## 🧭 Overview
Issue #171 covers Matt Mullenweg’s experiment to simplify WP.com pricing and positioning—framed as “WordPress without limits”—and juxtaposes that announcement with a revived critique of WPMU Dev over historical domain naming. The issue also highlights Checkout Summit updates, the Influence WP community, and a curated set of news and resources.
## ⚡ WP Simplified: “WordPress without limits”
- Claim: The experiment runs “until August 25th, 2025 (at least)” and promises “WordPress, without the asterisk, without limits,” designed for both novices and developers.
- Interpretation: All paid accounts receive the full WP.cloud-like experience with extensive customization and control.
Direct pull:
- “It’s WordPress, without the asterisk, without limits, implemented in a way that’s intuitive and safe for novice users, while also being extremely powerful for developers.”
## 🧩 Cybersquatting or history lesson? The WPMU/WP MU thread
- The announcement leads with accusations against WPMU Dev of cybersquatting, which the author argues distracts from the product news.
- Historical context:
- 2014 interview: Matt said “MU” had been “co-opted” via WPMU.org (later redirecting to wpmudev.com); this coincided with the MU project becoming Multisite.
- 2013 post: James Farmer explained retiring WPMU.org branding due to internal brand confusion; domain acquired in 2008 “to be about WordPress MU.”
- The author questions the necessity and fairness of surfacing a one-sided allegation in a product update.
## 💬 Conclusion and disclosure
- Author’s view: Users likely weren’t confused by “MU” (also used for Must-Use plugins) and the naming dispute is orthogonal to the simplification experiment.
- Disclosure: Long-time customer of both WPMU Dev and Automattic; not a legal expert; no financial conflicts.
## 🛒 Checkout Summit update
- Call for speakers and sponsors open; anticipated date in 2026 to be confirmed.
- Ongoing community engagement via polls and feedback.
## 🤝 Influence WP community
- A community focused on connecting product owners, service providers, and consumers; intentionally non-affiliate and relationship-forward.
## 📰 Weekly News & Tips roundup
Highlights include:
- Proposal to expand Core Block Library (support + caution).
- Leadership news at Rocket.net.
- WooCommerce CLI importer coming.
- “10 Years of Coupon Affiliates” reflections.
- AI/security talk with Tim Nash.
- AI/automation in Woo release process.
- Kinsta API for agency automation.
- The AI Search Manual for relevance engineering.
- Menu Designer block-based navigation (also on GitHub).
- Testing AI-built dashboards with Bolt.
- Human Made’s accessibility knowledgebase for WordPress.
- WooCommerce 10.0/10.1 demos.
- Rocket.net in the 2025 Inc. 5000.
- Deeper look into WordPress trademark enforcement by the Plugins Team.
## 📝 Summary:
Issue #171 announces WP.com’s pricing and product simplification test promising “no asterisks” for paid accounts, effectively aligning with WP.cloud’s full power. The author critiques the decision to reopen claims of cybersquatting against WPMU Dev in the same announcement, reframing it as historically complex and arguably irrelevant to the product news. The issue rounds out with updates on Checkout Summit, the people-centric Influence WP community, and a dense links section spanning accessibility, AI, WooCommerce improvements, and trademark enforcement.
## 📖 Main Content:
- WP.com Simplification: Positions WordPress.com as a unified, powerful platform for both beginners and developers, reducing plan confusion and promising safe, intuitive UX with advanced capabilities.
- Trademark/Naming Friction: Revisits the WPMU/WP MU naming history and suggests the term “co-opted” doesn’t equate to contemporary cybersquatting claims; encourages more balanced framing in community communications.
- Ecosystem Movements: Community-led events (Checkout Summit), non-affiliate community building (Influence WP), and practical tooling news (CLI importer, Kinsta API, Menu Designer) signal ongoing maturation and specialization in the WordPress space.
### 🗒️ Notes
- WP.com experiment
- Runs until at least 2025-08-25.
- Goal: remove limits/asterisks for paid users; parity with WP.cloud benefits.
- Audience: novices and developers; emphasizes safety + power.
- Naming/trademark commentary
- Matt’s “co-opted” comment (2014) tied to WPMU.org.
- James Farmer’s 2013 rationale: brand confusion; domain acquired to cover WP MU.
- Author argues the accusation distracts and risks bias in a product post.
- Checkout Summit
- Calls open; community feedback loops ongoing; 2026 target date.
- Influence WP
- Community prioritizes relationships over affiliate incentives; value for partners and consumers.
- Weekly links emphasize
- Accessibility initiatives (Human Made).
- WooCommerce performance and release automation.
- Tools for agencies and block-first workflows.
- Trademark guideline enforcement transparency.

## 🗣️ Paraphrase:
1) Original idea: “It’s WordPress, without the asterisk, without limits... intuitive and safe for novice users, while also being extremely powerful for developers.”
- Paraphrase: The new test aims to deliver a no-compromise WordPress.com—simple and secure enough for newcomers, yet offering the full depth and flexibility advanced builders expect.
2) Author’s critique of the announcement’s framing:
- Paraphrase: Leading a product update with a historical accusation muddies the message. The dispute over WPMU naming is separate from the simplification experiment and could unfairly bias readers without comprehensive context.

Hi, friend. 👋
Welcome to Issue #171 of **Loop WP!**
[Last week](https://newsletter.loopwp.com/p/issue-170-loop-wp), the UK’s Online Safety Act shook up local content in a VPN-first world, plus we looked at Remote Data Blocks in WordPress and Elementor’s Ally accessibility plugin.
**This week,** Matt Mullenweg announced an experiment with a more simplified wp.com pricing structure, but there was more to his announcement. We round things off with some Checkout Summit and Influence WP.
Let’s go! 👇
#### WP Simplified
(Read the link above; it’s important for the next bit.)
Matt describes this test, which is running until August 25th, 2025 (at least), as:
“It’s WordPress, without the asterisk, without limits, implemented in a way that’s intuitive and safe for novice users, while also being extremely powerful for developers.”
⚡️ Essentially, [every single paid account gets that full WP.cloud experience](https://wordpress.com/blog/2025/08/12/for-a-limited-time-unlock-plugin-power-on-personal-premium-plans/?utm_source=newsletter.loopwp.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=issue-171-loop-wp) with full customisation and control.
##### Cyber Squatting or More To It?
😳 Now, friend, remember I said to read that [first link](https://ma.tt/2025/08/simplification/?utm_source=newsletter.loopwp.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=issue-171-loop-wp) from Matt about the announcement, and it was important?
**Matt spends the first part of his announcement accusing another company (WPMU Dev) of cyber squatting.**
🕵️♂️ I am not a legal expert, but I wanted to dig a bit further as I couldn’t see any reason (only Matt knows) to bring up a historical issue that (in my opinion) hurts an otherwise positive announcement.
###### Naming/“WPMU” Domain (Implied Trademark Friction??)
Perhaps Matt’s comment has more to do with Automattic’s recent increased enforcement of trademark infringements?
* In a [July 7th, 2014, interview](https://archive.wordpress.org/interviews/2014_07_07_Mullenweg.html?utm_source=newsletter.loopwp.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=issue-171-loop-wp), Matt says the “MU” name had been “co-opted by **James Farmer,** who had registered [WPMU.org](https://WPMU.org?utm_source=newsletter.loopwp.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=issue-171-loop-wp) (now redirects to wpmudev.com),” citing this as one reason the WordPress MU project name was retired when it merged into core as Multisite.
This is the closest on-record statement (that I could find) from Matt that maps to a cybersquatting-style complaint (his words are “co-opted,” not “cybersquatting”).
* On December 4th, 2013, [James Farmer explained why](https://wpmudev.com/blog/goodbye-wpmu-org-hello-wpmu-devs-blog/?utm_source=newsletter.loopwp.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=issue-171-loop-wp) they **retired the WPMU.org brand** and moved the blog under [wpmudev.com](https://wpmudev.com?utm_source=newsletter.loopwp.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=issue-171-loop-wp).
James noted he’d **acquired wpmu.org in 2008** “to be about WordPress MU” and acknowledged brand confusion over the years within WPMU Dev’s own products and services, **not WordPress.com itself.**
🫠 Why can’t we have a nice announcement without unnecessary negativity?
#### Conclusion
💡 I doubt users were confused by MU (which is also used for "[Must-Use](https://developer.wordpress.org/advanced-administration/plugins/mu-plugins/?utm_source=newsletter.loopwp.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=issue-171-loop-wp)" plugins), and **I doubt they even know or care** that there was a WordPress MS.
🤷♂️ So, I don’t know why Matt even brings this issue up in his announcement, which (in my opinion) has nothing to do with it.
Why do I go into detail, friend?
**I don’t think it’s fair to the WordPress community or readers of Matt’s announcement that such a one-sided accusation/statement is made and potentially taken as truth.**
💡 There’s more on WordPress trademark infringement in the “News & Tips” at the bottom of this email.
##### Disclaimer
I am a long-time WPMU Dev customer (although this accusation is new to me), and I’m also a long-time customer of Automattic products.
The opinions expressed in this newsletter are my own; I don’t make any financial gain, nor am I a legal expert, so my limited research may be incomplete.
#### Before You Go
I’ve a couple of quick updates on **a new dedicated (independent) WooCommerce conference** and a WordPress community with a difference. 👇
##### Checkout Summit
I first mentioned the **Checkout Summit** back in [Issue 167](https://newsletter.loopwp.com/p/issue-167-loop-wp), and since then, [Rodolfo](https://x.com/rmelogli?utm_source=newsletter.loopwp.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=issue-171-loop-wp) has put in a tremendous amount of effort, which you can read in the [Checkout Summit News](https://checkoutsummit.com/news/?utm_source=newsletter.loopwp.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=issue-171-loop-wp) (Rodolfo has also been [running polls and asking for feedback](https://x.com/rmelogli?utm_source=newsletter.loopwp.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=issue-171-loop-wp) on X).
The call for [speakers](https://checkoutsummit.com/speakers/?utm_source=newsletter.loopwp.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=issue-171-loop-wp) and [sponsors](https://checkoutsummit.com/sponsors/?utm_source=newsletter.loopwp.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=issue-171-loop-wp) is now open, and (hopefully) there will be a confirmed date in 2026 announced this week.
##### Influence WP
Back in [Issue 146](https://newsletter.loopwp.com/p/issue-146-loop-wp), when I first linked to Influence WP, [Ryan](https://x.com/PineDigitalCo?utm_source=newsletter.loopwp.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=issue-171-loop-wp) was building a community with a difference.
A community connecting product owners, service providers, and consumers while being a one-stop shop for all things WordPress.
Ryan **doesn’t earn affiliate commission** from promoting a plugin or service; instead, the focus is more about people and building connections.
**It’s a great deal for both Partners and Consumers.**
(And no, friend, none of these links for Influence WP are affiliate links. 😂)
