However, AI-powered development tools are fundamentally disrupting WordPress's core value proposition. For two decades, WordPress solved the problem of needing to hand-code HTML and manage FTP uploads for web publishing. The platform's dominance wasn't due to superior technology but historical timing. WordPress evolved from a blogging tool built on PHP (Personal Homepage Tools), which itself began in 1994 as simple scripts for tracking homepage visitors. This created a stack of historical accidents: a blogging platform that became a website builder, running on personal homepage scripts that evolved into a programming language. The critical vulnerability is PHP's declining relevance. Modern developers gravitate toward JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, or Swift. This talent drain threatens WordPress's long-term viability, as it becomes infrastructure everyone depends on but nobody wants to maintain. While AI enables rapid website creation, potentially eliminating the need for traditional web agencies, the author argues that coding was never the primary value. Professional web developers bring creativity, experience, and strategic messaging that AI cannot replicate. The future lies in agencies pivoting from code-focused to brand-story-focused services. ## ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Notes #### โฑ๏ธ [00:00](https://youtu.be/0tFRdZWmGdc?t=0) โ€” [H1] WordPress dominance and AI threat - Key idea: WordPress runs 43% of websites globally but faces existential AI threat - Evidence: "WordPress runs 43% of websites globally, and even the White House uses WordPress" #### โฑ๏ธ [00:42](https://youtu.be/0tFRdZWmGdc?t=42) โ€” [H1] Unprecedented domain count decline - Key idea: WordPress experiencing first sustained contraction in 20-year history - Evidence: "According to Accenture, the domain count dropped 19% in 4 months" #### โฑ๏ธ [01:15](https://youtu.be/0tFRdZWmGdc?t=75) โ€” [H2] Traditional web development cost disruption - Key idea: AI eliminates the cost barrier that made WordPress attractive - Evidence: "It used to cost tens of thousands of dollars to build a website through a web design agency" #### โฑ๏ธ [01:45](https://youtu.be/0tFRdZWmGdc?t=105) โ€” [H2] WordPress ecosystem vulnerability - Key idea: Entire ecosystem built around WordPress faces disruption - Evidence: "The whole website ecosystem has been built around WordPress... plug-in developers, hosting companies" #### โฑ๏ธ [02:30](https://youtu.be/0tFRdZWmGdc?t=150) โ€” [H3] Historical context of WordPress success - Key idea: WordPress succeeded by solving hand-coding complexity, not superior technology - Evidence: "If you wanted to publish something online, you had to typically hand code HTML and upload files via FTP" #### โฑ๏ธ [03:15](https://youtu.be/0tFRdZWmGdc?t=195) โ€” [H1] PHP as fundamental weakness - Key idea: WordPress built on PHP, a language never designed for serious programming - Evidence: "PHP actually stands for Personal Homepage Tools... scripts that a guy wrote to track visitors on his own personal homepage" #### โฑ๏ธ [03:45](https://youtu.be/0tFRdZWmGdc?t=225) โ€” [H1] Talent pipeline crisis - Key idea: Developer talent has moved away from PHP to modern languages - Evidence: "Every developer under 30 is working on JavaScript, or TypeScript, or Python" #### โฑ๏ธ [04:15](https://youtu.be/0tFRdZWmGdc?t=255) โ€” [H2] Infrastructure maintenance problem - Key idea: WordPress becoming legacy infrastructure nobody wants to maintain - Evidence: "Infrastructure that everyone depends on, but nobody wants to maintain" #### โฑ๏ธ [04:45](https://youtu.be/0tFRdZWmGdc?t=285) โ€” [H3] Business owner perspective shift - Key idea: AI enables businesses to consider in-house website development - Evidence: "As a business owner with AI, you could probably think about bringing that skill in-house" #### โฑ๏ธ [05:30](https://youtu.be/0tFRdZWmGdc?t=330) โ€” [H2] Professional value beyond code - Key idea: Website quality depends on creativity and messaging, not just coding speed - Evidence: "A really good website still needs creativity and experience. In fact, WordPress
[00:05] runs 43% of websites globally, and even
[00:08] the White House uses WordPress for its
[00:10] homepage.
[00:11] Once you start looking for them, you'll
[00:13] see WordPress sites everywhere.
[00:15] But WordPress is being killed by AI.
[00:18] According to Accenture, the domain count
[00:20] dropped 19% in 4 months. And this is the
[00:23] first sustained contraction in
[00:25] WordPress's 20-year history.
[00:28] It used to cost tens of thousands of
[00:29] dollars to build a website through a web
[00:31] design agency using WordPress. But now
[00:34] somebody can vibe code up a website in
[00:36] just a few hours.
[00:38] So the obvious conclusion is that web
[00:40] agencies are also going to be destroyed,
[00:42] and everybody will just vibe code their
[00:43] own.
[00:45] But in this video, I'll explain that
[00:46] although AI is killing WordPress, I
[00:48] think web developers are safe. And quite
[00:51] paradoxically, there's probably never
[00:53] been a better time to be a web developer
[00:55] thanks to AI.
[00:57] Your website is your storefront. It's
[00:59] the place that people go when they want
[01:00] to find out a little bit more about your
[01:02] business.
[01:03] So the a good website is the first layer
[01:05] of trust.
[01:07] For 20 years, the whole website
[01:09] ecosystem has been built around
[01:10] WordPress.
[01:12] And I'm not just talking about web
[01:13] agencies here. I mean plug-in
[01:14] developers, hosting companies.
[01:16] Everyone has built up this giant
[01:18] ecosystem around WordPress.
[01:21] But WordPress didn't become the dominant
[01:22] player because it was good. It's a bit
[01:24] like Nvidia, which started out making
[01:26] graphics cards for gamers. WordPress
[01:28] actually started as a tool for making
[01:30] blogs. And back then, if you wanted to
[01:32] publish something online, you had to
[01:34] typically hand code HTML and upload
[01:37] files via FTP. Now, if that sounds
[01:40] complicated, you're right. And that's
[01:41] where sites like WordPress and Blogger
[01:44] became popular because they were an
[01:46] alternative to learning to write code.
[01:48] And that's been its value proposition
[01:50] now for 20 years. Yes, it's a bit slow,
[01:52] and sometimes the plugins would break
[01:54] things, but compared to writing it
[01:55] yourself, WordPress was a far better
[01:57] alternative.
[01:58] So, let's dig in a bit deeper to uncover
[02:00] WordPress's real problem.
[02:02] And the bigger problem, in my view, is
[02:04] that WordPress is built using a language
[02:05] called PHP.
[02:07] PHP actually stands for Personal
[02:09] Homepage Tools, and it started in 1994
[02:12] as a set of scripts that a guy wrote to
[02:14] track visitors on his own personal
[02:16] homepage.
[02:17] It was never designed to be a serious
[02:18] programming language, just kind of got
[02:20] extended and extended until it became a
[02:23] standard by accident.
[02:25] So, you've got a blogging platform that
[02:27] somehow became a website builder running
[02:30] on a personal homepage script that has
[02:32] become a programming language. The whole
[02:34] stack is held together by a a
[02:36] interesting historical accident.
[02:39] But, PHP is a dying language. Nothing
[02:41] new really gets built on it.
[02:44] The talent pipeline has moved, and these
[02:45] days every developer under 30 is working
[02:48] on JavaScript, or TypeScript, or Python,
[02:50] or if they're really cool, they're
[02:51] working on Swift.
[02:53] So, the lack of interest in PHP is the
[02:55] real reason why WordPress is dying. With
[02:58] so many websites written in WordPress,
[03:00] it's going to become the infrastructure
[03:01] that everyone depends on, but nobody
[03:03] wants to maintain.
[03:04] Now, the plugins are going to continue
[03:06] to work for a while, and it will
[03:07] probably take us a decade before
[03:08] WordPress is totally dead.
[03:11] But, the gravitational pull of modern
[03:13] development, including every AI-native
[03:15] tool that's being built right now, is
[03:17] pulling WordPress in the opposite
[03:19] direction.
[03:21] Now, let's look at it from a different
[03:22] angle. If you're in business, you
[03:23] probably haven't set aside money to
[03:25] rebuild your website. Why would you?
[03:27] It's working okay. There's no need to
[03:29] change.
[03:30] But, as a business owner with AI, you
[03:32] could probably think about bringing that
[03:34] skill in-house, and by coding up a
[03:36] reasonable-looking website in no time.
[03:38] That means you could probably ditch the
[03:40] website guy and save money, right?
[03:42] Well, no, because a really good website
[03:45] still needs creativity and experience.
[03:47] The website was never about the code. It
[03:49] was about your brand story. So, while
[03:52] the speed at which we can code website
[03:54] websites has increased enormously, what
[03:57] hasn't changed is the skill and
[03:58] creativity in communicating the right
[04:01] messages.
[04:03] A professional website developer using
[04:05] AI tools will build you a website that's
[04:07] much better than anything you can do
[04:08] yourself.
[04:09] To you it might look good enough, but to
[04:11] an experienced web developer, they see a
[04:13] clear gap.
[04:15] So, I see there's a big role for website
[04:17] agencies that specialize in this stuff.
[04:20] But, they will need to change. They'll
[04:21] need to spend much less time writing
[04:23] code and more time about creating great
[04:25] content and communicating messages that
[04:28] will resonate with with visitors on the
[04:30] website.
[04:32] So, 43% of the internet is still sitting
[04:34] on a platform that no one would choose
[04:36] today if they were starting from
[04:38] scratch.
[04:39] Now, the number won't collapse overnight
[04:40] because these things always take time.
[04:43] But, every new site that doesn't get
[04:44] built on WordPress is another nail in
[04:46] the coffin.
[04:48] And eventually, the plug-in ecosystem
[04:49] will shrink and the developer pool will
[04:51] age out.
[04:53] And in 5 or 10 years, we'll talk about
[04:54] WordPress the way we talk about Adobe
[04:56] Flash or BlackBerry or Yahoo.
[04:59] It won't die because it's bad, it will
[05:01] die because the problem that it
[05:02] originally solved doesn't exist in the
[05:04] same way that it did in the past.
[05:07] So, even if WordPress dies, there's
[05:08] still a huge place for human creativity,
[05:11] storytelling, and messaging. And that's
[05:13] the bit that AI could never do.
[05:15] Which is why I'm still optimistic that
[05:17] the best web developers are about to do
[05:19] the best work of their careers.
[05:21] I'm Dr. O'Bryan, and if you enjoy my
[05:23] content, please like and subscribe.
