⭐ FAIR Package Manager: A benign revolution for WordPress and beyond 🚀
The Linux Foundation just dropped something that will change the WordPress game: the FAIR Package Manager. https://github.com/fairpm
⏱️ And frankly, it's about time.
What FAIR brings to the table:
For hashtag#WordPress: Decentralized plugin/theme distribution that eliminates single points of failure when centralized repositories go down. No more watching your updates disappear because one entity had a bad day (or year).
For hashtag#OpenSource CMSs: A federated model with cryptographic security, GDPR compliance, and supply chain protection that you can adopt for any platform. Think APT for the web.
For hashtag#communities: Neutral governance under the Linux Foundation, led by WordPress veterans like Ryan McCue (REST API creator), Mika E. (former plugin repo manager), and Carrie Dils.
🍴 FAIR IS NOT A FORK.
FAIR is what Mathias Bolt Lesniak calls a "benign revolution that contributes to a software ecosystem without having to break, or break free from, anything."
⏩ This isn't the Silicon Valley "move fast and break things" mentality.
👍 It's "be constructive and build things... on the shoulders of giants." The Four Freedoms defining open source mean projects can grow independently without drama, politics, or scorched earth tactics.
The future?
Imagine federated repositories across the entire open web stack: WordPress today, hashtag#Drupal and hashtag#TYPO3 tomorrow, and maybe your favorite headless hashtag#CMS next week. When 40% of the web runs on one platform, making it more resilient benefits everyone.
Sometimes the most revolutionary thing you can do is build infrastructure that actually works—transparently, securely, and without drama.
Props to the 300+ contributors who built this!
The revolution will be federated. 🌐

The Drupal community, and the broader PHP ecosystem has already firmly adopted Composer as a package manager, which already supports a decentralised model. While Paxkagist is the main source of packages, Drupal has its own package registry, and there are others. So the question I would ask is why do we need another package manager?

Aaron McHale It's a great question, and we used Composer as an inspiration. Most packages are on Packagist, which has centralised control, and new repositories have to be added by users - FAIR builds a discovery system modelled on Bluesky's AT Proto on top, so users never have to think about repositories.
We're really interested in seeing ways we can work together though, and my dream would be for the systems to fully integrate! I'm already thinking short-term about ways to a bridge FAIR into Composer.

Certainly, there are many advantages; however, do consider the following cons as well. Interesting to read my friend Anil Gupta's article: https://newsletter.multidots.com/wordcamp-europe-2025-why-fair-is-the-story-every-enterprise-should-watch
WordCamp Europe 2025: Why FAIR is the Story Every Enterprise Should Watch
