The presenter, a computational neuroscience student, emphasizes practical implementation over theoretical discussion. The first phase involves developing initial focus through rekindling genuine interest in the subject matter and gradually increasing mental energy levels. Rather than attempting an immediate jump from low-focus activities to intensive study, the approach suggests using "stepping stones" - intermediate activities that bridge the energy gap. The second phase focuses on maintaining attention through environmental design and systematic distraction elimination. This includes creating dedicated study spaces, using behavioral conditioning through music and lighting cues, and removing or blocking digital distractions through various tools and techniques. The final phase addresses sustainable study practices through proper timing (60-90 minute blocks), strategic breaks, and physical activity integration. The approach recognizes that mental fatigue requires active management rather than pushing through exhaustion. ## 🗒️ Notes #### ⏱️ [00:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2EZP8Tufzg?t=0) — [H1] Introduction and focus on practical tips - longphilosophical introductioninto how it's important to stay focusedsince you click hereyou already know all this instead i willexplorepractical tips and strategies that i useon a daily basis to stay as focused as icanduring my study sessions we will talkabout what to dobefore you start your studying how tomaintainthat focused state and finally how toknowwhen to stop and what to do in betweenso without further ado let's dive straight into it but i am keeping myfancy into the ramsarif you're new to the channel welcome ifyou're a returning subscriberdefinitely welcome back glad to see youmy name is artem i'm a computationalneuroscience student and researcher herewe explore mental and digital tools tohelp us study and learn more effectivelylike i promised today we are going totalk about how to focus but before you actually have a problem ofmaintaining a focusyou need to develop that state ofattention in the first placemost of the time that's actually thehardest part becauseat the moment it might seem impossibleto go fromlying on a couch watching netflix towriting that essay you have been puttingoff fortwo weeks now and the thing that reallyhelps isif you have some interest someexcitement and curiosityabout the stuff you're going to do forexample if i have to read a bunch of articles ori don't write ascript that i don't know how to startand i'm just lying there procrastinatingit helps me if ijust recall all this stuff that actuallymade me choose this lab why i do what ido whyi took this class for example you knowjust torefresh those memories of excitingmomentsabout you know the process of discoveryof learning something newor you know maybe you just like theprocess you're passionate about itstuff like that it helps you to bring back this spark thatgets the momentum going another cooltrick is to graduallyincrease the target level of focus andalertnessand here's what i mean suppose that axisis timeand here is your mentalenergy right uh this includes like levelof focusalertness the cognitive load somethinglike that supposeinitially this level is very low allright so you'rewatching highlights from how i met yourmother you want to get to that level right this is where yousolve your problem sets thissudden jump that difference of energyyou can't do it instantly the delta e istoo big what you could dois say you know what before i startsolving problems i'm going todo some light reading right so you kindofinsert a stepping stone in between forexamplean interesting article on quantummagazine or an intriguing ted talk that you havebeen putting off lying around in yourwatch later playlist you see you breakupthe energy level into two lower levelsso here's delta e1 and here is delta e2right the difference of energy and thatbarrierit's pretty achievable so you go toyou know you know you go fromprocrastination toreading something you are passionate andexcited about you knowdriven by by that interesting excitement and then you know 20 30 minutes lateryou remember about problem sets but youalready havesome focus some alertness you alreadygot into the mood into the zone andyou're likeyou know what i don't actually minddoing these problem sets right nowaltogetherso that's a very interesting techniquethat you could try outin case you have to do something reallydisgusting and you don't know how tostart likebefore you get started it helps to dedicate a certain time frame if yousit down to read a paper or to do ahomework it really helps to sayyou know what from right now i'm goingto workfor 60 minutes or 30 minutes or 90minutesi don't recommend doing more than 90minutes in one sitting but you knowyou have to be explicit you have to putit in your calendarwhat it does is that if you have acertain time frame to anchor youit actually improves your focus i haveexperienced thatcountless times myself and it's actually been experimentally provenlike time pressure like this improvesattentionso give it a go next one isthe role of environment and youshouldn't underestimatethe the role of environment when whereyou are locatedwhen you study it happened to me manytimes when i wasback in my dormitory you know there'sroommates around there is empty bottlesfromyesterday's party line around there thatyou your bedis right next to you so the wholeatmosphere even though nothing explicitlydistracting yourself no noises forexample justuh you know you can put your headphoneson butuh something in that atmosphere that'snot promotingproductive work if you can you know getaquiet cozy place in your housewhere you would feel this is the placethat actually promotes productive worki'm about to doso certainly don't do it on your bedwhen i realizedthis that you know i i can't do anything pretty muchin this environment i started going tocoffee shops and then i discoveredpublic libraries so now i pretty muchspend the entire dayat the library it's such a game changertrust me environmentis key and that sort of thing finallymake use of environmental and behavioralhooksby doing certain behavior before orduringyour focus session repeatedly youcondition your brainto enter that state when it feels the cuefor example you know get a lamp and youwould turn this on whenever you studyand when you don't study you turn thisoff and this is crucial you do this fora whileand when you want to study but you justdon't feel like it youturn on the lamp and suddenly you knowit it makes it much easier to enter thatfocus state another example would be isuh you know since i spent so much timein the library and it's pretty big thereare all sorts ofdifferent sections of the hall there are a lot of empty places so i kind ofcreated aspatial separation pattern for myselfyou knowin this corner i usually read scientificarticleshere is where i edit my videos you knowif i'm sittingnext to this window i'm doing myhomework and throughout my day i kind oftransition igo around these corners and you knowwhenever youenter a particular environment and ifyour brain is conditioned it makes itmuch easier butthe the coolest trick coolest example ofthis condition in that i make use pretty much every day is to conditionyourselfon music you get a study playlistinstead of mixand you play a particular type of musicevery time you do your work i choselow-fi mixesso i have different type of lo-fi mixesfor differentsort of work i think i'm physiologicallyaddicted to lo-fi at this pointbut it works like magic trust me ireally discovered it a few months agowhen i don't know maybe i had too muchsugar in my latte but i had this paper to read and i just didn'tfeel like iti felt so drowsy and in the mood of justmindlessly scrolling my feed uh nothingwas helping i putmy music on and just a few seconds intothe track maybe like 10 secondsthis drowsiness this brain fog it almostdisappearslike it makes it so much easier to enterthisattention state now every time i dosomethingi put on a track that matches it it really puts me into the zoneso that that definitely works andif you haven't already try this studyplaylistand so once you have finally everythingset up you have anice environment you have your lo-fiplaying in your earphonesyou're excited to do the work you'reabout to dobut then what happens is you have aphone line around here somewhereand occasionally facebook sends younotificationsyoutube sends you notifications somebody texted youor you know you you do your work in thecomputer you see some newsor you see somebody posted a newinstagram picture whatever you have allsorts of these distractions that arecompetingwith that attention that you aresupposed to be putting right here butinstead of you doing you you are allover the place a little bit of here alittlethere you know i'm a terrible artist butyou get the point you can'tdo this focused work basically thesolution is really simple we justeliminate all of these distractions if there is nothing to distract youthat beam of attention that you spent awhilegrowing preparing your environment it'sreally brightand the good thing is it it has nowhereto goright because your table is emptynothing's in the background soyou do really focus productive workduring that period the thing is is toeliminate these distractions ornot just not eliminate but introduceenoughfriction between you and the destructive processes to break this habitlet's talk about how to do that how toeliminate all these distractions let'sstart with your phone the situation withthat is really simplebottom line you do not need itduring your study time you have to putthat away i mean thatdon't just turn on the do notdistract and and put it right next toyou because even though you're notreceiving notificationsyou're still going to be like wait aminute nah nothing newso where was i wait does she have anynew photos you want to put that out of your reachwhat you do isyou turn on the airplane mode or betterturn it off completelyand you put it where you won't reach itlikestick it in a drawer in another room orburied underneath a pile of clothes oryou know if you are somewherein the library put it in a bag you youdon't want thisblack rectangle to hook your visualattentionone thing that i sometimes do is thatyou know ifif i'm in a library and the phone is it kind of feelsin my pocket it's too large what i do isthat i put it on the table butnot here i put it behind the laptopso like there basically when you do yourworkyou don't see it it's not distractinghere it really works trust methose couple of centimeters theyactually make a huge difference but youknowthe safest thing is just to put it inyour bag or somewheredon't panic about missed calls or missedtextsince you know your study session lasts for like an hour you canalways call back you can always check itafter you're done so it's not a big dealnow where things get really interestingis with your computer or your laptop ora desktopbecause if you don't have papertextbooksyou are using this thing to study youcan't eliminate thatbut at the same time it's a source of somany distractions sofirst of all let's be honest the onlysourceof distractions on your machine is the internet it's nice if you canspend hours procrastinating in pythonbut you know i think to to to most ofthe people theinternet is the thing that causes a lotof problemsso we're gonna focus on that so what youneed to do is to identifysources of internet distractions thewebsitesthat you tend to get sucked into to me iknow that it'snews resources about esports thosewebsitesthat are completely irrelevant that youknow you arenot going to use any time during your study session i use a wonderful app ithink it's only for macbut on windows i'm pretty sure there area lot of analogs that havethe same functionality the app is calledself control you you set a timerand you set a block list of websitesthat you want to blockaccess to and once you press the buttonthere is no way backeven if you uninstall the app even ifyourestart your computer uh there isnothing you can do you don't have anyoption other thanwait for the timer to tick out you can bypass that withvpn but you know we're trying tointroduce frictionso if i really need to access thewebsite that i accidentally blocked atsome point i can't do that but itrequires a lot of work i mean i have tostart the vpn the connection would beslow somost of the time when you go to afavorite social media where you go tofacebook or you go toinstagram it's like a couple of clicksaway i mean it's already in yourfavorites bar or you already know how to fast type the address so you knowwhen you type instagram.com press enterand you see that you can't access thepage you remember ahright yeah i'm supposed to focus and youget back to setting it it reallysaves you a lot of time and a lot ofnerves so self-controldefinitely worth it use it when you knowyou're not going to need the websitenow the situation with youtube is a bitcomplicated becausei personally use it for studying i have a lot oflectures available there but at the sametime it'ssource of such a great number ofdistractions you go on youtube to accessthe topology lectureand then you discover yourself an hourlaterin tears watching the final fifth gameof ti3 finals navi alliancethere is a wonderful extension that iuse it's called df youtube i think distraction free youtubeyou can look it upuh so basically what it does is that itblocksall of the feed all of the suggestedvideosso when you go to youtube you see onlydark grey screenand the search bar you're not gettingsucked away from the purpose youwent to youtube for in the first placein the same leagueis the web extension called asocial sowhat it does is that it blocksnews feeds on social media if i want to accessmy social media when i need to go to mymessagesyou know to get to get some documentsoff of therebut i don't want to get sucked intoconsuming the thecontent the suggested news feed that thealgorithm so generouslyput together for me you know instead ofthe news feed i get thisthat would make a wonderful motor don'tyou think and last but not leasti wanted to touch upon another greatextension it's calledum empty new tab every time you open a new tab in the browser normally youwould get a lot ofsuggested websites you know yourbookmarks orpages you visit most often it's reallydistractingwhat it does is that you know when youpress new tab it's justblank dark grey screen no no trapsto suck your into you're good to go andas it goes for thelaptop and the internet on that laptopthat's pretty much itthose four tools should be sufficient tosuccessfully keep you focused for the time frame that you setbeforehandanother important aspect that i wantedto touch upon when to stopstudying and what to do in between thoseblocksas far as the duration goes it's usuallyrecommended tolimit the amount of time you spendstudying for about 60 to 90 minutesthat seems to be the optimal lengthbecause you know if you spend less timeyou're not doing much work done and ifyou spend more you get too tired andyour your focusstarts to decrease inside this block uh definitely no distractions about likeyouyou don't use your phone just just tohave a quick restbut uh sometimes it happens to me veryoften when i'm reading somelike super complicated papers you canliterallyfeel your mental stack your mental ramfeeling up really quickly i've beenreading for for10 15 minutes i'm full of information ineed to process this i need toclear the clear this stack what i do inthis case isis you know to stand up walk around the house you knowdrink some water if you have some like alight snackyou can grab a couple of nuts or like apiece of a apple just a few minutesto to process this amount of informationif you feeloverwhelmed by it the point is don't beafraid to takeshort distraction free rests if you feellike you need toanother cool habit i think is worthimplementing istaking walks or some kind of physicalexercise like basically avery big break between the sequence of these blocks so for examplewhat works for me is that i usuallyevery dayi take an hour walk around theneighborhood around the woodsi go grab a cup of coffee in a localcoffee shopand then it's back like a sequence ofthesestudy blocks i think this one's reallycrucial because resets your mindit introduces this kind of anchor pointright your your wholework breaks up into before the walk andafter the walk and like it has a lot of benefits it's good for your bodyit's good for refreshing completely so alargeblock of active rest in the middle[Music]that's pretty much all i have for youtoday drop a line in the commentstips that you use personally that helpyou stay more
