## 📝 Summary:
- 🔹 **Thesis:** The hosts critique how Peter Thiel purportedly uses apocalyptic themes, “Antichrist” language, and select scriptures to sanction tech-driven politics and deregulation.
▫️ They argue this approach conflicts with New Testament teachings on wealth and communal ethics.
- 🔹 **Secondary thread:** They dismantle the social-media claim that the **Star of David** = the **“star of Remphan”** (Acts 7:43), calling it a mistranslation-fueled, antisemitic conspiracy.
- 🔹 **Method:** Pop-academically styled exegesis, humor, and historical-linguistic notes (1 Thess 5:3; Dan 12:4; Amos 5:26; Acts 7:43).
- 🔹 **Tone:** Irreverent, witty, skeptical, and pedagogy-forward; strong bias for historical-critical method and against culture-war proof-texting.
---
## 📖 Main Content:
- 🔹 **Peter Thiel & ACT 17 (as described by hosts):**
▫️ Thiel is framed as a high-profile voice tying faith to Silicon Valley culture via “ACT 17” branding.
▫️ Hosts say his recent talks center on an **Antichrist** motif, transhumanism, and warnings about “one world government.”
▫️ They argue he opposes tech regulation while backing tech with state/military applications, calling this **cognitive dissonance**.
- 🔹 **Antichrist language:**
▫️ In the Bible, *antichrist* occurs in 1–2 John, largely adjectival (“opposed to Christ”), not a single end-times villain.
▫️ The popular synthesis (Antichrist + Beast + “man of lawlessness”) is a later **patchwork**.
- 🔹 **“Peace and safety” (1 Thess 5:3):**
▫️ Hosts claim Thiel frames “peace and safety” as an Antichrist slogan.
▫️ They counter Paul’s point is surprise/urgency, not a prophecy about a sinister slogan.
▫️ Link: 1 Thess 5:1–3 — https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Thessalonians+5%3A1-3&version=NRSVUE
- 🔹 **Daniel 12:4 — knowledge vs. evil increasing:**
▫️ KJV: “knowledge shall be increased.” NRSVUE/LXX tradition may render “evil/unrighteousness shall increase.”
▫️ Hosts use this variant to question techno-triumphalist proof-texts.
▫️ Links: Dan 12:4 (KJV) — https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Daniel+12%3A4&version=KJV | NRSVUE — https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Daniel+12%3A4&version=NRSVUE
- 🔹 **Wealth & Jesus traditions:**
▫️ Repeated emphasis on renunciation and community support (Rich Young Ruler; Lk 12; Acts 4).
▫️ Tension noted between **billionaire piety** and **synoptic ethics**.
▫️ Links: Luke 12 — https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+12&version=NRSVUE ; Acts 4 — https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts+4%3A32-37&version=NRSVUE
- 🔹 **Star of David myth-busting:**
▫️ **Acts 7:43** quotes **Amos 5:26** via Greek; names shift (Sikkuth/Kiyyun → “tent of Moloch”/“Remphan”).
▫️ The hexagram is a **common geometric motif** with varied uses; only much later does it become emblematic of Judaism/Zionism.
▫️ The claim “Star of David = occult ‘Remphan’ sigil” is historically and linguistically sloppy.
▫️ Links: Acts 7:43 — https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts+7%3A43&version=NRSVUE ; Amos 5:26 — https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Amos+5%3A26&version=NRSVUE
### 🗒️ Notes
- 🔹 **Framing:**
▫️ Hosts position themselves as combating religious misinformation with academic tools.
- 🔹 **Thiel critique:**
▫️ Alleged misuse of “Antichrist” tropes; selective reading of commandments (esp. “do not covet”).
▫️ Claimed inconsistency: anti-regulation stance vs. investment in state-adjacent tech.
- 🔹 **Scripture handling:**
▫️ Emphasis on original languages, genre, intertextual nuance.
▫️ Pushback against **proof-texting** and eschatological collage.
- 🔹 **Symbolism segment:**
▫️ Hexagram’s broad historical footprint distinguished from modern Jewish identity marking.
▫️ Star-of-Remphan myth linked to **antisemitic** conspiracy patterns.
---
### 🧐 **Theological Framework Analysis**
- 🔹 **Likely Tradition of the Hosts:**
▫️ **Historical-critical / Mainline-friendly** posture; skeptical of culture-war eschatology; ethics-forward readings.
- 🔹 **References & Figures:**
▫️ No reliance on classical systematics (Augustine/Calvin) or modern Charismatic figures; method over magisterium.
- 🔹 **Core Issues:**
▫️ **Soteriology/Ethics:** Kingdom ethics prioritize the poor; wealth is spiritually perilous.
▫️ **Eschatology:** Anti-sensational; resists Antichrist-as-master-plot narrative.
- 🔹 **Denominational Markers:**
▫️ Language fits **progressive Protestant** sensibilities (scripture-in-context, social ethics).
- 🔹 **Compared to Courtney’s background:**
▫️ **Aligns** with United Methodist/UCC-progressive ethics, LGBTQIA+ inclusion, social justice.
▫️ **Contrasts** with Charismatic/NAR-style seven-mountains language and end-times speculation.
---
### 🏛️ **Historical and Cultural Context**
- 🔹 **Influences Named:**
▫️ Modern tech capitalism, deregulation debates, and apocalyptic rhetoric in U.S. politics.
- 🔹 **Contemporary Issues:**
▫️ AI weaponization, surveillance capitalism, Christian nationalism, antisemitic conspiracies.
- 🔹 **Nostalgia vs. Change:**
▫️ Hosts resist “golden age” fantasies; push current ethical scrutiny.
- 🔹 **Cultural Moment:**
▫️ Skepticism toward tech-savior narratives; attention to power asymmetries.
---
### 📜 **Scriptural References and Interpretation**
- 🔹 **Consistency:**
▫️ The show models **contextual** reading over cherry-picking.
- 🔹 **Genre Emphasis:**
▫️ Wisdom/prophetic warnings on wealth; Pauline pastoral urgency; apocalyptic tempered by context.
- 🔹 **Contentious Texts:**
▫️ Antichrist vocabulary (1–2 John); eschatology in 1 Thess; variant in Dan 12:4.
- 🔹 **Canon Balance:**
▫️ Significant use of **Synoptics** and **Acts** for wealth/communal ethics.
---
### ⚖️ **Logical and Rhetorical Analysis**
- 🔹 **Strengths:**
▫️ **Appeal to evidence:** Languages, textual variants, historical usage of symbols.
▫️ **Causal clarity:** Wealth → ethical hazards → theological tension.
▫️ **Counterargument handling:** They anticipate “Antichrist slogan” claims and rebut from text.
- 🔹 **Pote
- Summary: I know we’ve mentioned it, but not sure about the context. Have we done the “false witness” commandment? Maybe we have.
The antichrist is coming! According to Peter Thiel, anyway. But who or what he thinks the antichrist actually is seems a little fuzzy. Well, this week on the Data Over Dogma show, we're looking at Thiel's odd take on the end times to see if it stacks up with what's in the Bible.
Then, we're looking at the star of David. Where did it come from? How did it come to be the symbol of Judaism? And are the conspiracy theories online about it based in truth, or just more silly antisemitism?

You have a lot of folks who are like,"Ah, the Jesus fish is just a sidewaysvulva with a tail."With a tail. Sure. Sure. Yeah. And so this is all aboutthe worship of the divine feminine and that tail.Yeah.
Hey everybody, I'm Dan Mlelenand I'm Dan Beecher. You're listening tothe Data Over Dogma podcast where weincrease public access to the academicstudy of the Bible and religion, and wecombat the spread of misinformationabout the same. How are things, Dan?We're going after a billionaire tonight.I'm stoked.Nice.It's uh Yeah, nothing bad canhappen to you if you take down a billionaire on your show, right? That'snot in this economy. No, with a man inthe White House? No, don't think so.
So, okay, the first thing we're doing,we're going to start off with atwisted scripture and we're goingto go after Peter Teal. That'spretty exciting. That's going tobe a lot of fun.
Uh, I don’t think he’s going to make ushe’s, I don’t think he’s going to usehis kingmaker status on us anytime soon.
And thenwell, I don’t think that was in thecards to begin with. But how dare you?How dare you? I think I had a shot. Ithink I had a... no. Uh, and then we’regoing to look, uh, we’re going to doa taking issueabout a little bit ofsymbolism, a little bit of a star, the Star of David. Yes, the Star ofDavid. And, uh, a rather ridiculousconspiracy theory that I’ve been seeingpopping up around social media of late.
So, yes.Uh, all right. So, let’s just dive inwith some twisted scripture. And, as we said, this isn’t onescripture that’s being twisted. Uh, Ifeel likeit’s basically all scripture is beingtwisted, but there are a couplethat have been called out specifically.
Yeah. Peter Thiel, if you don’t know, isa billionaire. He’s one of theco-founders of PayPal.There’s a very, very dorky picture of him and apre-all of the surgeries.
Uh, Elon Musk floating around that youprobably should look up, 'causewoof, how did we give those two so muchpower? But they, uh, they have a lot of it,and Thiel has become a very, uh, prominentvoiceuh, in Christian circles. Uh, he'sstarted an organizationcalled ACT 17, which is a, in hisit's a, it's an acronym or abackronym, is what they call it, for, uh,because he, you know, he took the thingand then went backwards with it. But itit's>> Oh, I have it here somewhere; I don't knowwhat it is. It stands for acknowledgingChrist in technology and society.Um, and you know, I went and read theentire chapter of Act 17 to see, like, what they're on about or if it's, if itilluminates sort of what their missionis really.>> I don't know. Not a lot there.
>> No, it's like, it's basically Paul goingbouncing around from city to city. Youknow, he starts out in Thessalonica.>> Yeah. The uproar at Thessalonica. I'vebeen to Thessaloniki.>> Yeah.>> Lovely area. Lovely, uh, port.
Yeah.City.It's one of the bigger cities ofGreece now, isn't it?It is. It is. Yeah. But theyhave their ruins. Theyhave some of that going on, too. I wassurprised to see around the corner frommy hotel at TGF Fridays.
Sure. When I visited there, I went in andthere was a European Leaguebasketball game on TV. Oh,and, yeah, it wasa surreal experience. There you go.
But, yeah, lovely area. Love, loveThessaloniki. Love Greece. But, um, yeah, there's the uproar. Paul and Silas arepassing through. We're going to go.Yeah.
Oh, man. And then Paul gets toAthens.Yeah.And there's all the what-have-you. Um,all the what-have-you. Yeah. Go.That's where he's quoting someGreek poets, since we are God's offspring, all that kind of stuff. Yeah.
>> But>> yeah, it doesn't seem to be a missionstatement.>> No,>> I think what you were wondering,>> uh it does point at a little bit of likeend time stuff and we're going to get toPeter Thiel and his eschatology.Uh, but it doesn't really, it's notyou know,it has some of that, you know, godsaren't made of gold or silver orstone, and it's got somestuff that feels like>> uh you know worry, you know, repent>> uh type stuff. But>> well here's here are a couple ofpassages. So, I'll read these real quickand let me know if we're lookingat Thiel and what he's doing through thelens of Acts 17. What is this saying?
>> Right.>> Um, in verse 18, also some Epicurean andStoic philosophers debated with him. Some said, "What does this pretentiousbabbler want to say?">> Others said, "He seems to be aproclaimer of foreign deities." This wasbecause he was telling the good newsabout Jesus and the resurrection. So,They took him and brought him to theAropagus. Uh, that’s Mars Hill. That’sthe stone outcropping that isjust west of the Acropolis.
>> Uh,Okay.>> And asked him, "May we know what thisnew teaching is that you are presenting? It sounds rather strange to us. So, wewould like to know what it meansnow." So, I wonder if the idea isthat they’re the proclaimers ofthis new philosophy that everybodywants to know about.>> Yeah. And yeah, it’sbasically this. He’s like, "Hey, let me tell youabout Jesus." And that’s kindof it.>> But um>> we do have an actual manifesto on thewebsite for the Acts 17collective.>> Yes, that’s true.>> Yeah. And I’ll just read thebeginning of this just so we can see howthis casts any illumination on what thischapter has to do with anything at all.Uh, a manifesto for the curious, thecreators, and the culture shapers.
Humans, we are all made to worship, andwe'll worship something if we don'tworship God. Uh, not true.>> I hate that so much. I hear that>> everybody worships something. No,>> as an atheist out in the world, you know, I won't say prominent, butas one who is a public atheist, uh,>> public a, okay,>> I get that all the time. Well, what doyou worship then?>> Yeah.>> Well, I—nothing. Am I allowed to just Idon’t think I worship anything. I'm, uh,I'm just out here living a life. I don'tknow what you're talking about. And ifyou've decided you want everyone to beworshiping something, and then you justredefine worship so that it becomessomething that everyone does, you'rekind of giving away the store there.
>> U so he continues, "What are you puttingyour faith in? What are you worshiping?"Um, I don't know about y'all, but we putour faith in blast hard cheese. Um,that's a deep cut. Not too deepa cut. I mean, that's one of the mostpopular Mystery Science Theater 3000 umcompilations out there. Uh, in a worldWhere we're always building startups, audiences, reputations, it's easy toforget to ask what we're buildingtoward. Fame, power, money, success—these things promise fulfillment, butoften leave us wanting more. We believethere's something deeper worthexploring. Not just for your work, butfor your soul. Not just for Sundays, butfor your everyday. Not just to fill you,but for you to find wholeness.
>> Great. All of that is fine. And platitudinousto the max.>> Platitudinalisticto the max.>> Plat platitudi.>> It's a platypus is what it is. Um,>> Perry the platypus. But the thing aboutit is that underneath that, one of the things that they're reallygoing after is trying to capturepeople in Silicon Valley.
>> Yes.>> Um, which is notoriouslyat least has a reputationfor being a little hostile to faith.>> Yeah. Um,but I think they seem to be making goodground and sort of leading the charge, one of the banner bearers.
Perhaps the profit of this movement isPeter Thiel. So let's talk a bit abouthim and sort of where he hasbeen saying because he is also quite, um,he can be very tight-lipped. He can bevery—he plays his cards pretty close tothe chest, but he's starting to come out ofhis shell. This is the guy, by the way, that we have to thank for J.D. Vance. He backed J.D.Vance for no good reason. What is Vance doing that this guy'sother than—Yeah. It's all—there arepieces that are missing. Let's just putit that way. So, I'm justperusing his Wikipedia entry, which is voluminous.Um, I just read this and stopped on asentence. Thiel confirmed that he hadfunded Hulk Hogan. So,what does that mean?Okay.Gawker had previously outed Thiel as gay.And then when the Bolia v. Gawker lawsuitended up with Gawker losing the case,Thiel confirmed that he had funded HulkHogan. So it's talking about all hisright-wing and conservative actions.
Libertarian, um,uh, investments.Right? Yeah. I mean, this is one ofthose guys who talks about freespeech all the time, but then, as isthe case here, to get revenge on apublication that outed him as gay, hefunded a lawsuit thatHulk Hogan could not himself have comeclose to affording, and justbeat the smack out of this other group.
Um, all right. Uh, let's get to Thiel'sapocalypse, uh, because he has beenstarting, he has started to talk aboutand here's the thing.I don't doubt the sincerity of hisbelief.>> Yeah.>> Uh, that's not — we're not in the businessat the Data Over Dogma podcast ofcasting judgment on the sincerity ofanybody's religious beliefs. No, that is true.
Uh, so, what he hasbeen talking about is, uh, he's beentalking about the Antichristor an Antichrist; an entity that isAntichrist, and he's notparticularly clear on what or who.
That might be. Um, he’s doing a four-partlecture series on the Antichrist, andfrom what I have heard, nobody is quitesure what he’s talking about. Yeah.Yeah. It seems like, uh, it might be, uh,the one world government might be theAntichrist or whatever. He definitelybelieves that a one world government isa bad thing, and it’s coming.
>> And I, like, I first heard about this. I, Iwas telling you before we, uh, hit record,um, I started getting a flood of requeststo respond to this interview that he didwhen I was in Italy with my family, andI was like, I can’t do this right now, man. I don’t know what this dude istalking about, but I can’t do this. Andum, it was an interview where he’stalking about transhumanism, and, um, and then goes into Antichriststuff, and he appealed to ascripture. This is what stuck out forme. He said that the Antichrist’sslogan will be, "Peace and safety.">> Yes.>> And I was like, that is nowhere in theBible, but I need to stop and look thisup. And what on earth is he talkingabout? And, um, he’s talking about 1Thessalonians.
Uh, I think that the word "antichrist" occurs, I think, fourtotal times in all of the Bible. Four orfive total times in all of the Bible. All of them in First John or SecondJohn.Oh, okay.>> And they are used to describe anyone whois opposed>> to Christ. It is mainly anadjective; that person is antichrist oryou know, anti-Christian. There’s oneuse that could suggest that it isreferring to a specific individual.Okay,>> but or certain individuals. However, that use suggests that they’re alreadythere. They have arrived>> when the text was written that is now inthe New Testament. So, it’s notsomething that is off in the future. Butwhat people have done, and you knowbecause of the presupposition ofunivocality, they’re like, "Well, this mustbe talked about elsewhere. Let’s go intoRevelation. Let’s look for the big baddyand we’re going to say that’s theantichrist. Let’s go into Paul. Let’slook at the man of lawlessness. We’regoing to say that’s the antichrist.
So, you basically cobble together fromthe scattered Lego pieces from thesedifferent—uh, I don’t know what theycall them—engineers, different sets. And you’re going to try to cobbletogether this picture of what thisentity is going to be. And so, he appealsto 1 Thessalonians 5:3. And it’stalking about—uh, now concerning thetimes and the seasons, brothers andsisters, you do not need to haveanything written to you, for youyourselves know very well that the dayof the Lord will come like a thief inthe night. When they say there is peaceand security, then sudden destructionwill come upon them as labor pains comeupon a pregnant woman, and there will beno escape.
>> Okay. So,>> it seems that he is interpreting thisprophecy about the second coming thatsays it will happen when they say thereis peace and security, which basicallythe rhetorical point there is when theyleast expect it.>> Right.>> That’s when you know the son of man’sgoing to be like, "Gotcha!" Right?>> Um, that’s when all this is going to goDown and now we've taken that andtwisted it and you've heard meuse a lot of $2 words on this show. Thisis a $15 word.
>> Yeah, I was going to be veryimpressed if that's an actual word.>> It is an actual word. And the onlyreason I know this word and usethis word is because I learned it on mymission in Spanish.>> Oh.>> And came back and I was like, there'sthis word. Does it exist in English? AndI looked it up and I was like, sweet, itexists in English. I'm using it. And umbut anyway, it basically means totwist something into something elseto serve your own purposes, right? Tomisrepresent because in no sensewhatsoever is this saying the slogan ofthe Antichrist, right,
>> is peace and security. But it soundslike he's trying to say, "Hey, anybodywho's telling you we're going to fix theworld's problems, or at least we'regoing to try to fix the world'sproblems, we're going to come togetherand find a solution to all these socialills." He's wagging his finger sayingThat's the antichrist, or at least that'ssome kind of precursor or catalyst forthe antichrist. In other words, he'ssaying, "Don't do that. Don't try to fixthe world's problems. Don't try to unifythis whole — you mentioned the oneworld government. It sounds like one ofthose idiotic conspiracy theories.
The globalists are coming. Um, butthat was the first, that was the onlyscripture I heard in the little bit ofthat interview that people kepttagging me in. And I was like, well, this is alreadyway off the rails. Yeah. So,and it gets worse. It gets more off therails the further he goes. And thething that gets really weird, andbelieve me, I've tried toparse this out. I believe that this isjust a cognitive dissonance that livesin his brain. I believe that he hasjust made peace with something thatdirectly contradicts himself, which is that he talks about howthis one world government is coming. They aretalking about peace andsafety. So, we should be worried aboutthat. And they are going to make us, you know,Worried about state control andregulation and all this stuff. He'sworried about a totalitarian regime.
Uhhuh. But yet one of the main pointsthat he makes with these as his datapoints is we should not regulate AI,biotech, like technology should not beregulated because it's what's going tosave us.Yeah. What I doshouldn't be regulated. It's only whateverybody else does that should be regulated. It becomes clear why his theology islike this when you look at hisinvestment portfolio, which includes justlists of, uh, you know, defensecontracting. Uh, he’s the founderof Palantir, which is abattlefieldintel, like dataaggregator sort of thing. Uh, but he’salso heavily invested in a companycalled Anduril Industries, which isdrones and, like, AI tower, AI like borderdefense towers that will justSo it's Skynet. He's starting Skynet. He is Skynet.Yeah.Like, it's so crazy. He's invested in aA bunch of different startups for cybersecurity and variouscyberdine systems is where it's going togo next, and then it'll go to Skynet.
Yeah. And yet, all of theseare tools that he will sell togovernmentsthat are already funded by ourgovernmentsto— and so, like, how is this goingto prevent the thing that he's scaredof, the thing that he is talking about? It's literally what is going tobring about the apocalypsethat he is worried about.
Yeah. He doesn't seem to be— you know,we're on the sci-fi thing. Uh,you spend so much time worrying about ifyou could, you didn't bother to thinkabout if you should. That's right.Um, he is going to make— badly quote—badly quote— um Goldbloom. Yes. He's going tomake dinosaurs. Well, I don't know wherehis transhumanism is going to take him. That's certainly not off the table.Um, he's going to try and get hisown consciousness implanted into aT-Rex or something. It's just such a weirdTheology. The other thing, the other biblical reference that I've seen himmake that I think is also tellingabout him and who he is, and I thinkyeah. Well, the story, I think the storythat we’re getting to is the fact thatlike everybody,he has taken his theological, he hasn'ttaken the Bible and then builtthe theology that the Bible tells him to build. Uh-huh.
He has taken his lifeand then taken scriptures, and just built a theology around what he likesand what's important to him.Yeah.And what serves his interests, and then proclaimed that as the theology ofwhat's true.
So the thing that I was getting to is hewas talking about the Ten Commandments.Oh, and he talked about how the mostimportant ones are the first one and thelast one. The first one is you haveto believe in God, and the last one isdon't covet. And like immediately I thought, youknow, a billionaire telling me not tocovet.
Yeah. Yeah. Let's just we're a littleYeah. Yeah.>> It just rings a bit like just don'tdon't stop wanting all my stuff. Yeah,it doesn't say anything about greed. It's just about wanting other people'sstuff.>> If you want more of your own stuff, um,and to multiply your own stuff, uh,that's fine.
>> Um, and if it requires, uh, taking itfrom others, as long as you'redoing it your way. Um,>> yeah,>> that what a I I think that's such aninteresting attempt to just kind of takethe law and just say, well, we just wantthe bookends. We don't need the books.
Um, but it does suggest — and thisis how religion works — that he'sjust being guided by his intuitionswhich are all about self-preservationand about increasing one's own standingand one's own access to power andresources. So he's basically like, "Ooh,this is a — and intuitively probablynot consciously — um, hopefully notconsciously — but intuitively hissubconscious is going, "This is anice little instrument for us to use."To play with for us to advance our own interests and structure power and values. I think it's odd that I'm looking at the manifesto for the ACT 17 collective, and there's a section that says what we offer. It says we host speaker events where real conversations happen, where tech founders, producers, designers, and creatives talk candidly about how faith and work collide, where Jesus is at the center, not as an obligation, but as an invitation.
>> Uhhuh. And I am just made of questions.
>> Yeah. It's kind of like, it’s kind of like, I'm thinking of what’s the comedy show with...what was the comedy show? Was it called Silicon Valley?>> Oh, yeah. I'm thinking of that, but they're just sprinkling in some Jesus.
>> Yeah. Let's just give this just a Jesusy vibe, but everything else stays the same. Yeah. It's very clearly like their whole thing is how do we invite tech bros into Christianity?
And not without making them questionthe morality of any of the things thatthey're doing, because obviouslyyou're going to lose them if you makethem question their morals. Becausethere are serious ethical andmoral questions to90% of what Silicon Valley is producingright now. Uh, and no one wants to askthose questions. The reason thatThiel is fighting against any kind ofregulationis because he doesn’t wantany of these ethical and moralquestions to get in the way of him justmaking gobs of money.
Yeah, like Palantir sounds like anapocalyptic thing; is that Skynet? It’s like we’re going tocreate this thing that just collects allthe data on everybody.Yeah.Um, and it’s like you, the moral problemswith that, the ethical issues with that. Butif you’re just like, “Hey, all that matters is youbelieve and you don’t come after mystuff.”Yeah. Uh, like if that’s your theology, then the moral and ethical dilemmas justDisappear like a fart in the wind. Uh, wedon't care about anything.
>> And if the Satan le bad guys arecoming, you got to have some drones tokill them. You know what I mean? Likejust get some AI drones. Arming AIis what's happening right now; it iswhat's next. And oh daddy, that issome >> Yeah. Yeah. Bad ideas.>> You and I both know how bad AI is atthe most basic of commands. Um, andwe had the episode that we didwith April Joy, asking about her bookStar Spangled Jesus. And we plugged thatinto ChatGPT over and over again.
And it could not understandthat this book was written by a woman. It kept hallucinating all thesedifferent authors. Um, so Teal'sdoing these, I think it was afour-part Antichrist lectures out in SanFrancisco, and I have somebody on theinside, someone who signed up forthem. After the first one,we talked, and they were like,"Yeah, I don't know what it was about."Like, it was unclear what thethesis statement was. Um, but theytold me that there was only oneThe scripture that was even mentioned in thewhole first lecture. Uh, he evidentlybrought up Daniel 12:4.
>> Okay,>> which, um, says, and this is our, you know, our trusty NRSVE. But you, Daniel, keepthe words secret and the book sealeduntil the time of the end. Many shall berunning back and forth, and evil shallincrease. Now, that’s not what he read in thething. That’s the NRSVE.
>> Okay.>> What he read in the thing was the KingJames version. And, um, I just want toread the end of it. Many shall run toand fro, and knowledge shall beincreased. So, this is what Tealevidently, uh, quoted in some part ofthis first lecture. Uh, and the ideaseemed to be that this is some kind ofprophecy about the end times, and heseemed to be appealing to this scriptureto suggest that in the end timesknowledge is going to increase, andobviously, as someone who is interestedin AI and transhumanism, and, uh, in allthis kind of stuff, he wants to suggestthat he's a part of contributing toknowledge increasing, and that this isMaybe a sign that the end times are upon us. But, uh, when my friend told methat that was the scripture, the onlything from the Bible that Tealmentioned, I went and looked it upbecause I remember thinking it strikesme that there's something weird aboutthis verse.
>> Um, and when I read it from the NRSVU,it ended with "and evil shall increase."And that's because, uh, um>> the King James version says "knowledgeshall be increased." And the Hebrewthere, if we look in the Maseretic text, the traditional, um, authoritativemanuscript of the Hebrew Bible, uh, thelast word is "hadat," which would mean theknowledge.
>> Okay. Uh, however, this word in theAramaic square script issometimes indistinguishable from theword "hara,"which would be the evil.>> Oh>> and when we look at the ancient Greektranslation of this passage, that'sexactly what it says. Uh, and, uhunrighteousness or evil, wickedness willincrease.>> Okay. Uh, and so I find it odd that, wellOne, obviously, Thiel is not aware that theKing James Version might not be the besttranslation of this, but is also unaware that the prophecyto which he is appealingmight say the exact opposite of what heis leveraging it to say regarding what'sgoing on today, but also might be alittle prophetic in and of itself givenwhat we've talked about regarding theethical and moral quandaries, risks, problems;the quagmire of things likeunrestricted AI and Palantir andgetting all this information on theinternet.
Intel on all of us and all of thismaking it available to the highestbidder or to someone like DonaldTrump, who can't even read the wordacetaminophen, right? He got there eventually. But he had to comment on what abizarre word this was.Have youlike I? He's the kind of person where ifhe said it's a banana, what can it cost?$10.I would not bat an eye. That wouldn't surprise me at all, that heI couldn't read a benefit. But if hehas access to this, like, holy cow, thatis, uh, that is dangerous. That isphenomenally dangerous.
I mean, it's weird that Thielcan't see that. Like, everything that I readabout sort of apocalyptic bad guys inthe Bible. And like you point out,the Bible doesn't connect Antichrist andthe beast and this and that.
Like, these are all different entities ordifferent stories or whatever, different characters in differentpeople's narratives, right? But let's just say for thesake of argument that they're the sameor whatever.
Okay. How Thiel doesn't see that it's him, that he's on the bad guy's side of thisthing.
Yeah.I mean, look, we're all the heroes ofour own story, sothat's just how that's going to work. But I mean, if you're going to invokethe Bible, if you're going to say that, you know, these decisions, theseideas are based on yourThe love of your Christian faith, and youknow, if your manifesto of yourorganization is going to talk aboutcentering Jesus, then don't we have totalk about no man can serve two masters, the parable of the rich fool, the richyoung ruler, you know, likethe camel through the eye of a needle. Likethis man has wealth, the kind ofwealth that no one could have imagined.
>> Yeah.>> At any other time in history.>> Why is it, you know, it ought to bethe Acts four collective?>> Okay. Acts the Acts 4 co-op>> The act in Acts 4 said all whobelieved in Jesus came together. Theywere united. There was no poor amongthem,>> whatever they had they sold so that theycould distribute the money eachaccording to their needs, right?
>> Uh, so like, uh, if you're>> trying to call yourself a collective, forcrying out loud, what are you doing?>> Be a collective! Everybody wants to be acollective until it's time to be acollective, and then it's likeno, but we mean authoritarianism is where we're coming from.
Uh, rule the world with an iron fist. Um,and we think giving away all of ourstuff is a bummer.Yeah, no, we don't want to do that. Imean, if there's anything that Jesus hadto say about money over and over andover, repeated in all of the gospels, everywhere you look, you know, Matthew,Matthew 19, Mark 10, Luke 18, all oftheseare just so many scriptures whereJesus, in the red letter scriptures, saysyou have to—like the only way to getinto heaven is for you to sell yourstuff and give it away to the poor. Thisis something that, uh, Luke, who isthe author—uh, well whoever was the author
of Luke is most likely the author ofActs. Repeatedly, uh, you have the story ofthe rich young ruler, where Jesussays, uh, you still got one thing left todo: sell all that you have, give the moneyto the poor. And he goes away upsetbecause he was very wealthy. And thenJesus says, yeah, look how hard it is forthe wealthy to enter the kingdom ofheaven. And people were like, ah,that's a one-off; that was just personalcounsel between Jesus and this kid.He looked at that one guy, and he wasLike, "I don't like that the>> jib." But we talked about Luke 12.
>> Yeah. Where the guy says, "Uh, tellmy brother to divvy up theinheritance to me." And Jesusconcludes his parable of the richfool by saying, "Sell your possessions,">> right?>> To his disciples, his followers, everybody there.
>> Yeah.>> He's like, "Sell all your possessions.Give the money to the poor." And have>> Don't build that bigger barn. Don't youdo it.
>> Yeah. Because your life will berequired of you. Sucker or fool. Um thatthatum and then the same author is theone who talks about how in Acts they alllived communally. Maybe not communismbut communalism at the very least, selling everything that they had. Andwe have the poor couple that waslike, "We're not going to sell everything. We're not going to give all the money in."I'm going to keep a little bit. And thenuh Peter was the one who got tosay, "Your life is required of you." Yeah.
And God, in whatever way befitted thecircumstance, decided to offthem.
>> Yeah.>> Um, so>> yeah. And Peter, it was such a coldline when Peter was like, "The feetof the people who have carried off yourhusband's corpse are at the door foryou.">> Yeah.
>> Like, that is coldblooded. Hey, they'reback.>> Yeah, they're back. And guess what? You're going to die. It's your turn.
>> Um, yeah, that's pretty coldblooded, but>> the message is pretty consistent.Um, yeah, this obscene wealth isnot a good thing. And I think, um, Ithink Thiel is a good illustration ofthe rationalizing and the cognitivedissonance and the>> inestimable harm that can befallthe world because of that kind ofwealth being concentrated in the handsof one individual. Yeah. Or one orone collective.
>> Oh gosh. All right. Well, I thinkwe've pounded on poor Peter forLong enough. Uh, let>> rhetorically speaking,>> rhetorically speaking, um>> I don’t know what I’d do if I wereactually in his presence. Probably justsell out completely and let him>> I would come back on this show in aheartbeat and just>> I’ve got an opportunity for you, Peter.
That>> recant everything that I’ve said for theright price. Uh, call me Peter Teal. Youcan get my number.Uh, all right. Let’s uh, let’s move onthen to uh, taking issue. And what we’re taking issue with is uhis a star. So, this is an idioticand an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorythat I’ve seen, I don’t know how manytimes on social media, and I’ve made ahandful of videos over the years aboutthis, but there are some folks outthere who like to suggest that the Starof David, well, first off, the Star of Davidis not in the Bible.>> Right? This is the six-pointedstar that is sort of the de factosymbol of Judaism and of the state ofIsrael.
In general,on the Israeli flag, an upward-pointedtriangle over a downward-pointed triangleor under.Yeah, or they could be pointedsort of diagonally too.Diagonally. Yeah. These are equilateraltriangles. They point in threedirections, so just have fun with that.Yeah.
Take that for what it's worth.Yeah, it's just, it's a hexog.Yeah.So, we have hexogs and pentagrams andall manner of gramsthat are used as geographic. Ohmy gosh.
What's the word? Geometric. Geometricdesigns that are used in architectureand iconography and stuff like that.Yeah, like we can find this in Indiagoing back to BCE, like all over theworld. The hexog is just, you know, peoplemake hexogs. It's a pretty simple but fun-to-look-at image.
Yeah. And you know we see it onthere's a hexog on the coverthe front of the Lengrad Codeex, which isthe Maseretic text. The oldestcomplete edition of the Hebrew Bibledates to about 100 CE. There's a hexogon the cover of that. Okay. It's, um, ifyou go visit Capernaum, and now'sdon't go. Um, but if you timewrong, yeah, not the time to be overthere for touristy purposes. Uh, butif you are in Capernaum, they havesome of the old stone lentils from thenot the thing you make soup with, but the architectural featureover the door.
Yeah. And they have these from asynagogue that’s from like the third orfourth century CE from Capernaum, andthey have, you can see a hexog carvedinto that, and then a pentagram rightnext to it. So anyway, because it really didn't becomeassociated formally with Judaismuntil like the 19th century.Oh, really?Yeah. Like you see it being usedstarting in like the 14th century asSomething that’s not just a fun designbut something that is symbolic ofJudaismthat they’re identifying withthemselves. Okay. The 19th century is whenit becomes associated more salientlywith Zionism. Ah,so, um, but there’s a theorythat it was borrowed from an occultsymbol.
Yes.An occult symbol that’s mentioned in theBible.Oh,yes. Um, they say it is the star ofRemfan, which I went to a Rem fan Ren fair.Wait, no. Okay. No, you went toBurning Man, ifthat’s true. I’m pretty sure they thinkthat that’s Remfan. Uh, I’m pretty surethey would definitely associate it.Yeah. Don’t put any stars up at BurningMan. Uh, ’cause they’reonly they’ll only tell you you’reworshiping Remfan. So what is a Remfan? What do weknow about Remfan? We don’t know forsure, but it is probably some kind ofdeity associated with Saturn.
Occurs only once, uh, in the NewTestament. It's in Acts 7, verse 43. Andthis is where Stephenis about to be martyred, but heislecturing, uh, the folks on thehistory, gives like a briefhistory of uh, Israel and Judaism, andquotes a passage from uh, Amos, Amos 5:26.And we’ll get to Amos, but in Acts 7:43,Stephen says, “No, you took along thetent of Moolak and the star of your God,Reman, the images that you made to worship.”So, Stephen is upset about this, but he’s quoting a Greektranslation of Amos 5:26.
Now, when we go back into Amos 5:26,here's what it says in the Hebrew. Youshall take up Sikut, your king, andKiwan, your star god, your images whichyou made for yourself.Um, a little different. It doesn't soundquite the same. We've got a fewthings going on here. Um, secoot isbeing misunderstood as having somethingto do, uh, with the Greek word um,which is like a tent.Okay.
Um, so it is being misunderstood as aReference to a tent. So in Acts it saysyou took along the tent of Moloch. Uh, inthe Hebrew, we have "secu" your king andthe word "Melchi" is beingmisunderstood by the Greek translatorsas "Moloch," which a lot of people think is this, uh, this godof child sacrifice. Oh my god! Ihear that all the time, like in someevangelical TikTok. Somebody willbe like, "Moloch, they're worshippers ofMoloch!" You know, I'm, you, and again as anatheist, it's, I'm a Moloch worshippersomehow.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Cats and dogs livingtogether.>> Mass hysteria!>> Yes. Um, but there was never any deitynamed Moloch that was worshipped in theancient world. We've done, I think we’vedone an episode on this. Haven't we donean episode on this? You've mentioned it.I don't know if we've done a wholeepisode on it.>> All right. Well, in short, this isjust a word that referred to a specifictype of sacrifice, and the Greektranslators didn't know that word.>> Yeah.>> And so, they thought it was the name ofSome deity. So, the deity Mooloknever existed. Um, not in the sense thatthere were other deities running around, but this one was a fake one, right? But in the sense,I was going to say, from my perspective, none of the deities existed. But that,I get what you're saying. Yes. Yes.
Um, and then we have Kiwan or Kunein Hebrew, probably a Hebrewtransliteration of an Akkadian deity name,Kiwan, which is probably a deityassociated with Saturn. Your image isyada yada yada. But in short, this name Kiwan has been replaced bythis other name Reman, which is probablyeither an Egyptian or a Greco-Romanminor deity, a JV deity who probablyhad something to do with the planetSaturn. But because it mentions a starand because the Star of David is amanner of star, sure.
The conspiracy theorists just go,and here I’m thinking of the court scenefrom My Cousin Vinny— identical. They’re just arbitrarilyimagining, well this must be the samestar. Yeah, right.
Because you know how many stars you've gotout there. Not as that old fool said,"billions and billions and billions." No,there's only one. Um, so thisstar of Remfan has to be the star ofDavid. So there's a conspiracy theoryout there because we’ve also got the mistranslationMolo Reman, and Molo also must beidentical.
Yeah. Uh, so obviously the worship ofRemfan must also involve childsacrifice, uh, dogs and cats livingtogether, mass hysteria, all of thegoodies. So, um, it's ananti-Semitic conspiracy theory thatsuggests basically that Jewish folks inthe 19th centuryyou know, precisely the family that theythink started it all, the Rothschilds.
Sure. Yeah. Um, that they consciouslyand intentionally were like, "Let’s take thisoccult star that commemorates ourworship of Reman and let’s make that theofficial symbol of Zionism and ofJudaism. Um, and then it gets evenworse because we have a hexagramand a pentagram that are found in someliterature from the 19th century.
There was a book called TheHistory and Practice of Magic by aFrench author who went by a pseudonym,Paul Christian.Okay.He talks basically about allthe symbolism he found in thesegrimoires and all this kind of stuff.Yeah, and he draws a picture of amedallion that on one side has ahexagon with a bull's head in the centerof it, and then on the other side has apentagram. It's called thetalisman of Saturn. He says it is a preservativeagainst danger of death throughapoplexy, cancer, decaying of the bones, consumption, dropsy, paralysis, and dangersagainst the danger of being buried alivewhile in a state of coma.
Ah, you know, the universal anxiety.Yeah.Against the danger of violent deaththrough secret plotting, poison, orambush. This talisman preserves womenfrom the mortal perils which accompanyor sometimes follow childbirth. If inIn times of war, the leader of an army hidesthe talisman of Saturn in a place whichis in danger of falling into the enemy'shands. That enemy will be unable tocross the limits set up by the presenceof the talisman and will then retreateither discouraged or overcome by aresolute counterattack.
So, um, the conspiracy theorists willsuggest that this talisman, which wasinvented in the 1850s by Paul Christian, goes all the way back to the ancientworld.
>> Yes, of course.>> And so all Jewish uses of thissymbol are derivative of its use as asymbol of Saturn and the gods Reman andMoolok. It's always been very funnyto me, in the, uh, to coin a phrase inthe symbology.
Uh, in the look when>> I'm a symbologist.>> When one looks at symbols, when you, when you take something as simpleas a six-pointed star or a five-pointedstar, if you want to talk about, likeSatanism or whatever, like, yeah, throughout the centuries, throughout themillennia, lots of people are going to have used aA very simple symbol like that can be used for variousdifferent reasons.
>> Mhm.>> And you know, the fact that a group ofpeople who are naughty start using asix-pointed star as their symbol, too, does not reflect on another group of peoplewho are just using it as their symbol. You know what I mean? Like>> They don't have inherentmeaning.>> No.>> Just like all words.>> Yeah. Like>> they mean what people use themto mean, and that's one of thefoundations of conspiracy theories. This symbol that we think means onething way over here must mean that samething way over there.>> Right? The fact that Hitler startedusing a swastika doesn't affect what itmeant for centuries before to the Hindupeople. Yes. They used a swastika like>> Yes.>> It doesn't mean that they were forthose many centuries,>> you know, anti-Semitic.
And interested in the promotion ofthe Aryan race or something.>> Yes. And if not fascists, right? Um>> Although Aryan, the word Aryan does comefrom sort of India. Now, oh, now I'm in areally weird place. Okay.>> Okay.>> Now I've got a conspiracy theory. I'mworking on it. I'll come back toyou all with it.>> Keep your hand on the rope. Don't gettoo um, there's another shape. There are some conspiracy theoriesassociated with this. Do you know what amandola is?>> I think you're pronouncing it wrong.Mand mandola.Mandorian. No. Ummandorian.>> No, a mandola is an almond shape. So ifyou take two circles and you movethem so that you have>> um, kind of two semicircles that connectand create an almond shape.>> Okay,>> that is a mandora, right? And thathas been a very common um geometric, notgeographic.>> Um, geometric design throughout historyaround the world.
Sure.Um,but in some places it has been usedas symbolic of a vulva.Right.And so you have a lot of folkswho are like, "Ah, the Jesus fish is just asideways vulva with a tail."With a tail. Sure. Sure. Yeah. That'sright. And so it's all aboutworship of the divinefeminine and that tale.Yeah. But you get this allthe time where people are like, "Don'tyou see the connection?" It's like,"Well, I see that one group is using asymbol one way and another group isusing a symbol another way, and you wantto insist that you're in charge of whatthose symbols are allowed to mean,"right? Um, and it just doesn't worklike that. Um, so yeah. But,yeah, the conspiracy theories are wild regarding theMegan David, the Star of David.
Well, let's get back to the Star ofDavid just briefly. Can you talk aboutwhy it is called that? How is itlinked to David?
Um, well, I think you had some peoplewho were probably imagining that thissymbol went back. Some peoplethink that it would havebeen on the banners that King Davidflew, or people imagine that this wascarved into the pillars of thepalace of King David.Right? You also have it connected with thelion. Um, you see that fromtime to time, including inRastafarian cultures.Okay, you will have a lion and the Star ofDavid put together.Okay.Um, the fact thatyou had an early connectionbetween the star and Solomon. So, likethe Key of Solomon is one of thoseold grimoire-type texts that somepeople think the Star of David goesback to.Uh, and it is sometimes known asthe Seal of Solomon.Yeah.Um, I think that’s probably how it getsconnected with David, but I don’t knowhow far back the name Star of David is.
That's so interesting. It's just, yeah, itand it's in the Cabala, which is probably wheremedieval Jewish mystical literatureis, is where it probably has the mainassociation with.
>> All right.>> Uh, with King David.>> I find that fascinating because, yeah,it does feel likethis has just been thesymbol of Judaism since time immemorial, but>> obviously that's just not the case. Anduh>> no>> and, yeah, justno, we should do the cross next. Weshould, uh, that would be an interestingone to do also.
>> That would be an interesting one. Well,we haven't done a show on, uh, whywe think Jesus was crucified on aT-shaped cross. Have we? No, because that'sand that gets into the Jehovah'sWitnesses because, um, are you notaware?>> Oh. Oh, they don't, they just do like a>> stake.>> A stake. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah.Well, we'll have to figure all that out. We'll have to sort out the cross. That's a good one for next timethe morning of our recording when we text each other going,"What are we going to talk about today?"We'll think about that. The crucifix.Yeah,we wear our hearts on our sleeveshere. Um, but yeah, it isthroughout the Kabbalistic usage.Uhare you just reading Wikipedia rightnow?
I just want to know. No, I'm looking at the internet, butnot Wikipedia.Okay.Anyway, yeah, I think it's a fascinating thing.Did you have more on that? No, I think I'm done complaining.I sprung that on you. I admit thatthat question about the association with David. You and IOh, no. I should have looked that up before. We haven't talked about it. That's my fault. Anyway,I should look up a lot of stuff beforewe start recording the show. You shoulddo any amount of prep work before westart and not just rely on the fact thatyou have whatever brain you were givento just remember almost all of thestuff. But I sure am grateful for that brain. Ithink it's fun. Uh, so there you go,friends. Uh, that's the Star ofDavid. Um, hopefully Peter Thiel doesn'tstart talking about it as being thesymbol of the Antichrist or something.
Remfan. Yeah.Or actually, many manuscriptssay Rayon, some say Ryan, some sayRoofan. It's written a bunch of differentways. We're not sure exactly what it is,but the conspiracy theorists all sayRemfan.
Okay.Cuz I think maybe that sounds thecreepiest. I don’t know.Yeah. All right. Well, uh, look out forRemfan if you see him and, uh,and you want to let us know, uh, wherehe's at and what he means.Otherwise,Uh, if you would like to become a partof making this show happen, and beone of our favorite people, you canbecome one of our patrons.
