The Nazis constructed hundreds of camps across Europe for the forced labor, medical experimentation and mass extermination of "*Untermenschen*" (people deemed subhuman or of no utilitarian value), including Jews, ethnic Slavs, Roma (aka Gypsies), Soviet prisoners of war, the elderly, homosexuals, people with mental illness or disabilities, non-conforming priests and pastors and members of the resistance.
"The Holocaust was a collective endeavor by thousands of ordinary people utterly consumed by the hatred of difference," British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said. "That is the hatred we stand against today and it is a collective endeavor for all of us to defeat it."
On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops from the 60th Army of the First Ukrainian Front rescued 7,000 prisoners from Auschwitz. But since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, representatives from Moscow have not been welcome at anniversary events at Auschwitz. Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, a Jew, was in attendance this year.
Gady Gronich, the CEO of the Conference of European Rabbis, warned that targeting minorities is now again becoming mainstream. In many countries, extremism and bigotry are increasing. Nicole Romain, spokesperson for the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, said, "On average, 96% of Jews told us they have encountered antisemitism in their life, and 80% thought that it has been getting worse in recent years."
For 60 years, [Naftali Fürst](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIKH0aP8wGEF4ljhXMWd-2BfK8BU2hw7eTCC2od7IqNWY9ihcisrRuosUG8UM3yKCNc8EBPsy7iJZJ0-2BE8FQXSEuo-3D2FWC_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92Yma-2BrZVeAA-2FWxWsN-2BQbugJtyheFyDnSTHLoG-2FhifMg-2FqTr9GHAuAwcYIL5sGGdfmpuHxm8-2FZ7DWGWiwjQssxQpXbkUZK1eW7tdP3wMzmM184lvG8gyitsMqHIFOjybOQvWviGwIW0-2B3c4XTBBuas6fIJA5cf0TBKZnWqjPMo5edf2qq001NJc5GS9IYFB-2BDrMKk4RdFv59wjQyhkyKWlGmOv8XdjTtB17qCXP9xsd-2FZ7wMp9SUJku-2FsXEF-2FcS0BATmL6vOe4Oy9zOjQaamTXG9Zw-3D) didn't talk about his experience during the Holocaust or speak a word of German, his mother tongue. Finally, in 2005, as he began to realize that there were fewer survivors every year who could bear witness to the Nazi genocide, he decided to share his story. Fürst was 12 years old when he and his family arrived at Auschwitz from Bratislava, then part of Czechoslovakia. His father told him and his brother, Shmuel, "You must adapt and survive, and even if you're suffering, you must come back." While the boys and their parents survived, the rest of their extended family were all killed.
Now a resident of Israel, Fürst was devastated when Hamas launched its attack on October 7, 2023, in the area where his granddaughter lives. "We saw the horrors, that we couldn't imagine this type of horror is happening in 2023, 80 years after the Holocaust," he recounted.
While he rued the violence of that day and the subsequent suffering millions have experienced since then, Fürst described the Holocaust as "a multi-year 'death industry' with massive infrastructure and camps that could kill 10,000 people a day for months at a time."
"I feel the pain of everyone who is suffering, everywhere in the world, because I think I know what suffering is," he said, lamenting the losses on both sides in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
For half a century, [Manfred Goldberg](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIKH0aP8wGEF4ljhXMWd-2BfIpw3bO3RTV8c-2BxkWUEoaQJ8P8mzySDsI1DI5obsHy-2Bxq4We-2B5Q16aGy-2BG35k7gU9G8p-2FkE610onB9AbMKAdB8BT5k3_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92Yma-2BrZVeAA-2FWxWsN-2BQbugJtyheFyDnSTHLoG-2FhifMg-2FqTr9GHAuAwcYIL5sGGdfmpuNGifu2G892yFXhf-2F9dcs9M3lVx650094mbroxCyeOXwDtL5Sa5h0rUy1ywuMq34WmZsvSKFAG2ln7j3O5RcBAbO6LSDH-2FjJNva-2FH57dIuZWJs365m4zv4VGc4lCGMxFVsXr7okyK1fL3boW7rIXeRKICuXMTphfF6t8Lk3HZ5w-2FuHvkx3iClhTqNt5dLgt7uAO7begRSMfH-2BId4s50AHiQ-3D) also maintained silence about his experience in the camps, wanting to spare his children the burden of knowing the horrors that he endured. He finally agreed to speak up, in part to fight Holocaust denial and rising antisemitism, he said, because "silence never helps the oppressed. It always helps the oppressors."
British Prime Minister Starmer promised that every school in the UK would teach the truth about the Holocaust, "because by learning from survivors we can develop that empathy for others and that appreciation of our common humanity, which is the ultimate way to defeat the hatred of difference."
Altogether the Nazis murdered 6 million Jews, or two-thirds of all of Europe's Jews, and 5 million others they deemed undesirable, in the Holocaust. The population of Oświęcim was nearly 60% Jewish in 1939 before the Nazis arrived. Weisz-Gut lost most of her family in the Holocaust, but is determined to live as a Jew in the heart of the town where the Nazis built the largest death machine in modern history.
"For me, it's a statement that they tried to break us and exterminate us, but they failed," she said. "We are ... here to say 'you didn't succeed. No more. Not again.'"

**The Big Questions**
1. Why is it important to reflect on the Holocaust?
2. What factors contribute to the rise in antisemitism, Islamophobia and other forms of prejudice around the world?
3. What are we remembering today about the Holocaust, and which lessons have we already clearly forgotten?
4. What might our faith guide us to do today if we were at risk -- or were asked to risk our lives to save others?
5. How does your church care for people who might be at risk of discrimination and abuse?
**Confronting the News With Scripture and Hope**Here are some Bible verses to guide your discussion:
**Exodus 1:17-21***But the midwives feared God; they did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but they let the boys live. So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this and allowed the boys to live?" The midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them." So God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very strong. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.* (For context, read [Exodus 1:9-22.](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxTZnIxspyl-2FH5UeJwRbVY5xpSAAnEXHrGZJ2-2FLc0mBFsa2vBoxzW0RjmYkN4nyzuok0xy_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92Yma-2BrZVeAA-2FWxWsN-2BQbugJtyheFyDnSTHLoG-2FhifMg-2FqTr9GHAuAwcYIL5sGGdfmpuH9YeBHgiV7ScS1SDrsVVP8GfAzXgQOtdSwNYl-2FhDp3jtm3EloriRv3c9kRzwsXm2GEQ5tYM7nGlfKgkmLJrBNM6HFRPYgJSfrAFKIGFypzYJYqzM-2FR3Bzzx0a-2Fq44f9OL6pJVgl5zHHDygFhCcb-2B-2BG-2BcFCduHgwH1bbSL6K5L-2Bif124HhM1bGi8OBkaSfzpjuNNMzNltTPtWyO6B597FZI-3D))

Some time after the Hebrew slave, Joseph, had saved the nation of Egypt from starvation, he died, and a new king arose "who did not know Joseph" (v. 8) and his contributions to the welfare of the Egyptians. The Pharaoh promoted a kind of "Great Replacement Conspiracy Theory," suggesting to his people that the Israelites were becoming "more numerous and more powerful than we," which required that they be treated harshly. So they oppressed the Israelites with forced labor (vv. 9-14).
When Pharaoh's plan backfired, and the Israelites grew in strength and number, he demanded a "Final Solution" to the Hebrew problem: the infanticide of Hebrew boys upon their birth (vv. 15-16).
> **Questions:** What can happen when people rise to power who forget or deliberately suppress knowledge of history? What did the midwives risk when they disobeyed the king's order? How did they justify their noncompliance? What should you do when you are given an order to obey a civil law that runs counter to the law of God?
**Esther 4:1, 13-16***When Mordecai learned all that had been done, Mordecai tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes and went through the city, wailing with a loud and bitter cry; … Mordecai told them to reply to Esther, "Do not think that in the king's palace you will escape any more than all the other Jews. For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father's family will perish. Who knows? Perhaps you have come to royal dignity for just such a time as this." Then Esther said in reply to Mordecai, "Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will also fast as you do. After that I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish."* (For context, read [Esther 4:1-17](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxxXPNpVHit5-2BPG0H6e8QLgSD7eirJOU55a4Gxc8cGy7c-3DS4gs_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92Yma-2BrZVeAA-2FWxWsN-2BQbugJtyheFyDnSTHLoG-2FhifMg-2FqTr9GHAuAwcYIL5sGGdfmpuDTJXZCH1exQBM1nE2Ea73ynhH7-2BrzQZbgYtqzCcNwyLiTQXf-2BUROYM2RCjqRzlr-2BNkAy7XzjybeCMVBfgdS9S3jPpz52YyeF9Iv2tIVywEdGainwfOYkRE3MAayJfKOmRXCILH-2FxJlvscSCoJ-2BUqmQ7O-2Bk0HtmnJyYQDFRX2z392H9Y7Z9E7PVmFfdoqUtYSR9UvgQ2DG06CVkUxfo3bjM-3D).)
When Mordecai learned of the machinations of Haman, who was determined to wipe out the Jews, he didn't hide his distress, but openly demonstrated in the city square, calling attention to his anguish by tearing his clothes, putting on sackcloth and ashes, and wailing loudly. Hearing about her relative's actions, Esther wanted to relieve his pain by providing fresh garments, but Mordecai wouldn't accept a Band-Aid when radical healing was needed (v. 4).
Esther first needed to find out the truth of what was happening and why. Mordecai took it upon himself to inform and educate her, so she could grasp the situation and take appropriate action (vv. 5-9). Then Esther reminded Mordecai that confronting the person in power was extremely risky; if the king was not receptive, she could lose her life (vv. 10-11).
> **Questions:** What steps did Mordecai and Esther take to strengthen each other and their community for the fight that lay ahead? What can we learn from the actions they took?
**Mark 12:13-17** *Then they sent to [Jesus] some Pharisees and some Herodians to trap him in what he said. And they came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are sincere and show deference to no one, for you do not regard people with partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?" But knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, "Why are you putting me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me see it." And they brought one. Then he said to them, "Whose head is this and whose title?" They answered, "Caesar's." Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that are God's." The question the Pharisees and Herodians put to Jesus in the text is really a question about whom we choose to serve.
In the 1960s, there was what we now call a "meme" going around, with the picture of George Washington on a dollar bill, and the phrase "Render unto Washington the things that are Washington's, and to God the things that are God's."
Centuries before that conversation took place, Joshua presented the people of Israel with essentially the same decision, asking them to "choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living." Whatever they decided, Joshua declared, "as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD" ([Joshua 24:14-15](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxLCLf3FQCD-2Bou6xsGv0WLLiiGjaWk6yutANjvOYfTfgMWnmglheb726tukEDIf-2B2-2FB-BE_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92Yma-2BrZVeAA-2FWxWsN-2BQbugJtyheFyDnSTHLoG-2FhifMg-2FqTr9GHAuAwcYIL5sGGdfmpuGAw-2FS7tfNnjrVJeA7QxU7aLIwb7qCuxgGiE8ueqZNU8Wwkhs7zL8upjjP8B8yaXyhR8ZKogPKwdn14g8uKSCgVcplIYWTRwTtTF1uVf-2Fy3PELGIehQ4UyerlW1YaXG3Jj8YYiW4PiDYxIFboRbgeuS1fCptvgG4AROPKtvfUSkqX5ZLqAHoNVMMc1zSnkxyw53GPGhWMliVBmey585UYxw-3D)).

**Acts 23:1-5***While Paul was looking intently at the council he said, "Brothers, up to this day I have lived my life with a clear conscience before God." Then the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near him to strike him on the mouth. At this Paul said to him, "God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Are you sitting there to judge me according to the law, and yet in violation of the law you order me to be struck?" Those standing nearby said, "Do you dare to insult God's high priest?" And Paul said, "I did not realize, brothers, that he was high priest, for it is written, 'You shall not speak evil of a leader of your people.'"* (For context, read [Acts 23:1-11](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxkN8A28kQlPh9mjdoFVTB9TqHGeqekFBY0WqvMVmhrkroj2LGVl9LCG1Lp1Qu9r490yoC_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92Yma-2BrZVeAA-2FWxWsN-2BQbugJtyheFyDnSTHLoG-2FhifMg-2FqTr9GHAuAwcYIL5sGGdfmpuAswc7pm6l72pOi-2FcHlFqHRfuG9oTGIBaS15pNSCxHbVFQrxKRxmcldfHEzqjS8Vadb36xIjuefFMwf6nzQZJuk93ml-2FmInWMKv-2F26D5zqCRCgTMC647ZEJusTeFo-2B0tvC-2FPIt7ZzdEIRuz3aWy4XL6-2B7bnkyaz-2ByP4TMoeomNtllr4I693BjnutkvK2HndoBT8V4vBmQmpVJNzhc-2Fs-2Fh6U-3D).)
When Paul was brought up on charges because of his preaching of the death and resurrection of Jesus, he called the powerful high priest on his hypocrisy, for claiming to support law and order while breaking the law at the same time.

1. TWW Consultant James Gruetzner (a Lutheran Christian) writes, "I can still remember when my grade school-aged son, at the dinner table, said, 'There are people who want to kill Eve (not her real name) just because she's a Jew.' Eve was a good friend of his, and often considered us part of her family. We explained the pervasiveness of antisemitism, which was hard for him to understand. At a later date, during a trip to Europe, we visited the concentration camp museum at Dachau. My son hadn't wanted to go -- it was on his birthday that day! -- but, at the end, I think he understood." Such ideas were widely circulated in Nazi Germany as justification for the Holocaust. Stephen Haynes, professor of religious studies, concludes that, "although Christian anti-Judaism did not by itself make the Holocaust possible ... [it] could not have occurred without Christianity." ● Choose your attitude and choice of action when responding to situations. As noted by Holocaust survivor and psychiatrist, Dr. Victor Frankl, in his book, [Man's Search for Meaning](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPNeWVdClX8TsKtYv1QrfcmLegYuIqA7L4Ii4IW6NRDyrvAdK_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92Yma-2BrZVeAA-2FWxWsN-2BQbugJtyheFyDnSTHLoG-2FhifMg-2FqTr9GHAuAwcYIL5sGGdfmpuAjOrliArsNhicweAPVN7RyNpu7BQMzFtc5M-2FDG-2BIYoUXlzAu7cUX2hcyx46vpZvBqqMYP-2FJUPUauXwj0skorz3fYlFz9ctsXqDwC63LRIsLHStxZRIjWTwtPOa45VPGBeKPdJowHUHWV5keeitd4M6LQ-2F3xdsenq0uTnAgrZiE981VMdwqSeg2v-2FJekTMbSu1YmkzDFHHZdum4b2jNqmpw-3D): "Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation."
● Develop an inner life that nourishes you during times of despair.
● Take care of yourself.
● Create a support network. On December 12, 1944, on her 20th birthday, Fania Fainer received a heart-shaped birthday card with messages of hope in four languages from 18 fellow Auschwitz inmates, who had given up their food rations to glue eight pages together using a mix of bread and water. We all cope better with life's challenges when we do not face them alone.
● Find a way to serve and help others. This helps to put our own problems into perspective, has health benefits and enhances our self-esteem.
Which of these suggestions, or what other coping strategies, have you found most helpful in your own life?

● The duty of remembrance of each victim, not as a statistic, but as a human being who is "an entire universe."
● The responsibility to prevent "state-sanctioned incitement to hatred and genocide," as the Canadian courts affirmed, "the Holocaust did not begin in the gas chambers -- it began with words."
● The need to guard against "the bystander effect" or "crimes of indifference ... conspiracies of silence [since ...] indifference in the face of evil is acquiescence with evil itself."
● Remember and recognise the rescuers who demonstrate that "one person with compassion and the courage to act can confront evil, resist and transform history."
● The responsibility to hold perpetrators of war crimes accountable and bring them to justice. They must not be allowed to act with impunity.
● The responsibility to speak truth to power. As Elie Wiesel put it, "Cold-blooded murder and culture did not exclude each other. If the Holocaust proved anything, it is that a person can both love poems and kill children."
● The need to give voice to the voiceless and power to the powerless.
● The responsibility to repudiate false witness such as Holocaust denial that is designed "to bury and whitewash the crimes and atrocities of the Nazis."
Which of these lessons resonate most deeply with you?
