I'm a scholar of the Bible and religion and I'm still at lunch with a bunch of other scholars who participated in the nonjeroni meeting here in Rome which was a conference on early Christologology and how it developed and uh only one person got beat up during the uh during the meeting. That was that was me. But you know that was I was asking for it. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to to have some of the other participants share uh an insight they got from the conference or final thoughts on the conference or something like that just so you can get a sense for how other scholars are engaging these topics. So, I'm going to hand you over to my friend Dustin. >> Hi everybody. Uh I'm Dustin Smith and I'm a scholar of the Bible also right here. Okay. Yeah, we're getting help with the uh the IT team and uh I work at Sparkburg Methodist College and I thought this conference was really really helpful because it got us to uh acknowledge that second temple Jews had a spectrum of divinity and you could either go up it or down it depending on your role uh and the way that God is using you to interact with with creation. Uh I think we also discussed uh the need for having some clarity when it comes to these topics of uh divinity and deity. uh and even trying to identify when we're having discussions about Jesus also asking the question well who is God you know who is the God of Jesus you know so I think uh having those discussions was really really helpful for me and I'm going to pass you off to our next participant on the price is right >> hi I'm Chris Porter I'm a New Testament scholar at Trinity College in Melbourne uh and one of the things I really appreciate about this conference was a way of being able to think about uh divinity from a both an emic and an etic framework and think about ontology versus functionality as we start thinking about uh what is divine and and what do we mean by divine? And so from my point of view, I do a lot of sociological work um within the Bible and sociology of groups who receive the Bible. Uh and so thinking about those frameworks as to how people would have understood u onlogical versus a functional view of divinity. Hey >> everybody, I'm Daniel Glover. I am a scholar of New Testament. Uh I work at Lee University. Um what I really am taking away from this conference is the difficulty of language. Even ancient authors struggled with articulating precisely how they understood divinity. Um how they understood divinities relating to divinity uh that is embodied in the one god. So we have authors like pho who say that the divine logos through whom God made uh the cosmos uh is not begotten like human beings and not unbegotten like god but something in between. We have philosophers later who talk about um uh divine figures who aren't uh theos God and aren't anthropos man but are ginos some third kind of thing and so our language for divine and divinity can't capture the nuances of ancient religious intellection but uh the good news is that their language wasn't precise enough either I'm Anna and I'm not a scholar, just married to the scholar right here. But I enjoyed spending time with him and all of these amazing scholars here in Rome. And I enjoyed listening to all of our discussions that we had over our many dinners of carbonara and gelato here in Rome. >> And don't forget the tier misu. All right. Hope that was uh hope that was informative and thanks everybody for watching., Final Thoughts on Christology Conference?, YouTube, 01ktff2tvhv0m93a3ery1spj4h.
