The speaker identifies two main issues: first, the influx of newcomers claiming to have discovered revolutionary techniques for appearing in ChatGPT when they're actually describing basic SEO practices like optimized headlines and keyword-rich URLs. This creates unnecessary fear and confusion in the market. The second major concern involves self-ranking listicle tactics, where companies create "best of" lists ranking themselves first among competitors. While this approach currently works with some LLMs due to their relative immaturity, it represents manipulative spam that undermines user trust. The speaker warns that such tactics, including prompt injections and hidden text techniques, risk future penalties as search engines adapt their spam policies. The expert emphasizes that fundamental SEO practices continue to work effectively across different LLMs without requiring specialized "GEO" techniques, suggesting the industry focus on proven methods rather than potentially harmful shortcuts. ## ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Notes #### โฑ๏ธ [00:00](https://youtu.be/FkgLaqMUl-4?t=0) โ€” [H1] Overhyped GEO tactics and influx of newcomers - Key idea: Many people are rebranding basic SEO as revolutionary GEO techniques - Evidence: "Secret sauce for appearing in ChatGPT... optimized headlines using keywords in the URL" #### โฑ๏ธ [00:30](https://youtu.be/FkgLaqMUl-4?t=30) โ€” [H2] Fear-based marketing vocabulary - Key idea: New vocabulary creates artificial urgency and confusion - Evidence: "Made to create this sense of fear and urgency in people" #### โฑ๏ธ [01:00](https://youtu.be/FkgLaqMUl-4?t=60) โ€” [H2] Fundamental SEO practices work across LLMs - Key idea: Traditional SEO methods remain effective without special modifications - Evidence: "Content I write using same fundamental SEO best practices appears in all different LLMs" #### โฑ๏ธ [01:30](https://youtu.be/FkgLaqMUl-4?t=90) โ€” [H1] Self-ranking listicle tactics - Key idea: Companies create lists ranking themselves first among competitors - Evidence: "Listing what's the best SEO agency... having a blog post where you rank yourself number one" #### โฑ๏ธ [02:00](https://youtu.be/FkgLaqMUl-4?t=120) โ€” [H3] Pay-to-play manipulation schemes - Key idea: Networks of sites cite each other in coordinated ranking manipulation - Evidence: "Bunch of different blogs... ranking all kinds of companies... citing each other" #### โฑ๏ธ [02:30](https://youtu.be/FkgLaqMUl-4?t=150) โ€” [H2] Short-term effectiveness, long-term spam - Key idea: These tactics work temporarily but represent manipulative spam - Evidence: "LLMs in some cases are too new and too dumb to understand this is highly manipulated" #### โฑ๏ธ [03:00](https://youtu.be/FkgLaqMUl-4?t=180) โ€” [H2] Trust erosion from self-promotion - Key idea: Self-ranking damages user trust and appears scammy - Evidence: "Doesn't instill a lot of trust... makes the company sound a little bit scammy" #### โฑ๏ธ [03:30](https://youtu.be/FkgLaqMUl-4?t=210) โ€” [H1] Warning about future penalties - Key idea: Current tactics may trigger future spam policies and penalties - Evidence: "Google for 25 years has created spam policies to patch that up" #### โฑ๏ธ [04:00](https://youtu.be/FkgLaqMUl-4?t=240) โ€” [H3] Prompt injection risks - Key idea: Hidden text and prompt injection techniques are particularly dangerous - Evidence: "White text on white background with prompt injections" #### โฑ๏ธ [04:30](https://youtu.be/FkgLaqMUl-4?t=270) โ€” [H1] Risk of permanent AI search exclusion - Key idea: Aggressive tactics could result in complete loss of AI search visibility - Evidence: "Don't want to get your site penalized... don't appear in AI search ever again" ## ๐Ÿ“š References - [YouTube Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkgLaqMUl-4) - Will Reynolds presentations on manipulative ranking tactics ## ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Paraphrase - Many supposed "GEO experts" are simply repackaging basic SEO fundamentals like keyword optimization and proper titles as revolutionary new techniques for AI search - Self-ranking listicle schemes where companies rank themselves #1 in "best of" lists may work temporarily but damage trust and risk future penalties - Traditional SEO best practices continue to perform well across different AI platforms without requiring specialized "GEO" modifications ## ๐Ÿ“ฐ Newsletter **SEO Reality Check: Why "GEO" Tactics May Be Setting You Up for Failure** The SEO world is buzzing with "Generative Engine Optimization" promises, but are these tactics worth the hype? You
[01:42] know, LLMs in some cases are too new and
[01:45] too dumb to understand that this is
[01:46] highly manipulated and and influenced
[01:48] and people are putting themselves as
[01:50] number one and it's appearing in LLMs as
[01:52] such. So, for now it might be working.
[01:54] Um, and I think Will Reynolds actually
[01:56] did a great presentation on this a few
[01:57] times throughout the year where he
[01:59] talked about yes, even though it's
[02:00] working, it doesn't mean that it's
[02:01] instilling trust in your users,
[02:03] especially if your clients are going to
[02:05] your blog and seeing that you're calling
[02:06] yourself number one. For me, that
[02:08] doesn't instill a lot of trust in the
[02:10] company. It just makes the company sound
[02:11] a little bit scammy. So, I'd be really
[02:13] careful even if something works for AI
[02:15] search right now. It doesn't mean it's
[02:16] going to work next year. It doesn't mean
[02:18] that Google is going to, you know, not
[02:20] create new policies and spam policies
[02:22] and penalties and everything around
[02:23] these types of tactics because when
[02:25] everybody jumps on the bandwagon and
[02:26] does the same thing, that's not good for
[02:28] users. Google for 25 years has created
[02:30] spam policies to patch that up. So, I'd
[02:32] be very very careful. Um, you know, a
[02:34] lot of people are putting white text on
[02:35] a white background with prompt
[02:36] injections and things like this. Just be
[02:38] careful. Um, what you don't want is to
[02:40] get your site penalized in such a way
[02:42] that you don't appear in AI search ever
[02:43] again because you tried to do this in
[02:45] year one. So that's just my advice. [[3. You
[01:42] know, LLMs in some cases are too new and
[01:45] too dumb to understand that this is
[01:46] highly manipulated and and influenced
[01:48] and people are putting themselves as
[01:50] number one and it's appearing in LLMs as
[01:52] such. So, for now it might be working.
[01:54] Um, and I think Will Reynolds actually
[01:56] did a great presentation on this a few
[01:57] times throughout the year where he
[01:59] talked about yes, even though it's
[02:00] working, it doesn't mean that it's
[02:01] instilling trust in your users,
[02:03] especially if your clients are going to
[02:05] your blog and seeing that you're calling
[02:06] yourself number one. For me, that
[02:08] doesn't instill a lot of trust in the
[02:10] company. It just makes the company sound
[02:11] a little bit scammy. So, I'd be really
[02:13] careful even if something works for AI
[02:15] search right now. It doesn't mean it's
[02:16] going to work next year. It doesn't mean
[02:18] that Google is going to, you know, not
[02:20] create new policies and spam policies
[02:22] and penalties and everything around
[02:23] these types of tactics because when
[02:25] everybody jumps on the bandwagon and
[02:26] does the same thing, that's not good for
[02:28] users. Google for 25 years has created
[02:30] spam policies to patch that up. So, I'd
[02:32] be very very careful. Um, you know, a
[02:34] lot of people are putting white text on
[02:35] a white background with prompt
[02:36] injections and things like this. Just be
[02:38] careful. Um, what you don't want is to
[02:40] get your site penalized in such a way
[02:42] that you don't appear in AI search ever
[02:43] again because you tried to do this in
[02:45] year one. So that's just my advice. ## Highlights - What was one 2025 search trend you think was total BS, and what should we be paying attention to instead of that BS hype? I think it's been fascinating, if anything, to watch, number one, an influx of new people entering the space claiming that they've discovered the secret sauce for appearing in ChatGPT.
