#### WordPress.com Owner Bolsters Legal Bench Amid Trademark War
##### BloombergLaw - United States Law Week
Automattic Inc., the privately held owner of online publishing and software service WordPress.com, has added Andrew Missan to a revamped in-house legal team amid its ongoing battle with a private equity-backed competitor.
Missan joined Automattic as chief legal officer last month, according to his LinkedIn profile. He most recently was the top lawyer for electric aircraft startup Archer Aviation Inc. Prior to that he was general counsel for wearable technology maker Fitbit Inc. Missan helped take both companies public.
It was Automattic’s second recent action to bolster its law department. In November, the company appointed former Twitter Inc.lawyer Jordan Hinkes as its general counsel. Hinkes and Missan step into a void left by Automattic’s former legal and corporate development chief Paul Sieminski, who left last year.
Automattic, Hinkes, and Missan didn’t respond to requests for comment.
The turnover in legal leadership comes amid a licensing battle between Automattic and WPEngine Inc., a website hosting enterprise [owned](https://www.bloomberglaw.com/product/blaw/bloombergterminalnews/bloomberg-terminal-news/P21OFK6K50XY) by buyout giant Silver Lake Management LLC. At stake are rights to trademarks of WordPress and its related open-source e-commerce arm, WooCommerce.
WPEngine, advised by Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, sued Automattic in October. Last month a federal district judge in San Francisco [ruled](https://www.bloomberglaw.com/product/blaw/document/X1Q6OO92TU82) that Automattic—represented by a Hogan Lovells team led by prominent litigator Neal Katyal—must restore WPEngine’s access to the WordPress ecosystem as their trademark dispute plays out in court.

Missan owns Archer shares valued at about $6.5 million.
Eric Lentell has [succeeded him](https://www.bloomberglaw.com/product/blaw/document/XBFJUELO000000) as Archer’s lead lawyer. He previously worked with Missan at Fitbit and Alphabet Inc.’s Google, which acquired Fitbit in 2021.
