also like to read you a
[52:49] footnote in Acts 14:14.
[52:53] There's a footnote in the Passion
[52:54] Translation. Let me just bring bring us
[52:56] to it real quick.
[53:00] And I just want you I thought, well,
[53:01] what if people don't realize the nuance
[53:03] of what I'm saying? Um, so I'll read the
[53:06] footnote where he interprets it for you.
[53:08] So, Acts 14:14,
[53:12] where is that? It's in the Bible. I know
[53:14] it is.
[53:19] Okay, so I should have I should have
[53:20] marked it, but here it is. Um, here's
[53:22] his footnote from the Passion
[53:23] Translation. The book of Acts clearly
[53:25] states that there were more than 12
[53:26] apostles who were recognized by the
[53:28] church. Barnabas is described multiple
[53:30] times as an apostle. Ephesians 4 11-13,
[53:33] that's the verse I just read to you,
[53:34] says that apostles and prophets will
[53:36] minister and equip the body of Christ
[53:38] until we are complete and restored into
[53:40] Christ's fullness. Why do you think Bill
[53:43] Johnson endorsed this book? Why do you
[53:46] think it's going all it's if if if
[53:48] you're part of this apostolic movement,
[53:50] this is in your bookstore, if not your
[53:51] pews, if not the one you're teaching
[53:53] from on Sunday mornings. Um so that's
[53:57] adding to the text. There's another
[53:59] example in Jude 3. You may have already
[54:00] read it. If you're like me, you're just
[54:01] reading all this before I get there. Um,
[54:03] Jude 3, it says in the ESV, "Beloved,
[54:05] although I was very eager to write to
[54:07] you about our common salvation, I found
[54:08] it necessary to write appealing to you
[54:10] to contend for the faith that was once
[54:12] for all delivered to the saints." And
[54:13] that phrase, the faith, I love this
[54:15] stuff. It's the doctrines we believe as
[54:17] Christians. And you're to fight for it.
[54:19] We were once given Christianity. There's
[54:20] no additions later on. You fight for it.
[54:23] End of story. The issues closed, right?
[54:26] Jude 3. Dearly loved friends, I was
[54:29] fully intending to write to you about
[54:30] our amazing salvation because it's the
[54:32] passion translation. So, more adjectives
[54:34] we all participate in, but felt the need
[54:37] instead to challenge you to vigorously
[54:40] defend and contend for the beliefs that
[54:43] we cherish,
[54:45] for the beliefs that we cherish. For God
[54:48] through the apostles
[54:50] has once for all entrusted the these
[54:52] truths to his holy believers. So we
[54:55] don't get that the faith is finally and
[54:57] securely put in place and now we hold to
[54:59] it. Instead we have cherished truths and
[55:02] we have the idea of through the
[55:04] apostles. This fits perfectly for the
[55:06] this this apostolic group and their
[55:08] teaching. Um there's other passages
[55:12] where preaching points are added. Um I'm
[55:14] going to move I'm honestly I'm going to
[55:16] move forward because of the sake of
[55:18] time. You can look at these if you want.
[55:20] Um you just pause the screen. There's
[55:24] places where there's just straight
[55:25] misinterpretations of scripture,
[55:29] which I've already actually showed some,
[55:30] but here's one. Galatians 2:20. I've
[55:32] been crucified with Christ. It is no
[55:33] longer I who live, but Christ who lives
[55:35] in me. And the life I now live in the
[55:37] flesh. I live by faith in the Son of
[55:38] God, who loved me and gave himself for
[55:40] me. Love this verse. I think I already
[55:43] read it, didn't I? Yes, I did. How did I
[55:45] get that one in there multiple times?
[55:47] Never mind. Moving forward.
[55:50] Philippians 2:7 it says about Christ
[55:52] that he emptied himself by taking the
[55:54] form of a servant being born in the
[55:55] likeness of men. Well, here's the
[55:57] passion. Instead, he emptied himself of
[55:59] his outward glory. Okay? His outward
[56:02] glory by reducing himself to the form
[56:05] reducing himself to the form of a lowly
[56:07] servant. He became human.
[56:12] This is interpretation of the text and
[56:14] it's added concepts and changed words.
[56:18] And why? I don't know why. I don't have
[56:21] to know his heart here. In this case, I
[56:23] don't understand the the reasoning
[56:24] behind it. But there are, this is a
[56:26] really important theological passage.
[56:27] And to change the meaning of it is
[56:29] fiddling with theology. Philippians 2:9,
[56:32] therefore God has highly exalted him and
[56:34] bestowed on him the name that is above
[56:35] every name. His version says, because of
[56:38] that obedience, God exalted him and
[56:40] multiplied his greatness. That's another
[56:43] may God multiply your greatness. That's
[56:44] kind of one of their slogans as well.
[56:45] Uh, he has now been given the greatest
[56:47] of all names.
[56:50] Interesting.
[56:53] Okay. I do not have the time to go over
[56:55] all these. I knew I I knew that I would
[56:57] have to skip forward. So, what I'm going
[56:58] to do is I'm going to jump Yeah. I'm
[57:00] going to jump up to the concept of the
[57:02] Aramaic stuff. Um, so let me talk to you
[57:05] guys about um where is he getting all
[57:08] these translations from? That's the
[57:09] idea. And ultimately, he's getting it
[57:11] from the Aramaic. um on the website and
[57:14] and in his interviews, he says this
[57:16] phrase. He says, "Greek speaks to the
[57:17] mind while Aramaic and Hebrew speak
[57:19] powerfully to the heart." This is really
[57:21] important to Brian Simmons. It's like,
[57:23] you know, Aramaic is is is a language
[57:26] that speaks more to your heart. And I
[57:28] think if you
[57:30] think that's silly, okay, but let's just
[57:33] grant it. Fine. Aramaic speaks to the
[57:34] heart. Now, the actual Bible was written
[57:37] in in in the Old Testament. We have
[57:39] Hebrew mostly, but we have other we have
[57:40] Aramaic in there. We have a couple other
[57:42] things as well. Um, but the New
[57:44] Testament was written in Greek. It's
[57:45] just Greek. Occasionally, an Aramaic
[57:47] word pops in. But we do know that the
[57:49] language of Jesus was probably Aramaic.
[57:51] That's something we we do know.
[57:55] And this is going to get a little
[57:56] confusing, I think, but I'm going to do
[57:58] my best to explain it. Brian gives the
[58:01] impression as though he in his
[58:03] translation is getting you back to the
[58:05] language of Jesus, the Aramaic that
[58:07] Jesus spoke. The implication is that
[58:09] when he in his footnotes says Aramaic,
[58:11] that word Aramaic comes up that and it
[58:13] does come up a lot. Here's an example of
[58:15] just one page. Um, when he says Aramaic,
[58:18] he's going to the original language
[58:19] Jesus spoke and it's like more original
[58:21] than the Greek. And it's true that the
[58:24] Aramaic was more original than the
[58:25] Greek, right? Jesus spoke Aramaic. But
[58:28] here's this here's the fiddly part, the
[58:30] confusing part. Brian makes it sound
[58:34] like he's going to the original Aramaic
[58:36] Jesus spoke, but we don't have the
[58:37] original Aramaic. What he's really going
[58:39] to is a translation in Aramaic of the
[58:42] Greek. So, the Bible was written in
[58:44] Greek. The apostles translated for us
[58:48] what Jesus says into Greek. Write it
[58:50] down for us. Hundreds of years later,
[58:52] they translated from Greek into Aramaic.
[58:54] He's using that Aramaic. It's a doc,
[58:56] it's a document or a group of documents
[58:58] called the pashita. So he uses the
[59:00] pashita, a translation of the Greek into
[59:03] Aramaic hundreds of years after Jesus.
[59:05] My point here is these these these
[59:08] footnotes where he's constantly saying
[59:09] the Aramaic the Aramaic he makes it
[59:12] sound like the the Aramaic is actually
[59:15] um the original
[59:18] the original writings but in reality
[59:21] it's not. It's not. So let me give you
[59:22] an example from his website from the
[59:24] passion translation uh frequently asked
[59:26] questions portion of the website. It
[59:29] says Dr. Simmons compared both Greek and
[59:30] Aramaic and here he acknowledges
[59:33] translations. He calls them translations
[59:35] throughout this monumental project. You
[59:37] may consider the passion translation as
[59:38] a synthesis of the two.
[59:41] So we have Greek the original Greek
[59:42] language and we have an Aramaic
[59:44] translation of the Greek language.
[59:45] That's that's honest. You may consider
[59:47] the passion a synthesis. Right? Then
[59:49] when he has resorted to using the
[59:51] alternative Aramaic text, which may vary
[59:53] minimally from the Greek, you will
[59:55] notice an explanation explanatory
[59:57] footnote to let you know, as I showed
[59:59] you, they're all over the book. We
[60:01] believe using the original ancient
[60:03] Aramaic sources in additional to the
[60:05] original Greek ones adds an important
[60:08] lens. Do you do you get what they just
[60:10] did? They've on one hand acknowledged
[60:12] that the Aramaic is a translation, but
[60:14] then a sentence later they're they're
[60:16] talking about it like it's the original
[60:18] Aramaic. Jesus spoke Aramaic. It's the
[60:21] original Aramaic. That's that's the
[60:22] concept. Now, there was actually a blog
[60:24] done where um a guy who actually knows
[60:27] these languages. Um I've linked it in
[60:29] the video description, a blog um on
[60:31] thinktheology.co.uk.
[60:34] Um and the blog's called uh the article
[60:36] is called What's Wrong with the Passion
[60:37] Translation? And in it, um, Brian
[60:40] Simmons is is called to task for several
[60:42] things. And one of them is he's called
[60:43] to task because he quotes two, um, two
[60:46] specific experts in ancient languages,
[60:49] Bird and Kenir. And he quotes these two
[60:51] guys to support his translation. Now,
[60:53] Bird and Kenir, it turns out, didn't
[60:55] like being quoted like that. So, in the
[60:57] in the article, he says, "Hey, I I
[60:59] contacted Bird." He says, "Don't quote
[61:00] me like that." I know this sounds like
[61:02] this sounds like a drama I'm telling you
[61:04] guys here, but this is what happened.
[61:05] It's all in the articles below. Um,
[61:07] afterwards, Brian responded to the
[61:09] article and he goes, "Hey, I won't I'll
[61:11] remove the quotes. I didn't mean to take
[61:12] their quotes out of context because
[61:14] basically Bird and Kenir were talking
[61:15] about Aramaic, the language." And he
[61:17] quotes them like they're talking about
[61:18] the Pashita, the Aramaic translation,
[61:20] which is what he does. It's a
[61:21] switcheroo. And he does it throughout
[61:23] the whole translation. And he says,
[61:25] "I'll just remove their quotes." That
[61:27] was like two years ago, or maybe it was
[61:29] one year ago. The quotes are still on
[61:30] the FAQ. It's still online on his
[61:32] website. He still quotes Keenird out of
[61:35] context. and he said he wouldn't do
[61:37] that. I think that's a problem. Um, so
[61:43] that's a lot of information. Let me kind
[61:45] of break down a few more things and then
[61:47] we'll get to your guys questions and
[61:48] we'll give we'll do our giveaway. The
[61:50] translator's job, right? What is the
[61:52] translator's job is to communicate the
[61:54] meaning of the original. That's the
[61:55] whole job of a translator. You're just
[61:57] supposed to get across what the original
[61:58] meant, right? But he seeks to improve
[62:01] the original and he uses Arab an Aramaic
[62:03] translation but he uses it selectively.
[62:06] He can't even say because there's groups
[62:08] that think, oh the pashita really
[62:09] represents some old older tradition and
[62:11] it's it's more authoritative than the
[62:13] Greek. But he doesn't think that
[62:14] obviously because he just uses it
[62:16] whenever he wants. There's no
[62:17] consistency to it. He just uses it, it
[62:19] seems, whenever he wants to um to make
[62:22] his points, to make the changes, to make
[62:23] a sectarian translation. So what this
[62:26] comes down to is um whether you trust
[62:29] Brian or not, whether you think that
[62:31] that that this describes Brian, I is is
[62:33] this what really happens in his
[62:34] translation?
[62:34] I want the Holy Spirit to be my best
[62:36] friend
[62:38] like intimate lovers that the spirit
[62:41] would would breathe into me and as I
[62:43] exhaled it becomes revelation to the
[62:45] people of God.
[62:49] Do you do you trust that? That's what's
[62:50] happening with Brian's
[62:51] and I've already got people like
[62:53] Oh, I I Hold on. This is the on his
[62:56] website he says this is not a sectarian
[62:58] translation. I'm not trying to recruit
[63:00] people to my version of Christianity,
[63:02] right? But this is what he says in uh
[63:05] when he's preaching amongst a crowd of
[63:07] people who agree with him. People like
[63:09] slamming it. I got whole web pages
[63:11] telling how I'm the devil. You know,
[63:15] they listed me as one of the most
[63:17] dangerous Christians in our in the
[63:20] prophetic apostolic spiritfilled
[63:22] movement right now. They listed me as
[63:24] one of the one of the most dangerous
[63:25] because of this translation is going to
[63:27] change the church. I said it takes my
[63:30] enemies to get it. My enemies are
[63:32] prophesying. What's what's going to
[63:34] happen? And we bless them. They're not
[63:36] my enemy in that regard. I'm not not
[63:38] going to hurt them.
[63:40] I'm glad he's not going to hurt us. I
[63:42] mean, nobody thought you were going to
[63:43] hurt us, right? But the the idea I mean,
[63:45] I think he would consider me his enemy
[63:46] because I'm coming out against his
[63:47] translation. I I'm not his enemy. I hope
[63:49] he would hear rebuke. But the thing is,
[63:51] it's kind of too late to give him a
[63:53] private rebuke here. He's putting a
[63:54] translation out and piping it out to the
[63:56] entire Christian world. And so, we need
[63:58] to deal with the translation and we've
[63:59] got to deal with it publicly. This is
[64:01] not a Matthew 18 situation by any
[64:03] stretch of the imagination. Um, I mean,
[64:06] every every translation takes liberties,
[64:08] right? This is not taking some
[64:10] liberties. This is changing the meaning.
[64:12] a sect focused translation that distorts
[64:14] theology in some places, adds content
[64:16] not in the original, sometimes uses ital
[64:19] italics, sometimes it just doesn't even
[64:21] though it's adding things. Um, and my
[64:24] fear is what's coming next because Brian
[64:26] has promised us that he has more
[64:28] revelation coming in the future. Let me
[64:31] share with you about John 22. This is he
[64:33] he says he has a vision where he was
[64:35] taken up into heaven and he saw a
[64:36] library and God allowed him to take
[64:38] books. He won't tell us what both the
[64:39] books were. One of them he says is a
[64:41] secret and he can't tell anybody. But
[64:42] then he talks about how he there's
[64:44] another book one day God will give him
[64:45] called John 22. Now there's only 21
[64:47] chapters in John. So the implication is
[64:49] pretty obvious what he means by that.
[64:51] But listen to this
[64:52] come to that encounter for those two
[64:54] books.
[64:54] Which two?
[64:56] Well, one uh one I can't say. I'm not uh
[65:01] released to say what that is yet. But uh
[65:03] the other was uh the spirit of
[65:05] revelation. And I believe God is wanting
[65:08] to pour out the spirit of revelation on
[65:09] his people. And I came back with a fresh
[65:12] infusion. Uh one of the seven spirits of
[65:15] God is the spirit of revelation
[65:17] knowledge, the spirit of discovery. And
[65:19] that anointing I know uh came on my life
[65:22] in that experience.
[65:23] And and so this would you say this
[65:26] allows you to be a better teacher
[65:29] because of the spirit of revelation? How
[65:31] how does this play out practically?
[65:33] Well, every time I open the Bible, I get
[65:36] fresh insight. I I it speaks to me. It
[65:38] goes beyond the mind. I I get uh dreams
[65:41] and and revelation from from the Lord
[65:44] that is clear and uh prophetic. So, I
[65:49] think Sid, I believe I got baptized in
[65:51] the spirit of revelation in that library
[65:53] room of heaven.
[65:54] Now, there was another book that caught
[65:56] your eye even though you said he said
[65:58] you could only have two.
[66:00] I found a third one and uh I tried to
[66:04] for a moment I I know my sinfulness
[66:07] coming out but for a moment I thought
[66:09] how can I steal this book? How can I get
[66:11] this book? I've already found I if I
[66:14] could only take this book it would
[66:16] change the world. Every nation would
[66:18] come to know Jesus. It would shake the
[66:20] world if I could get this book.
[66:22] Oh, I'd like that book too.
[66:25] And uh
[66:26] what was the title? said he he said,
[66:29] "Brian, I can't let you have that book,
[66:30] but I will another day. I will bring you
[66:33] back one day, and I will give you the
[66:35] book." And written on the cover of the
[66:37] book was John 22.
[66:41] But wait a second, there's only 21
[66:43] chapters in John. How could that be?
[66:45] That's right. The last uh verse of
[66:48] chapter 21, it says John writes that if
[66:52] if everything Jesus did was were to be
[66:55] written down, I suppose that the earth
[66:57] itself could not contain the books that
[67:00] would be written. And that's how John's
[67:02] gospel ends. But I saw John 22 in the
[67:06] library room of heaven. And I know that
[67:08] is not adding to the scriptures. I would
[67:11] never imply that. There's nothing more
[67:13] going to be added to what is written.
[67:16] But the works of Jesus, the John 14:12
[67:19] generation of greater works. There's
[67:22] coming a day when a John 22 company will
[67:25] complete and finish and release to the
[67:29] earth the works of Jesus again.
[67:34] Okay, I think that was the end of that
[67:35] clip. Um, yeah,
[67:39] the Passion translation. There it is.
[67:41] Okay, look, there's more. I could sit
[67:43] down and do the next probably three
[67:46] months worth of live streams just
[67:48] looking at different tren different, you
[67:49] know, verses and stuff. He has a very
[67:51] particular view of Revelation. He thinks
[67:52] that um the second coming is not what we
[67:55] think. We're wrong about the second
[67:56] coming. And so he's going to adjust
[67:58] Revelation appropriately for that. Um he
[68:01] um he thinks that uh the Antichrist is
[68:04] different than what most people think
[68:06] the Antichrist is. And he thinks it's
[68:07] being antitheting of God's spirit. And
[68:09] so he's going to uh do all this stuff.
[68:13] And if you were to challenge Brian, let
[68:16] me prepare you for something. If you
[68:17] were to challenge him, what he would
[68:18] probably say is, "I love Jesus. I pray
[68:20] every day." I've heard him say this like
[68:21] over and over again now. I pray every
[68:23] day and I seek the Lord and I have a
[68:25] commission from God. I'm just trying to
[68:26] be faithful what God's called me to do.
[68:28] And the thing is, none of that matters.
[68:32] None of that matters when we can look at
[68:34] the actual text of scripture and say,
[68:35] "That's not what it says. you've added
[68:38] to the text when it comes to his visions
[68:40] and all that. Look, if you were having
[68:42] real revelation from God, why is it
[68:44] different than the real revelation God
[68:45] has already given his people in the Holy
[68:47] Spirit inspired scriptures? Why is there
[68:50] additions? Was it not good enough
[68:52] before? Like either the Bible was never
[68:54] ultimately good enough,
[68:57] right? Because he had to add to it or
[69:00] it's good enough and we can stick with
[69:01] it. Um, yeah. So, that's the deal. Now,
[69:05] what I want to do is I'm going to go to
[69:06] your guys questions. AJ, you can send me
[69:07] those questions and I'll do our giveaway
[69:09] real quick before we jump into all the
[69:11] the the Q&A. Thank you so much for joining
[71:45] me. It's been uh it's been good. I hope
[71:47] it's been useful. Look, I'm really
[71:49] concerned about this translation and I I
[71:51] do hope to draw awareness to it um
[71:54] because I love the word of God and I
[71:56] love the people of God and I think that
[71:57] this does a disservice to both. So, Juan
[72:00] Pulgarin says, "Hey, Mike. Uh why do
[72:02] people make a make new translations that
[72:03] change the meaning of scripture knowing
[72:04] it is one of the most dangerous things
[72:06] you can do? I think they genuinely think
[72:08] they're doing good." Look, here's the
[72:10] options, right? Brian is either
[72:12] pretending that he is getting the
[72:14] spiritual insight like intentionally or
[72:16] he thinks he's getting it but he's maybe
[72:19] being led by his own heart, his
[72:20] imagination, the things that excite him,
[72:23] the things that draw him. And so he's
[72:24] confusing perhaps his own heart or maybe
[72:26] something else with the Holy Spirit. And
[72:28] so I think that's what's happening. I I
[72:30] think he's doing it. I think he's
[72:32] sincere. I just think he's wrong. Um or
[72:36] some people just hate God, but I don't I
[72:38] wouldn't put him in that category. Um,
[72:40] question from Maya Cox.
[72:42] Mike, can you or it might be Micaia, can
[72:45] you deal with the theology of Hill Song?
[72:47] You know, I honestly don't know the
[72:48] theology of Hill Song. I mean, I know a
[72:50] bunch of their songs, but I've never
[72:51] really listen much to their theology.
[72:53] So, there's really a lot of teachers out
[72:56] there people ask me about where I just
[72:57] go, I I don't know, you know, I haven't
[72:59] paid enough attention. I do a lot of
[73:01] research and work before I speak openly
[73:03] about something like the passion or or
[73:04] anything like that. I try to make sure
[73:07] that I know where I'm coming from and
[73:08] I'm not going to look back a year later
[73:09] and be like, why did I say that, you
[73:10] know? Um, so I I just don't know. Um,
[73:12] from Kalin Vancan, Pastor Mike, what is
[73:15] your opinion on the New Apostolic
[73:17] Reformation? They use this translation
[73:19] while referencing other translations as
[73:21] well. The church I attend encourages us
[73:24] to read the Passion along with the New
[73:26] King James or other more traditional
[73:28] translations. So, when the Passion
[73:30] translation is not solely used, is it
[73:32] okay? Um, okay. Okay, the new apostolic
[73:34] reformation. I I think that and maybe
[73:37] I'm wrong here, guys. I think that that
[73:39] terminology that in AR is not the right
[73:42] term to umbrella the whole group that
[73:44] you're really thinking about. I I don't
[73:47] know what to call the group, so I just
[73:48] call them like an apostolic movement um
[73:50] with signs and wonders. I don't have a
[73:52] special term for it. Um so, I've talked
[73:55] more about that in the video I did on
[73:57] Bethl and Bill Johnson and you can find
[73:59] that online. Um,
[74:02] but I don't think you should use the
[74:03] Passion Translation at all in any way,
[74:06] shape, or form. Not as a secondary or
[74:08] tertiary Bible. Like, I think it's very
[74:11] unwise to use it at all. That's my
[74:12] honest opinion. Because of these
[74:14] changes, you're I mean, what if you
[74:15] don't notice what if you don't notice
[74:17] the shift and the change and then you're
[74:19] going out and building your life based
[74:20] upon a poor translation? That's
[74:22] unfortunate.
[74:24] Um, okay. Question from Chris Buckland.
[74:27] Mike, you recently switched over to the
[74:28] ESV from the New King James. What are
[74:30] your thoughts so far? Any insights to
[74:32] why you would recommend such a switch
[74:34] for those still using the New King
[74:35] James. Uh, what would your advice be to
[74:37] a Calvary Chapel pastor who currently
[74:39] uses New King James and is considering
[74:40] the ESV? Reasons to change. Okay, I'm
[74:42] not I'm not settled. I'm going to settle
[74:45] and when I do, it will not be on the New
[74:46] King James Version. And the reason for
[74:48] that is not because it's a bad it's
[74:49] actually good translation, but my
[74:52] understanding is that the texts that
[74:54] it's translated from
[74:57] are not um not reflecting the best
[75:00] scholarship that we have today. I have a
[75:03] little playlist of videos on my channel
[75:05] to explain all this in great detail. So
[75:07] there's no demonization here. This isn't
[75:09] like the New King James is not like the
[75:10] passion. It's a good translation. you
[75:12] can use it, but in many places I think
[75:15] it's going to cause trouble when you're
[75:16] looking at the footnotes and you're
[75:17] going, "Oh, why is this not reflecting
[75:19] the the newest and or I should say best
[75:21] understanding of scholarship?" Um, so
[75:24] ESV, how does it work? I I tend to
[75:25] really like the ESV in the New
[75:27] Testament. Personally, I'm I'm not sure
[75:29] if I really love it in the Old
[75:30] Testament, so I'm not sure if I'm going
[75:32] to stick with it or not, but I think
[75:33] it's a good option. Um, and for me, it's
[75:36] like the Bible's so big. How long do you
[75:37] have to be reading and studying to
[75:40] really settle on a translation for years
[75:42] and years to come? So, I'm still feeling
[75:43] out the ESV. That's my that's my
[75:45] thought. Um, when it comes to helping
[75:49] equip your students in and the young
[75:51] people in your church for handling
[75:52] challenges to the Bible, when they talk
[75:54] about what about the ending of Mark and
[75:56] what about John chapter 8 and 1 John uh
[75:58] 4:7, when they ask those challenging
[76:01] questions about those passages, if
[76:02] they're raised on the New King James,
[76:04] they have not been equipped to deal with
[76:05] them. At least the ESV not only has uh
[76:09] great texts and translations, especially
[76:11] the New Testament, but it also has
[76:12] wonderful footnotes that will equip them
[76:14] to handle the skeptics. And I think that
[76:16] that's kind of important. Okay, number
[76:18] five. Sarah Boamp says, "Hi, Pastor
[76:20] Mike. Is the New Living Translation okay
[76:22] for comprehension clarity or do you
[76:24] consider it not good?" Um, I like it and
[76:26] I think it's a good idea. You want like
[76:28] a simple translation that just kind of
[76:31] tries to make things more clear. I
[76:33] personally really like the New Living
[76:35] Translation and I very much would
[76:36] recommend it for that purpose. Not for
[76:38] like careful verse byvere study but for
[76:40] casual reading yes I would much better
[76:42] choice than say the passion from Drew
[76:46] Mcclead. Does the author of this version
[76:48] know the original languages? Um he does
[76:50] to some extent. I don't know how well he
[76:53] knows them and so I don't want to
[76:54] comment on that. Um, Kayn Vancone, what
[76:58] does Mike think about uh Damon Thompson
[77:01] in general or his revival out of South
[77:03] Carolina? Sorry, Kaylin. I'm not really
[77:05] familiar with that guy or or what he's
[77:07] doing, so I can't speak to it. Um, okay.
[77:10] From the the winner of of the gummy bear
[77:12] question, the Joe Chinson's, um, they
[77:15] say, "Can you ask uh Mike his opinion on
[77:19] the New King James versus NIV?" I'm
[77:21] specifically interested in his opinion
[77:22] on the NIV. I do get into that in my
[77:24] video on Bible translations. I if you
[77:26] just Google Mike Winger Bible
[77:27] Translations, it'll pop right up. Um, so
[77:29] I do talk in detail about that. I
[77:33] I
[77:36] kind of like the NIV, but I don't want
[77:38] to use it as the Bible I teach from for
[77:40] a couple reasons, but I don't vilify it
[77:42] like many people do. I think calling it
[77:43] the not inspired version is very unwise
[77:46] and very reckless. Um, think about what
[77:48] you're really saying about that
[77:50] translation. Do you really mean that?
[77:52] Um, it still teaches the deity of
[77:54] Christ. There's a lot of weird rumors
[77:55] about the NIV that aren't true. I have a
[77:56] couple problems with it, but I do
[77:57] express those in my video. Generally
[78:00] though, I think it's a very good
[78:01] translation. Um, but since I have other
[78:03] options, I'll take those options. If all
[78:04] I have is NIV, I would definitely teach
[78:06] from it. And if it was NIV or or New
[78:08] King James, I would probably use NIV to
[78:10] be honest. Um, because of the textual
[78:13] issues that I mentioned earlier. Okay.
[78:16] Also, another question, and it might be
[78:17] Yakinson's, I don't know. Sorry if I'm
[78:20] probably butchering your name. Uh, Mike,
[78:22] what do you think about the CSB version?
[78:23] Is it a good translation? Okay, so I
[78:25] studied the Holman Christian Standard
[78:27] Bible. I looked into that one. They then
[78:29] changed a bunch of stuff and they
[78:30] printed it as the Christian Standard
[78:32] Bible since then. I haven't looked into
[78:34] it deeply, so I can't speak too much
[78:36] about it. Um, yeah, sorry, but it it's
[78:39] seems good. That's all I can tell you.
[78:42] Uh, Tom Sawyer says, "Hello, Mike. Can
[78:44] you give your opinion on the NetBible?"
[78:46] Um, I like the NetBible. NetBible.org or
[78:49] is a fantastic free research resource.
[78:54] Not sure if I would use it as a
[78:56] translation or not, as a normal
[78:58] translation or not. I don't know. Uh but
[78:59] the resource netbible.org is incredible
[79:02] and I do recommend it. They have tons of
[79:03] notes and footnotes and stuff to learn
[79:05] from. From Arturo, Arturo Echavaria. Um
[79:08] hey man, good to hear from you. Um hey
[79:11] Mike, what would be your criteria for
[79:13] qualifying something as a solid
[79:14] translation or paraphrase? Miss you
[79:16] brother. Yeah, you too man. I'm sorry I
[79:18] didn't get to connect with you when you
[79:19] were in town the other day. Um,
[79:21] so criteria,
[79:24] I mean, it just has to be faithful to
[79:26] the original. It can't make claims it
[79:27] doesn't fulfill. It should be
[79:28] consistent. Um, you like the New Living
[79:31] Translation is consistent in in that
[79:34] it's some somewhat more of a paraphrase,
[79:36] you know, but it's consistently so and
[79:39] it's, I think, pretty faithful to the
[79:40] original. So, that's got to be the
[79:42] biggest thing, faithful to the original.
[79:44] um you know, not sectarian in the sense
[79:47] where it's like pushing specific agendas
[79:49] to get you to believe certain theologies
[79:50] that where it's going to adapt the text
[79:52] to make that sound better, that sort of
[79:54] thing. There's a couple ideas for you.
[79:55] I'm sure there's a lot more that can be
[79:56] said about that.
[79:59] From uh Ilsa, question for Mike. What
[80:01] are your thoughts on the Passion
[80:02] Translations translation of Song of
[80:04] Songs um chapter 4? It's a specific
[80:07] question there. It has Jesus speaking to
[80:08] the church and calling them his equal. I
[80:11] didn't even get into Song of Songs. Um,
[80:13] Brian Simmons translated Song of Songs
[80:15] fairly early on. Um, and it received a
[80:18] tons of negative criticism and I thought
[80:20] that's already online so I just didn't
[80:22] really even touch on that. Um, but I
[80:24] think in general what he did was he took
[80:26] Song of Songs and he thought I have an
[80:28] allegorical interpretation. This is
[80:30] about Jesus in the church. And then he
[80:31] pushed that interpretation into the text
[80:34] unjustifiably.
[80:35] Now may maybe it's allegorical. Maybe
[80:37] it's about Jesus in the church. But that
[80:38] doesn't mean you can change the words to
[80:40] make it sound more like what you want it
[80:41] to sound like. That's wrong. That would
[80:44] be my opinion. As far as Jesus and the
[80:46] church being equal, that's also bad
[80:48] theology. I haven't read that verse, so
[80:50] I don't know what it says, but yeah,
[80:52] Jesus and the church aren't aren't
[80:53] equal. Um, that might be part of his
[80:55] whole idea between husbands and wives.
[80:58] Actually, he might be motivated there
[80:59] because he really hates the wife submit
[81:01] concept in Ephesians. Um, he says it's
[81:04] like one of his one of his like hobby
[81:06] horses that he's on. Um, so Kaylin
[81:08] Vancone says, "Another question." Um,
[81:10] and maybe Pastor Mike will get to this,
[81:12] but based on everything, I'm guessing he
[81:14] doesn't agree with the passion
[81:15] translation Song of Solomon. I Well,
[81:19] there may well be allegorical elements
[81:20] there. I actually would agree with the
[81:22] allegorical side of things. I do not
[81:24] agree with the way he translated it.
[81:27] from Allan9. Mike, do you think I'd be
[81:30] more it'd be more difficult to deal with
[81:31] individuals in the N now that they have
[81:35] this book as opposed to dealing with
[81:36] Jehovah's Witnesses and their New World
[81:38] Translation? Well, the good news about
[81:39] the NI is I don't think they're
[81:40] compromising the gospel. And I mean,
[81:42] some people are like, "Yes, they are,
[81:43] Mike. Don't say that." Maybe they maybe
[81:45] they are, and I'm not aware of it. Okay,
[81:47] so forgive me here. I I'll admit that I
[81:49] may just not know it. My current
[81:51] operating procedure is that the people
[81:53] in the group you're calling the N who I
[81:55] wouldn't I wouldn't call them that but
[81:57] the people you're referring to
[81:59] they in my mind are believers who love
[82:02] Jesus. Now the leadership there may be
[82:04] questions about them but I'm talking
[82:05] about the people right you're asking
[82:07] about the people um when they have this
[82:10] Bible over the next few years they'll
[82:11] have proof texts more and more proof
[82:13] texts to support their particular sect
[82:16] and so it will be difficult to deal with
[82:18] them biblically. Um, so that will be a
[82:20] problem. I'll just acknowledge that much
[82:22] at least. Um, Kathy Be good says, "Is
[82:25] the Passion Bible claiming to be a
[82:26] translation or a transmission?"
[82:28] Not that either makes it okay. Um, but
[82:30] if it's claiming translation, did he
[82:32] make his own critical apparatus? Um, I
[82:35] don't think he made any critical
[82:36] apparatus. Um, I'm pretty sure he did
[82:38] not do that. It's he's it's not kind of
[82:41] that sort of thing, you know, where he's
[82:43] it's it's not systematic like that. He
[82:46] claims it's a translation and he defends
[82:47] this claim. People challenge him on it.
[82:49] They say, "That's not really a
[82:50] translation." He goes, "Yes, it is. Even
[82:52] a paraphrase is a translation." So, he
[82:53] calls it a translation. And he says, for
[82:56] instance, um, is it a good translation
[82:59] for serious study? This is off their
[83:00] website. The Passion translation is an
[83:03] excellent translation you can use as
[83:04] your primary text to seriously study
[83:06] God's word because it combines the best
[83:09] aspects of what's called formal and
[83:10] functional equivalent Bibles. It's a
[83:12] balanced translation. And it goes on to
[83:14] talk more about what it is there. So,
[83:17] yeah, they definitely call it a
[83:18] translation. and he emphasizes that
[83:20] quite frequently.
[83:22] Um, question from private name. It says,
[83:24] "Please ask Mike if modern prophesying
[83:26] equals divine biblical revelation. It
[83:28] seems to me that the Bible is clear
[83:29] about that it is the final authority." I
[83:32] would agree with you 100%. Whatever you
[83:35] say God's telling you, the Bible trumps
[83:37] that. This is the clear revelation of
[83:39] God we've got. It trumps that. Um, and
[83:42] so there's there's no contest there
[83:44] between what someone's telling me God's
[83:46] revealing to them and what the Bible has
[83:47] has declared. Um, Kaylin Vancone um
[83:51] asked another question. Pastor Mike, why
[83:53] was the Old Testament translated as
[83:55] well? I've searched and couldn't find
[83:57] this. Why wasn't it couldn't find the
[83:59] answer. I think he just hasn't got
[84:00] around to it. He's he's planning on
[84:02] doing all 66 books. He's going to
[84:03] translate the rest of the Old Testament.
[84:05] It's just Psalms, Proverbs, Song of
[84:06] Solomon. I think that's it right now.
[84:08] And then the New Testament. He's on it.
[84:11] He's on his path doing the rest of the
[84:13] Old Testament. Um, will he I predict
[84:15] he'll never get it done or he'll hire
[84:18] people to help him with it because it's
[84:20] a lot to do and it took him a long time
[84:22] to do what he already has done. But
[84:24] we'll see. Um, last question for
[84:26] tonight. Linda Richardson, could you ask
[84:28] Mike if it's possible to do a general
[84:30] Q&A sometime as people online have so
[84:31] many different questions off topic? Yes,
[84:34] we can do that. In fact, I'm thinking we
[84:37] might do that very soon. So, either
[84:41] maybe even next week, I'm not sure. I
[84:43] can't promise just yet. I'm not I'm I
[84:44] don't know exactly what I'm going to do,
[84:45] but but maybe next week we'll do um just
[84:48] a general Q&A and I'll just come online
[84:50] and whoever floods into the comments
[84:51] section can be part of it and I'll just
[84:53] answer as many questions as I can from
[84:56] you guys and we'll just kind of have it
[84:57] like a like a a loose hangout. I'll
[84:59] probably bring a few thoughts that I
[85:00] might want to share. Um but I hope this
[85:02] has been helpful to you guys. If you
[85:04] know people who are using this, I'm
[85:06] hoping that I did this video in such a
[85:08] way that they might be able to sit
[85:10] through it and listen. Um, I went right
[85:11] to the text of scripture, tried to show
[85:13] exactly where it's wrong. My goal with
[85:16] this channel is to uh reach out to the
[85:18] to the unsaved, but also to be of
[85:20] service to the Christians and to the
[85:21] believers to build them up and
[85:23] strengthen them and to deal with
[85:25] oftentimes things very few people are
[85:27] dealing with and hopefully to deal with
[85:28] it in a way that makes a lot of sense.
[85:31] So, I'm hoping that this is this has
[85:32] been really useful for you guys and um
[85:35] something that might be worth sharing.
[85:37] So, thank you for being here. Thanks,
[85:39] AJ, for being in the comments section.
[85:40] It feels like we've been going for quite
[85:41] a while today. Um looking forward to uh
[85:44] stopping my talking. So, so yes, um let
[85:49] me get
[85:51] How do I do this? I I've got to get um I
[85:54] didn't even think about this ahead of
[85:55] time. I got to get the contact info for
[85:58] um for the family or the people that
[86:00] won. So hopefully AJ just grabbed that
[86:04] and can get that to me. If not, um send
[86:07] me a message through my through my uh
[86:10] contact form on biblethinker.org. Just
[86:12] tell me who you were and I'll know
[86:13] you're the one that won and we'll get
[86:15] you all the data for the information. So
[86:17] I'm I'm sorry I didn't plan that out
[86:18] very well because I realize now there's
[86:21] so many comments in this comment stream
[86:22] that I don't know where your email might
[86:24] be. So hopefully AJ's grabbed that.
[86:26] Anyways, God bless you guys. It's been a
[86:28] good time with you. I look forward to uh
[86:30] next time. ๐Ÿ“„ **Full text:** ![[Full Document Contents/Articles/My Concerns About the Passion Translation and Brian Simmons.md|My Concerns About the Passion Translation and Brian Simmons by YouTube]] ## Highlights - that's not what it says.
