## ๐ Main Content:
### Introduction
In this reflective note, I want to take you through my journey with WordPress, a platform I've been intimately acquainted with for many years. My experiences have led me to reevaluate my approach to website building and hosting, and I'd like to share these insights with you.
### WordPress Journey: The Early Days
I first delved into WordPress around 2005-2006, captivated by its flexibility and customization options. I used it to build various websites, including a company website for Hubsy. WordPress allowed me to create custom solutions for businesses, making it a powerful tool in my arsenal.
### Challenges with Self-Hosting
While WordPress itself remained a reliable choice for website development, the challenges of self-hosting became increasingly burdensome. As a solo webmaster responsible for managing servers, I encountered the daunting world of malware and relentless bot attacks. These security issues made self-hosting less appealing, leading me to reassess my choices.
### Squarespace and Its Limitations
Seeking a more managed hosting solution, I ventured into Squarespace, drawn by its user-friendly website building capabilities. However, I soon discovered limitations in its e-commerce functionality, making it less than ideal for my needs. Squarespace felt like a website builder with a hastily added shopping cart system.
### Patreon and Unexpected Content Issues
On a personal front, I explored Patreon as a means to connect with supporters. While the platform initially seemed promising, I faced unexpected content issues. A guideline warning for a YouTube video raised questions about the platform's content monitoring, leaving me uncertain about its long-term suitability.
### Finding the Right Solution
Determined to find a hosting solution that would alleviate my technical headaches, I began the search anew. My goal was to focus on creating content and engaging with my audience rather than dealing with server-related issues. This led me to reevaluate my choices and prioritize hassle-free hosting solutions.
## ๐๏ธ Notes
- WordPress offers powerful customization options but self-hosting can lead to security challenges.
- Squarespace is user-friendly but lacks robust e-commerce features.
- Patreon has content monitoring concerns.
- The importance of hassle-free hosting cannot be overstated.

## Highlights
- f anybody ever asked me I'm like do not use GoDaddy like still to this day like I said I haven't done it in a long time I've not seen what they've done in a long time so maybe it's a lot better now but I don't do it WP engine is only 240 per
year it used to be a lot more than that it was like that per month for what I needed maybe maybe you don't need the features I need like Commerce and stuff I don't know but that that seems low compared to what they were when I was using them hey what's up Bez happy New Year how does Squarespace compare to Wix so Wix Wix gives you a lot more freedom with drag and drop um uh Square space really isn't I mean it is kind of drag and drop but you're you're you're relegated to boxes and
stuff it's just it's kind of a a wonky a wonky editor um I didn't like it I didn't like the experience trying to figure out what to do and how to add things you don't have a lot of freedom with the the things you can do um whereas Wicks you have a lot more freedom because you can physically move stuff where it is on the pl page but the thing as I found with Wix when I used it is that it didn't always line up exactly where you had it so you you'd have to go and it all never failed I would go in there and I would move stuff it would be
off a little bit so then I would be like okay I'll move it even though it looks like it's off on the site on the page it would look right on the site but then when I'd move it over then it stayed where I put it on the site too so it was like I could never get it consistent so that's why I didn't stick with Wix very long um also purchased admin and sight enhancement Pro um and that's for uh GoDaddy I would assume hey what's up hi Hollow hey what's up uh well so I I did uh leave um WordPress
selfhosted but now I'm on WordPress hosted wordpress.com is where I'm building the website so basically WordPress itself is hosting my website and then I just send the domain there $1,000 for me to cover multiple DNS renewals and hosting multiple websites on GoDaddy for 5 years awesome so I mean that that's cool I don't know what like maybe they've come long way since I last knew anyone that used them I mean I still know in my Circles of
people that I know that that build sites they stay the hell away from uh they stay the hell away from GoDaddy so hopefully it's working for you if it is that's awesome um but I personally I just I couldn't I I couldn't go to GoDaddy and the thing is too because even at GoDaddy a self-hosted WordPress site you're still not going to get the kind of support with WordPress that you get from somebody like WP engine or or these ones that are specifically made for hosting WordPress right so they they
don't specialize in WordPress um and and that's kind of what you want site ground moved to to start doing that now they are way more um involved in WordPress now than they were uh but still I want I don't want to have to even manage plugins and on wordpress.com I don't have to manage plugins WordPress manages all my plugins for me if I come into the like back into the plugins page the installed plugins here what you'll see
is so it says manage by host manage by host and then they auto update I don't even don't even have um didn't even have to turn all this on manage by host managed by host so everything that I put in it it turns on auto and then there's a lot of them in here that are just managed by WordPress so I don't have to do all that stuff I don't have to worry about the plugins or anything which was like one of the biggest things that I having to do um now you can turn on auto updates on uh your your your regular
WordPress as well but the the cool thing is here if you if you on on some hosts if you don't do backups on a regular basis like it's an extra service you have to pay for for me on WordPress it's included so if anything ever breaks because a word uh a plug-in auto updates and it breaks the site I can go right here into WordPress into jetpack outside of my site uh in wordpress.com cuz my site's down I can
still go in there and I can restore a backup and restore it back to just before that plug-in updated and bring the site right back online so um and I get premium support so I can contact them I I had a conversation with them because I had an issue with mail poet not sending my emails and then they found what was going on got it fixed and my um emails went out so and and I was on a chat with them a live chat at what was that like two two three o'clock in the morning my time and I was on chat with them so that's pretty awesome so
just so far the experience has been great um and like I said the site's fast it's got like they have extra caching and stuff in there and uh image optimization and I can even run ads on the on there if I want to I can turn that on um there's all these features I can come in and show you on the settings in in uh jetpack so they do backups and this is all just included with my subscription downtime
monitoring so I get an email if uh the site goes online Brute Force protection uh you can use wordpress.com login I don't want to do that because that's just I've never done that and I I don't I don't I got search and I have um instant search like if somebody wants to search something on the site I'll have a search uh icon in the the header here soon after I get that set up you can do site accelerator I don't turn this on because sometimes it messes with the CSS
files and I don't like that the site's fast enough without that I have uh media here I've got a terabyte of storage um that I can store videos which is nice so I can host the videos right here on WordPress I don't have to like my membership videos I don't have to upload them Vimeo and then take a Vimeo link and put it in here the the videos are hosted right here which is amazing and then um I can I have have all this stuff for for image carousels show comments area I don't want that in
a carousel um all this stuff for composing custom content types theme enh enhancements uh widgets post by email if I wanted to I could send an email with a post and it would post it to the site which I don't want to do so social if I wanted to have sharing buttons and stuff on there I don't do that uh and I can actually set it up to automatically share my post so when I compose a post it'll automatically send it to Facebook uh um it sends it to
Twitter uh a neighborhood or whatever that's called Next Door um I can't remember all of the different connections but I can send it to a bunch of different places and then I can I can run comments through here I don't do that I run my comments through WordPress discuss but I can turn anything off or on that I want I can put related posts after the post if I wanted to um so I could like turn this on turn this
on and it's going to show the post underneath uh the the all of my posts to go to another related content so I don't want to do that customize my SEO I've got short links on here that I can share wpm shortlinks which is cool um and then a newsletter if I wanted to run a newsletter out of this so I don't want to but if I could and I can actually charge for it I could
charge like $5 a month or I can charge per article if I wanted kind of like a uh a uh I don't remember what that site is called um that people do that uh substack substack a lot of people use substack it's basically like building your own substack and then monetize I can turn ads on and decide where they go um I can enable targeted advertising to visitors in the US I can collect payments I can get donations uh and PayPal payments so I
can set up like a donations form and all that right here in WordPress um again I'm not going to do all of that because I don't want to use that I have my own way to do that so what's up Adams exploits how's it going man happy New Year um the CEO set me up with a recurring zero payment for every two years for moderating their forms 10 years ago I have a reseller account I can host a ton of sites basically I get unlimited everything except for disc space and bandwidth C panel from from where from
WordPress or or where I know that's what it always sounds like Adam ([View Highlight](https://read.readwise.io/read/01hk7th5btjbevmrsb44pe6hfm))
- I know that that build sites they stay the hell away from uh they stay the hell away from GoDaddy so hopefully it's working for you if it is that's awesome um but I personally I just I couldn't I I couldn't go to GoDaddy and the thing is too because even at GoDaddy a self-hosted WordPress ([View Highlight](https://read.readwise.io/read/01hk7tj1vahwcqnv5s1g2n0qs5))
