## ๐ Summary
- Christopher Penn provides strategies for using AI to find "hidden jobs" that don't appear on saturated job boards like LinkedIn.
- Key approach involves using economic data (like JOLTS) to identify growing industries, then deploying AI agents to automate outreach to companies in those sectors.
- Recommends Claude Desktop with CoWork capabilities, enhanced with third-party inference providers like MiniMax for cost-effective automation.
- Emphasizes targeting mid-size businesses that rely on referrals rather than expensive job board postings.
- Bottom line: Combine data analysis with AI automation to scale personalized outreach to companies in growing sectors.
## ๐ Main Content
Penn addresses the challenge that many mid-size companies don't post jobs on expensive platforms like LinkedIn, preferring referral-based hiring. His solution combines economic data analysis with AI-powered automation.
The strategy starts with identifying growth opportunities using government data sources. In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes JOLTS (Job Openings Labor Turnover Survey) data down to the state level, showing hiring trends by industry. This data helps job seekers focus their efforts on sectors experiencing growth.
Penn recommends using AI agents rather than basic chatbots for the actual job hunting. Tools like Claude Desktop with CoWork can automate the repetitive tasks of researching companies, finding contact information, and sending personalized outreach messages. The AI can operate while the job seeker sleeps, scaling efforts beyond what's possible manually.
Cost optimization comes through third-party inference providers. Penn specifically mentions MiniMax, which offers Claude-compatible endpoints at 8% of the cost while maintaining 90% of the functionality.
The outreach approach involves demonstrating industry knowledge ("I know hiring in angular ball bearing industry in Massachusetts is up 15%") and positioning oneself as a solution to known hiring challenges. Even if companies aren't actively hiring full-time, this approach can generate consulting opportunities.

## ๐ฃ๏ธ Paraphrase
Penn's core insight is that traditional job boards miss a significant portion of opportunities because many companies can't afford or don't want to pay for premium job postings. Instead of competing in saturated markets, job seekers should use economic data to identify growing industries in their region, then deploy AI automation to systematically reach out to companies in those sectors. The key is combining data-driven targeting with AI-powered scale, while using cost optimization techniques to make the approach economically viable. This creates a competitive advantage by accessing the "hidden" job market that most job seekers never discover.

๐ค **AI-Powered Job Hunting: Finding Hidden Opportunities**
Tired of competing with hundreds of applicants on LinkedIn? Christopher Penn shares a brilliant strategy for tapping into the "hidden job market" using AI automation and economic data.
The secret sauce: Use government data like JOLTS to identify which industries are hiring in your area, then deploy Claude Desktop with CoWork to automate personalized outreach to companies in those growing sectors. Penn even shares a cost hackโuse MiniMax's third-party inference provider to get 90% of Claude's power for just 8% of the cost.
This approach targets mid-size businesses that rely on referrals rather than expensive job boards. Even if they're not actively hiring, your industry knowledge and timing might land you consulting work. It's like having a personal job-hunting robot that works while you sleep!

#### Tone of voice
- **Authoritative and instructional**: Uses definitive language ("you should," "this is where," "that's what you want to do") suggesting expertise and confidence
- **Practical and solution-oriented**: Focuses on actionable steps rather than theoretical discussion, with specific tool recommendations and pricing
### ๐ก๏ธ DARVO Analysis
No DARVO patterns detected. The content is instructional and solution-focused without defensive rhetoric or attempts to reframe criticism. Penn presents job search challenges as systemic issues rather than individual failings and positions AI automation as an empowering solution rather than deflecting responsibility.
## ๐ฏ Conclusion
Penn's strategy represents a significant evolution in job search methodology, combining economic data analysis with AI automation to access hidden job markets. The approach is particularly valuable for targeting mid-size businesses that rely on referrals rather than expensive job board postings.
The practical next steps for readers include: setting up Claude Desktop with CoWork capabilities, researching JOLTS or regional economic data for their area, identifying growing industries in their location, developing industry-specific outreach templates, and implementing cost optimization through third-party inference providers like MiniMax.
This methodology transforms job searching from a reactive, competitive process into a proactive, data-driven strategy that can operate at scale while maintaining personalization.

They hire on<br>[00:16] referrals. How do you go and find these<br>[00:18] hidden jobs?"<br>[00:20] Well, the first most obvious way to do<br>[00:23] this is a lot of companies yeah, do not<br>[00:25] post on LinkedIn because it costs you<br>[00:26] money to post on LinkedIn. Uh it does<br>[00:28] not cost money to post a job opening on<br>[00:30] indeed.com. That's why it's the largest<br>[00:33] job board on the planet because it costs<br>[00:35] no money. Now, there's a lot of garbage<br>[00:36] on there, yes, but<br>[00:39] um you can absolutely use a tool like uh<br>[00:42] chat GPT or better yet Claude desktop,<br>[00:45] uh particularly Claude co-work, uh to<br>[00:47] hunt down through those boards and look<br>[00:49] to see what's out there.<br>[00:51] Another thing that you can do is look to<br>[00:54] see in your region where there is<br>[00:57] growth. All right, so what's growing in<br>[01:00] your industry?<br>[01:01] Um<br>[01:03] depending on where you live and on what<br>[01:04] country you live in, there may be<br>[01:07] economic data that is region-specific<br>[01:10] that says like in uh for example, in the<br>[01:12] United States, uh we have a Bureau of<br>[01:15] Labor Statistics set of reports called<br>[01:18] JOLTS, Job Openings Labor Turnover<br>[01:20] Survey. And JOLTS is available by at<br>[01:25] down to the state level. So, you can<br>[01:26] look at job openings and hires uh by<br>[01:29] industry and see who which industries<br>[01:32] are tending to be doing better or worse<br>[01:33] at any given time. That can then guide<br>[01:37] you<br>[01:38] in your state, for example, um<br>[01:42] as to where the opportunities are. Uh if<br>[01:44] you know that health care or therapy or<br>[01:48] whatever is hiring in your space<br>[01:50] in your state because it's it's doing<br>[01:53] well. There's you know, increased<br>[01:55] numbers of job openings. That as an<br>[01:57] overall in industry flag, should tell<br>[01:59] you I should be spending some time<br>[02:01] there.<br>[02:02] Um look at and obviously these these are<br>[02:06] all, you know, national level data sets.<br>[02:07] There are state level data set data<br>[02:08] sets, too. Look at economic data coming<br>[02:11] out of your state or regions<br>[02:14] um<br>[02:14] principality<br>[02:16] uh data systems. Do Do they publish like<br>[02:20] who's hiring or what's hiring this<br>[02:21] month? Look at indeed.com. Um<br>[02:25] there are any number of Python libraries<br>[02:28] and other things that work with Indeed's<br>[02:31] data um<br>[02:32] officially or unofficially that allow<br>[02:34] you to extract the information and<br>[02:36] figure out where the hiring is.<br>[02:38] And then<br>[02:40] use tools like Claude Code or Claude<br>[02:42] CoWork to go and<br>[02:45] look up those companies in your<br>[02:47] geography<br>[02:48] and reach out to them programmatically<br>[02:50] and say, "Hey, you know, I I know that<br>[02:54] hiring in<br>[02:56] uh the angular ball bearing industry in<br>[02:58] in Massachusetts is up 15% this year<br>[03:01] year-over-year from the previous year<br>[03:03] and a lot of companies are struggling to<br>[03:05] to find great talent. Uh I'm uh Jack uh<br>[03:10] a specialist in angular contact ball<br>[03:12] bearings. Uh would you like to schedule<br>[03:14] a 15-minute conversation see if there<br>[03:16] are any needs I can help you fulfill<br>[03:18] because<br>[03:19] even if a company isn't hiring like for<br>[03:21] a full-time position<br>[03:23] the outreach might be enough to find you<br>[03:25] some consulting work. If you are if you<br>[03:27] know what you're doing, if you're you're<br>[03:29] actually good at what you do, and you<br>[03:31] can use tools like Claude CoWork to do<br>[03:34] the hunting for you, you can you can get<br>[03:37] a lot of mileage out of it. And you<br>[03:38] don't necessarily have to pay top dollar<br>[03:41] for<br>[03:42] um<br>[03:43] for Claude CoWork's capabilities.<br>[03:45] In Claude CoWork, there's a thing called<br>[03:48] third-party inference provider. Uh when<br>[03:50] you download the Claude desktop app, you<br>[03:52] can set up a third-party inference<br>[03:54] provider and then<br>[03:56] use it with other models. So, uh, I'm a<br>[03:59] big fan of MiniMax, the Chinese and<br>[04:02] Singapore company. They offer<br>[04:05] uh, Claude-compatible<br>[04:07] endpoints that you can use in Claude<br>[04:09] Co-work that give you<br>[04:11] 90% of the power of Claude's best models<br>[04:15] for<br>[04:17] 8% of the price.<br>[04:19] Uh, you know, you the the really nice<br>[04:21] plan costs $17 a month. Um,<br>[04:25] that would be That's That's where you<br>[04:27] want to spend your time.<br>[04:29] So,<br>[04:30] those would be my suggestions. Use the<br>[04:32] data that there's out that's out there.<br>[04:34] I would not,<br>[04:36] you know, use the regular chat.<br>[04:39] Use an agent like Claude Co-work, um,<br>[04:42] Google Antigravity, OpenAI Codex. Any of<br>[04:46] these companies that have agent<br>[04:48] existence because what you're trying to<br>[04:50] do<br>[04:52] is very templated. All right, it's very<br>[04:54] repetitive. You're going site by site,<br>[04:55] page by page, looking for stuff, looking<br>[04:57] for contact information, filling out<br>[04:59] forms.<br>[05:00] A tool like Claude Desktop, in Co-work<br>[05:02] specifically, can do that really easily<br>[05:05] and it will save you a lot of time and<br>[05:06] let you scale. You can set it up and let<br>[05:08] it run while you sleep and come back and<br>[05:11] then, you know, the next day manage any<br>[05:14] responses that you've gotten and you can<br>[05:16] spend your time that way rather than<br>[05:19] manually doing the paperwork yourself<br>[05:20] cuz paperwork is<br>[05:22] really something should should left to<br>[05:23] machines.
