Last week we were offered a generous, six month severence if we wanted to leave Automattic. It was presented as an [alignment offer](https://ma.tt/2024/10/alignment/), giving folks an out if they didn’t agree with Matt’s direction. It was bittersweet as we watched around 8% of our colleagues depart over a few days. I wish each of them the very best in their next chapters. We lovingly use “chaos” to describe work and last week delivered. I stayed. Automattic fills my cup. I work with incredibly talented humans from around the globe. There wasn’t a deliberation. I knew I’d stay. [My values are aligned with Automattic](https://automattic.com/creed/). It boils down to defending beliefs of free community. Something in my DNA makes me care a whole lot about community, especially those who are underrepresented. This is what led me to pursue nursing out of high school, and then on to Automattic in my late twenties. Providing for community looks like a lot of things. For me, the healthiest communities have a common thread where those who are able provide their share. I’ve been lucky to foster communities with my colleagues at work for many of our products [and my partner IRL](https://www.instagram.com/everfield_farm). When our cups are full, we can help others. Automattic’s values reach far beyond the online world and WordPress ecosystem. *We are passionate about making the web a better place*, and those same principles penetrate our IRL communities across the globe. My WordPress story started in 2006. We were a couple of broke college kids raising our baby together with a focus on the future. Kris used WordPress to build a successful MMA blog. Free and open source, it provided an option to be self-employed when childcare and transportation were tricky logistics. Fast forward a few years, we got married and relocated to NC before he sold his MMA blog. Kris took a (well deserved) year off from blogging and WordPress before joining Automattic as a Happiness Engineer supporting users of WordPress.com. Kris was my introduction to healthier work-life balance. I made the career leap from RN (registered nurse) to HE (happiness engineer) in 2016, never looking back. Our “baby” has grown up knowing WordPress and our unmatched culture and benefits at Automattic. She is submitting college applications this fall with an essay anchored in the importance of… community. Some content could not be imported from the original document.
