Joost De Valk’s Post ![rw-book-cover](https://static.licdn.com/aero-v1/sc/h/c45fy346jw096z9pbphyyhdz7) [Joost de Valk](https://nl.linkedin.com/in/jdevalk?trk=public_post_feed-actor-name) Google just announced the future of online shopping, and the biggest platform on the web wasn’t even in the room. They call it the "Universal Commerce Protocol", a standard language for AI agents (like Gemini) to browse, negotiate, and buy on behalf of humans. The launch partners? A who’s who of modern commerce: Shopify, BigCommerce, Stripe, Visa, Walmart, Target. The missing name? WordPress (or more specifically: WooCommerce). This silence is dangerous. If WooCommerce doesn't natively "speak" the language of these new AI agents, we risk becoming the "slow lane" of the internet. But this isn't just a problem for store owners. It’s a crisis for the entire ecosystem; the hosting companies, agencies, and plugin developers whose revenue depends on WordPress remaining relevant. If Automattic isn't at the table, who represents the rest of us? I wrote about the "representation gap" and why organizations like FAIR ([fair.pm](https://www.linkedin.com/redir/redirect?url=http%3A%2F%2Ffair%2Epm&urlhash=oQmT&trk=public_post-text)) might be our only path forward.
