([Location 135](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=135)) - did not know that by receiving Sandy's popularity grid of approval that I was simultaneously rejecting part of my own loving parent's grid which was of an unconditional kind. ([Location 137](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=137)) - The devil simply needs us to trust anyone or anything for "new information" about how to find our sense of O.K.–ness in this life in order to drive a separation between us and our confident destiny in God's eyes. ([Location 140](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=140)) - basic definition of orphan is a child who has lost their parents. But when we imagine an orphan we often think of a child who is alone, not only needing parents but also a family, an identity, and a place to belong. ([Location 224](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=224)) - This deep cry for a place in the world transforms itself into an external need to be received and embraced by others in order to feel like somebody. ([Location 239](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=239)) - this. We don't fear him because he is terrifying–in fact, we know him as pure Love–but we do fear him because of the consequences of living past the edge of his pleasure and approval. ([Location 243](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=243)) - When we allow our experiences to speak to us about the nature of God, we've done the enemy's work for him. ([Location 367](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=367)) - The Father didn't want them to eat the fruit because he wanted them to depend on him, rely on him, and trust him explicitly, which is just what our children do when they are small. ([Location 502](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=502)) - When you are trying to find your sense of O.K.–ness by being right or wrong, your life becomes a series of comparisons and you end up in a self–imposed prison. ([Location 554](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=554)) - Receiving God's love is the foundation of our sonship. We live like sons when we receive the truth of who he is and his love for us into the core of our beings. ([Location 726](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=726)) - When we can't receive the perfect love of the Father , however, we are even more deficient at receiving the imperfect love of others. ([Location 731](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=731)) - We want to be loved and received for who we are. ([Location 746](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=746)) - Our citizenship was purchased by the blood of Jesus and we are labeled sons and daughters, not servants, slaves, or orphans. ([Location 750](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=750)) - Note: Dream bigger than just "safe" - He didn't save us to be orphans or slaves. ([Location 753](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=753)) - The problem with finding our identity in what we do is that as soon as what we do changes or morphs or goes away, we're lost again, which means that in our cores we are still living like orphans who don't really know who our Father is and therefore we don't really know who we are. ([Location 898](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=898)) - Our identities are meant to be in the Father and not in the gifts he gave us. ([Location 901](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=901)) - If our worth is constantly being determined by our place in the world or determined by our gifts then we must always progress. We must constantly achieve and improve and become more and more excellent. ([Location 903](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=903)) - And if we are to be more excellent, then we will try to be better than the next guy, which means that our focus is on ourselves and the next guy and not on the Father. ([Location 904](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=904)) - When our sense of worth, value and general okay–ness comes from what we do, we naturally take our eyes off of Christ and put them on our achievements, giving way to envy, jealousy and selfish ambition. ([Location 914](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=914)) - And our need to find our identity in what we do instead of in who we are in the Father is a natural by–product of looking for a place or position. ([Location 918](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=918)) - The Holy Spirit speaks the truth to our hearts that we are no longer orphans, but that we are in him and he is in us and he is in the Father. ([Location 1049](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1049)) - One of the tools I learned was to ask the Lord questions, journal what came to mind, and submit these journal entries to a trusted leader or mentor. ([Location 1156](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1156)) - The Holy Spirit will not accuse you or anyone else. ([Location 1162](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1162)) - If you, however, can build your skills at ruling your soul, you can live in the truth all the time. ([Location 1203](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1203)) - You are God's dream. Without you, life just wouldn't be the same for him. He cherishes you. He cherishes who you are. You are a treasure to him and he enjoys just watching you and taking in the marvel that you are to him. ([Location 1217](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1217)) - When it comes to health, or finances, or relationships, we often put our trust right back in ourselves. ([Location 1233](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1233)) - In that time, a family robe could only be worn by an honored son. ([Location 1283](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1283)) - The ring, in those days, was a symbol of authority. So without a period of testing or probation, the father gladly gave his son all the authority he had. ([Location 1285](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1285)) - He also revealed where his affections were because he didn't plan to have a celebration with his Father but with his friends. He just wanted the abundance so he could party with his pals. ([Location 1298](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1298)) - The older son was blinded by the slavery in his heart. He couldn't see that his Father's love was always there for him, that everything that his Father owned was already his and that his Father loved just having him around, whether he was working in the fields or not. ([Location 1303](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1303)) - The symptoms of both the orphan heart and the slave heart can often be identified in cycles. ([Location 1309](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1309)) - I try to prove myself by becoming awesome ([Location 1319](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1319)) - The heart of the orphan is looking for identity. Therefore, it will often act out in search of someone who will name it, recognize it, give it purpose. ([Location 1323](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1323)) - Instead of experimenting in order to understand what its gifts are or what its style is, the heart of the orphan looks to its peers to identify it, to tell it who it is. ([Location 1326](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1326)) - The heart of the orphan always needs to prove itself. ([Location 1354](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1354)) - There is pride associated with accomplishments. ([Location 1355](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1355)) - There is a great need for others to see how well the orphan has done and applaud him or her. ([Location 1356](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1356)) - Often an orphan enters a room, name drops, immediately hands out a business card, or tells unending stories of his or her awesome adventures. ([Location 1356](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1356)) - The orphan is about him or herself; the orphan isn't sure of his or her place in the world yet, and so most of his or her life's work is about carving a place out. ([Location 1357](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1357)) - This part of the orphan heart is also seen in the person who puts his or her identity in work or career pursuits. ([Location 1358](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1358)) - In having a better position than others, slaves believe they also have more love than others and therefore have more favor, respect, honor, love, acceptance, etc. ([Location 1378](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1378)) - Better positioning to the slave also equates with "nearness." ([Location 1379](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1379)) - The heart of the slave must also compare itself to other slaves in order to make sure that it is right, and thus be received and seen by the master. ([Location 1403](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1403)) - The desire of the Father's heart is that you be blessed, but you can't be blessed until your heart can fully release the one who owes you from the prison of unforgiveness into the freedom of blessing. ([Location 1602](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1602)) - The second reason the Father gave us gifts is so that we can use them to love people and bless others. ([Location 1774](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1774)) - Many times we burn out because we are doing things we were not created to do. ([Location 1789](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1789)) - Attaining our destiny requires a trust in the character of our Father, a belief in his goodness, and a vision for the future that only sons can possess. ([Location 1917](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B003ZYEWN4&location=1917))
