## 📝 Summary:
This article introduces the FAIR Initiative, a new approach aimed at decentralizing the update mechanism for WordPress plugins and themes. It addresses systemic issues like update centralization, supply chain risks, and security vulnerabilities by enabling multiple trusted sources to manage and distribute updates. The FAIR Initiative follows principles making packages Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable, enhancing the overall ecosystem’s robustness and trustworthiness, especially for enterprise users.
---
## 📖 Main Content:
Coy Wolf’s article explains how the FAIR Initiative seeks to modernize WordPress’s update infrastructure by decentralizing control, which traditionally rests heavily on the WordPress.org repository. The current centralized model causes bottlenecks, introduces supply chain vulnerabilities, and complicates dependency management for plugins and themes.
The FAIR model proposes a distributed network of trusted package sources where updates are standardized under FAIR principles, ensuring every package is easy to find, accessible in secure ways, compatible with various systems, and reusable under clear licensing and metadata. This decentralization promotes resilience, reduces the risk of malicious code injection, and improves update reliability.
By distributing update control, the initiative empowers plugin developers and hosting providers to contribute to ecosystem security. Enterprises benefit from clearer update provenance and enhanced compliance capabilities. The article highlights ongoing collaborations with major players in the WordPress community and the Linux Foundation’s involvement, emphasizing open governance and community-driven development.

WordPress admins will no longer be dependent on getting Core, plugin, and theme updates from the centrally controlled WordPress.org.

On September 25, 2024, Matt Mullenweg [blocked WP Engine from getting updates](https://wordpress.org/news/2024/09/wp-engine-banned/) from WordPress.org. **The unilateral action was shocking to many in the WordPress community because it exposed the centralized control of how all WordPress sites get updates.** Regardless of whether Mullenweg’s action was fair, it set many WordPress community leaders and veterans on the path to creating a new update method that would be decentralized yet equally trusted and secure.
Based on an [idea proposed by Joost de Valk](https://www.therepository.email/joost-de-valk-calls-for-end-to-matt-mullenwegs-bdfl-leadership-of-wordpress) in late 2024, **he, along with a coalition of hundreds of contributors and the Linux Foundation, created [FAIR](https://github.com/fairpm), which stands for Federated and Independent Repositories**. The initiative was announced at the [Alt Ctrl Org](https://altctrl.org/) event, which coincided with WordCamp Europe 2025 in Basel, Switzerland.
FAIR announcement at Alt Ctrl Org
The primary goal of FAIR is to create infrastructure that allows WordPress to disconnect from receiving updates from the centrally controlled WordPress.org. FAIR consists of a [protocol specification](https://github.com/fairpm/fair-protocol?tab=readme-ov-file), an aggregator, repository nodes, analytics, and a connector plugin. **Together, they make a decentralized method for keeping WordPress up-to-date, eliminating the need for reliance on WordPress.org.**
#### Using the FAIR connector plugin
**The** [**FAIR connector plugin**](https://github.com/fairpm/fair-plugin/releases)**, when installed and activated on WordPress, enables secure updates from sources other than WordPress.org.** When you install the plugin, it displays the message, “Updates served from the [FAIR Package Manager](https://fair.pm/) and [Source]” in the bottom right corner of the browser window. For my site, it indicated that the source was [AspirePress](https://aspirepress.org/), but I assume that will be different for other sites, either now or in the future, as more decentralized package mirror servers are added.
Updates served from message
I’m currently testing it on one of my sites hosted with [Pressable](https://coywolf.com/visit/pressable/). I expect that the plugins and themes will receive updates. However, Pressable should still manage version changes, as the Core files are symbolically linked and [automatically updated](https://automattic.pxf.io/4GKx79) by the hosting service.
After installing the plugin, I was surprised to discover that [avatars no longer require the use of Gravatar](https://coywolf.com/news/web-development/you-no-longer-have-to-use-gravatar-on-wordpress-for-avatars-thanks-to-fair/). The FAIR plugin defaults to **FAIR Avatars**, allowing you to upload avatars to user accounts and serve them locally.
FAIR Avatars option
**I believe FAIR is a healthy approach for WordPress updates and the community.** And like with ActivityPub, Mastodon, and the [open social web](https://glossary.io/fediverse/), federation is the best way forward for all netizens.
FAIR will also enable more options for developers. Fast Company reported that the network could allow developers to ship both free and premium versions of plugins in a single signed package—something currently prohibited by the official WordPress repository. De Valk was also quoted as saying it will [make] it easier to build businesses around plugins and to provide good user experiences.
**Further insights and coverage of the launch of the FAIR initiative can be read on [Fast Company](https://www.fastcompany.com/91347003/wordpress-veterans-launch-fair-project-to-tackle-security-and-control-concerns) and [The Repository](https://www.therepository.email/joost-de-valk-calls-for-end-to-matt-mullenwegs-bdfl-leadership-of-wordpress).**, FAIR Initiative Decentralizes WordPress Updates, Jon Henshaw, 01jxg1e9t4hpyyfq5dj7wqbq3e.
