Cammy McNamera's approach offers a blueprint worth following. She maintains client website backups for potential returns, answers her phone, and positions herself as a team member rather than a vendor. The result? Clients consistently return after trying impersonal agencies. The lesson for our community: use AI to handle the technical heavy lifting, but invest that saved time in building stronger client relationships. In an increasingly automated world, the personal touch becomes your strongest competitive advantage. **Key Takeaway:** Combine AI efficiency with human warmth for sustainable freelance success. I'm your host
[00:04] Eric Caravac. Today's episode features a
[00:07] segment from my interview with Cammy
[00:09] McNamera. Cammy is a freelance web
[00:12] designer and author of the web designer
[00:14] habits newsletter. She provides great
[00:17] advice for web professionals.
[00:20] Check out the entire interview over on
[00:22] our wpmin plus podcast. Visit
[00:25] thewpmin.com
[00:27] to learn more.
[00:30] I congratulate you on be able to being
[00:32] able to, you know, maintain your client
[00:34] base and continue growing it through the
[00:36] pandemic, through all that because I I
[00:39] think when you create that personal
[00:41] relationship with a client, right, they
[00:42] they value what you do and they they
[00:44] trust your advice. I think that that is
[00:46] kind of the key to getting them to come
[00:48] back even when
[00:50] >> they're going through a rough time. you
[00:51] know that I I I I applaud you for you
[00:55] know understanding that and and you know
[00:58] giving them a a chance to kind of come
[01:01] back and you know get through that tough
[01:03] time and and then you know
[01:05] >> yeah when a client if when a client does
[01:08] let's say a client gets a new provider
[01:10] and this will happen sometimes because I
[01:13] only offer web design I'm not offering
[01:16] uh s search engine optimization packages
[01:20] and a lot of times the client client
[01:21] will move on, hire an SEO company, and
[01:24] then that company will want to redesign
[01:27] their website. And I can't tell you how
[01:29] many times a client has done that. And I
[01:31] always make a backup of clients website
[01:34] when they leave me, throw it into
[01:36] Dropbox, and keep it in case they ever
[01:39] want to come back. And sure enough, you
[01:41] know, half the time, two years later,
[01:43] they're like, "Cammy, this is not
[01:45] working. Can we come back?" And it's
[01:48] like, "Sure." you know, so that does
[01:51] happen all the time and I really do
[01:52] think it's the the personal relationship
[01:55] and you know, I still pick up the phone
[01:58] if somebody calls me. Um, you know, I
[02:02] try to run the business like I am part
[02:06] of their team without being their
[02:08] employee. So, I think that's key as
[02:11] well.
[02:11] >> Yeah, that that's um boy, picking up the
[02:13] phone. I dread doing it, but I still do
[02:16] it when when the phone rings. Yeah, I do
[02:18] too. Now, I don't do it for unknown
[02:20] numbers, but I try to get my clients
[02:23] names in there and when they do call me,
[02:26] um, texting is a big black hole. So,
[02:28] they've kind of learned not to do that
[02:30] because then they don't end up on my
[02:32] task list and a few things like that.
[02:34] But I think people really appreciate
[02:37] that in this day and time because they
[02:39] just don't they don't get that level of
[02:42] service, especially from, you know, tech
[02:45] things that they subscribe to or
[02:48] they're, you know, more and more it's
[02:50] all ticketing and um the average
[02:53] business owner in my clientele just
[02:56] doesn't have time for that.
[02:57] >> Yeah, that that's a good point. I mean,
[02:59] we even like with some of the larger
[03:01] agencies. I mean, you know, I' I've
[03:03] gotten clients because their agency
[03:05] wouldn't look at their problem for a
[03:08] week. So, you know, what are they
[03:10] supposed to do in the meantime if
[03:12] something's broken? Um, you know, well,
[03:13] I'll get back to it next week. Well, I'm
[03:15] losing sales. I'm losing conversions,
[03:18] >> you know? Right.
[03:19] >> So, so that personal touch, I I think
[03:21] even with everything we do with AI these
[03:23] days, yeah, the personal touch is what's
[03:25] going to set all of us apart, I think.
[03:28] And and if you can continue to do that,
[03:30] then you know, you're going to survive
[03:31] um you know, the great bot uprising of
[03:34] 2026.
[03:36] >> It's true. And and if you're harnessing
[03:38] it to help you with I use it a lot to
[03:41] help run my business. I use it for
[03:43] coding errors. I, you know, just I use
[03:46] it to, you know, help me figure out
[03:49] using Zapier, things like that. So it
[03:53] definitely is something to take
[03:54] advantage of. Now, you know, it might be
[03:57] different later.
[03:58] >> Yeah. I mean, the coding aspect of it, I
[04:00] mean, it has helped me tremendously. I
[04:02] get things done so much faster. I have a
[04:04] faster start on my projects, which I
[04:07] think gives me more time to work with
[04:09] clients and actually
[04:11] >> do some of the things that I read in the
[04:12] web designer habits newsletter that you
[04:15] send out every week,
[04:16] >> which I I I I encourage everybody to
[04:19] look at this. It's um
[04:20] webdesignerhabits.com,
[04:22] right?
[04:23] >> Yes. you can sign up right there and
[04:25] I'll hit your inbox with just one tiny
[04:28] tip for the week. It's something that uh
[04:31] they're they're all usually easy to do.
[04:34] Some are bigger tasks than others, but
[04:38] um they are things I practice. And part
[04:41] of having the newsletter is helping me
[04:44] manage my own business and reminding
[04:47] myself every week of all these habits
[04:49] that I really need to hone in on to have
[04:53] a good workday. I think so much of what
[04:56] we think about as web designers is being
[04:59] a designer and being good at coding and
[05:02] all the things that go along with that.
[05:04] But if you're a freelancer running your
[05:06] own business and you are struggling day
[05:09] in and day out to just make it through
[05:11] the day, having a small little habit
[05:14] that can help you make make it easier is
[05:17] something that I really um take to heart
[05:20] myself. [[3. She maintains client website backups for potential returns, answers her phone, and positions herself as a team member rather than a vendor. The result? Clients consistently return after trying impersonal agencies. The lesson for our community: use AI to handle the technical heavy lifting, but invest that saved time in building stronger client relationships. In an increasingly automated world, the personal touch becomes your strongest competitive advantage. **Key Takeaway:** Combine AI efficiency with human warmth for sustainable freelance success. I'm your host
[00:04] Eric Caravac. Today's episode features a
[00:07] segment from my interview with Cammy
[00:09] McNamera. Cammy is a freelance web
[00:12] designer and author of the web designer
[00:14] habits newsletter. She provides great
[00:17] advice for web professionals.
[00:20] Check out the entire interview over on
[00:22] our wpmin plus podcast. Visit
[00:25] thewpmin.com
[00:27] to learn more.
[00:30] I congratulate you on be able to being
[00:32] able to, you know, maintain your client
[00:34] base and continue growing it through the
[00:36] pandemic, through all that because I I
[00:39] think when you create that personal
[00:41] relationship with a client, right, they
[00:42] they value what you do and they they
[00:44] trust your advice. I think that that is
[00:46] kind of the key to getting them to come
[00:48] back even when
[00:50] >> they're going through a rough time. you
[00:51] know that I I I I applaud you for you
[00:55] know understanding that and and you know
[00:58] giving them a a chance to kind of come
[01:01] back and you know get through that tough
[01:03] time and and then you know
[01:05] >> yeah when a client if when a client does
[01:08] let's say a client gets a new provider
[01:10] and this will happen sometimes because I
[01:13] only offer web design I'm not offering
[01:16] uh s search engine optimization packages
[01:20] and a lot of times the client client
[01:21] will move on, hire an SEO company, and
[01:24] then that company will want to redesign
[01:27] their website. And I can't tell you how
[01:29] many times a client has done that. And I
[01:31] always make a backup of clients website
[01:34] when they leave me, throw it into
[01:36] Dropbox, and keep it in case they ever
[01:39] want to come back. And sure enough, you
[01:41] know, half the time, two years later,
[01:43] they're like, "Cammy, this is not
[01:45] working. Can we come back?" And it's
[01:48] like, "Sure." you know, so that does
[01:51] happen all the time and I really do
[01:52] think it's the the personal relationship
[01:55] and you know, I still pick up the phone
[01:58] if somebody calls me. Um, you know, I
[02:02] try to run the business like I am part
[02:06] of their team without being their
[02:08] employee. So, I think that's key as
[02:11] well.
[02:11] >> Yeah, that that's um boy, picking up the
[02:13] phone. I dread doing it, but I still do
[02:16] it when when the phone rings. Yeah, I do
[02:18] too. Now, I don't do it for unknown
[02:20] numbers, but I try to get my clients
[02:23] names in there and when they do call me,
[02:26] um, texting is a big black hole. So,
[02:28] they've kind of learned not to do that
[02:30] because then they don't end up on my
[02:32] task list and a few things like that.
[02:34] But I think people really appreciate
[02:37] that in this day and time because they
[02:39] just don't they don't get that level of
[02:42] service, especially from, you know, tech
[02:45] things that they subscribe to or
[02:48] they're, you know, more and more it's
[02:50] all ticketing and um the average
[02:53] business owner in my clientele just
[02:56] doesn't have time for that.
[02:57] >> Yeah, that that's a good point. I mean,
[02:59] we even like with some of the larger
[03:01] agencies. I mean, you know, I' I've
[03:03] gotten clients because their agency
[03:05] wouldn't look at their problem for a
[03:08] week. So, you know, what are they
[03:10] supposed to do in the meantime if
[03:12] something's broken? Um, you know, well,
[03:13] I'll get back to it next week. Well, I'm
[03:15] losing sales. I'm losing conversions,
[03:18] >> you know? Right.
[03:19] >> So, so that personal touch, I I think
[03:21] even with everything we do with AI these
[03:23] days, yeah, the personal touch is what's
[03:25] going to set all of us apart, I think.
[03:28] And and if you can continue to do that,
[03:30] then you know, you're going to survive
[03:31] um you know, the great bot uprising of
[03:34] 2026.
[03:36] >> It's true. And and if you're harnessing
[03:38] it to help you with I use it a lot to
[03:41] help run my business. I use it for
[03:43] coding errors. I, you know, just I use
[03:46] it to, you know, help me figure out
[03:49] using Zapier, things like that. So it
[03:53] definitely is something to take
[03:54] advantage of. Now, you know, it might be
[03:57] different later.
[03:58] >> Yeah. I mean, the coding aspect of it, I
[04:00] mean, it has helped me tremendously. I
[04:02] get things done so much faster. I have a
[04:04] faster start on my projects, which I
[04:07] think gives me more time to work with
[04:09] clients and actually
[04:11] >> do some of the things that I read in the
[04:12] web designer habits newsletter that you
[04:15] send out every week,
[04:16] >> which I I I I encourage everybody to
[04:19] look at this. It's um
[04:20] webdesignerhabits.com,
[04:22] right?
[04:23] >> Yes. you can sign up right there and
[04:25] I'll hit your inbox with just one tiny
[04:28] tip for the week. It's something that uh
[04:31] they're they're all usually easy to do.
[04:34] Some are bigger tasks than others, but
[04:38] um they are things I practice. And part
[04:41] of having the newsletter is helping me
[04:44] manage my own business and reminding
[04:47] myself every week of all these habits
[04:49] that I really need to hone in on to have
[04:53] a good workday. I think so much of what
[04:56] we think about as web designers is being
[04:59] a designer and being good at coding and
[05:02] all the things that go along with that.
[05:04] But if you're a freelancer running your
[05:06] own business and you are struggling day
[05:09] in and day out to just make it through
[05:11] the day, having a small little habit
[05:14] that can help you make make it easier is
[05:17] something that I really um take to heart
[05:20] myself. ## Highlights - mean, it has helped me tremendously.
