He explains how to duplicate, modify, and integrate patterns into posts and templates for more streamlined content creation. Additionally, Matt demonstrates the concept of "pattern overrides," showing how users can lock certain design elements while allowing content edits. This functionality is particularly useful for agencies and freelancers working with clients, ensuring design consistency across a site. ## ๐Ÿ“– Main Content: Matt starts by showing the difference between patterns used in standard pages and posts and those used within templates. Patterns can be duplicated, modified, and even locked so that only specific sections are editable. He emphasizes how this is useful for agencies and freelancers who need to provide a consistent, client-proof design while still offering flexibility. He also walks through how to use pattern overrides, which enable only certain elements like images or headlines to be changed, protecting the overall design. ### ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Notes: - **Patterns in Templates**: Templates are overarching structures that provide consistent layouts across multiple pages or posts. - **Duplicating Patterns**: WordPress default patterns can be duplicated, modified, and categorized for reuse across multiple posts and pages. - **Synced Patterns**: Patterns can be synced across a site, allowing updates to propagate automatically to all instances where the pattern is used. - **Pattern Overrides**: Specific areas of a pattern can be marked for modification, while the rest of the design remains locked. ## ๐Ÿ“– References: - Medeiros, Matt. โ€œManaging WordPress Patterns & Templates ๐Ÿคฏ,โ€ YouTube, 2023. Matt explains that patterns can be reused across various posts and templates, which is particularly useful for freelancers and agencies. By duplicating default WordPress patterns and making minor modifications, users can maintain design consistency while enabling content changes. This strategy ensures that clients wonโ€™t accidentally modify essential design elements. 2. He highlights the use of pattern overrides, a feature that locks specific elements of a pattern, such as design or structure, while allowing content like images or headlines to be modified. This function is crucial when working with clients to prevent design issues while offering flexibility in content updates. ## ๐Ÿ“ฐ Newsletter: ๐Ÿ”ง **WordPress Patterns & Templates Mastery** This week, we dive into the magic of managing WordPress patterns within templates. patterns inside of templates and by virtue of that exploration we're also going to look at templates and patterns if you've never dove into this stuff before you're going to get a little taste of working with templates and patterns today uh but the overall goal is to show you what the difference is when you're working with patterns inside of a template versus using the patterns inside a regular page or post as you're creating content on your site I did receive a question on my patterns override video which we're also going to take look at today and trying to understand like hey I used pattern overrides it was in a template then I couldn't edit it we're going to try to solve some of that confusion today I'm inside 2024 base install um no additional patterns looking at the pattern screen inside the site editor right now first thing we're going to do is duplicate a pattern because as you notice there are uh lock icons across all of these patterns these are the default patterns that ship with 2024 you cannot delete these though you can duplicate them to make your own modifications which is what we're going to do so we're going to click on the little three dots we'll call this Matt's hero you can see I've already done that you can add your own category here if you want uh but I'm going leave those base categories there and you'll also want to check off the synced uh option here that's going to allow you to use this pattern across multiple pages and posts inside templates uh and also for other users using the site they'll have access to that which in the context of uh if you're a freelancer WordPress agency you might create these patterns for your customers to reuse on their blog posts and throughout their site and it's synced across the entire site so that when you make changes to those patterns all of those patterns or all those updates are syncing across all of the patterns across the site so hey customer says you know I really love that call to action that we use for our sales pages but I want to change the font I want to change the spacing well fret notot it's synced so if you make that change to the original pattern it'll sync across uh all patterns throughout the site pattern overrides is for you to punch into that synced pattern and say oh you know what instead of you changing uh this pattern across the entire site I just want you to change the headline or the image because I don't want you to break an entire synced and designed pattern and we're going to take a quick look at that as well so keep that synced we'll hit duplicate and you'll notice that uh WordPress creates this little folder little category called my patterns is where all your patterns are going to end up as you make them in your WordPress site and we're just going to edit this uh really quick and we're going to punch into those two areas that I mentioned before image and headline and enable the override option on those so that we can see that in action uh as we progress throughout the video so select the image Advanced enable overrides and we're just going to call this image enable that click on the headline Advanced enable overrides we'll call it headline very simple and enable if we expand the tray you won't see it here though I do think you see it in posts and Pages where the icon will be a purple color but you'll notice on the right hand side the outline of the headline um box is purple and same goes for the image it also has a purple outline compared to if we hover over uh the paragraph you'll see just the typical default blue I uh outline which is really just to indicate like where that block borders throughout the the layout of the content I don't have a better word for it the purple indicates that we've enabled uh something special and in this case it's it's overrides in those two in those two areas so let's go ahead and save this pattern Matt's hero and we're going to go back to templates and we're going to create a new template and I'm going to start with um single posts or actually you know what I'm going to create a new template we're going to add new template I'm going to create a custom template we'll call it Matt's template because we are very creative here create and I'm going to use the single post template which is what this is here as the base because it gives us everything we need right if we expand um the blocks you'll see it gives us our header template part our footer template part and all the stuff in the middle that we need uh to display content post title featured image Etc this is like the just the standard template uh of a 2024 theme but what we're going to do now is insert that pattern that we've made so we're going to go to uh content plus patterns my pattern and insert Matt's hero pattern and from the broader perspective save that every time we use this template on a blog post let's say that that pattern will show up um and that's useful because maybe you want to switch um some of your blog posts to use a different template uh to include additional stuff additional content in this case like a call to action a hero section maybe you're doing your typical marketing 101 you've got a blog post you want to have a call to action a newsletter sign up you're selling a product and perhaps this hero pattern that we created has all of that relevant pertinent information in there buy now button product information newsletter signup box whatever it is it's going to be below the content of your blog post every time you assign a blog post this particular template now you could do the same exact thing on the default single post template so it just works throughout the entire site which is what I do a lot on my uh WordPress sites but I'm just showing this as an example so we can see default template layout versus a custom uh template layout so let's go to a blog post add new post this is a test we're testing content and templates I'm going to copy and paste this and just put a bunch of stuff in there that way we can just see it visually and understand uh what's happening just visually represents it a little bit better so we'll hit publish we'll view the post now remember I haven't touched anything I haven't changed the template this is still the default template so post title content and then nothing before the comments we'll go back to edit the post pull up the settings and what we'll do here is swap the template so you can see right here template is set to single post that's the default template for WordPress we'll select swap template and we'll see Matt's template right here and you can even see it in the preview where it's previewing the text and the difference between the two uh single uh well single with sidebar this one in particular but you'll see Matt's template and you'll see that pattern that we inserted when we were building this template so let's select it and now this is where things might get confusing for folks especially if you've not seen this before the template you you don't see the pattern here right you don't see that pattern that we just built templates sort of just operate in the background as the overall structure um for the particular template or page or post that you're working on WordPress is removing itself trying to get itself out of the way uh so that like the template parts and the building part of the site when you're writing content it's a very uh publishing first experience where that template is there uh you just don't see it while you're edit editing because it doesn't want to get in the way if we preview this post having switched to my new template now that that pattern shows up along with uh you know whatever else was in that template comments uh other template Parts whatever it is but you just don't see it while you're editing which is obviously can get confusing and a lot of folks thinking well I want to try this new pattern override thing because yeah I wanted to show up on every post and I just want to go in and punch in and and change those elements there so that I don't have to um you change the whole pattern right I think that's maybe where that user had that question and that's where the confusion sets in but when you're working with those patterns certainly you can make patterns put them in templates and then use those templates as like this Global setting on your pages and posts how pattern overrides really comes into play and I think how maybe 99% of its use case is really good is if you are inserting that pattern into your content as you are editing it so we'll just do a quick command and we'll do do Matt's hero it's already there and pull it in now really briefly you saw like this purple effect maybe if you saw it really quick uh fade in and Fade Out in the areas that I can modify um through pattern overrides and if we look on the right hand side there's no other settings for me to modify this particular synced pattern with overrides right a lot of terminology here but you can't modify this this pattern that I created because I've only identified two areas for the user to to to change which is image and the headline right so we'll say Matt's cool blog post and I can't click into here and you'll notice the purple effect I can't click into here to make this modification that is pattern overrides that's saying we've created this pattern but we don't want our end users to mess it up like our bloggers our authors our marketing team our customers because you know we spent a lot of time designing this we want it to make look good they can just change the little bits of content within it so if I clicked on uh this image I can't modify the size of this image it's already set in stone um you know for the end user perspective and I can only replace it if I go into uh the media gallery to put something else in so I select that there's the image it can I can replace the image I can't modify the design and The Styling around it that's the value of pattern overrides and when we save and publish this post you can see here's the pattern we put in this is the one that we designed you'll also see the one that I created which sits inside of the template because the template one will just it'll just be there every time this template is used um if we go back to show you as an example and we swap this template once again or we just click on use default template save now this pattern will remain but what you'll see a difference is is no more pattern uh on the bottom and the comments showed back up because the pattern uh the template that I used didn't have comments in it so that pattern is no longer there because we're not using that custom template anymore we're back to the default template but the pattern inside of our body of content is still here uh and again with the overrides I can go in and punch into those specific spots here and here okay I can't modify anything else in this pattern versus one more time as an example if we add that same pattern here patterns all this is that's Matt's hero I don't know what that one is named I think I can quickly find it this is the base one that we had used uh as the starting point this is the one that ships with uh 2024 you'll see when I pull up the settings now I have all of these design options I can change the text the background typography size dimensions I can change the as ECT ratio of um you know this this image right I have all those options here in the one that I made where I locked it down nothing just image just headline so pattern overrides patterns inside templates creating templates switching templates a lot of stuff but you can see the power of creating this stuff uh again for you yourself just for your organizational purposes and working on your own WordPress site but certainly when you start to expand it if you're working with clients and a team of people who are on you to create the the lines in the road so they don't Veer off um you can create the content structure and they can reuse the stuff hopefully safely throughout their WordPress website lots of stuff pretty quick thumbs up if you like the video subscribe to the channel if you want
