Regular frames automatically capture nearby elements when created or resized, which can disrupt intended slide boundaries or create unwanted clipping effects. The new marker frame system provides visual placeholders with dashed borders and sharp corners (versus regular frames' solid borders and rounded corners) that serve purely organizational purposes. They don't interfere with existing elements while still providing the structural benefits of frames for presentations, print layouts, and image annotation. The feature integrates with existing Excalidraw scripts, including an enhanced printable layout wizard that now supports mixed page orientations and the slideshow presentation system. This allows for sophisticated document creation within Obsidian's visual environment. ## ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Notes #### โฑ๏ธ [00:00](https://youtu.be/DqDnzCOoYMc?t=0) โ€” [H1] Introduction to marker frames feature - Key idea: New Excalidraw feature addresses presentation and layout creation issues - Evidence: "These are super useful for presentations, print layouts, as well as for referencing parts of images" #### โฑ๏ธ [00:30](https://youtu.be/DqDnzCOoYMc?t=30) โ€” [H2] Visual differences between frame types - Key idea: Marker frames have distinct visual indicators to differentiate from regular frames - Evidence: "Frame has a solid border while the marker frame has a dashed border and the frame has a rounded corner. The marker frame has a sharp corner" #### โฑ๏ธ [01:15](https://youtu.be/DqDnzCOoYMc?t=75) โ€” [H3] Regular frame behavior demonstration - Key idea: Regular frames automatically capture and clip elements when moved or resized - Evidence: "If you draw a shape in a frame, then if you move the frame, then the shape moves with the item" #### โฑ๏ธ [02:00](https://youtu.be/DqDnzCOoYMc?t=120) โ€” [H1] Marker frame non-capturing behavior - Key idea: Marker frames don't capture elements, serving purely as placeholders - Evidence: "If I draw an object on a marker frame, nothing happens. Today I
[00:03] want to introduce to you a new feature
[00:05] in Obsidian Excolit called marker
[00:08] frames. These are super useful for
[00:12] presentations, print layouts, as well as
[00:15] for referencing parts of images, but
[00:18] they require a bit of explaining. So
[00:22] bear with me. Let me walk you through
[00:24] and let's get started. Before we talk
[00:27] about the marker frames, we need to talk
[00:29] about what was already in place in Excel
[00:33] Draw, the normal frame tool. So this is
[00:36] here the new option. I'm going to turn
[00:38] off marker frames. And you can see that
[00:40] when I draw a frame, a frame has a solid
[00:44] border while the marker frame has a
[00:47] dashed border and the frame has a
[00:49] rounded corner. The marker frame has a
[00:53] sharp corner. So you can see the
[00:55] difference on screen.
[00:57] If you draw a shape in a frame, then if
[01:00] you move the frame, then the shape moves
[01:04] with the item. And indeed, if you change
[01:08] the size of the frame, then the frame is
[01:10] going to clip the image. as well as if
[01:14] you have some existing shapes on your
[01:17] drawing and you have a new frame on top
[01:21] and you resize the frame, then those
[01:24] items will become part of this frame.
[01:27] And if you already have an item on the
[01:30] screen and you add a new frame, then
[01:33] that is already automatically added to
[01:36] the frame. There are lots of values in
[01:39] creating frames. You can name parts of
[01:41] your image and of course you can drag
[01:44] items and clip items. Those are great.
[01:48] In turn, marker frames behave
[01:50] differently. So if I draw an object on a
[01:53] marker frame, nothing happens. The
[01:56] marker frame does not capture elements.
[01:59] Also, if I resize the marker frame, it
[02:03] does not capture elements. Marker frames
[02:06] are simply placeholders.
[02:09] And the problem that I was facing which
[02:12] led to this was when I created
[02:15] presentations using frames. I wasn't
[02:18] happy because if I create now here a uh
[02:23] presentation, it will automatically
[02:25] capture the elements that I'm
[02:28] highlighting and that is sometimes not
[02:31] what I want because it will create uh
[02:34] clippings is going to uh create a
[02:38] structure that I don't want. My slides I
[02:42] want only for presentations. The same
[02:44] with a print layout
[02:46] or or the same with referencing a part
[02:49] of an image. So I didn't like frames for
[02:53] this purpose and that's why I created
[02:57] the marker frame. Let's go through a
[02:59] couple of use cases of how you can use
[03:02] marker frames. I'm going to delete these
[03:05] from here. So let's first of all look at
[03:08] how do you create a marker frame. You
[03:10] click the frame tool and you select the
[03:14] toggle marker button and with that you
[03:17] can create a marker frame. Let me first
[03:20] create a fun little use case here. I'm
[03:23] going to select this part of the screen
[03:27] and I'm going to call it brain.
[03:30] Like that if I manage to spell that
[03:33] correctly. And now what I want to show
[03:36] you is if I go to a markdown document
[03:39] then I can do the following. I can
[03:42] simply reference this document and I can
[03:46] reference the frame that's called brain.
[03:50] And with that I have the brain right
[03:54] here. So you can see that using the
[03:57] marker frame I was able to highlight a
[04:00] part of the image that of course is now
[04:04] not intrusive to the image because it
[04:07] didn't clip out a part of the image. And
[04:11] in addition I have some features here.
[04:15] In particular I can hide the marker
[04:18] frames altogether. So like this I have
[04:22] my image. I have my placeholder on it.
[04:24] So I can reference this part in a
[04:27] document but it's not intrusive on this
[04:31] view. Mind you that even if the marker
[04:35] frame is visible. So you can see here
[04:37] the marker frame is visible. If I come
[04:40] here and embed the entire document here
[04:44] like that then maybe this is a bit too
[04:47] small but let's make this larger. So
[04:50] let's make this uh maybe this large. You
[04:54] can see that here the marker frame was
[04:57] not exported to the image. So that's
[05:00] another feature of marker frames that
[05:04] they do not get exported to images. So
[05:08] you can add these logical placeholders
[05:12] on your image. You can create an image
[05:14] map, but that image map only exists when
[05:19] you view it in Excel. Then you export it
[05:22] to a document or you export it and as an
[05:25] image, then that is not visible. Now,
[05:29] there are some other use cases with
[05:31] marker frames and let move on to the
[05:34] next one. So, let me show you. In last
[05:37] week's video, I showed you the printable
[05:40] layout wizard. I made some changes. So,
[05:44] you probably want to watch the printable
[05:46] layout wizard video anyway to understand
[05:49] how the script works. But then you need
[05:53] to be aware of the changes that I'm
[05:55] going to be talking about today because
[05:57] there are some exciting changes here.
[06:00] So, first of all, let me start the
[06:02] printable layout wizard. In last week's
[06:05] video, I explained how you can download
[06:07] it and how you can add it here to the
[06:10] sidebar. Now, I'm going to start this
[06:13] and I'm going to first create an A4
[06:17] page. So, I have no frames here. So, I'm
[06:20] going to create a first frame with all
[06:23] the default settings. And with that, I'm
[06:28] going to move this to the side for now.
[06:31] And so so the idea with the printable uh
[06:36] layout vizard is that you can explicitly
[06:40] define how you want to export your page.
[06:45] So where you want the page breaks to be.
[06:48] So now I created my first page like
[06:51] this. And you could see that I resized
[06:54] the A4 using the shift key. If I use the
[07:00] shift key to resize an element, then
[07:03] it's going to resize it such that the
[07:05] aspect ratio stays the same. So, this is
[07:08] still an A4 aspect ratio. This is going
[07:12] to be bigger than an A4 page, but when
[07:14] you print it with the PDF application
[07:18] you're using, you can scale it to the
[07:19] page and it's going to look good. But
[07:22] now what I want to show you is how we
[07:25] can now use the page management dialogue
[07:30] here and add a page right below this.
[07:34] And here's the one of the new features
[07:38] with the new wizard as well as with the
[07:42] new Xcolor draw version that now I can
[07:46] actually add here. Click this to rotate
[07:50] the next page. And I can add here, for
[07:53] example, you can see now I I had two
[07:56] landscape pages. And now I added a
[07:58] portrait image here. And I can add
[08:02] another portrait here. Or maybe actually
[08:05] instead of another portrait, I'm going
[08:07] to add another landscape page here. So
[08:12] now on this page, I have
[08:15] four pages all together.
[08:18] The first two are landscape, then a
[08:20] portrait, and then another landscape.
[08:23] And now if I click print, I'm not going
[08:25] to use any margin.
[08:28] I can just simply click here to print
[08:31] this. And you can see here that the
[08:33] first is indeed landscape, then
[08:36] landscape, then I have a portrait and
[08:40] another landscape page. So this already
[08:44] is pretty nice because you can have
[08:46] different orientation pages with this.
[08:50] Now of course the benefit of creating a
[08:54] print layout like this is you can create
[08:58] a print layout in your template file. I
[09:00] talked about this in last week's video
[09:03] as well. The additional feature I want
[09:06] to show you here is on the if you have
[09:10] no elements selected on the context menu
[09:14] for the canvas, you can actually hide
[09:17] the frame titles only. And with this I
[09:21] get a cleaner look. I can also select
[09:24] all of these frames and maybe lock them.
[09:28] And then they are not going to be I'm
[09:31] first going to group them and I'm going
[09:33] to lock them. And this way these are not
[09:35] in the way when I'm drawing but they set
[09:38] the print area for this page. And of
[09:41] course if you don't want to say the
[09:43] print area you can even hide the mark
[09:47] hide the marker frames and then they're
[09:51] not visible at all. So you have this
[09:54] fine grained control over do you want to
[09:57] see the page numbers or not or do you
[09:59] want to see the frames or not. And in
[10:02] all of this I highly recommend
[10:05] grouping and locking your page layout in
[10:08] your template. So it's not in the way as
[10:11] you're using your drawing. But there's
[10:15] more. So let me just show you this. So
[10:19] now let's move on to create a
[10:21] presentation. So with the presentation
[10:25] I'm going to just create with the frame
[10:28] tool with the
[10:30] marker frames turned on. I'm going to uh
[10:34] start to create couple of um
[10:39] pages here. So this is going to be page
[10:43] one. And let's just show the the titles
[10:46] as well. So show title frames. Then I'm
[10:49] going to create uh maybe
[10:53] page two or slide two here. Then this is
[10:56] going to be uh slide three for example.
[11:00] And then I'm going to come here to uh
[11:04] create uh slide four like this. And
[11:07] maybe I'm going to have uh this as a
[11:11] slide as a slide five slide six. So you
[11:15] can see I'm adding these slides and the
[11:18] huge benefit here is items don't start
[11:21] to get added to the frame. So it doesn't
[11:24] create a mess. If now I start the uh
[11:29] slideshow then you can see here that
[11:32] this was my first frame. This is my
[11:35] second. This is my third. This is my
[11:38] fourth. This strip was my fifth. But of
[11:42] course the screen layout it's going to
[11:45] be centered. And then this was my sixth
[11:49] uh slide. So you can see that I can use
[11:52] these to actually create my
[11:56] presentation. So that's already good as
[11:59] I talked about it last week and as it
[12:01] works with the slideshow script, you can
[12:04] just rename frames and then the sequence
[12:07] is going to change. But what I want to
[12:09] show you and I think this is the last
[12:12] bit I want to show you and then there's
[12:14] one more small remark uh for you to
[12:18] understand how you use this is now if I
[12:22] click on the printable layout wizard I
[12:26] can actually print these pages and the
[12:31] new feature in Excel draw is it's going
[12:34] to follow the frame sizes so you can
[12:38] create a document, a PDF that has
[12:41] different sized pages. Of course, if
[12:45] this is not what you want, but instead
[12:47] you want to print these two as slides,
[12:51] that also that's also possible. So here,
[12:54] if I start the slideshow script, not
[12:57] this one. If I start the slideshow
[13:00] script, then here I can print as well.
[13:04] And if I print my slideshow, then it's
[13:08] going to be printed on uh 16 by9
[13:13] pages. So you can see here that these
[13:15] are proper slides. So you have multiple
[13:18] printout options. But this was already
[13:21] available. The new thing here is how you
[13:26] can now print different sized pages. And
[13:30] this gives you super flexibility in how
[13:34] you can export your excolro drawing. The
[13:38] final bit I wanted to show you and let
[13:40] me just delete all of these frames. If
[13:43] you don't have this script sele elements
[13:46] of type, I recommend
[13:49] downloading it. It's a great tool
[13:51] because this way I could select all the
[13:53] frames and get rid of them. But what I
[13:56] want to show you is if you have a normal
[13:58] frame.
[14:01] So I'm going to draw a traditional frame
[14:04] with elements inside.
[14:07] So you can see this frame contains
[14:09] elements. If I toggle this to become a
[14:14] marker frame, then it will hold on to
[14:18] its elements. I had this dilemma. Should
[14:21] it let go of the elements or should it
[14:23] hold on to the elements? I decided that
[14:27] if you change the frame type, it could
[14:29] be a mistake and you want to change it
[14:32] back. It should actually retain the
[14:35] elements. Of course, at any time you can
[14:38] remove all elements from the frame and
[14:41] from then on your frame moves by itself.
[14:44] But this is something to uh keep in
[14:47] mind. I see these three big use cases.
[14:52] setting up printable layouts,
[14:55] referencing parts of images, and using
[14:58] it in the slideshow script to mark off
[15:00] the slides without creating frames. And
[15:04] of course, with the opportunity to once
[15:07] you have your slideshow, let's just
[15:10] quickly create this um slideshow
[15:14] mockup here uh like this. So, you have a
[15:18] slideshow like this.
[15:20] Um,
[15:22] of course this ruins your image. But as
[15:25] we discussed, when I export it, it's not
[15:28] going to be visible. And if I hide the
[15:33] marker frames, then they are going to be
[15:37] still there. So I can still run my
[15:39] presentation.
[15:41] So here you go. If I start the
[15:43] presentation, of course, it's going to
[15:46] present. But
[15:49] essentially they are not visible.
[15:52] They're not in the way. And of course at
[15:54] any time you can bring them back and see
[15:56] them. So this makes this overlay for
[16:01] print layouts, for presentations, for
[16:03] image references, I think, a much better
[16:06] experience. So hope you enjoy it. Let me
[16:09] know in the comments and yeah, let me
[16:12] know how it goes. Thank you. ๐Ÿ“„ **Full text:** ![[Full Document Contents/Articles/Obsidian Excalidraw A Guide to Marker Frames.md|Obsidian Excalidraw: A Guide to Marker Frames by YouTube]] ## Highlights - what I want because it will create uh clippings is going to uh create a structure that I don't want. My slides I want only for presentations. The same with a print layout or or the same with referencing a part of an image. So I didn't like frames for this purpose and that's why I created the marker frame. Let's go through a couple of use cases of how you can use ([View Highlight](https://read.readwise.io/read/01krbp266a0a0zc3bmg79apqgs)) - Tags: ๐Ÿ‘ป ai highlighted - part of the image that of course is now not intrusive to the image because it didn't clip out a part of the image. And in addition I have some features here. In particular I can hide the marker frames altogether. So like this I have my image. I have my placeholder on it. So I can reference this part in a document but it's not intrusive on this ([View Highlight](https://read.readwise.io/read/01krbp266kw6esfbetpdvdkedh)) - Tags: ๐Ÿ‘ป ai highlighted - view. Mind you that even if the marker frame is visible. So you can see here the marker frame is visible. If I come here and embed the entire document here like that then maybe this is a bit too small but let's make this larger. So let's make this uh maybe this large. You can see that here the marker frame was not exported to the image. So that's ([View Highlight](https://read.readwise.io/read/01krbp266vz4gdx9r6p28c4gn8)) - Tags: ๐Ÿ‘ป ai highlighted
