## 📝 Summary:
The livestream explores **Figma Dev Mode MCP** and a VS Code setup to generate UI code from Figma selections for a “Sendig” theme build. After enabling the **local MCP server** and connecting via VS Code, the host tests **seven MCP tools** (notably, *Generate UI Code*) against multiple frames. Outputs capture fonts and some colors but **miss on layout, background, and structure** ([6:55–8:04](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=415)). Experiments swapping model backends (Gemini vs. Claude) and target outputs (React/Tailwind defaults vs. “plain HTML/CSS”) surface **defaults and limitations** ([25:58–27:12](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=1558), [27:33–28:07](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=1653)). The big takeaway: **design structure matters**. Poorly “containerized” Figma layers hinder faithful code generation; more semantic components, variables, and layer naming improve results. The host resolves to **rebuild with better Figma structure** and **manually code** where needed, using MCP for incremental refinements—not one-shot conversions ([48:28–49:02](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=2908), [59:58–61:06](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=3598)).

## 📖 Main Content:
The session opens with **technical difficulties** (overlay/chat window and display glitches) that contextualize the real-world friction of live tooling ([2:34–3:50](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=154)). After enabling **Figma Dev Mode MCP** and wiring it to **VS Code** ([4:51–5:29](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=291)), the host enumerates MCP tools: mapping Figma nodes to code components, generating UI code/screenshots, extracting variables, and “design system rules” ([5:32–6:21](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=332)).
Initial runs on a complex **front page** show **partial visual fidelity**—correct font family and some color tokens—but **incorrect layout, mispositioned menu, wrong background** ([6:55–8:04](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=415)). The prompt was “Convert the Figma link to HTML and CSS” ([8:12–8:28](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=492)); results suggest **frame complexity and weak semantic grouping** limit conversion quality. The host hypothesizes that **simpler pages** (e.g., “sample page”, clear header/footer groups) might fare better ([9:42–10:20](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=582)).
Tooling trials ensue: attempts to open **Sketch** originals fail ([13:34–16:39](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=814)); **Gemini** stalls and injects Tailwind/React defaults; **Claude** appears steadier ([19:45–24:10](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=1185), [25:58–27:12](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=1558), [26:58–27:12](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=1618)). The host learns that MCP’s default *getCode* skews to **React + Tailwind**, **customizable by prompt** ([27:00–27:12](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=1620), [27:33–28:07](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=1653)).
A pragmatic pivot follows: **iterate on the generated base** by targeting concrete UI bugs (dropdown chevron direction, search icon placement) and committing changes incrementally ([33:44–36:12](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=2024), [37:13–39:08](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=2233), [41:30–42:03](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=2490), [45:00–45:05](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=2700)). Still, **menu shifts** and color mismatches recur ([44:52–45:11](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=2692)). The host evaluates plugins (e.g., 10up Figma→theme.json exporter) but suspects **design not structured for exporter expectations** ([49:07–50:14](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=2947)).
The key insight arrives when examining **Twenty Twenty-Five’s Figma**: clear **header/body/footer layers**, semantic naming, and componentized blocks yield more faithful MCP output ([52:24–55:06](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=3144), [55:49–56:04](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=3349), [59:58–60:21](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=3598)). The plan: **rebuild with proper Figma structure**, then **use MCP for targeted iteration** instead of end-to-end generation ([60:53–61:41](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=3653)).
### 🗒️ Notes
- **🔧 Setup & hiccups**
- Display/chat overlay issues; “more I stream, more problems” ([2:34–3:12](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=154), [3:24–3:50](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=204)).
- Enable **Figma local MCP** → copy local URL; VS Code **HTTP MCP** client config ([4:51–5:29](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=291)).
- Seven tools visible (map to code, generate UI code/screenshots, variables, rules) ([5:32–6:21](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=332)).
- **🧪 First conversion (Front Page)**
- Prompt: “Convert the Figma link to HTML and CSS” ([8:12–8:28](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=492)).
- **Good:** correct font, some colors; **Bad:** layout off, background wrong, menu mispositioned ([6:55–8:04](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=415), [7:22–7:59](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=442)).
- **🧭 Strategy pivot**
- Try **simpler frames** (header/footer evident) ([9:42–10:20](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=582)).
- Consider **Claude vs Gemini**; Gemini freezes; defaults to Tailwind/React ([19:45–24:10](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=1185), [26:58–27:12](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=1618)).
- Learn: *getCode* defaults configurable by prompt ([27:00–28:07](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=1620)).
- **🧱 Iteration workflow**
- Branching/committing changes; fix **dropdown arrow**; **search icon placement** ([33:44–36:12](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=2024), [37:13–39:08](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=2233)).
- Some changes regress layout (menu shift) ([44:52–45:11](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C49L3CVCsjo&t=2692)).
- **🧩 Design structure matters*

Alright, I’m having some technical issues today with some of my software.I don’t know why I’m having these issues; it's annoying me, and I’ve also just realized that my screen is not set correctly, soI’m going to fix it.Hang on, what’s going on here? No, maybe it is correct.Yeah, that looks right.Let’s check that. The more I stream, the more I find problems; okay, it is working, so that’s fine. Now I’m just seeing myself in myself.
Okay.I don’t know why that’s not working; that’s exceedingly annoying.Anyway, I’m supposed to have my little chat window pop up on the screen above me here.It doesn’t seem to be working today, so, oh well.I’ll just have to do without it.Hey Cameron, you seem to be the only person around. So last week I was getting back to my Sendig stream — my Sendig theme bold, Sendig themebuild, and I discovered that Figma has something called MCP in dev mode, or thedev mode MCP server; and so I was able to get myself a dev seat through work, soI now have a dev license for Figma. And I have enabled the dev modeby going to the little Figma icon here, preferences, enable local MCP server. And that sets up the MCP server on this local URL.And then in VS Code,I’ve just chosen VS Codebecause it’s easy to set up MCP and VS Code personally.I have configured the MCP server.
It basically uses the HTTP typeand then you pass in the URL networks. So it's just magically there. So there are seven tools available, and they do things like add code, connect map,or whatever that does. They can map the currently selected Figma node to a code component.Okay, create design system rules.Generate UI code for a given node or the currently selectednode in the Figma desktop app.Use the noted parameters to specify the node ID.
If no node ID is provided, the currently selected node willbe used. If a URL is provided, extract the node ID from theURL so it can use URLs.There's a mapping or some other feature. There's metadata. It can generate a screenshot. And it can get something called variable definitions. So I tested this earlier, and the results are pretty interesting, I must say.So I was using the front page option.I'm going to zoom in on that quickly. And this is what it looks like.So that's the front page area and all the information it has.And this is what it generated. Now, it certainly isn't perfect, but itis interesting what it was able to get right. So it definitely has the little, let's type by side these. It has the little sending block at the top there.
I don't know how to remove some of these things,so let's get that out of the way. There we go.It has this little sending block here. It's moved this block to the wrong place. It's put the menu along here, but at least the menu looks like it's trying to do something. It looks like it's selected the right font, which is cool. And it's got the colors and things right. But it doesn't quite have the layoutscorrect for the stuff. It doesn't have all the fun background colors;this background color is totally wrong. But it does have this sort of layout, more or less.So it's not as bad as my experiments last week, but it's still nowhere near as close as what it should be.
So what I'm trying to do nowis I'm trying to figure out how to improve this. The prompt that I gave it,I'm going to see if I can find the previous prompt. It was literally a one-shot again.I said, "Convert the Figma link to HTML and CSS."And that's what I got.So I'm trying to think about how we can improve the promptsto match the Figma design.I'm not sure how we do that.I don't know Figma well enoughto know how to tell it to do that.So I may have to learn how to use Figma better, which is also a strong possibility.
I'm wondering if I give it some better informationbecause the design isn't broken up intosort of logical areas either. So that might be part of the problem.I don't know.It certainly is interesting.
So I feel like if we—I wonder if one of the other pages has—see, that has a footer area, sort of a main content.I wonder if we take one of the simpler pages, like the sample page. And we kind of break that down.So like that's group 4, for example. But that's really the footer.
And I'm wondering if that's one of the reasons it's not quite handling thingsbecause it doesn't have like a logical header area. Not quite sure myself. Now, what I do remember at some pointis I'm pretty sure Emily actually created this originallyin Sketch.
I want to try and see if I can find those designs.Pretty sure she sent it to me in Sketch. I'm gonna open up a tab and open up my email accountoff to the side here.So that I can go and search. There we go.
I'm wondering if it had better layout areasin Sketch, which are designed there. So let me sign in here.I think I might have an account.I know Sketch even less.
I don't think I even have the Mac installed anymore.I may need to install the app.Andyeah.This one just drags at its applications. All right, let's give it a try.I can't type.Yep, okay, it's there. So let's see if we can go back to the front page. And edit this in Sketch. My computer seems to be very slow today.I don't know if it's because I've got too many things open.
Here. Good grief. Why? I'm sure there’s a way around this.Shifting key to enter save mode.I don't know why Apple does this.Maybe I got to resist with this stuff.Let's see.Nope.Cronopin back in Sketch.
Okay, I can't check that out now.(laughs)Okay, let's just scrap that idea. I can't stand it when things are going to happen. All right, let's go back to Figma.So...I wonder if we can...
Let's try the link again.Let's see here.Let me delete this first version.Try prompt. So when I did this prompt, I was using Claude Sonnet.I don't know why I was using Claude Sonnet.
I wonder if GPT would be quicker.I have no idea which one of these is better.Let's see; it still looks so out of place online.Nine months ago, Claude Schumpeter, Chetcha Pity,Okay, so let's say using the following Figma template, convert the home page design into an index.html page.Yeah, let's see what that does. You might as well see what you can do with that. Before I do that, I'm just going to check something.Okay, I'm going to check out.I'm going to check out trunk, pull, and then I'm going to check out my speaker and create a new branch, and let's call it Figma MCP Gemini.
Let’s do that.Okay.Start the server. That's running.Okay.Let's do this.See what it does.Okay.Okay.Okay, I'm going to allow in the session. So let's run and get the code.Interesting.And it seems to have stopped. It's either broken or it’s failed, or I don’t know what’s happened.I can't tell it to continue.Oh, it was actually doing something.I don’t know why it hung there. Why does it think it’s tailwood glasses?
I don't think it's Talwood.I wonder if that's Gemini being stupid.I get the feeling that Gemini is not going to do a good job of this.I don't understand why it keeps freezing here either.Very strange.Okay, this is becoming arest of my time. No, I'm not enjoying this process that keeps freezing.Jim and I were no good. Let's try Claude again.Let's copy that up.Let's go back to Claude.Let's see how Claude does.OfLet's see what Get Code does.Good code. That's returning, it's like returning,it's returning React components. That's why it thinks it's React. So it seems very specifically designedtowards building React apps.Interesting.
Can you know, can you see that? What if there's some documentation about the different DevMode tools?Yeah, there you go.The default output is react-ntel, which you can customize through prompts.I wonder if I can generate my Figma selection into block theme JSON or something.I wonder if I can get a better response if I actually say play an HTML and CSS.I mean, it's doing HTML and CSS.I wonder if we can. It's rate on the initial design.
Once the first version is done, okay, let's try opening it up in a browser. It's fine. I'm okay with that. It's actually got a test in refine. It's a strip. Interesting.(soft music)Okay. This will be interesting. Now I wonder if I can use this as a base and we can improve on it as we go.It's still not quite there.
It's a lot better. The colors don't seem quite right. The whole thing is messed up, but I feel like it's a lot closer than what the original one was.So I wonder ifwe could fix that.I don't know if it's possible to fix that. How would we go about doing that? That's the question.Okay.AndI'll try to think about how I would design or code the CIFOS to this myself.I feel like the header would end somewhere around here and then you have this area kind of customized.Okay, so one day if we can.So let's start this.I'm just trying to get up there first.So.(keyboard clicking)The drop down arrow seems to be the wrong way around. So let's start with that.
Maybe that's the way to do it,is to try and fix things as we go.Maybe that's the way to do it.So let's try that.Okay, I want to see here where I am.I want to rename this branch to something else.Rename, git branch -M.(mumbles)Let's commit that.Right.Initial.
(mumbles)Okay, now let's see if we can fix some stuff. So let's say, first of all, the mainnavigation drop-down arrow isn't displaying correctly. So I think what I'mgoing to do is I'm going to start a new chat. Right, wait, wait, wait, wait. Let's keep all of those.Okay.So let's see if we can start fixing some of these bugs. The main navigation drop-down error is displayed in the wrong direction.Okay.Okay, I probably closed the locust and it's just a delta she way.Okay, that at least works. Then let's say compare the search icon to the original design. It should appear next to the word "search"between the words "contact" and "search."So let's say, compare the search iconto the original design. It should appear between the "contact" and "search" menu items. Now it's picking it up from that screenshot,so I'm going to delete the screenshot.Let's delete that.
Start moving down.I'm going to continue.Oh, did I just lose?Okay, let's try and fix that.I've just lost the changes from mycursive mistake.I've just lost my changes for fixing the dropdown arrow story.Let's try that again.Okay, I keep forgetting to save my changes.Save them.Okay, let's just make sure of that.Okay, that takes a bit longer. All right. So now what I want to do is, there I want touse this code version of cursor rules.I'm trying to look like this, but I can never remember.(soft music)Oh yeah, part of the instructions, that's right.Let's create some cluster instructions.Single GitHub co-file instructions, one or more instructions with empty files.Okay.All right, singleages.empty file,it's currently experimental. So let's go with GitHub co-file instructions without.Um...I want to...Automation.No, I suppose I can just—Too much thinking involved.
I want to just vibe code.I can't, but I just know.OK.So let's go commit this change.Let's do it that way.Okay, let's work on the other stuff.I wonder if we have to send the link every timeif we want to...If you can multiple select things.I want to just select how much stuff. That's the job to do that.Um...So let's try to view the menu in the Figma template and fix the search icon in the menu.(soft music)Okay, let's see if that worked. So let's keep all the changes. Now let's move the whole menu over. This is going to become frustrating really quickly.
So I don't think this is going to work.I'm going to have to go back to doing this the way that I was doing it.I'm not finding the whole MCP situation to be beneficial.I think part of the problem, the problem, if you will, but part of it is the fact that these things are kind of,and this is nobody's fault. This is actually a good example of what could happen. These things are kind of not in sort of predefined containers. So you would have to work within those containers.I keep getting phoned and I keep ignoring the phone call. And so I think if I could containerize these things a bit better,That might work better. I wonder if...
like if I could put this into more of a container, put this into more of a container.I'll be honest, I don't know enough about Figma. I should probably spend some more timeunderstanding how Figma works and how you might convert things from Figma to HTML.Let's see, there were some plugins I was looking at recently. Let's see this thing;it's a code, so let's see what that does.Let's go tell when Vector's not supported. You see that just does. Please stop folding me; I've already ignored your call twice. I'm busy.See.I don't know if that works.
There's going to be a whole bunch of doves.I wonder if that's not what...that doesn't really look useful.(Keyboard clicking.)Hmm.So I think what I'm gonna have to dois I'm gonna have to build this as a theme from scratch, which is what I was doing originally, and then customize as we go.I'm not finding these tools that allow me to turn thisinto HTML to be very useful. It certainly is interesting to see what I can come up with, but it's not...It's not getting me where I need to go.I mean, the menu's all in the wrong place now. This is just the wrong color completely. So I think once I'm building this upand I need to do small things,I think this is gonna be helpful.
But trying to do it all from scratch,it's just not a good experience. The other thing that I did try,I’m going to just drag this off the window quicklyand make sure I’m on the right channel.I was just using furniture. There is a 10-up Figma WordPress theme JSON exporter. I haveinstalled that. I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong. It’s very possible I’m doingsomething wrong. But when I use it,it doesn’t seem to do anything. So my guess is that the design is not really made for that plug-in.So I think what I’m finding is I’mgoing to have to do this the old-fashioned way.And that’s going to be taking the theme, taking the templates and the styling, and all of thatand just converting it manually.
It doesn’t seem to be where the play shape is.This will happen automatically for me,which I kind of expected. It was nice to try, though.Even the MCP stuff, I wonder.I wonder if creating the design system rules would give us anything better. Now, you see structure in your Figma for alphabetical, providing the best context for your terms of use.Use components for buttons, use components, use variables, name layers semantically.I do feel like that’s somethingthat might need to change in Figma.I think what might be helpful is if I could,if I could reach out to somebodywho knows how Figma works and say,“Hey, this is what somebody's created for me.”"How would you change this so that the design"is a little bit better?"In terms of the structure of the design, that might be the next step.
I think when Emily designed this, she did it in Sketch and then migrated it to Figma'cause she doesn't think she really uses Figma. So there might be a way we can improve the Figma process.Let me try something.
It was a WordPress Figma theme.I think it was 2025 or something.I think there was a 2025 Figma theme design. Yeah, here we go.I wanna have a look at what that looks like and see what that generates.Because that might give us some ideas. See how that looks.
So there are templates. So let's have a look at personal block default. So there's the index for example. So there's a header, see?And then there's the h1 and then there's post pagination for post.So it's almost like, I feel like this is structured in a way. I mean, it's obviously more blocky, quote unquote.
So there's not like the weird stuff that Emily has done, but everything's in more of a, like a layer.I feel like that's the way to do it.So I feel like if we can get that sorted out, we can get a better solution.
Let me try, let me try this one.Let's try a few things here.I'm going to,first I'm gonna make sure that I'm in the right account. How would I,how would I copy this to my,I don't know anything about Figma. How would I get this in here?Okay, here we go.So let's open that up.It shows that I'm busy doing that,so let's close that down quickly. So let's see how that handles.
(keyboard clicking)Okay, this must be enabled. No, it looks like it's currently enabled, okay.So let's see if that gives us,I'm assuming it's gonna give me a betterkind of response anyway, because of the designand the theme; the theme design is just a little bit less.I wanna say, oh, it's a little bit more,I'm sorry, boring, boring's the wrong word, but it's more straightforward. But let's take this one and copy link to selectionand say convert the blog index. No, wrong one, I keep opening up, okay, so.
I'm going to invert the blog index into plain HTML and CSS.See what that does. Why is it fetching the web page? Why is it not MCPing?
Oh, because I'm inside of the server.Hang on.Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop this, stop, stop them so you serve us. Do that again.
So I'm thinking my next steps after this.I've tried the theme JSON Explorer.I'm not trying that on; maybe I should try that.My next steps are gonna be, I think, can the design be better structured? All of this helps.Let's have a look and see what...Okay, what else? What does the process look like to convert a designinto block theme templates?I need to have a chat with somebody about thatand kind of get their process.I've got a bunch of people that I work withthat do this for a living,so I'm gonna reach out to them and find out.
I feel like if the Figma design is, quote unquote, structured better, then this will help things.I don't know how to do that,so it might be a case of getting somebodyto show me how to do that. And if I can get that right, I think I might start getting more towardswhere I need to be. Let's have a look at that compared to...
Where was I?Yeah, that's definitely looking more like what we wanted. As I say, it is a much more structured and streamlined. There do seem to be some bugs.Yeah, it's still not perfect; it still makes mistakes, like it got that stories thing wrong. But it's definitely abetter one-to-one look, but that hasn't been said.
The layout itself is a lot more straightforward. So I think that's going to be my next step. My next step is going to be tospeak to somebody who knows how Figma works and to talk to them about thisdesign. Nothing against Emily. I know she's not a Figma user, but I dofeel like having... I don't know why OBS is trying to finddevices on the local network, but okay. I do feel like having a bit ofa conversation about it. So that's going to be my next step. I'm going to do that.
That research in the background between now and next week. Hopefully by next week,Friday, I've got some answers. But I feel like this is something that we can use, something that we can work with. Or maybe not. Maybe next week I'll come back andI'll have a totally different idea. But that's what I'm going to call it today, folks. Very short little stream, not very exciting. I'm just going to go ahead andapologize. This is what I've been working on most of today. So that's me for today. I will seeyou next week with hopefully something more interesting than just tempting MCP tools and getting away. Bye!(soft music), Sendig & Figma MCP, Jonathan Bossenger, 01k5rqmkkfrq8benr76hwh2zpt.
