He emphasizes the importance of having reading accessories readily available, such as a notebook, pen, and highlighter. Orn's first key point is to have a specific question in mind before starting any book, which helps focus reading and increases the chances of finishing the book. While reading, he suggests highlighting and writing down ideas that resonate with the reader to stay engaged in the process. Orn advises writing notes after finishing each chapter using the active recall method, which tests memory and allows for summarizing the chapter in one's own words. He also recommends writing down five to ten principles from each book to put into action, particularly in productivity or skill-related books. Lastly, inspired by "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," Orn encourages regular review sessions of the notes, tagging areas of interest for further research or future writing. ## Bullet Points: - Have reading accessories ready, like a notebook, pen, and highlighter. - Start with a specific question in mind before reading any book. - Allows for focused reading. - Increases the likelihood of completing the book. - While reading, highlight and write down ideas that resonate. - Read the full page before highlighting to avoid excessive marking. - Take notes after finishing each chapter using active recall. - Test memory and create relatable summaries. - Write down five to ten principles from each book to implement in life. - Especially useful for productivity or skill-related books. - Regularly review notes every week, transferring them to a computer if needed. - Tag areas of interest for further research or future writing. ## Paraphrase: 1. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kTdX-Ua0BAM&feature=youtu.be hello everyone my name is orn and todaywe're going to talk about how to takeeffective notes while reading for thepasttwo years i've been reading on average abook and a half a weekand over that time period i've found astrategic wayto get the most out of reading what i'mgoing to do in this video is lay out mysix step process of how i go abouttaking effective notesand i'll put the little time stamps herevisa bar no means inclusive so you cantake and leave some of these pointsbut this is the process that i use in order to get the mostout of the things that i read the firstpoint is have your reading accessoriesat the ready whether it's a notebook apen and a highlightermake sure that you are ready for readingnow this is sometimes not the case ifyou're for instance travelingor you're reading on a kindle but ifyou're at home make sure that you haveall of these accessories readyto make sure that you can get as muchyou can out of the book all i useis a fountain pen to write in mynotebook a ballpoint pen to write in theactual book and a highlighter to highlight as i'm reading throughthe second point although notspecifically related to note takingis for me the most important thing thati learned from reading over the pastcouple of yearsand that is have a question in mindbefore you startnot only does this enable you to selectbooks that you're interested in readingbased on a skill or something thatyou're interested inbut it also makes sure that theinformation that you getfrom the book is related to thatspecific question this has done twothings for me the first thing is that it's enabled meto get the relevant information from thebookbased on that initial question and thesecond thing is that itincreased my chances of finishing booksbecause i have a specific reason forfinishing itif you're going to take anything fromthis video definitely take that secondpoint of having a question in mindbefore starting any book the third pointis whilst you readhighlight and write down any ideas thatresonate with you from the bookthis could be highlighting within thebook this could be writing down little notes in the marginsanything to keep yourself engaged andactive in the reading processmy top tip on this point is to make surethat you read the full page before youhighlight or take any noteswe have all been there when we have reada full page and we're highlighting aswe're going throughand then next thing you know the wholepage is highlighted so make sure youread the page firstand then think about the ideas or quotesthat resonated with you from that pagethat you can highlight afterward the fourth point is related to a questionthat i often get when peopleare aversed to taking notes whilereading is because it breaks up theirflowand that is to take notes after readingevery single chapterthe issue with writing notes whilereading the chapter is that you lose theflow of reading which i totallyunderstandso what i actually do it's based on ascientific method of learning calledactive recallwhere you write down a summary of thechapter in your own words without looking back at the chapterafter finishing it this does two thingsit tests your memory because you've justread that chapter and the second thingis that you are able to summarize thechapter in your own wordswhich makes it more relatable to you iused to writenotes during reading the chapter butwhat i've found was i was justwriting it as if i was taking notes froma textbookrather than using my memory and gettinga short summaryof the chapter in my own words which hasproved incredibly beneficial the fifth point has been instrumental inmy ability toput into practice the things that i'vebeen learning from books and that is towrite downfive to ten principles that you wannaput into actionafter finishing every single book butspecifically on a productivity book or abook on a specific skillthis proves incredibly beneficial what ido is i write down five to tenprinciplesbased on that initial question that ihad before starting the bookand think about how i can implementthese principles into my life and i use thisas a process of review the sixth pointis actually something that i derivedfrom the famous book seven habits ofhighly effective people by stephenarkovyin the seventh habit he talks aboutsharpening the saw which is theabout the idea of constantly revisitingthe thingsthat you want to do in order for it tocompound and be beneficial to with thatin mindmy sixth point and the thing that i dois i review my notesregularly every single week and ischedule in time to do sothis review session usually entails taking the notebook formof my notes and then transferring itonto the computeri'm currently using scrivener to do thatand then taggingcertain areas of interest for furtherresearch ordown the line when eventually i write abook it's then tagged in order for me tothen go inand have a look at a specific topicwhatever medium you use for note-takingon the computer or in the actual hardcopyi definitely suggest booking in an hourevery single week to then review your notes whether that's on a saturday or asunday i usually do sunday eveningbecauseit's just helpful usually and that'swhat i usually do for my reviewsessions so that's it that's my list ofeffective note-takingif you have any
