Rather than manually reviewing her journals for an annual review, she developed a systematic approach combining video transcription and AI analysis to extract insights about recurring patterns in her thinking and behavior. The technical process involved reading journals aloud on camera (5 hours of footage), transcribing via DaVinci Resolve (resulting in 317KB of text from 3GB of video), then using Claude AI with custom psychoanalytical frameworks. The AI identified core patterns like "wanting to be visible but afraid to show up" and using self-devaluation as a protection strategy. This represents a novel application of second brain methodology to personal reflection, where external tools help process internal experiences that are difficult to analyze objectively when you're living them. ## ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Notes #### โฑ๏ธ [00:00](https://youtu.be/zNHfBKhuhcE?t=0) โ€” [H1] Introduction and Setup - Key idea: Project manager becomes second brain case study subject - Evidence: "Today, the project manager becomes the second brain case study" #### โฑ๏ธ [00:30](https://youtu.be/zNHfBKhuhcE?t=30) โ€” [H2] The Core Problem - Key idea: Had data but couldn't extract knowledge from handwritten journals - Evidence: "I had all this data about my own life, but I couldn't extract the knowledge" #### โฑ๏ธ [01:15](https://youtu.be/zNHfBKhuhcE?t=75) โ€” [H3] Digital Clutter Parallel - Key idea: Personal journals became like digital clutter without distillation - Evidence: "If you can't distill it into something useful, this is just digital clutter" #### โฑ๏ธ [02:00](https://youtu.be/zNHfBKhuhcE?t=120) โ€” [H2] AI Coaching Inspiration - Key idea: Referenced Thiago's NotebookLM experiment with life coaching - Evidence: "If AI could coach him on his business, maybe it could help me see what I couldn't see about myself" #### โฑ๏ธ [02:45](https://youtu.be/zNHfBKhuhcE?t=165) โ€” [H3] The Transcription Challenge - Key idea: OCR wouldn't work for messy handwriting, needed creative solution - Evidence: "Optical character recognition would never handle my messy Russian handwriting" #### โฑ๏ธ [03:30](https://youtu.be/zNHfBKhuhcE?t=210) โ€” [H2] Video-Based Processing Solution - Key idea: Reading journals aloud on camera for transcription and emotional processing - Evidence: "When I was on camera, there was nowhere to hide from what I actually wrote" #### โฑ๏ธ [04:15](https://youtu.be/zNHfBKhuhcE?t=255) โ€” [H3] Technical Specifications - Key idea: 5 hours of video became 317KB of searchable text via DaVinci Resolve - Evidence: "3 GB of video into 317 kilobytes of my inner life" #### โฑ๏ธ [05:00](https://youtu.be/zNHfBKhuhcE?t=300) โ€” [H3] Alternative Transcription Tools - Key idea: Multiple options available including Google Docs voice typing and Whisper Flow - Evidence: "Google Docs has voice typing builtin... Alysia from 40 Labs just shared a fascinating experiment where she used AI to analyze an entire year of handwritten journals, uncovering insights she couldn't see on her own. Her process combines video transcription (reading journals aloud) with Claude AI's custom psychoanalytical frameworks. The result? Clear identification of behavioral patterns like "wanting to be visible but afraid to show up" - complete with chronological evidence from her own words. This isn't just digital narcissism; it's practical application of second brain methodology to personal growth. When we externalize our thinking and give it structure, we can finally see what we're too close to understand. **Try This:** Start with just one month of journal entries. Record yourself reading them, transcribe using any tool (even Google Docs voice typing), then ask AI to identify recurring themes. I'm a
[00:06] project [music] manager at 40 Labs.
[00:08] Today, the project manager becomes the
[00:10] second brain case study. In this video,
[00:13] I'm going to show you how I used AI to
[00:15] analyze a year of journal entries from
[00:18] handwritten notebooks to insights I
[00:20] couldn't see on my own. You'll see the
[00:22] exact process, the tools, and why I had
[00:25] to make this video to complete my
[00:27] transformation. By December 2025, I had
[00:30] four notebooks filled with my
[00:31] handwritten journal entries, a whole
[00:34] year of thoughts, patterns, struggles,
[00:36] raw material sitting on my shelf. But
[00:39] when it came time to do my annual
[00:40] review, I had no idea what was in them.
[00:43] I had all this data about my own life,
[00:46] but I couldn't extract the knowledge.
[00:48] This is exactly the problem we talk
[00:50] about in building a second brain
[00:51] community. [music] You capture
[00:53] information, you organize it, but if you
[00:55] can't distill it into something useful,
[00:57] this is just digital clutter. Except
[01:00] [music] this time, the clutter was my
[01:02] own mind. And that's when I remembered
[01:05] Thiago's video on how he tested Notebook
[01:07] LM to replace his 700 hour life coach.
[01:11] And I [music] thought, if AI could coach
[01:13] him on his business, maybe it could help
[01:15] me see what I [music] couldn't see about
[01:17] myself. What if I treated my journal
[01:20] like any other second brain material?
[01:22] What if I externalized it, structured
[01:24] [music] it, and used AI to help me see
[01:26] what I was too close to understand?
[01:29] [music] I know how this sounds. I
[01:31] uploaded my diary to AI so it could
[01:33] psychoanalyze me. Yes, it's probably the
[01:36] most narcissistic thing I've ever done.
[01:39] But sometimes when you are stuck, you
[01:41] need to do something slightly ridiculous
[01:43] to get [music] unstuck. So yes, I gave
[01:46] my diary to AI. But before I could do
[01:48] that, I had a technical problem to
[01:51] solve. How do you turn hundreds of
[01:53] handwritten pages into something AI can
[01:55] actually work with? I could scan them,
[01:58] but optical character recognition would
[02:00] never handle my messy Russian
[02:02] handwriting. I could also type
[02:04] everything out, but that would be
[02:05] [music] no fun. The solution was obvious
[02:07] to me. I'm a film nerd and video has
[02:10] always been my way of processing
[02:12] difficult things. That's [music] why I
[02:14] decided to read my journals out loud and
[02:16] record the whole thing. When I was on
[02:19] camera, there was nowhere to hide from
[02:21] what I actually wrote. Some entries were
[02:23] intense, some entries were boring, some
[02:26] were funny. I was laughing at myself.
[02:28] Sometimes I was laughing with myself.
[02:31] Sometimes I felt happy that certain days
[02:33] were over.
[02:36] 5 hours later, I had 5 [music] hours of
[02:39] footage. I uploaded it to Da Vinci
[02:41] Resolve, which I use for video editing,
[02:44] and it [music] transcribed 3 GB of video
[02:46] into 317 kilobytes of my inner life.
[02:50] [music]
[02:50] And look, you don't have to use Dainci
[02:52] Resolve. Of course, there are simpler
[02:54] options. Google Docs has voice typing
[02:57] builtin. If you are on Mac, I personally
[02:59] use Whisper Flow, which is $15 a month
[03:02] and adapts to whatever I'm writing. If
[03:05] you're not sure what's best for your
[03:06] needs, I created a summary of all
[03:09] existing transcription tools together
[03:11] with my step-by-step process. [music]
[03:13] You'll find the link in the description.
[03:15] But making my problems searchable did
[03:17] not solve them. I needed structure.
[03:20] [music] So I opened Claude. I used the
[03:22] deep research feature to study
[03:24] psychoanalysis frameworks, particularly
[03:27] Yian approach. From that research, I
[03:29] created a web pager on how to run a
[03:32] psychoanalytical sessions. [music] Then
[03:34] I created a new project in Claude and I
[03:36] attached that document [music] to the
[03:38] project knowledge and I wrote custom
[03:40] instructions. You are my psychoanalyst.
[03:43] [music] Step one, ask me to provide
[03:45] journal entries. Step two, ask about my
[03:48] goal for this session. [music] Step
[03:50] three, analyze entries and identify
[03:53] recurring patterns. Step four, run a Q&A
[03:56] session, asking questions one at a time.
[03:59] Step five, create a chronological
[04:01] archive of main events. Step six,
[04:04] [music]
[04:04] create a comprehensive analysis
[04:06] document.
[04:09] And then I started reading it. [music]
[04:11] And that's when things got quite
[04:14] uncomfortable. You want to be visible,
[04:17] but you are afraid to show up. Your
[04:19] protection strategy is to create
[04:21] something and then devaluate yourself
[04:23] before the world can. And then it quoted
[04:25] my journal entries listing every time
[04:28] that happened chronologically. All those
[04:30] scattered thoughts, all those repeating
[04:33] patterns reduced down to one core
[04:36] insight I couldn't see on my own
[04:38] probably for years. This is what
[04:40] distilling means to me. When [music] I
[04:42] externalize my thinking and give it
[04:44] structure, I can see what I couldn't see
[04:46] on my own. I hide behind my work. I hide
[04:50] behind [music] the screen. And this
[04:51] video is the opposite of that. That's
[04:54] what express [music] means to me, being
[04:56] witnessed.
[05:02] If that resonated with you, watch how
[05:04] Lauren uses journaling techniques to
[05:06] navigate her life. Her story might give
[05:08] you ideas for your own journey.
