Hey everyone,Obsidian is like an operating system forpersonal knowledge management. As for operating systems, there are manydifferent applications that you can runon your operating system. Theseapplications in Obsidian are calledplugins. There are 27 core plugins and564 community plugins available in theplugin store.Plus, there are dozens of plugins thatare not yet in the store but are alsoavailable. It can be daunting to choose from all ofthese. In today's video, I want to show you the16 community pluginsand the 12 core plugins that I use on adaily basis.I actually have no other plugin enabledin my Obsidian vault. So let's get started.
Looking at the community plugins, thefirst one I want to draw your attentionto is Advanced Tables. The Advanced Tables pluginhelps you create markdown tables. So letme show you how it works. For example, ifI want to create this simple table of anID and the name. If I create the headerrow and press enter, that’s when advancedtables jump into action, and you can seeit immediately created a nice markdowntable for me. Now I can start to writethe data, and again, you didn’t see Ipressed tab and I moved to the nextcolumn. Then I can just simply typein the name of the person, press tabagain, and automatically, the table issized so that it looks good.
Advanced tables also come with thistoolbar of various table actions, whichmakes it simply very powerful. Then next on the list is the annotatorplugin. The annotator plugin is excellentif you’re annotating PDF documents. Sofor example, here’s the Wordly Maps literature notesthat I took, and you can see that I havemy notes or my highlights here, and I canjump to the part of the text there. Iwill have my highlight.
Annotatorcan work with EPUB files as well as withPDF documents, and in the background, thisis also a markdown document. It is not avery nice looking markdown document. Soif you look at this...
It looks quite ugly, but in preview mode, youwill seeall your highlights and your notes, and that makes it quite practical. If I read a PDF, I prefer the Annotatorplugin.
Next on my list is the customizable pageheader and title bar plugin. This is a very simple plugin;it allows you to add custom buttons tothe header of your page. For example,I have this button here to open theInsert Template model, which isa window in Templater where I can choosethe template to insert. On a desktop, I don't need this because Ican execute this with a quick keyboardcommand, but on my iPad and on my phone, havingthis button at the top of my page makesa huge difference.
It is very easy to configure thesebuttons; all you need to do is set up the command to executeand set the icon that you want to use.An excellent plugin. The next one on the list is ObsidianData View.Now.
The Exclibrain plugin that we will talkabout right after thisis based partly on data view tags ordata view fields. I want to show you howI use data view on a daily basis. For that, I'm going to open my demovault. What you see here, I also have a video onthis. This is a meeting note where I was talking toRolly the Steamroller. In the meeting,we talked about an action that involvedmocking the DOM trunkand projecting anow. What you see here is if I navigateto Mox's page, here I can see all the different taskslisted where Mox's name appeared. This isgeneratedwith a very simple data view query. Youcan see it here. All I do is filtertasks and look for tasks that are notcompletedand where the text of the task includesthe name of the file, which is Mox'sname.I have thissnippet in all of my templates. So, forexample, if I open my project template asWell, I can see all the actions that arerelevant to Project A.
I find thisan extremely simple yetsuper powerful way to see the actions inthe context where I want to use them. This is all enabled by Dataview.
Next on the list is the XColi Brainplugin, and you can see XColiBrain inaction right here. This is a graph viewthat gives you a better overview of therelationships of the variousnodes or pages in your Obsidian vault.
Continuing on, I use Ex-Colidro on adaily basis. I won’t talk about it todaybecause I have so many videos on thesubject. I recommend you watch some ofthem, and you’ll see how I use XColitron.
But the next one, "Hotkey for Templates," isan interesting one. This allows you to add a hotkey to atemplate. So for example, if we come backto my meeting notes example, let’s say that I want torecord a meeting note with, say, forexample, I’m meeting with Muk.What I do is I type in, "I have a scriptfor this."If I have a link right here, I have ashortcut, Ctrl + M, that I want to use for meetings.
Oops, and when I press Ctrl + M,then automatically, my Mox page is opened.I have this section with today's date.I can takenotes here, and when I returnto mydaily notes page, I can see that I had ameeting with Muk, and I can see the notesthat I took on that day. All thisdoes is execute a templater script.
If you look in settings, then here's thehotkey for templates settings, andit lists all my different templates. Here, I chose my meeting notetemplate, I activated it, and from then on,under hotkeys,I can find the meeting note here, and I canadd my shortcut button to it.
So, next on the list is the hover editor. This isa really super powerful plugin. Let meshow youhow you can convertthe Excel brainpane into a hover editor.
More options right here; I can clickconvert to hover editor. With that, this is now converted into this floatingwindow.I can collapseit; I can open it up.I can make it full screen; I can minimizeit again. This issimply wonderful. You can do this also byhovering over any of your notes here. So, forexample,if I hover my advanced tables note hereand hold down the Ctrl key, then you cansee this was opened uplike this; I can even edit this document. So if I click the edit right here, I canedit in the window, and all this is while my originalpage stays in place.
This is a wonderful plugin. So next on the list is the Kanban board. My example of the Kanban board isthemap of content that I created for myYouTube channel. And this isyou can see it takes a bit of time toload because of the many pictures, butthis is the workflow where I manage myVideo ideas, and you can see that we areactually still only recording this video.
But this is how I use the compound board. You can use it for many different tasks. This is the way I use the board.
So, going back to the community pluginslist, the next one on the listis Map View, and let me show you Map View.
This isexcellent when you want to navigate yournotesbased onthe location. So, for example,if now I zoom in here,I can find notes.
Let's seewhat these notes are right here. So,here's a note. This note is theholiday apartment where he spentaweek last summer in the Alps.
And whatMap View allows you to do is it allowsyou tosearch and find your documents based ongeographical locations. So, continuing on,the next on the list is Brat.Brat stands for the Beta Reviewers AutoUpdate Tester.
This is a utility plug-in that helps youinstalland update various beta plug-ins. Forexample, X-Coli Brain is currently onlyavailable via Brat, and Brat makes itextremely simple to download, install, andupdate these plug-ins from GitHub.
Continuing on, the next one is the Jump toDate plugin.Again, a very simple plugin, but very practical.Jump to Date adds a calendar view toyour vault, and if you click a date inthe calendar,it will open the daily page or dailynotes page for that day. This makes iteasy to navigate your daily notes inyour vault.
Then, the Recent File pluginadds a view herecalled the Recent Files, and this issimply a historicallist of all the files that you've opened.Sometimes, it's easier to find. Iremember I was looking at this a couple offiles ago, and I want to find where it was.I most often use this view to findfiles that I was working on and that Iwant to reopen.
Then, the Tag WranglerThis is an absolute must if you are gardeningin your vault, and if you want to cleanup the tags that you have created. Itadds some functionality to the tag pane.
You can right-clickon the various tags, and you have allsorts offunctions here. So primarily, you canrenamethese tags, and that helps you sort themintofolders, or it helps you juststandardize the naming that you use fortags.
Finally, on the list, I haveTemplater, and Templater is the basicautomation tool for Obsidian. There'sanother one called Quick Add that Isometimes use, but frankly, recently, over the past couple of months,I've been exclusively using Templaterfor my script.
Let me just show you here inTemplater.I have lots of templates; for example, Ihave my daily notes template. I have allsorts ofpage templates for projects, for systems, for people, for blogs, for videos, whatever. And also, I have someautomation, like my meeting notes.
Template, or like my automation, to createa new video added to the combo board, andto create the storyboard and the foldersfor it.These are allscripts. Let me show you, for example, thisYouTube create script, whichyes, it's a script, so it is not so verynice looking, but what this does is awhole bunch of automation. I have aseparate video on this, which you mightwant to check outif you're interested. So then, let's turn toour core plugins.
The core pluginsI use are backlinks, and backlinks youcan find right here. Backlinks let'sjust look at backlinks. Backlinks are thepages that link to my page, and havingthis list here is quite practical. Then I have the command paletteactivated, so that's Control P.This is how I typically look foractions that I can execute in Obsidian. For example, if I look at the Excalidrawactions, you can see all the differentExcalidraw actions listed here. Then, the daily notesI use the daily notes template inIn conjunction with Templater and the dailynote, it simply defines the file name andthe location for my daily notes page.
The file explorer is the explorer hereon the left, which isI think a very basic and must-havefeature.The note composerhelps me organize notes. For example, Ican merge a file with another file. Ithelps merearrange the documents I have in myvault. I use it quite frequently. The "Open in Default App" pluginwill openMicrosoft Word, PowerPoint, or whateverother documents you have added to yourvault in their respective applications.
The Outgoing Links plugin is similar to thebacklinks. The difference is that these are all thelinks that are on the page, and so it’s a helpful list in this casebecause I have a list here as well. Thedifference is not so much, but when youhave a body of text in yourcentral pane and then you have the listof links, that is quite handyand that gives you quick access tothose links.
Then, the quick switcher adds the Control Ofunction, where you canquickly type in the title of a document, and you can open that document in theactive pane. This is a veryfast way of navigating to documents inthe vault.Searchis the Obsidian search right here. There are a couple of comments Iactually recommend going onlineand reading about the search commands, because there are more than what you cansee here. For example, you can search fortasks as well.Obsidian search is quite powerful; if youlearn the syntax, it can give you accessto your files very quickly.
Then, the start pluginsimply adds a favorites list here, and Iuse this as quick access to some ofthe pages that I frequently open. Then, there are two more here: the tagpane, which is right here on the righthand side, and this gives us a navigationthrough our tags. You can also see thenumber of documents in each of the tags, and you can alsonavigate the tagsin hierarchy if they are hierarchical.
Tagsand finally, Obsidian Syncis a must-have if you’re using Obsidianon multiple devices. I use Obsidian ontwo PCs, a phone, and an iPad, and ObsidianSync just simply takes care of having mydocuments at my fingertipson whichever device I use Obsidian on.Obsidian Sync keeps a one-year worth ofbackup, so if anything happens to yourfiles, you can always go into the Syncsettings and find yourlost files, and you can restore toprevious versions. It has been a lifesaver for me anumber of times, and I’m surethat it will be for you as well. So Ihighly recommendgetting an Obsidian Sync subscription.
So that completes the walkthrough of the16 community plugins and the 12 coreplugins I use every day. I hope you foundthis quick walkthrough helpful, and please let me know in the commentsif there are some other plugins that youuse and thinkwould benefit my workflow as well, or if youthink that others should know about aswell. If you have questions or if youwould like me to create a more detailedIf you want a video on any of these, let me know whichone you'd like, and I'm happy to do that.
Thank you., Obsidian Plugins that I use every day, YouTube, 01ka8apyf5e3aabzfmyb4pgwpv.
