([Location 126](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=126)) - What digital notes can do is help you think better. When you take notes, you explore the scope and boundaries of ideas. You think differently about things when considering how they might relate to other things. The point isn’t to stash ideas for later or to have a machine think for you, but to create a space that lets you think more effectively. ([Location 158](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=158)) - David McCullough said, “Writing is thinking. To write well is to think clearly. That’s why it’s so hard.” ([Location 178](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=178)) - thinking with digital notes boils down to three simple rules: Make short notes. Connect your notes. Nurture your notes. ([Location 192](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=192)) - My Mac’s dictionary defines a note as “a brief record of facts, topics, or thoughts, written down as an aid to memory.” ([Location 274](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=274)) - notes aren’t merely a way to record your thinking; they’re part of where thinking happens. They are the means through which you understand and make sense of things. When making notes, you’re thinking on the page and beyond, experimenting with temporary models that describe how a part of the world might work. It’s a creative, generative act of discovery and clarification. ([Location 508](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=508)) - Note-taking is when you take notes to remember what you’ve heard or read. ([Location 638](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=638)) - Note-making is something else entirely: instead of highlighting or capturing ideas from an existing source—a text, lecture, video, etc.—you write down what you’re thinking to make sense of your ideas. ([Location 641](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=641)) - you think by writing things down. ([Location 645](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=645)) - Evergreen notes should be atomic; that is, each note should focus on one idea. They should be concept-oriented, meaning each note should focus on a concept rather than a book, author, project, etc. They should be densely linked; that is, they should have lots of links to other notes. You should resist the urge to layer on them a top-down structure, since they might be relevant to more than one category. You should write them for yourself, not for publication. (Of course, they can serve as the basis for things you publish later.) ([Location 662](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=662)) - You’re not thinking and then writing; you’re thinking as you write. ([Location 702](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=702)) - MVNs provide the key data with enough context to tell you what they’re about. Besides a clear name, they often include a call to action, next steps, and a reference to where you came across the idea. ([Location 708](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=708)) - One of the hardest things about hypertext note-taking is getting used to the idea that you’re not writing a single monolithic note but a set of related notes. ([Location 1060](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=1060)) - The best way to think about the system’s components is to lay them out according to the role they play in one of six sequential stages. They are the following: Notice Capture Sort Retain Nurture Share ([Location 1156](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=1156)) - Your knowledge garden extends your mind. Your thinking won’t flow if you can’t trust its components. ([Location 1357](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=1357)) - metadata is data that provides information about other data. ([Location 1884](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=1884)) - While developing deep know-how is important, you should also learn about seemingly unrelated fields. ([Location 2241](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=2241)) - The process of producing something meant for publication, such as a book, presentation, or YouTube video, follows five steps: Gestating Researching Structuring Drafting Revising ([Location 2469](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=2469)) - Gestation is the beginning of the process: you have an idea about something you want to publish and nurture it from the first spark through to development. ([Location 2492](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=2492)) - Perhaps you find evidence corroborating the idea or get enthusiastic responses when you tell other people about it. Whatever the case, you decide you want to pursue the idea. The next step is researching the subject more deeply. ([Location 2501](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=2501)) - instead of capturing ideas to remember them later, you’re looking to externalize ideas to define relationships and distinctions between them. There are two main approaches you can take: outlining and mapping. ([Location 2514](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=2514)) - You must then get feedback and make whatever corrections are necessary. ([Location 2555](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=2555)) - When sharing publicly, you can’t assume the reader has read the book, so you must explain the basics: What is the book about? What is the author trying to do? Were they successful? Why/why not? ([Location 2581](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=2581)) - He distinguishes between three levels of sharing, ranging from most intimate to most public: Work teams, who develop joint knowledge toward shared goals Communities of practice, consisting of trusted individuals who share the same context Social networks, which expose more refined ideas to other perspectives ([Location 2642](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=2642)) - lasting behavior entails considering what you’re doing on three levels: Outcomes: What you want to get out of the behavior change. For example, you might build a knowledge garden because you want to write a book. Processes: The day-to-day activities that allow you to “work” the system. For example, capturing your thoughts when they occur to you or clearing your inboxes. Identity: How you see yourself anew in light of the behavior change. For example, you now think of yourself as an author.9 ([Location 2974](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=2974)) - Collaboration opens you up to feedback from diverse perspectives that strengthen and broaden your thinking. ([Location 3103](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B0CN7NT41X&location=3103)) ## Related - [[3. Resources/Readwise/Books/Effective Notetaking|Effective Notetaking]] - [[3.
