## Document Notes
## Highlights
- Even a tiny amount of trans fats in the diet of the pregnant and nursing mother can result in reduced visual acuity. ([Location 961](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=961))
- High fructose corn syrup and its cousins agave “nectar” and yacon “syrup” are even worse than sugar, especially for the period of growth. ([Location 980](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=980))
- The most dangerous additive is the neurotoxic free glutamic acid, also known as monosodium glutamate (MSG), often disguised as hydrolyzed vegetable protein, yeast extract or “natural” flavors. ([Location 1046](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=1046))
- argues convincingly that lack of beneficial gut flora, often initiated with the mother’s use of antibiotics, is a major factor in autism. ([Location 1186](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=1186))
- Unlike natural folate from food, synthetic folic acid does not cross the placenta.87 ([Location 1201](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=1201))
- (For a complete list of herbs to avoid during pregnancy, see www.92024.com/herbsnpregnancy.htm.) ([Location 1214](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=1214))
- Hot baths with Epsom salts and magnesium-rich clays can be helpful for relaxation and detoxification. Baking soda and salt baths (one pound of each) weekly can help clear the body of radiation damage, and are a good policy after any x-rays or airplane trips. ([Location 1228](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=1228))
- Vitamin Code Raw Prenatal contains carotene, not true vitamin A, and boasts B12, ([Location 1861](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=1861))
- Does the hospital allow the presence of a birth assistant or doula? What about skin-to-skin contact of mother and baby immediately after birth to initiate breastfeeding, even after a Caesarean birth? Will they allow the complete drainage of the cord blood into the baby before the umbilical cord is cut? Will the hospital allow the waxy vernix caseosa to remain on the baby, or will it be dried off? Will baby be removed from the parents’ sight at any time? Will baby be allowed to stay in the room with mom? What about routine interventions, such as vitamin K shots, sugar water in a bottle, antiseptic eye drops, circumcision—any problem if these are refused? Above all, can the hospital guarantee that baby will not be given any vaccinations after the birth? ([Location 2393](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=2393))
- PACKING YOUR BAG FOR THE BIRTH Here’s a checklist for your hospital bag: ([Location 2483](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=2483))
- routine antibiotic use poses real dangers to both mother and baby. Many women have reported severe allergies, asthma, ADHD and even autism in their children after mom received IV antibiotics during labor and delivery. ([Location 2502](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=2502))
- Eastern Europe, it is the custom for women to apply yogurt or kefir to the vagina, starting about one month before birth; in principle, this practice will reduce the likelihood of Strep B infection. ([Location 2528](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=2528))
- If for any reason you do receive an antibiotic during delivery—if you have a C-section, you cannot refuse IV antibiotics—it is very important to give your baby a bifidus bacterium supplement to colonize his intestinal tract with the right bacteria (see Chapter 7). Mom should take a probiotic supplement as well and make consumption of lacto-fermented foods a daily habit after the birth. ([Location 2533](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=2533))
- Your baby will still be connected to the umbilical cord, and should remain connected for some time so that all the cord blood empties into the baby (see page 97). Your first instinct will be to put the baby near your breast, skin to skin, and that is exactly what you should do. In many cases, baby will actually squirm and root until he takes the breast. ([Location 2696](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=2696))
- just say “no” to a routine IV stent. ([Location 2863](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=2863))
- To induce contractions, your first choice is nipple stimulation. ([Location 2896](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=2896))
- All babies born by C-section should receive a supplement of bifidus bacteria, even if they are breastfed (see Sources). ([Location 2968](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=2968))
- vitamin B12 supplement for several weeks is also advised, as vitamin B12 can mitigate the toxic effects of anesthesia (see Sources). ([Location 2975](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=2975))
- Conventional medicine is beginning to recognize the benefits of delayed cord clamping, focusing on the iron status of the infant. A meta-analysis showed that delayed clamping of the umbilical cord in full-term neonates for a minimum of two minutes following birth is beneficial to the newborn in giving improved iron status and reduced risk of anemia for at least two months.1 Those ([Location 3000](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3000))
- When the cord is cut before the infant begins to breathe, the placental oxygen supply is instantly cut off and the child remains asphyxiated until the lungs begin to function. Blood that normally would have been transfused to establish the child’s lung circulation remains clamped in the placenta, and the child diverts blood from all other organs—such as the brain—to fill the lung blood vessels. ([Location 3028](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3028))
- cord clamping before the first breath always causes some degree of asphyxia and loss of blood volume, totally cutting off the infant brain’s oxygen supply from the placenta before lungs begin to function. The ([Location 3037](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3037))
- been know for over two hundred years. “Another thing very injurious to the child, is the tying and cutting of the navel string too soon; which should always be left till the child has not only repeatedly breathed but till all pulsation in the cord ceases. ([Location 3050](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3050))
- Just leave this natural defense against dryness and infection there, and let it flake off naturally during the first week or so after birth, as baby’s skin matures. Only when the vernix is all gone should you give your baby a bath. ([Location 3120](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3120))
- If your baby does develop an eye infection, a few drops of your colostrum or breastmilk, rich in immune factors, put into the eyes quickly solves the problem. ([Location 3145](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3145))
- For one thing, the vitamin K in the shot is a synthetic version of vitamin K, called phytonadione, and it is given at a dose that is one hundred times greater than the infant’s Recommended Daily Allowance of this nutrient. ([Location 3151](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3151))
- As a result, your baby has very limited ability to detoxify the large dose of synthetic vitamin K and all other the dangerous ingredients in the injection cocktail. ([Location 3165](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3165))
- The alternative to the vitamin K shot is vitamin K drops, which are safe and effective. They are given as one to two drops for the first twenty-four hours, one to two drops the first seven days from birth, and finally one to two drops twenty-eight days from birth. Although not approved by the FDA for this purpose, they are readily available, even without a perscription (see Sources). ([Location 3166](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3166))
- the hepatitis B vaccine may cause a variety of immune and neurological problems. ([Location 3186](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3186))
- Make sure you fill out whatever form necessary to prevent hospital staff from giving it and insist that the words “No Hep B vaccine” be written clearly on your baby’s chart. ([Location 3198](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3198))
- baby is taken away from you in the hospital for any reason, your doula, partner or birth companion should stay with the baby at all times. ([Location 3200](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3200))
- If you do decide to circumcise your baby boy, it’s best to wait until the eighth day or later, ([Location 3344](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3344))
- You can check the laws for your particular state at www.thinktwice.com or www.909shot.com/state-site/legal-exemptions.htm. ([Location 3498](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3498))
- eczema, asthma, leaky gut and susceptibility to infection are all explained by sulfate deficiency. ([Location 3605](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3605))
- Delay vaccinations until age two. ([Location 3631](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3631))
- Give no more than one vaccine every six months. ([Location 3632](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3632))
- Never give more than one vaccine at a time. ([Location 3633](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3633))
- Avoid live virus vaccines. ([Location 3633](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3633))
- Supplement the child with extra cod liver oil, vitamin C, B12 and sulfur-containing foods such as liver and egg yolk before each shot. ([Location 3636](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3636))
- A family history of neurological disorders, epilepsy, allergies, immune disease or severe reaction to a vaccination is sufficient for a doctor or nurse to provide a medical exemption. ([Location 3646](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3646))
- Many other bad things can end up in mother’s milk, including pesticides, flame retardants, fabric treatments like Scotchgard, Teflon from nonstick pans, mercury from amalgam fillings, and high levels of phytoestrogens, ([Location 3893](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3893))
- Lightly brushing the breast against the cheek of your infant should provoke the rooting reflex followed by latch-on. ([Location 3929](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3929))
- Pacifier use has been associated with a fourfold drop in breastfeeding rates at six months compared to nonusers.53 ([Location 3964](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00CDJXQ52&location=3964))
