Facebook Home, Facebook’s(s fb) home screen replacement app for Android(s goog), appears to be dead, with [The New York Times reporting Friday](http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/06/27/what-happened-to-the-facebook-phone-not-very-much-it-seems/) that Facebook has dismantled the Facebook Home team. A Facebook spokesperson has denied the report. Facebook Home started as an Android skin for Facebook’s unsuccessful phone, [the HTC First](http://gigaom.com/2013/04/09/htc-first-and-my-last-with-facebook-home/), which was both the first and the last phone to come with Facebook Home pre-installed.
Facebook later rolled out software from the HTC First into a separate home screen app available on Google Play. [Facebook Home](http://gigaom.com/2013/04/12/first-impressions-of-facebook-home-for-android-are-a-surprising-like/) wasn’t a smashing success, perhaps because it only worked with selected Samsung and HTC devices. After that, some of its best features — like Chat Heads — made its way [into the mainstream Facebook app for Android](http://www.wired.com/2013/08/cover-feed-in-facebook-app/), and now it looks like the experiment is over.
The app is [still available from Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.home) but is unlikely to be updated in the future, unlike the way Facebook [sunsetted its Poke and camera apps](http://gigaom.com/2014/05/09/facebook-pulls-its-poke-and-camera-apps-from-the-app-store/), which were pulled from the Apple(s aapl) App Store. Facebook Home’s demise comes on the tail of two other tech giants, [Yahoo](http://aviate.yahoo.com/)(s yhoo) and [Samsung](http://gigaom.com/2014/06/17/samsungs-android-homescreen-app-charts-new-terrain/), both of which have released their own Android home screen apps this year.
A Facebook spokesperson has denied that the Facebook Home team has been disbanded, explaining that “there is a team working on Home and the experience is still supported and available in the Google Play store.” The last time Facebook Home was updated for Android was in January.
