Like most people, when I get to an airport, I want peace and quiet. And like all women travelling alone for work, I need to be hypervigilant about my personal safety every second of every minute. Iām in one of those bank card reward programmes that gives me discounts on things including airport lounges, so I had a peek at Glasgow Airport's lounge offerings. There are two, and neither are cheap, even with the rewards discount.
Letās look at the two options. Iām cutting and pasting directly from the airportās website here.
Option 1: Enjoy the very best of Glasgow before your flight with the Lomond Loungeās premium Loch Lomond Group Whiskies, Gins, Champagne and sprits. The maximum stay in the Lounge is up to 3 hours from your arrival time. [ā¦] Guests can enjoy up to 4 alcoholic drinks in total within the Lomond Lounge package.
Option 2: Watch planes take off whilst taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi and complimentary drinks and snacks (alcoholic drinks are limited to four per person).
Glasgow Airport's marketing minds calls this a brilliant offer. But to me, and any woman travelling alone, I find this completely horrifying.
These offers are clearly not about paying for a little bit of peace and quiet. Theyāre Scottish code for "come up and get pished. Absolutely, steaming, pished."
Seriously, _four alcoholic drinks tokens_? I have been to conference afterparties that didnāt hand out four alcoholics drinks tokens, and that includes afterparties where people woke up the next day in a different country. (This really happened. Multiple times.)
You could not pay me to go into these lounges, even with a discount.
I know this is incomprehensible to the tartan-twee parochial marketing minds at Glasgow Airport, but not everybody goes to an airport to get drunk. Not everybody goes to an airport to be surrounded by drunks. And nobody goes to an airport to put their personal safety at risk, which is quite the irony given the security context at an air...

And nobody goes to an airport to put their personal safety at risk, which is quite the irony given the security context at an airport which was once directly attacked by terrorists.
But if your advertising pitch to me for the peace and quiet I'd like before a work trip is āfour alcoholic drinks tokensā, Iām going to do exactly what I do, which is buy a Boots meal deal and head straight to my departure gate, without āsampling the fineries.ā
Because if your advertising pitch screams ācome up to our unsafe place for women travellers and surround yourself with high-functioning alcoholicsā, you really do need to have a word with yourselves: both about your offering, and about the message you're sending about who really counts here., š Heather Burns, Colin Meek & Managing Partner At Rb M & Building Trust In The Energy Transition & Chris Riley & Soft..., 01k1b4647f0wmxa1cs0xzfe02p.
