They celebrate repentant pastoral responses, document fresh plagiarism evidence, and trace how fabricated TPT footnotes have become the basis for whole charismatic doctrines. > - **Why it matters.** The hosts argue TPT is not a translation but a near-verbatim paraphrase plagiarized from at least three sources, marketed under false claims of translating "from the original Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic." They contend the deception has theological consequences โ€” invented "Aramaic" word studies are seeding heterodox teaching across large ministries. > - **Key stakeholders.** Brian Simmons and publisher BroadStreet; charismatic endorsers (Mike Bickle, Bill Johnson, Dr. Michael Brown, Patricia King); teachers building on TPT footnotes (Dutch Sheets, Damon Thompson, Jesse Duplantis, Kevin Zadai, Shawn Bolz); repentant pastors (Matthew Esquibel, "Pastor Thomas," Luke Castlemyer); platforms (Bible Gateway, YouVersion); critics (Mike Winger, the hosts, Andrew Chapman, Steve Kozar). > - **Risks and tradeoffs.** Charges of plagiarism and fraud are serious and partly rest on the hosts' own source-identification work; the discussion mixes documentable textual claims with contested spiritual judgments ("demonic," "doctrines of demons"). The hosts call for grace toward repentant leaders while pressing platforms to remove TPT. > - **Bottom line.** The hosts claim TPT's "Aramaic primacy" foundation is collapsing โ€” Simmons reportedly now scrubbing Aramaic from the text โ€” and that the core problem is dishonesty, not merely paraphrase. Their concrete ask: sign the petition for YouVersion to remove TPT. > ## ๐Ÿ“– Main Content > - **The core accusation.** Simmons claims to translate TPT directly from original-language manuscripts, but the hosts argue he copies "nearly verbatim" from existing English paraphrases and idiosyncratic Aramaic-primacy sources while not actually knowing Aramaic (a point they say Simmons admitted to Dr. Mark Strauss). They distinguish "translation," "paraphrase" (e.g., The Message), and plagiarism: paraphrasing openly is acceptable; claiming original-language translation while copying others is fraud. > - **Aramaic primacy as the selling point.** TPT's original premise: Aramaic was Jesus's "heart language," carrying emotional data that Greek "only reaches the mind." The hosts say this framing โ€” amplified by figures like Kevin Zadai โ€” is foundational to TPT's appeal, yet Simmons is reportedly now removing the Aramaic claims, including from the legally sensitive copyright section, while keeping softer versions on the FAQ. > - **The "paraklete / redeemer who ends the curse" case study.** The episode's centerpiece. TPT renders the Holy Spirit a "savior" in John 14 and footnotes an Aramaic word study claiming *parakleta* derives from roots meaning "to end the curse." The hosts trace this footnote: invented by Paul Younan, carried via Andrew Roth's *Aramaic-English New Testament* (plagiarized from p. 306, including Roth's own citations), even though *paraklete* is a Greek **loan word** in Aramaic/Syriac โ€” and Younan himself appears to have walked the idea back in a 2011 forum, before TPT published. Teachers (Dutch Sheets, Damon Thompson, Jesse Duplantis) then built doctrine on the fabricated note. > - **Theological stakes.** The hosts argue Scripture uniquely names Christ as the one who ends the curse (Galatians 3); making the Spirit a second "savior who ends a different curse" muddles Trinitarian distinctions and produces a "cosmic curse / the other savior is you" teaching they compare to extra-biblical revelation ("might as well be from the Book of Mormon"). > - **Pattern of copying.** Further examples: Luke 7 (TPT tracks the 1971 Living Bible's "wedding/funeral" wording); Luke 11 (TPT matches The Message's idiosyncratic "spider" for scorpion and invents a gender switch to "his daughter"); Hebrews 9:10 (TPT copies a misspelled Greek transliteration "diorthosis" from Franรงois du Toit's Mirror Bible); Hebrews 12 (TPT softens "scourges/chastises" into affirmation via a fabricated Aramaic note plagiarized from David Bauscher); Romans 8:9 (TPT follows du Toit's universalist "be yourself" reading). The hosts argue the plagiarism is *instrumental* โ€” it imports heterodox or universalist theology (du Toit's gay-affirming shifts, "all already in Christ") into the text. > - **The discernment thesis.** The hosts frame the deeper problem as charismatic "intuitive" discernment that trusts feeling and endorsers over evidence โ€” a "Jenga tower of trust." Their appeal: question your own discernment; godly sorrow and shame can be God-given training (Hebrews 12) rather than condemnation. > - **The ask and the tone.** They explicitly seek "repentance and restoration," praise repentant pastors, extend patience to those removing endorsements, and push for YouVersion removal because it offers TPT free to new/uninformed Christians. > ### ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Notes > #### โฑ๏ธ [00:00:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfJ_xWBSCy0&t=0) Setup โ€” response to the first TPT video > - This is a follow-up to a prior video with Mike Winger and David Fish. > - Goals: highlight good "pastoral" responses, surface concerning ones, add new plagiarism data, and answer "how does this affect theology?" > #### โฑ๏ธ [00:01:38](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfJ_xWBSCy0&t=98) Focus is grassroots, not Broadstreet > - They can't control whether BroadStreet pulls TPT; they press for repentance. > - What moves the host pastorally: small and large churches making "costly" choices to walk back prior TPT use. > #### โฑ๏ธ [00:02:45](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfJ_xWBSCy0&t=165) Matthew Esquibel's repentance post > - A Bible teacher publicly regrets encouraging TPT (Song of Songs, Psalms, 2017โ€“2019) without review. > - Confesses misplaced trust in endorsers โ€” Mike Bickle, Bill Johnson, Dr. Michael Brown. > - "I am deeply sorry for my failures as a shepherd"; deleted YouVersion, signed the petition. > #### โฑ๏ธ [00:06:03](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfJ_xWBSCy0&t=363) The "Jenga tower of trust" > - People wait for trusted charismatic leaders to rule before deciding. > - Host's default: distrust endorsers until they show trustworthiness via open repentance. > #### โฑ๏ธ [00:09:17](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfJ_xWBSCy0&t=557) Michael Brown / Patricia King pattern > - Alleged pattern: "accountability" figures repeatedly minimize misconduct ("I've met Brian, he's a good guy"). > - Host remains a continuationist but rejects the subculture and its leaders. > #### โฑ๏ธ [00:13:08](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfJ_xWBSCy0&t=788) Doubling down โ€” Chris Monahan's sati Two weeks ago, Mike Winger, David Fish, and I released a video about the Passion Translation, the Revival Bible that was translated, uh, you know, allegedly translated by Brian Simmons. And you can see that whole long video down below. But there has been a lot of response to this video, and we wanted to bring out what were some of the really good, positive, pastoral responses that we have seen from pastors within the charismatic movement. We wanted to highlight some of the good things that we're seeing, as well as some of the more concerning responses to our video. Now, we're seeing some good things happening. We're seeing some real, legitimate discernment happening on the grassroots level of many charismatic pastors, and I am here for it. We want to celebrate that. Also in this video, we have some some more data, some more information about plagiarism, some more concerning allegations, and honestly, um, some people are like, "Well, how does some of these things affect the theology that you would actually get from reading the Passion Translation?" And Shawn Bolz has an answer to that. And so, uh, stay tuned for this episode of the Minor Prophets Podcast. So, David, man, thanks so much for being here again on the Minor Prophets Podcast. You dropped a nuclear bomb last time we were on, and it is really catching fire across the internet. Um, and also we've seen some responses to this. >> Yeah, so when this video came out, I honestly didn't know, uh, what would happen. I think, uh, we both you, myself, Mike, we really had no idea whether or not this would bring true change, and obviously that that remains to be seen. But I think what we're going to focus on, uh, more so in this video uh, than, you know, is Broadstreet going to change? Is the Passion Translation going to be pulled from publication? It's really out of our hands, honestly, and we are obviously pressing for repentance. um but that's up to God and up to uh the the choices that Brian and Broadstreet and others in the charismatic movement make to put pressure on them. But we what we kind of wanted to focus on is the grassroots level, which is what moves my heart most as a pastor is to see other pastors just whether it's a church of 20, 30, 50, or 5,000 people who are making the right choice, and more than that, making a costly choice in many cases, to even walk back previous things that they've said, previous statements that they've made, previous um use that they've made of the Passion Translation in front of their congregation. So, I'm looking forward to just praising uh as we start some some really good responses that we've seen uh to our video. >> That's right. We have a post that honestly was very touching. Um I I I read this post. I think David, you you had a similar reaction. This is a post from Matthew Esquebel. He's a Bible teacher. He's connected with the Remnant guys whom I'm friends with, but I've never met Matthew Esquebel myself. Um I've I've never had an interaction with him. But his post on this was honestly stunning. Um and it exemplifies amazing Christian maturity, humility, and um and I think is really instructive as well. So, I'm going to um share this post here. He talks about the uh evidence that the Passion Translation is fraudulent. Uh some of the evidence, David, that you brought out that was really, I mean, just well done. Um and he says this, that he became aware of some of the claims from Mike Winger's videos and from other things that actually there there's some warnings. And he says that he he did not heed those warnings from Mike Winger. I want to read a couple paragraphs from this post because I I think it demonstrates just how the charismatic cover-up culture actually functions based upon trust and maybe there's something that we can learn from this. He says, "I regret not giving better heed to Mike Winger and others who sounded the alarm many years ago. I am grieved and honestly ashamed to say that sometime between 2017 and 2019, I cannot remember exactly when, I encouraged use of Simmons translation in in air quotes. Uh particularly Song of Songs and Psalms. I used them for teaching some midweek classes on Song of Songs and praying through the Psalms. I distributed copies of TPT Song of Songs and Psalms to those in the midweek classes. I knew very little about Brian Simmons and had not even read much TPT and it was irresponsible of me to encourage use of it, teach out of it, and distribute it without careful review of TPT books published at the time. He says this, "I I regret passing over what at the time seemed like unique odd or even questionable translation choices found in the sections I had read thinking his footnotes, his claims to dynamic equivalence, his claims uh that other scholars had reviewed his work, and his apparent openness to revise errors upon the recommendations of others were enough. Also, I mistakenly followed the endorsements of Mike Bickle, Bill Johnson, the character endorsements of Dr. Michael Brown, and other charismatic leaders such that I assumed that further scrutiny was unnecessary. My trust in them was sorely misplaced. Sometime shortly after a friend raised concerns and pointed to me one of Mike Winger's videos from years ago about it. I'm pretty sure that was my first exposure to Mike Winger. Regrettably, I chose to shelve his criticisms and see what Simmons and charismatic leaders who had endorsed Simmons might say in the future to respond to or verify Winger's claims. That's actually really instructive right there because that's what people are doing right now. They are waiting for a response from the charismatic leaders that they trust. They're like, well, I don't know who a minor prophet is and you know, like Mike Winger, well, he's he must be anti-charismatic. I'll wait to see what my leader of of note has to say about this. And this is actually the point. Is that there are no I can't It it's people like Matthew Eschevel, that you should be looking to. People who are repentant and humble enough to acknowledge where they've gotten it wrong and and to correct their mistakes based upon this. But the ones who are the endorsers, the the charismatic gatekeepers, they're no longer trustworthy. And this is actually the part of the problem is that there is this there's this um this Jenga tower of trust. And it seems like one by one these these blocks are being pulled and the whole thing is coming down. And honestly, people like myself, people like Matthew Eschevel, people like others are like, who do we trust in the charismatic movement? And honestly, it's my default position is I don't trust you until you show yourself to be trustworthy anymore by actual open repentance like Matthew Eschevel's post um demonstrates. Um he confesses that he did not take uh these concerns seriously. Um the the ones that Mike Winger raised like seven or eight years ago. And then he says, "I'm deeply sorry for my failures as a shepherd to heed the warnings of Mike Winger and others to look more carefully and critically at the unbiblical teachings of Simmons and his importation of them into the Passion Translation and to hold Brian Simmons and his publisher to basic scholarly standards in a Bible translation. I'm deeply sorry for any confusion or deception that any have come under as a result of reading TPT under my recommendation. Uh again, it should be recalled and avoided. Bible Gateway was right to remove it, and YouVersion should do the same. Following Mike Winger's example, I have deleted the YouVersion app and signed David Fish's petition for YouVersion to remove The Passion Translation. And uh he goes on, "This was a great great post, and I can link it down below." Yeah, I I think just the the phrase that sticks out is just a sing- that single line, "I am deeply sorry for my failures as a shepherd." And that can be so hard to say. I I I've been there before, where I have personally even in the last couple years I've been there. So, John Mark, you and I both um have no kind of highbrow looking, you know, down on people. Um I'm sure I will have to do this again before all is said and done. And hopefully it's not for something major, right? Like I I, you know, and there of course there are there are patterns of failure of discernment that could eventually cause someone to be disqualified, but this is not that. Th- This shows somebody who didn't do as careful work as he as he maybe should have, and he admits that. But now that he knows, right? So so that's what James says, right? To the one who knows what to do and doesn't do it, to him it is sin. And so when God has mercifully made us aware, which doesn't mean, by the way, that there are not sins of omission, that there are not sins of ignorance, even, but the most intentional sin is when we know what is right and we do not do what is right. The reference to Dr. Michael Brown is really significant. There have been these characters, um Dr. Michael Brown, Patricia King, I think maybe the two chief among them, who have found their way into most of the major kind of scandals ostensibly from the perspective of we are going to be the voice of accountability and truth and reason. And actually what we've seen in the last two or three years is every single time they were brought into these situations, they minimized dramatically minimized the misconduct that was occurring in so many different scenarios. And so for Dr. Michael Brown, I've heard his interviews where people called in and said, "The Passion Translation is dangerous." And Dr. Brown did what he always does, which is, "Well, I've met Brian and he's a really good guy." And then the next call was, "Hey, Sid Roth is platforming heretics left and right like to the peril of people's souls." "Well, I've known Sid since the 1980s. He's a great man, man of prayer. How dare you slander a brother?" That kind of um we protect our own is only broken when people like Matthew Eskivel come and said, "I'm not going to protect myself. I'm not going to protect my friends. I'm just going to do what's right for for the people of God." >> Yeah. >> And and you're a a 100% right. Like we are in the position I this whole channel is like a public documentary of my own process of coming to terms with the fact that the charismatic movement is not what I once thought it was. And while I am still unapologetically a continuationist, believe in and seek to practice spiritual gifts enthusiastically, I I cannot I cannot endorse the subculture that I came from, nor the leaders that I once held in high esteem. And and this is a this is a painful realization, and we have to have grace for other leaders who are in similar positions to be able to come and not just leaders, but everybody. You know, like it's hard to admit that you've been deceived and and then to do the right thing after that realization has and some people it takes time. And I think honestly one of the perils that and just this is just on a pastoral note one of the perils that we can fall into is demanding immediate results when people are complicated and it takes time to figure out what the right thing to do is. And repentance is a process that takes it takes time. It takes a while. And you know I understand the anger cuz I feel it myself. But we should have mercy and extend mercy towards leaders who are at least showing signs of doing what's right. And be patient. Be patient. Not so patient that it that it further is the cover-up of sin and it further is the wrong. We shouldn't be that patient. But we should be patient enough that when people say you know so for instance um you'll notice there is a missing endorsement. Uh J. K. Hamilton has removed his endorsement from the Passion Translation. And I can't comment I don't really know the specifics of what what what went on there and why his endorsement is is missing. Um but I know it's gone and maybe there's maybe there's a reason. Now >> [sighs and gasps] >> in contrast while we have seen some people removing their endorsements and doing so publicly we've seen great pastoral posts from people like Matthew Eskew and we've seen uh that you know J. K. Hamilton's endorsement is no longer present. There's several others that have doubled and tripled down on their endorsements of the Passion Translation. Um there's we've seen some really weird posts. Uh there's a post from a guy I've never heard of before but I guess he's also authored his own idiosyncratic um paraphrase of the Bible, but I don't know if he markets it as a translation, but this a guy named, uh, Chris Monahan. And he he's gone to bat defending, uh, Brian Simmons, and he has this sort of sort satirical, sort of that at least he's attempting to be satirical, post of if Mike Winger were to expose the Apostle Paul. And it immediately it it should be obvious to everybody why this post is ridiculous. Um, if the Apostle Paul was making contradictory claims about the appearance and help and assistance of angels, if uh, the Apostle Paul was making the types of claims and lying and plagiarizing that is obvious that that Brian Simmons has done, then the Apostle Paul would need to be exposed. Thank God the Apostle Paul is honest. >> Well, I I have a question, you know, I have a question for Chris and like this. Um, what if the Apostle Paul exposed the Apostle Peter? Because he did. >> Yeah. Right. >> Uh, and and it's this is very easily forgotten. Right. >> In Galatians 2. >> In all these circles, in Galatians 2, and and and Paul says I opposed him in front of all. I imposed I imposed him to his face in front of all. There was no nothing hidden. There was no secret tribunal for this situation. Um, it was really a brother confronting another brother, an Apostle confronting another Apostle. Um, and I so I >> I think this whole hypothetical situation. So, I I had somebody comment on one of my posts and they said, you know, very, you know, anonymous account on Twitter that was like, you would have been the Pharisee rebuking Mary of Bethany for pouring out her oil on Jesus. And my response was, if Mary of Bethany had stolen that oil, uh, that perfume from another woman in the village, and then had claimed that an angel had given her the perfume, um, she would have been rebuked. So, we've got to stop with these false, um, comparisons that are that are completely, uh, they're completely ridiculous. You know, this this is not a similar kind of situation and, you know, what what you and I both noticed and, uh, you know, we have we have screenshots of is, you know, Brian Simmons is liking these kinds of posts. Um, so this is feeding into what he certainly believes about himself, which is that he's done nothing wrong and all of this is overblown and people are just persecuting him and he's, you know, on a mission from God, I guess, and and this is just part of the opposition that's coming against him. And so this kind of stuff is feeding into that narrative, which, thankfully, you I I think everybody can see is a very, very, very, very small minority of people. >> Yeah. Yeah, most people are, honestly, I I think most people are sort of ignorant to to what the real issues are and some people are really confused about, okay, "So, what if he plagiarized? Isn't that what translation is? You're taking the work and one language and you're sort of copying it into a different language." Um, now those people have not watched that video. Obviously, the issue is when you are claiming to translate from the original languages and yet you are copying nearly verbatim from a paraphrase or from an idiosyncratic website from a guy who's, honestly, doesn't I say this compassionately, does not seem to be altogether sane. And it it some of his claims are very grandiose and have the air of delusion. For instance, he claimed that his father was the founder of the CIA and that the king of Norway personally intervened to prevent him from winning an Oscar, um, as well as other things. We David, you found a clip of a video that was purely demonic. >> Yeah. Yeah, I mean I again, I I give a content warning and I only bring this to to people's attention not so they can go watch it because I think the clip is is highly inappropriate. I mean there's nothing it's not rated R necessarily, but it's just something I wouldn't recommend anybody to watch, but um it it is not only inappropriate, it is I believe spiritually dark. There's characters that he calls demons. He uses like a specific word for demons. >> Dead or alive. >> Like dancing around to this kind of um you know, electronic music. It's it's at a minimum it's very strange and not >> of which is right or wrong, you know, whether you do right, whether you do wrong, all roads lead to Rome. >> Right. Essentially this sort of universalistic do whatever you want, free love type of message in this >> Yeah. >> really demonic dark music video. >> Yeah. And so this kind of stuff and we're going to come back to this in just a moment, but it's not just that there's plagiarism in this translation, which there is. And it's not just the translation. There are dozens and dozens and dozens and dozens and dozens of footnotes. And by the way, we didn't get to make this point as much, but I want to keep coming back to the people that are reflexively pushing back and saying, well, I just read it as a commentary. With love, you're you're making your case worse. Um, because if this is a commentary, that implies it's Brian's own words, all of it. And so when it turns out that they're not his words, that becomes an even bigger problem. And there are commentaries and scholarly Bible works that have been pulled for 1% of the amount of copying that we found in The Passion Translation. So I think that defense maybe worked for people 8 years ago, it doesn't work anymore. >> Right. And so we have people doubling down on these these endorsements, which is sad to see. Um and you know, Chris Monahan's example is is egregious and it really illustrates the cognitive distance. People are going to go either one of two ways with that. Um they're going to go the cover-up culture route, which is like, "Yeah, well, I I mean, he he says he says it in his own post. Well, they did bring up some good points, you know, and I'm and I'm glad that the Passion Translation is is improving, but calling him a liar, uh you know, is it just puts up walls." I'm like, "The criticism is that he is a liar. The criticism is that he is fundamentally dishonest in every claim he's made about this whole thing. He thought that he could just get away with it little by little, this war of attrition. He started out the whole book under the idea of Aramaic primacy. That was the major selling point of his whole thing. Is that really the heart language of Jesus is Aramaic, and the Bible, the New Testament was originally written in Aramaic, and if you can understand the Aramaic, there's all of this missing data, this emotional information that he is going to he's going to give to us. >> Yeah, so so let me chime in on that. So, with that in mind, right? Brian told us in our in our private conversation that he's effectively trying to scrub all of the Aramaic out of the translation now. Despite for I mean, I guess almost a decade now, right? I mean, over a decade, over a decade, claiming that Aramaic is the actual heart language of Jesus, that Greek only reaches the mind, but Aramaic reaches the heart. Um this is the whole foundation of everything in uh in the translation, and that's what caused people like Kevin Zadai, for example, who has a very large following, to say things like this. >> Never quoted, "You are actually an enemy of God." >> That's right. >> And this is what I'm noticing. They took the Passion Translation off of most things. closest to what Jesus spoke because he was speaking Aramaic, which is what the manuscript is taken from. And when I was with Jesus, I couldn't figure out when I was writing my first book, I couldn't figure out why what he was saying to me that I was a scholar. I was like I had a bachelor's degree in theology. I thought I knew the Bible. I'd been to the Rhema. I had Kenneth Hagin lay hands on me three times. And I didn't know some of the scriptures that Jesus was quoting. And I'm telling you, I had I had been to the best Bible schools. I had gotten more education than most people in this room. And I didn't know some of the scriptures. I had to go look them up. I didn't believe Jesus. There were scriptures in there that I had never heard. And I thought, you got to be kidding me. And they're they're there. Well, what what was I robbed as a believer all these years when I was sitting under teaching all the time? And Jesus was referring to to scriptures that I had no idea. I had to look them up when I came back. Okay, not only that, when I read the Passion Translation, it was the closest to how Jesus spoke to me. So, it doesn't surprise me that they decide that that's not legitimate and that all all the organizations, almost all of them, took them off. >> There's 900 problems with that clip. Uh but this is not a this is not a video about Kevin Zadai. But I just want to point out a couple things. One, Kevin Zadai is I guess under the impression and is definitely giving the impression to his audience that the whole Passion Translation is based on Aramaic. That's the whole point of it to him. So, everything that Kevin Zadai does around the world saying about the Passion Translation hinges on the fact that it's from the Aramaic. Which Brian is attempting to undo as quickly as he can because it's almost all plagiarized from from three sources and we've identified those three sources. The other thing though is it's impossible to not comment on this man is claiming that he went to heaven and spoke with Jesus Christ, right? Which is sounds familiar to a similar encounter that Brian Simmons himself had. And that he couldn't figure out why the Bible verses that he was reading were so different from what Jesus was saying. And the answer all along was that the Passion Translation is actually how Jesus speaks. And so this kind of stuff was all built because Brian Simmons lied. There's no other way around it. Brian lied and then let slip to Dr. Mark Strauss that he doesn't even know Aramaic. And so a guy who doesn't know Aramaic was plagiarizing from another guy who doesn't really know Aramaic, Victor Alexander, and all of that ends up in the Passion Translation to such a degree that as we're going to see, people have been building entire doctrines on fabricated footnotes from the Aramaic in the Passion Translation. >> Yeah, let's just look at Dutch Sheets doing just that. >> I'm but I'm hurting. So when he called him he's an I'm sending you another helper, paraclete. Some of you heard teaching on that word. It means so many things but the I'm going to give you the definition of the Aramaic word that is the equivalent of paraclete in Greek. It's parakleta in in the Aramaic in the Aramaic word. You can find this in the in the Passion Translation in your margin. And then this word means the word the equivalent of paraclete in the Aramaic language means to end the curse. Prag means to end or finish or save. Lida means the curse. The Holy Spirit comes to end the work of the curse of sin in our lives and save us from its very effect. Paraclete means a redeemer WHO ENDS THE CURSE. I SAY TO YOU, HE IS COMING NOW. HOLY SPIRIT, THIS IS HIS QUARTER. THIS IS HIS SEASON. HE'D BEEN BREAKING THE CURSE OFF US. HE BROKE THE CURSE OF CHILD SACRIFICE THAT FLOWED OUT OF THE SUPREME COURT. HE'S BREAKING THE CURSE OFF OF OUR CHURCHES WHERE WE PUSHED HIM OUT AND HE'S SAYING, "I'M COMING BACK TO TAKE MY PLACE." >> [cheering] >> I OKAY. SO, BRIEFLY, LET me tell you the story of how this footnote came about. And then we're going to look at, sadly, there are at least three to four, probably more, major charismatic ministries that are basing doctrine off of this footnote. Okay, so first let me read to you from the Passion Translation of this passage. It says uh in John 14, "And I will ask the Father and he will give you another savior." So, this is calling the Holy Spirit effectively a second savior. Now, that's already problematic for a lot of theological reasons, even if that were actually what the Aramaic says. And the footnote is going to be what Dutch Sheets uh just read. But here's the only problem. This footnote that Brian uses to derive this spurious translation of that the Holy Spirit is another savior. It comes originally from a guy named Paul Younan, but it comes by means of Andrew Roth's Aramaic-English New Testaments. This is plagiarized from page 306 of the edition I have of Andrew Roth's Aramaic-English New Testament. And um maybe we'll throw the images on the screen so you can see, so I don't have to read through. Um it's definitely plagiarized because here's what's very ironic about this plagiarism here. Is that this is one of the only times that there's citations given to outside works in the Passion Translation. But as you'll see from the images, those citations are copied directly from the So, the only reason outside attribution is being given at all is because it was already given by Andrew Roth. It goes even further because Roth took this from a guy named Paul Yunan and actually offers attribution to Paul in this footnote. He adds the initials PY at the end, which in his intro he says that's referring to this guy named Paul Yunan. So, this entire idea comes from a guy named Paul Yunan who states that the word for paraclete in the Aramaic comes from two roots that mean you know, basically end up meaning a redeemer who ends the curse. Okay. There's a massive problem with this and that's that it's completely fabricated. It the whole idea is a fabrication. Because the word in Aramaic is the Greek word. This is what we call a loan word, which means that they didn't have a word for it in Aramaic and Syriac, right? So, they just took the Greek word. It is the Greek word. They took it from the Greek language. So, the whole thing is invented. But it gets even worse than that because we have a screenshot thanks again to Andrew Chapman. We have a screenshot where Paul Yunan seems to basically, I mean he doesn't fully retract it, but basically says, "You know what? I think I was probably wrong about this. It's probably just the Greek word." Like this this this whole uh this root comes from this root. I probably just made it all up. I mean again, I'm I'm reading a little bit into what he says, but that's effectively the message of it. So, this this forum is from 2011. So, in 2011, before the Passion Translation is ever published, the guy who invented this out of thin air basically walks it back, but that does not stop Brian Simmons from copying it through Andrew Roth's work into his own work. Why does this matter? Well, you heard Dutch Sheets getting all animated and he's like, "The Holy Spirit ends the curse here. The Holy Spirit ends the curse." Okay, philologically, Jesus Christ is the only one spoken of in scripture as ending the curse. This is Galatians 3, right? Christ has set us free from the curse. And we know that when it comes to the Trinity, of course, the Father, Son, and Spirit are always working together. But, there are unique aspects in the work of the Trinity in our salvation. Those actions cannot be mixed. So, the Father does not die on the cross. The Holy Spirit does not die on the cross, right? The The Son does not pour out the Father on the day of Pentecost. Right? Like, it's just nonsense because we cannot speak of these actions equally because that's the way God's revealed it to us. And so, in one sense, that's a big enough issue. But, what we're going to see is, um, Damon Thompson. Now, I don't know almost anything about Damon Thompson. I know that he has a fairly significant ministry. So, we're not here to comment on Damon Thompson and whether or not his ministry's good or bad. I We really don't know much about him. But, I do want to point out that the clip we're about to see, he takes what Dutch Sheets has done even further, and he builds an entire teaching that he knows is controversial on this single this single fabricated footnote. >> the one who is called to do more than come alongside and help. And we learned a little bit about that Friday night. We're going to review a bit of that because I think it's important. Let's look at Dr. Simmons' footnotes. If you have a Passion Translation, if not, I'll read it for you. But, this is what he says regarding John 14:16 and 17. The Greek word used here is parakletos. It's a technical word that could be translated as advocate, comforter, a a defense attorney. There's a lot of ways it could be translated. But, none of these are adequate to really communicate what the writer here is using, John specifically, in parakletos. Various translations have rendered this counselor, comforter, advocate, encourager, intercessor, or helper. However, none of those words alone are adequate and fall short in explaining the in explaining the full meaning. The translator has chosen the word savior. For it depicts the role of the Holy Spirit to protect, defend, and save us from our self and our enemies and keep us whole and healed. He is the one who guides and defends, comforts and consoles. Keep in mind that the Holy Spirit is the spirit of Christ our savior. The word parakleta out of the Aramaic is taken from two words, proc, which means to end, finish, or save, and lita, which means the curse. What a beautiful word picture. The Holy Spirit comes to end the work of the curse in our lives and save us from its every effect. Parakleta means a redeemer who ends the curse. Now, one of the reasons people struggle with this and I'm already my mind's wanting to go somewhere that's going extend the review, but I'm so I'm trying to watch myself. But this is something that I think is important for us to understand. We have seen Jesus correctly as the finisher of the curse. Therefore, people will struggle with the idea that there's a curse left for the Holy Spirit to finish. And the issue with that is it creates this disconnection in the oneness of the Father, Son, and Spirit. As if the Holy Spirit cannot be as involved in the redeeming or finishing of the curse as is Yeshua the Christ. And because we don't understand the measure of fellowship >> Okay. So, this is building an entire doctrine on a footnote from a fraudulent translation. Not only that, and I don't think he's doing it intentionally. I think Damon Thompson actually believes that Brian Simmons is a doctor. But you notice how he started. Well, let's go to Dr. Simmons footnotes. So the people in this church presumably are going, "Okay, Dr. Simmons, so this is a scholar. This is a guy who knows what he's talking about." Well, this is a guy who doesn't know Aramaic, who's about to tell you about an Aramaic word that he's producing an entirely new doctrine. And elsewhere I believe that Damon has a video called The Holy Spirit another savior or something like that. Right. So this is an entire doctrine that actually Jesus is a savior in one sense, and Jesus ends the curse in one sense, but the Holy Spirit has to be our savior in a different sense, and he has to end a different curse in like a different way. >> And so and we have to be the ones to partner with him, and this is the extra curse that Jesus didn't quite take care of. It's He calls it the cosmic curse that we are participating with the Holy Spirit in ending. And so, you know, it's like the other savior is actually you. >> Yeah, I mean, it it's it's very much Yeah, the the point is Here's the point, folks. It's not in the Bible. So this is a doctrine. This might as well be from the Book of Mormon. There's no Right, there's no difference. In other words, this has the equal amount of inspiration from the Holy Spirit as the Book of Mormon has because it's invented. And the guy who made it up said effectively that he knows it's not true. And so it it's just If you read the Syriac, it's just the Greek word. And so these contrasts that Brian draws, he does this frequently. Brian will draw a contrast. He'll say, "The Greek word is blank, but the Aramaic word is blank." And when you actually read read it, it's the same word. And it's translated the same way. So all of these contrasts are to try to get you to think that there is something special, something revelatory that you do not know that he is going to reveal to you. And so I just find this to be one of the most troubling things in the world that people are beginning to accept entire doctrines based on fabricated footnotes from the man who has a doctorate in prayer from an unaccredited institution built by the guy who founded the New Apostolic Reformation. So, this is not okay and it's not just Damon Thompson. Jesse Duplantis has quoted this footnote and has said his wife quoted the footnote and then he goes, "Wow, that's even better." And he means even better than the actual Bible that he had just read from John chapter 14. Um And you already mentioned Dutch Sheets, Kevin Zadai, they have all referenced this footnote intentionally to make at least suggestions that this is a doctrine that people should believe in. >> Yeah. But, at least Brian Simmons is qualified to be able to make comments on this. >> Get the passion of God in your heart and if you you so choose to read the Passion Translation, that's great. People have all kinds of questions. I'm not going to get into that at this point about you know, who do I think I am to translate? The answer is nobody. Uh Who gave you permission to do this? Uh visitation from Jesus. Um How dare you do this and you're not a Hebrew or Greek scholar? Uh granted. I want to go after a demon spirit that's been molesting you, that's been harming you and this demon spirit is called disqualifi- disqualification. You know, I don't know much, but I know this from personal experience that I have had to face disqualification in my life. I had a good friend that was a Greek scholar and he just rebuked me to my face and said, "You have no business going to to translate the Bible if you don't if you don't have at least a doctorate in Greek." >> Yeah. So, that that whole message you can you can watch it on YouTube. It is a whole sermon that is meant to say it doesn't matter whether or not you're qualified if you're called. So, he's appealing and you heard it right there. He's appealing to this personal visitation from Jesus that he uh he claims that he had. That is the entire basis for his qualification to write this thing which is plagiarized. And obviously, it feels at this point we're maybe beating a dead horse here. But this this actually really really matters. The whole reason the whole reason he's doing this is because of the supernatural claims. So, we get criticized by Chris Monahan as like, "Well, you're not charismatic, so you don't believe in these things." We are charismatics. We do believe in these things when they're legit. And but when you are using this to bypass reason, when you're using these when you are manipulating people's belief in the supernatural in order to scam them out of their money. But with the And I'd say that as my opinion. Um where you are releasing these book by book by book. And what's the net result is you don't just buy one Bible. You pay whatever amount for, you know, letters from heaven or, you know, grace and glory, these packages of the Bible that he's releasing piecemeal. And then he's correcting along the way. It's like, do you get a refund for having the the the one with all the fraud and all the plagiarism? No, you don't actually. I don't think so. Um but maybe some people should try. >> Yeah, so so, you know, this is this is this is the this is the equivalent of you know, the I don't know peanut butter company, right? Can peanut butter have salmonella? Whatever foods can have salmonella, right? The company sells them en masse in the grocery store. People begin to get sick. And they say the next batch of peanut butter or whatever is not going to have salmonella. But for all the people that already have a jar of the peanut butter, they're just going to have to eat it and be okay with it. Mhm. No, you have to do a mass recall. You have to get that out of people's hands cuz somebody somewhere in Southeast Asia or whatever cuz by the way, the Passion Translation is being translated into numerous other languages. Which means the footnotes are being translated into numerous other languages. So some pastor in South Korea who doesn't watch the minor prophets is going to keep talking about Procleto, the redeemer who ends the curse 10 years from now because he has the edition that he got whenever that stuff was still in there. And so this is basically unfixable. But again, the the irony of um my friend's a Greek scholar and he rebuked me. Well, good for his friend. Well done for rebuking someone who um does not have the qualifications or the capacity to do this. Um that probably wasn't easy if they truly were friends. But the irony of all of this. What does the plagiarism prove? It proves that when convenient Brian draws on people with numerous PhDs, takes their work, puts it into his own work. And so the idea that like, well, I I don't need all these scholars. I'm qualified because Jesus visited me. But actually, I'm going to have to use all of their work frequently almost every other line uh in my translation. And so maybe we'll just after we're not going to do a big section like we did before, but maybe we'll just do like one or two more examples so you can see we actually did not stretch out two or three examples that are the only examples in there, you know, and we just kind of stretched them out. I could go for 12 hours straight. I could do a mega marathon stream. And it would be 12 hours straight of clear cut and dry copying. So maybe we'll do one or two more examples. >> Yeah, I liked this one that you posted on X. And this is a quote from Luke 7. So David, do you want to read this in in a standard translation here? >> Yeah, yeah. So so um Here. Lest people think we have some kind of ESV agenda, which we really don't. Let's let's do the NASB here. Um They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another and say, "We played the flute for you and you did not dance. We sang a song of mourning and you did not weep." Okay? So, this is musical imagery, right? This is This is the flute. This is dancing. Uh this is like, "Hey, when I play this song, you get mad at me and when I play this song, you know, that that's the point as you as you uh as you emphasized, John Mark. But then in the Living Bible, which again 1971, okay? This is like 50-plus years ago. "They are like a group of children who complain to their friends, 'You don't like it if we play wedding and you don't like it if we play funeral.'" Now, you've already noticed how significantly different. Basically, none of that is in any other translation. The word complaining is not in there. It's just the word say. You say You say to one another. And then you see the TPT, "You're like children playing games on the playground." So, this is what Brian does. He He plagiarizes, but he just adds in a couple words to expand on the image that the original text had. So, the playing games on the playground is his little insertion here. "Complaining to friends, 'You don't like it when we want to play wedding and you don't like it when we want to play funeral.'" I mean, it it could not be any more cut and dry than that. None of this comes from the original text. Brian didn't even bother to look at the Greek cuz he doesn't read Greek. He has no idea what the Greek says. He's just going on what seems interesting to him in the moment, maybe what he's familiar with. Um he was actually saved in 1971, which was the year the Living Bible was released. So, that Bible was huge in the Jesus People Movement. Maybe that was Brian's kind of uh most, you know, the translation that he kind of started off on. I don't know, but either way, it's plagiarism. >> Yeah. I I mean, it it I mean, I'm just going to read them side by side again. Passion Translation. You're like children playing games on a playground complaining to friends. You don't like it when we play wedding and you don't like it when we play funeral. The Living Bible. They're like a group of children who complain to their friends. You don't like it when we play wedding and you don't like it if we play funeral. It's just like it it's so abundantly clear that he's not translating. And again, this goes to the fundamental claims that he in the frequently asked questions. Um they are they are translating from the quote directly from the original Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic manuscripts. Those are that's the claim that he it it more so over time. And you know eventually you see as you see in the longer video claims to translation actually start to be Well, they disappear. Here's the key. They disappear from the copyright section. Which is a very legally they know they understand the copyright section is where you get in trouble in court because that's you're literally putting this in the record. But they still on the FAQ have somewhat similar language. Like, "Hey, Brian is translating from the original Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic manuscripts." That's still on the website right this second. That like brazen lie. I mean, it's just the lie of all lies when a guy has said he doesn't know Aramaic that he's translating from Aramaic. But maybe we'll do maybe we'll do I want to do maybe one or two more. This is from um Luke 11. Luke 11 verse 11. You'll have to share it. Now, I want to notice a couple things. Now, this isn't one where every word is is copied from The Message Bible. But every single time where The Passion Translation deviates from every other translation, it matches The Message in a and one of them is is in a comical way. So, first of all, snake on a plate that is such a specific phrase. Again, occurs nowhere in the text. Snake on his plate, a serving of fish asks for a serving of fish. Then, a little girl asked for an egg. There's two things here. One, in every single other English version in existence the gender is male throughout the text. Every single English version, but you notice we have give his son on the top and then give when she asked for an egg and you have his daughter. That's not any That's not in the Greek. That's invented. It's completely invented. So, those are the kind of things that you don't just randomly integrate. So, you notice in The Message that you have his plate and then you have little girl. It's just the word It should just be the word huios, I believe, in in Greek, which is just the word son. But then finally, here's the big one. The word in Greek and the word in every other translation is the word scorpion. If you are familiar with this, you know, like would you give them, you know, a scorpion instead? The Message translation is the only translation in existence that uses the word spider. It literally changes the biological species of the you know, critter in question from a scorpion to a spider. The The Passion translation does the exact same thing. >> Right. Exactly. And minor correction, The Message is not a translation. It is a >> Correct. >> paraphrase. >> The Message Bible, as they call it. Yeah. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah. Exactly. And that would be fine if Brian's claim was, "Hey, I'm just sort of like doing a remix on The Message and I'm just adding some some fiery language and this is just my my take on the Bible." It still would not be good to use because it it perverts the text at at various places that we're going to get into in just a moment. But the reality is um, his claims are fundamentally dishonest. He is lying. He is lying about his process. He's lying about the product that he's serving to you, and that those lies matter because that's how you get Dutch sheets and some of these other these other guys saying, "Well, these are scholarly notes on what is actually being said. Um, this is Dr. Brian Simmons and you see these doctrines start to matriculate throughout the church based upon these things and you don't see the same thing with the message because everybody knows what they're reading when they read the message. They're reading a one guy's opinion about what the Bible says. >> so Eugene Peterson says in the introduction and many other places, like don't preach from this. Don't use this as your main Bible. And yet on the Passion Translation website right now in the FAQ, you'll see, "Why is this a good Bible for serious study? And why should pastors use this from the pulpit?" And you will see a defense of both of those things. And then, uh, I'm I'm just going to do one one more one more really quick example and then we can move on uh cuz again, I I think people hopefully are already convinced, but this is a post that I made on uh on X. Um, and and I say, "How How do we know for sure that Brian Simmons has been plagiarizing?" Uh, one example of hundreds in Hebrews 9:10, Brian plagiarizes a footnote from Francois Du Toit's Mirror Bible including a spelling error in the transliteration of a Greek word. Transliteration is just when you take like Greek letters and put them into English letters, okay? So, here is the Passion Translation uh footnote, which hold on. There we go. The Greek word diorthosis is used only here in the New Testament. It means to set things right, snap a broken bone back into place, um, etc. etc. Okay. So, here's the Mirror Bible footnote. This word diorthosis is only used here in what uh in this one place in the New Testament. So, already, used only here in the New Testament, only used in this one place in the New Testament. So, it's clearly plagiarized. He's clearly copied it straight from this and he kind of rewords the second section, but the big problem here is that Francois Du Toit misspelled the word. There's no such word as diorthosis. This is the actual word in Greek. It's diorthosis. So, if you know the word like orthopedic, right? That word ortho is in there. It it uh It And so, he's literally copied a spelling error. And neither he nor his editors um have the requisite skills to recognize that you've made a basic first-year error in this word. And this kind of stuff happens over and over again to almost a comical uh comical degree. So, this is the kind of thing that is the biggest smoking gun that you don't even know enough to not copy a spelling error in a Greek word uh from a guy who also does not know any Greek. Francois Du Toit. I will say this, um the I we saw this clip uh unearthed by Steve Kozar. And he points out he he grabs this clip of Shawn Bolz of all people talking about the Passion Translation. And what I want to point out is just how the effect of the Passion Translation is it is having this intended effect and partly because it's being drawn from some of the insights that a guy who's a universalist, Francois Du Toit, is is importing into his text. Brian Simmons is taking all of that universalistic soup and he's bringing it ladling out into his translation here. Let's see what Shawn Bolz has to say about the Passion Translation. >> And I'm reading going, this reframes my brain cuz the King James uh Bible, which everything was kind of hinged off of, >> Yeah. >> was written by people who really had bad theology and a bad view of the judgment side of God. >> Right. >> And so, when you read a lot of the stuff, it's in context to punishment and chastisement for Israel versus the kindness of God leading to repentance and giving them all kinds of chances and giving them all kinds of love. And even when he when he rejected them, it was out of a place of love because it wasn't safe. >> So, as as you can see, obviously, this is this is a big deal. Um Shawn Bolz is identifying something about the Passion Translation. It's the very thing that is a selling point about the Passion Translation. It's the very thing that at the core is its core deception. The fact that it is perverting the the truth of God's word. It's one thing if you are to honestly read what what the Holy Spirit has given us in the word of God. And you were to read it from a faithful translation into English. And you were to come to the opinion, you know what? Uh you'd still be wrong. But you know what? I just don't believe God has wrath anymore. At at least you're coming about your wrong opinion in an honest way. But what we're getting here is that Brian Simmons is perverting the text in order so that uh a hapless Christian who just happens to to come across this this uh version in YouVersion and says, "Oh, you know what? I just love the Passion Translation cuz it's very emotional and it sort of appeals to me." And they don't even have the opportunity to make an honest decision about what they believe the text actually says. >> Yeah. So, uh this is a wonderful opportunity, and I'm going to share my screen. So, you heard what Shawn Bolz said. Um he specifically says, basically, that he likes the Passion Translation because it has a theological agenda. Because he feels like in his mind he feels like the King James version had a theological agenda and and whatever. I'm not even interested in that discussion. But, what we're going to see is, okay. So, let's just go to the NASB here, and I'll bring the font size up. This is Hebrews 12 5 through 7. And have you forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor faint when you are punished by him. For whom the Lord loves, he disciplines, and he punishes every son whom he accepts." Now again, if you were raised, or maybe still are in the paradigm of unpunishable that we've talked about, you know, John Mark you have talked about at length on this channel, then this sounds like an unthinkably almost heretical thing to say. And again, there's different ways uh some translations say chasten, some translations say scourge, but the problem for the unpunishable paradigm is that the word in Greek is very strong. It is the word scourge. It is the word punish, chastise. And you'll notice that's the very word that Shawn Bolz uses. He goes, "The King James is all about chastisement." Well, this is the New Testament where um the writer of the book of Hebrews is saying, "The one that the Lord loves, he chastises." Well, I think I'll give you 10 guesses as to whether or not the Passion Translation is accurate here. So, if we go to um verse uh 5 through 7, "And you have forgotten his encouraging words." So, already we're just we're just totally throwing the the meaning out the window. "Encouraging words spoken to you as his children, he said, 'My child, don't underestimate the value of the discipline and training of the Lord, or get depressed when he has to correct you.'" And here's the big one. "For the Lord's training of your life is the evidence of his faithful love, and when he draws you to himself, it proves you are his delightful child." That is so unspeakably twisted and perverted as far as the actual words of scripture. Now, how do you think he got around perverting them? Well, this right here, the Aramaic word for draws you to himself is nagad, which can mean to scourge or to attract, to draw or tug the heart. The Greek is the Lord scourges every son he receives. Now, as I think you've known based on our work thus far, the Aramaic also says scourges. It's the same word. Every single scholarly Aramaic translation here says scourges, chastises, or punishes. This footnote is plagiarized from David Bauscher's original Aramaic New Testament, where he then inserts his pure opinion, where he just says the re- basically the reason I've done this is because God wouldn't do that. And Brian looks at that, plagiarizes it without, you know, leaving the opinion that I think he shares in common with David Bauscher, leaves that in Bauscher's work, but plagiarizes this word study that's completely fabricated and invented. Why? To inject and the unpunishable Bethel God is always in a good mood theology into the text in the very passage that would utterly rebuke that theology. Right. >> This is why it it matters. It's not just the plagiarism. It the plagiarism is unto the end of the theological perversion. I In that same video supercut that Steve Kozar put together that I I just shared a little bit. Um he he found a clip of Doug Givens giving a critique of the Passion Translation where he says, um in I think it is it John 14 where he says, "Greater works you shall do because I go to my father." Well, you know, in the Greek it it's the word for works. I don't speak Greek. David, you could tell me. >> It No, it Yeah, it's Yeah, it's uh Well, so the word ta ta erga, you know, ergon, which is the word for uh for for work, can't it can mean miracles in in the Gospel of John. But to to read it in there, what's funny is it's it's basically two verses before the redeemer who ends the curse. So, in the >> Is that right? >> Uh yeah, so it's John it's John 14 uh 12 or 14:13, right? Where he says, you know, greater works. And and yeah, he says, "You'll do greater miracles." or whatever. And again, that's there's two judgment calls being made there. One is rendering the word works as miracles. Um and the other one is when you make it miracles and you say greater miracles, you are also assuming the uh qualitative reading of the passage, which is that these are actually going to be more impressive or more dramatic miracles than the ones Jesus did. Instead of the quantitative reading, which is because the Gospel will spread to the whole earth and there will be tens of millions of Christians, there will be tens of millions more miracles than Jesus did because the people of God are just ex- you know, participating in the inbreaking of the kingdom. And so, again, these are decisions being made. And that happens over and over again, even in the tiny things. Theological opinions, most of them either severely heterodox or even potentially heretical, are being inserted from the text and most of the time Bry- Bryant doesn't even bother to invent his own uh heterodox reading of the text. He finds another heterodox or heretical reading of the text and just copies it. >> Right. Right. So, one of the sources that he is drawing from is the Mirror Bible. And one of the reasons that I want to highlight this is when it comes to charismatics, many of us are very intuitive thinkers, right? 2 + 2 = 4. We're like, well, does 2 + 2 feel like it equals 4? You know, what's the spirit behind the four that you're actually arriving to? And honestly, uh this is this is there are many strengths to this type of personality. I've noticed for a long time that there's a there's a large congregation of people of a certain personality type that exist in various denominations. And it's almost like um various denominations have their own sort of personality that is either I don't know what comes first, the chicken or the egg here. It's like either a bunch of people with this personality formed this denomination and they all kind of sort of think this way by virtue of their culture, or if it is something else is going on. Um Now, charismatics this is a plus. This is why charismatics have all the good worship music. Is because we we think intuitively and there there's there's a certain personality type that is attracted to this type of thing. But this is why we need this is why we need each other. This is why we need the whole body of Christ. It's because there's there's people who are intuitive and people who are intuitive, I believe, can be more in touch with the communication that's maybe coming from the Holy Spirit. Or they'll be more spiritually sensitive in various ways. And so they'll listen to a video like ours or they'll think, "Well, I don't like Mike's spirit." Or I don't like the penumbra that is coming off of this video that the Minor Prophets is putting out. Like there's something behind this. This is where maybe some of that thinking that we consider to be discernment is actually a little bit broken. We are like, "Well, I don't like what you're saying cuz it's critical, but I really love this rendering of he offered everyone glory cuz that makes me feel really well." You see, Patricia King just like, "Whoa, you know." Reacting to this in a very emotional way, not realizing that that rendering he is deriving from a guy who may be demonized. I honestly think there's a real demonic force behind some of these things. And then we see he's also getting some of his renderings from Francois Du Toit. And if you're thinking about there are doctrines of demons, this is some of the things that Francois Du Toit has to teach. So, >> Francois Du Toit, we don't have time to get into a whole thing about him. Mike has done a good review of his translation. Mike said it's, you know, basically the worst Bible version he's ever ever read. And and I would agree with that. But here's what I want you I want to show you. We just said Brian play drives a footnote from David Boscher where you talked about the intuitive thing, Jean Marc. David Boscher just goes, "I don't think God would do that and therefore I'm changing the Bible." I mean, that's just the truth. That's that's what he did. He goes, "A good father doesn't scourge his children." Right? So, he's I guess got like a gentle parenting kind of view of God, you know, God's God's doing gentle parenting. And whatever, have your have your private opinions about God, but don't don't put them in the text. And so, here's what I want people to see. One of the main sources that Brian is copying from both in the translation and in the footnotes in the epistles because that's basically all that Du Toit has translated. He hasn't translated the whole New Testament. He is copying from a man who is willing to brazenly insert false theological agendas into the text without apology. Now, you'll see this is a Facebook post from Francois Du Toit. He's he says, "Someone asked, is being gay okay with God? In him we live and move and have our being. Our being is wrapped up in God, inseparably so. Being gay or being being gay or being straight." So, he puts those in quotation marks, right? "We are one and we are loved equally so. Christ defines us, not being male or female. It is against the law to be gay in 69 countries. Sadly, too, it's against grace to be gay in countless churches. There is no law against love." It would be one thing if Francois Du Toit decided that he was going to have his private belief and be, you know, gay affirming or whatever. The problem is, as I can demonstrate to you, he has no problem completely changing his translation over time, kind of like Brian Simmons. Here's the first edition of the Mirror Bible in 1 Corinthians 6:10. You'll notice he actually translates it correctly the first time, somewhat. I mean, in general. People who continue to engage in prostitution, idolatry, adultery, homosexuality in any of its forms. Wow, okay. That seems like he's willing to actually translate what what it says there. Well, here's the latest version. People who continue to engage in prostitution, idolatry, adultery, sexual perversions. Completely all reference to the same-sex nature of this activity is completely deleted. Well, he does it again. Uh Romans 1, right? These are the famous texts that people have to wrestle with on the issue of sexuality. Uh by being confused about their maker, I What a ridiculous phrase. They became confused about themselves. Women became snared in a passion for one another. Likewise, the men became inflamed with unnatural attraction to men. This is the original edition. That's fairly close to what Paul says. Well, here's the latest version. Uh men and women alike became inflamed with perverted fantasies. This brought about an intense striving and laboring in the pursuit of the illusion of a distorted image, which are clear symptoms of an inferior estimate of oneself. >> So, David, question. Do some of these insights make it into The Passion Translation? >> Not from these particular passages, I don't think. I'd have to double-check in Romans 1, uh and I could do that quickly, but uh you know, I I think Brian actually is solid on this issue. So, again, I don't want to take things further than they need to be. So, I'm I'm not saying that Brian also has an affirming agenda or whatever in his translation. But, what's the point? The underlying way that Francois du Toit gets there is this idea that we're all already included in Christ. Everyone is already saved. Everyone is already regenerated. Um everyone is already in Christ. They just have to open their eyes and realize that they're already in Christ. So that does come in, for example, in Romans 8. Where um in the footnote Brian includes the most ridiculous I mean no one with the less than a first-year education in Greek would do what Brian and Francois what he copies Francois doing in Romans 8. It Romans 8:19 says, "If anyone does not have the spirit of God, he does not belong to Christ." Which is an intense passage. It means it it it totally contradicts Francois du Toit's theology that we're all all already included in Christ. Uh no. Paul says there are people who don't have the spirit of God. And if you don't have the spirit of God, he goes on to say, "You're not a child of God." Right? So this is strong language Paul. There is an in and an out to uh in Paul's theology of those who have the spirit and those who don't. But in the footnote Brian copies Francois and he says there's an alternate translation that could that could mean whoever does not have the spirit of Christ, he cannot be himself. So we go from if you don't have the spirit of Christ, you are excluded from Christ. You are not in the family of God. You are not a child of God. To you know the problem is you really need to be yourself. And you can't be yourself if you don't have the spirit. >> Man, it is it is the moral of every like 1990s teen >> [laughter] >> movie. Just be yourself. >> therapeutic deism put into a translation. >> This is how some people think. They just don't like how something comes across. They don't like what they perceive to be a spirit behind something. And so they'll just not avail themselves of the evidence. And my appeal is that you should be questioning your discernment. If you believe that Mike Winger is operating out of some sort of evil spirit, but the Passion Translation is actually, you know, pure, and I've had encounters with God, and you don't realize that the very thing insights that lead you towards this Patricia King Wo moment are actually taken from somebody who may be operating out of a demonic spirit. We don't know. You know, maybe we don't know. But I'll just say it's dark. It's dark. And I I think that this goes to one of the major issues within the charismatic movement that I think needs to be investigated, honestly. Uh Matthew Eskivel, he did an excellent job of saying, "You know what? I trusted these leaders. I And my trust in them blinded me to the truth." These were people that I held in high esteem, and I thought that their character was above reproach, and so I wouldn't even question whether or not there was something that was up, no matter the level of evidence that was brought. Listen, we all will be fooled at some point in our lives, every single one of us. The most discerning among us will be fooled at some point in our lives. It's not a shameful thing to realize that, you know, what? I've been duped. But if we harden our hearts to the reality that maybe there's something up, maybe there's something up. If we don't If we're not humble enough to investigate our own emotions, our our own motivations, our own preconceived biases, if we will not do the work of saying, "You know, what? I need to investigate. I I just need to I need to question my own discernment." If we will not go there, we wall ourselves off from ever being able to perceive truth. >> Yeah, and I would I would say and I I agree with I agree with what you're saying and I think you're going to agree with what I'm going to say here, which is when we say you don't need to feel shame, I think in terms of, you know, you don't need to think like I'm not a Christian, I don't know God, I need to rethink all of my beliefs or you know, I'm a I'm a terrible person because I didn't catch this. But what I will say is one of the my favorite phrases that Matt Escu Matt Escu Escu used is like I'm ashamed. And I think within the charismatic movement we have built kind of a theology that um effectively, God will never send you negative emotions. Right? And and kind of like the experience of shame. And again, we know Romans 8 that there's no condemnation, right? And this is related as Paul's developing, that's related to the law specifically, right? There's no condemnation from the law for those who have received the righteousness of Christ. However, there is a godly sorrow that leads to repentance. And um it's funny that the Sean Boles of the world are always he does it in that video where he says that it's the kindness of God that leads to repent. It's also godly sorrow that leads us to repentance. And so that experience of shame, yes, if we're not careful, the enemy can get in and twist it in a way that is not from God. But actually, the Holy Spirit might want us to lean into that experience of feeling ashamed to teach us and dare I say discipline us as the book of Hebrews says, to chasten us because that same book of Hebrews says that we're having our senses trained to discern good and evil. So think of this as part of your senses being trained and we failed one training exercise, we're not going to fail the next one. And so when the next guy comes out with some weirdo one-man translation, what the beautiful thing is, you're not going to fall for it again. And you're going to be like, nope, I've been there and I'm going to warn people against this. And so this is a way that God develops us. This is part of the journey of following Jesus is yes, we we are going to feel shame about some of our actions, but that shame is to be turned towards God in a way that he uses it to discipline us so that our senses are trained and so that we don't fall for it again and so that we can also help other people when they stumble into things that we've stumbled into. >> Right. That's right. Yeah, this is my appeal. Um, the petition's down below. Please sign the petition. We want YouVersion to get rid of this because we do not want this this is people are like, well, are you going to go after logos or are you going to go after Olive Tree or whatever? Um, there you have to pay. You have to go out of your way to purchase it. YouVersion is the only place that I know of where uh, the Passion Translation is free and where a new Christian or a Christian who doesn't know can be uh, lulled in and deceived by reading reading the Passion Translation there. Uh, we want to we want to raise the age of consent, so to speak. Um, you know, consume at your own risk and and also our hope is that YouVersion will do the right thing and will apply pressure on Brian and Broadstreet to end this fraud that is perpetrated on the body of Christ. This has got you know, there's going to be false teachers everywhere, but um, I I I think that I love some of the responses. I received an email today from a pastor in Scotland who has been emailing uh, some of the endorsers of the Passion Translation uh, with uh, with just great ferocity and strength and you know, God bless you as I believe his uh, church is um, in Falkirk and it's like Falkirk Full Gospel or whatever. Like shout out Pastor Thomas. Um, just doing doing God's work because and his email to me he said, I am I'm infuriated that I've been deceived by some of the people that I'm paraphrasing him, but I've been deceived by some of the people that I trusted. And this is this is a good and godly response. We should be angry that within our own movement as charismatics, we've allowed so much deception, so much fraud. We'll be accountable to for what we do when we become aware of this, how we respond. And so you know, shout out to Luke Castlemyer, to to Matthew Eskivel, to Pastor Thomas from from Falkirk in in Scotland. Um man, just good godly responses. This is the response of a shepherd. We're not here, we're not out for blood. We're not out for for vengeance, we're out for truth, repentance, and restoration for the church. And may God do this. May God bring conviction and repentance to those who have who have perpetrated this lie. And may he restore to us the the sacred truth of his word and a and a love for the scriptures, the ones that were inspired by the Holy Spirit. And so may God bless you guys.
