#### What is Starshot?
Starshot aims to build the new default version of Drupal that includes refined common features from the contributed project ecosystem to create a great user experience out of the box. It builds on top of recent initiatives like Recipes, Project Browser, and Automatic Updates to take Drupal to new heights.
The result of Starshot will be a fast-moving Open Source product that enables site builders without Drupal experience to easily create a new Drupal site and extend it with pre-packaged recipes, all using their browser. It will guide site builders to install recipes for common use cases and innovative capabilities that are immediately useful for production. It will focus on getting people from install to launch really fast and will bring new people and contributors into Drupal and the Open Web.
#### Starshot FAQ
##### Is Starshot a fork of Drupal?
No. Starshot will be based on the strong foundation of Drupal core, relying on Project Browser and Recipes to achieve a great out-of-the-box experience. It will enable people without Drupal experience to easily create a new Drupal site and extend it with pre-packaged recipes, all using their browser.
##### Is Starshot a rewrite of Drupal?
No. Starshot will be based on the strong foundation of Drupal core, relying on Project Browser and Recipes to achieve a great out-of-the-box experience. It will enable people without Drupal experience to easily create a new Drupal site and extend it with pre-packaged recipes, all using their browser.
##### Is Starshot a distribution (or install profile) of Drupal?
No. Starshot is based on Recipes (see below), which are a lot more flexible than distributions.
##### What are Recipes?
Recipes are supported by new APIs in Drupal 10.3 and 11.0. Recipes are automated site builder steps, in technical terms they are a combination of preconfigured Drupal extensions. Recipes can depend on other recipes, they are composable with other recipes and unlike distributions, do not lock the site in. The eventual goal is that Drupal core itself will offer up recipes instead of install profiles.
##### Is Starshot the product name?
No. The initiative is called Starshot. There is no intention to launch an entirely new brand. The working name for the eventual product is Drupal CMS, but that may still change.
##### Will Starshot replace Drupal core?
No. Drupal core is a strong, stable basis for Starshot. The Recipes API is already in core in 10.3 and 11.0. Until they are added to core, Starshot adds Automated updates/Package manager and Project Browser on top as well. The ideal end state is that Drupal core will be able to install local and remote recipes via Project Browser. Recipes will be available during the installer and while the site is in operation, to support both starter experiences and adding new recipes to existing sites. Drupal core is not going away.
##### Will Drupal core become much bigger?
No. On the contrary. We've been removing modules and features that are not required for a base framework from Drupal core for a while. Recipes allow us to build on the strong core framework features of Drupal and add extensions from the contributed project space without adding them to core. This allows for faster innovation and keeping Drupal core lean. Elements of the Starshot base recipe that are ecosystem-defining (for example [Experience Builder](https://dri.es/evolving-drupal-layout-builder-to-an-experience-builder)) will possibly be added to core, while most others will stay as contributed projects.
##### Who calls the shots?
Starshot's governance is still to be defined, however it will not be the same as the Drupal core committer team. There are opportunities for new contributors here to step up as Starshot focuses on user needs primarily with a product focus.
##### Where is the Starshot code?
There is no code for Starshot yet. We [worked on a prototype](https://github.com/phenaproxima/starshot-prototype) ahead of DrupalCon Portland 2024 to see how far we can get using Recipes. While Starshot will be built based on what we learned from the prototype, the content of the prototype (modules chosen, default configuration applied, sample content included) is not all going to stay the same. The [Starshot project page already exists](https://drupal.org/project/starshot).
##### When will it be ready?
Project lead Dries Buytaert announced that the first releases of Starshot should be available before the end of 2024. This will require lots of people to step up and take action.
##### How often will releases be made?
Starshot releases are not coupled to Drupal core releases, so there may be new releases every month or even more often with new features. The reliance on contributed projects will allow to innovate and improve much faster.
##### Will Drupal.org provide hosted (SaaS) offerings?
Drupal.org itself has no plans currently to offer SaaS hosting for Drupal, however there are and will be offerings from companies providing such functionality. The Drupal Association welcomes your feedback in this area.
