media figures lobby against being “pressured into war by Israel.” > - Trump’s stated rationale: to advance U.S. interests, remove Iran as a global threat, and oppose an “evil ideology,” while being unsure who should replace current leaders and fearing equally bad successors. > - Gulf allies’ perspective: having suffered over a thousand Iranian missiles and drones hitting bases, embassies, energy sites, and civilian infrastructure, they seek quick conflict termination to restore stability. > - Economic stakes: The Strait of Hormuz carries about one-fifth of global traded oil and major LNG volumes; war slows shipping, raising fuel and possibly food prices due to fertilizer disruption. > - Security framing: supply chains for energy, minerals, semiconductors, and data are cast as national security assets, not purely commercial. > - Religious rhetoric in the military: complaints allege commanders describe the war as part of “God’s divine plan,” cite Revelation and Armageddon, and claim Trump is “anointed” to spark end-times events—language not reflected in official policy. > - Discussion prompts invite Christians to weigh nuclear nonproliferation, terrorism, regime change, economic stability, and theological narratives as possible war aims for individuals and churches. > - 1 Samuel 17: David rejects Saul’s armor, relies on a sling and stones, and trusts God to defeat Goliath, modeling dependence on God rather than conventional military strength. > - Obadiah: God condemns Edom’s gloating, looting, and blocking or handing over fugitives, teaching that God expects restraint and protection of innocents even amid warfare. > - Luke 14: Jesus uses a king counting the cost of war to illustrate that disciples must consider the heavy cost of following him, including relinquishing possessions. > - Revelation 16: demonic spirits gather kings to Harmagedon, but God delays the battle, signaling both mercy and commitment to judge oppression; cities symbolizing wealth and pride face divine wrath. > - Ethical questions: Is modern Israel equivalent to biblical Israel in God’s purposes? Is God automatically on modern Israel’s side in war? How should Christians assess Just War criteria in this Iran conflict? > - Civilian harm: a likely U.S. Tomahawk strike on an Iranian elementary school killing many, including children, highlights the moral imperative to minimize civilian casualties and “collateral damage.” > - Just War evaluation: proponents argue U.S. strikes meet probability of success, last resort (after diplomacy), and proportionality; readers are invited to critically assess those claims. > - Relational analogy: ending the Iran nuclear agreement and then bombing Iran prompts reflection on when “blowing up” personal relationships is warranted and what collateral harm may result. > - Closing exhortation: Christians are urged to put faith in God’s power, practice fairness in conflict, remember God’s care for the suffering, and shape political stances and relationships accordingly. > ## 📚 References > - [Assessing U.S. Progress in the Iran War – The Washington Institute](https://www.washingtoninstitute.org/) > - [The Goals of the War – The New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/) > - [From Missiles to Minerals: The Strategic Meaning Behind the Iran Strike – Fox News](https://www.foxnews.com/) > - [U.S. Troops Were Told War on Iran Was 'All Part of God's Divine Plan', Watchdog Alleges – The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/) > - [Just War criteria discussion – The Washington Stand](https://washingtonstand.com/) > ## 🗣️ Paraphrase > - Paragraph A paraphrase: The piece reviews the early stages of the U.S.–Israel war with Iran, outlines different national objectives, and asks what Christian goals—if any—should shape support for the conflict. > - Paragraph B paraphrase: Using scriptural texts and ethical questions, it challenges believers to trust God rather than military power, reject injustice in warfare, count the costs of both war and discipleship, and avoid misusing apocalyptic language. > ## 📰 Newsletter > This week’s note look Dear Class Members, In the weeks since military conflict with Iran began on February 28, involving the armed forces of the United States and Israel, numerous objectives for the fighting have been stated. In response, this installment of *The Wired Word* will focus on what goals for the war, if any, should be supported by the Christian community. ![](https://www.thewiredword.com/_img/tww_logo_email.jpg) **Diverse Goals Exist in War With Iran** ***The Wired Word*** **for the Week of March 15, 2026** **In the News** Two weeks into the war with Iran, the United States seems to be focused on four main goals: destroying Iran's navy, eliminating Iran's missile capabilities, preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and disrupting Iranian support for armed militias such as Hezbollah and the Houthis. Although President Trump hinted that regime change was a goal in his initial remarks regarding the war, his administration has not consistently expressed this desire. According to *The Washington Institute for Near East Policy,* American and Israeli goals overlap but are not identical. Israel is focused mainly on the missile threat posed by Iran, which is understandable given the fact that Israel is within the range of Iranian missiles. Israel is also more interested in regime change than the United States, and has focused on killing political and military leaders of the regime, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Not all Americans are supportive of this close alliance between the United States and Israel. *The New York Time*s reports that some Democrats feel that Israel has led us into this war, and that Israel should not be dictating American policy. Some Republicans agree: Tucker Carlson has visited the White House repeatedly in the past month, arguing that America should not be pressured into war by Israel. In a letter to Congress, President Trump said that his goal was to advance American national interests and to eliminate Iran as a global threat. In an Oval Office statement, he gave his reason for attacking Iran in one short sentence: "It's an evil ideology." Although he is not sure who he would like to see in power, Trump said that the worst outcome would be leaders who were "as bad" as their predecessors. Shortly after the president's statement, the hardline son of Khamenei was named Iran's next supreme leader. America's Persian Gulf allies have the goal of regional stability. Iran has fired more than a thousand missiles and drones at Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait. Targets have included American bases and embassies in these countries, as well as energy installations, airports and resorts. Because the lives of many residents are being threatened and disrupted, these countries want the war to end as quickly as possible. The United States shares this goal of stability in the region, since the area around Iran is an important part of the global economy. The Strait of Hormuz, which is along the coast of Iran, is one of the most critical maritime arteries in the world, carrying roughly one-fifth of globally traded oil and a significant share of liquefied natural gas exports. "Energy routes, mineral supply chains, semiconductor inputs and data networks are no longer treated as commercial concerns alone," reports *Fox News*; "they are now regarded as national security assets." The American goals for the war include achieving economic stability as well as fighting terrorism. Shipping in the Strait of Hormuz has slowed since the outbreak of the war, leading to higher gas prices in the United States. Food prices may also increase, since the Persian Gulf is a major source of the world's fertilizers. In addition, some American military commanders have allegedly been using the language of biblical "end times" as they have talked with troops about United States involvement in the Iran war. According to *The Guardian*, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) has received more than 200 complaints from service members across all branches of the armed forces, including the Marines, Air Force and Space Force. The use of such language is not United States policy. One service member, in a unit that could be deployed any day to join operations against Iran, told MRFF in a complaint that their commander had "urged us to tell our troops that this was 'all part of God's divine plan' and he specifically referenced numerous citations out of the Book of Revelation referring to Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus Christ." Furthermore, the commander said that "President Trump has been anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth." The service member's complaint was filed on behalf of 15 troops, including 11 Christians, one Muslim and one Jew. **Applying the News Story** Discuss the war in Iran, focusing on eliminating the nuclear threat, fighting terrorism, promoting regime change, achieving economic stability, improving the relationship between Israel and the United States, and participating in God's plan. Among your class members, look for areas of agreement and acknowledge where differences exist. **The Big Questions** 1. Since the cessation of Iranian development of nuclear weapons has been a goal of numerous American administrations, what do you think should be done to reduce this threat? Where do you see advantages and disadvantages to the current military strategy? 2. Where do you stand on the subject of regime change in Iran? What is the best approach to replacing the current leadership, in your opinion? 3. How do you feel about the relationship between the United States and Israel? How could the relationship be improved, in terms of both support and accountability? 4. What is your response to the use of biblical "end times" language in the United States armed forces? When and how should such language be used, if at all? 5. What goals for the war, if any, should be supported by individual Christians? By Christian denominations? How do you rank the importance of achieving economic stability, fighting terrorism, advancing American interests, and other objectives? **Confronting the News With Scripture and Hope**Here are some Bible verses to guide your discussion: **1 Samuel 17:45-47***But David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This very day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head, and I will give the dead bodies of the Philistine army this very day to the birds of the air and to the wild animals of the earth, so that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel and that all this assembly may know that the LORD does not save by sword and spear, for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hand."* (For context, read [1 Samuel 17:26-49](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxFCMNoDo0nIQk1OOuVDrhcSSFolwPEq1oMNSWTj3V9OJaqqPX6hALlZaTNNLC2c3BRAwf_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmRTjiRIrLAs3n64C2mijJMlcP88bZizU02PiKmN-2F1-2BCagzKa1B092jn3vqtLVqG0dHf0yhTT1nyETUHmpFy1RIUaji8XCIWS9uiyikECl8fRt2tmRMzBpj6i0mcchcaPqceGZXjNP-2FXrOr3LgQ4u1W9Sv50a4tcwExeYNmQ-2BXPiPnR-2Bw2XDBH0Q6ow-2Bm5nz7TqmVv55ZlyGnMoObeCZmsPKKmYnN9I6b0JZAb4q30xO64t6tuK03jgTcNMbOcFLk8HaMfzvqA1ob0gGWPJyFhGE-3D).) First Samuel is named after the judge and prophet who anointed Saul and David as the first two kings of Israel. In chapter 17, King Saul had the Israelite army at his disposal, but he seemed powerless in the face of a giant named Goliath and the army of the Philistines. Then young David went to the battlefield, saw the giant, and asked his fellow Israelites, "who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?" (v. 26). David puts his trust not in the skill of the Israelite army, but in the power of the "living God." Goliath stood a towering 9 feet, 6 inches. He had a helmet of bronze, a coat of mail, a shield, a javelin and a spear. David, on the other hand, was a youth who had no helmet, armor or sword. His only weapon was a sling and five stones. He was clearly the underdog, but David convinced Saul that he had vital experience as a shepherd. David said, "The LORD, who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine." So Saul said, "Go, and may the LORD be with you!" (v. 37). Originally, Saul clothed David with his armor and weapons, but David removed them and picked up his sling and five smooth stones. When Goliath saw David, he said, "Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air" (v. 44). David accepted his invitation, running quickly toward the battle line to meet him. David took a stone and slung it hard into Goliath's forehead. Goliath fell to the ground and David cut off his head, using the giant's own sword. David had success because he kept his focus on God. He stood before Goliath and boldly predicted, "This very day the LORD will deliver you into my hand." David surpassed his fellow Israelites in showing confidence that God would exert effort on his behalf. He believed that "the battle is the LORD's, and he will give [Goliath] into our hand." > **Questions:** When, if ever, have you put your faith in the power of God and been delivered from danger? What does it mean that the Lord "does not save by sword and spear"? How does God save us in times of conflict, and make us triumphant in the battles we face? When, if ever, might Christians be called upon to use force in support of their nation, or of others, or of themselves? **Obadiah 12-14***But you should not have gloated over your brother on the day of his misfortune; you should not have rejoiced over the people of Judah on the day of their ruin; you should not have boasted on the day of distress. The book of Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament, just a single chapter in length. In the book, the kingdom of Edom and its northern neighbor Judah are portrayed as brothers, with a sibling rivalry like that of Esau and Jacob in the book of Genesis. The prophecy seems to follow an Edomite assault on Jerusalem, described in Obadiah 10-14. Because Edom showed violence and inhumanity in its attack, God promises to make it "least among the nations" (v. 2). In particular, Edom is criticized for acting as "one of them" (v. 11) -- as one of Judah's enemies -- when Edom should have treated Judah as kin. God’s judgment, according to Obadiah, is tied to three particular failures by Edom. *First: Gloating.* "But you should not have gloated over your brother." *Second: Looting.* "[Y]ou should not have stolen his goods." *Third: Mistreating fugitives and survivors.* "[Y]ou should not have stood at the crossings to cut off his fugitives; you should not have handed over his survivors on the day of distress." Obadiah teaches us that God will judge nations that wage wars in a manner that tolerates gloating, looting and the mistreatment of innocent people. Fighting often brings out the worst in people, but warfare does not require unlimited barbarity. God clearly states that there are limits. Human rights must be protected, according to Obadiah, even in the middle of armed conflict. > **Questions:** Where do you see a danger of gloating in the war in Iran? When is there a temptation to steal goods in a time of conflict? In the current war, where do you see mistreatment of fugitives and survivors? Why does God care about such things, and how can we follow God's guidance when we are engaging in war? **Luke 14:31-33***[Jesus said] Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.* (For context, read [Luke 14:25-33.](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxfk6UGh-2BLvOrc794A1pa6YvmKst16uIhZgYljufr4XKqaGQ8Hi2ScsVAdIVOTznEnJEG7_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmRTjiRIrLAs3n64C2mijJMlcP88bZizU02PiKmN-2F1-2BCagzKa1B092jn3vqtLVqG0dD5xa5pa8Hgdiaga-2F68vSt8fCLB5IWEtVJ-2B8VcYX-2BTlQlkK7Cit-2BQcG9eqErSwtBlW05-2FH492eGmblTgmRzCtZC7eVcm9qDkXfyvRRooslqiYNhn59J8Z2-2BUfP-2FcWxKAe4bkddmxGCVe315IGSWwHxuQX6QqaFaoqahOqDLK-2Btk8-2FCu87RrN-2F7aeBR6Quy7PzpyuBFq9KXT6iXdSDVN3fCo-3D)) In the gospel of Luke, Jesus turns to the large crowds that are following him and teaches them about the cost of discipleship. He tells them to "hate father and mother" (v. 26), so that they will put devotion to the kingdom of God above all else. He urges them to "carry the cross and follow me" (v. 27), with a willingness to suffer for him and his message. Jesus asks them if they would start to build a tower without estimating the cost, giving the clear message that they will be ridiculed if they start to build and cannot finish. Then, Jesus asks if a king would engage in war without first considering whether he has the ability to be victorious. He tells them that a king will send a delegation and ask for "the terms of peace" if he cannot win the war. In similar manner, people cannot be effective disciples of Jesus if they do not count the cost -- in this case, giving up "all [their] possessions." > **Questions:** In the war in Iran, do you feel that the United States has counted the cost of engaging in conflict? What might have been missed, or counted too highly? What kind of sacrifices are you willing to make as a disciple? How does sacrifice lead to success? **Revelation 16:16***And the demonic spirits assembled the kings at the place that in Hebrew is called Harmagedon.* (For context, read [Revelation 16:1-21](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxL76PkgLnT0ZbDRKTq4JIBDePdJuMC2kCJNrkG1AZLb-2FxdySSwzawkDTV0SFXHXT1SdJ9_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmRTjiRIrLAs3n64C2mijJMlcP88bZizU02PiKmN-2F1-2BCagzKa1B092jn3vqtLVqG0dJysIdYoFaIkSMDdHV1YBw6dZKwybRCf6WpA7LM2LGA-2B1PAlhYZ7mTS468AUE4RYThtS3TLACDtO1nfhmX8FUL7vM94cjjWDccMuwyuggIHgacSgAkgOU9TtTtlTn1iPVqlaLmk7xVAAuudty2e0CExdoCIh8o8UCvc-2FQTqGOJ4UZe337xD0BNVlqa2CXCECEB0msIJe-2B2Mpxds7iY-2F8gUs-3D).) Revelation 16 shows that God cares for the suffering and the innocent and is determined to hold oppressors accountable. As the chapter begins, the "seven bowls of the wrath of God" (v. 1) remind us of the ten plagues used against the oppressive Egyptians in Exodus. In Revelation, God's judgment is against those who "shed the blood of saints and prophets" (v. 6). When the Bible speaks of God's wrath, it is almost always directed toward injustice. Revelation says that frog-like demonic spirits will assemble the kings of the earth "for battle on the great day of God the Almighty" (v. 14). This will be a battle at the end of time between the forces of God and the forces of those who do not worship God. Notice, however, that no fighting takes place in Revelation 16:12-15. Although the demonic spirits gather the kings, war does not break out. The hostilities are delayed, perhaps to give people time to repent. This reminds us that Jesus has come not to condemn the world but to save it. The place of this battle is "Harmagedon," sometimes called Armageddon. The name combines a Greek transliteration of the Hebrew word "har," meaning "mountain," and Megiddo, a strategic location between Egypt and Syria. When the seventh bowl is poured out, the "great city" of Rome is split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fall. The punishment of God is directed on big cities because they are places of human wealth, power and pride. God remembers Babylon and gives her "the wine cup of the fury of his wrath" (v. 19). The fury of God's wrath produces a truly chaotic and apocalyptic scene, one that is simultaneously a comfort to the oppressed and a warning to oppressors. > **Questions:** Why is God's wrath directed toward oppression? Where do you see such sinful behavior today? Who determines the timing of the great battle of Armageddon? How is the delay of the battle a sign of God's mercy? Do you take Revelation literally or symbolically, and why? Where do you find comfort in Revelation, and where do you find a warning? **For Further Discussion** 1. TWW Team Member Frank Ramirez says that "some Christians assume that modern-day Israel is the same as biblical Israel." They believe that when Israel goes to war, "God is on their side." What connection do you make, if any, between modern Israel and biblical Israel? Is God always on the side of modern Israel? Why or why not? 2. The school was hit by a Tomahawk cruise missile, a weapon that neither Israel nor Iran possesses. Dozens of Tomahawks have been launched by United States Navy warships since the attack on Iran began. What care needs to be taken to minimize civilian deaths in a time of war? Why does this matter to God? 3. Just War Tradition recognizes criteria that leaders must consider before engaging in war. Tony Perkins argues that Trump's military operation against Iran meets all three criteria. He says, "the president actually demonstrated that [a military assault was a last resort] by pursuing diplomatic means to resolve this issue, even to the frustration of some." How do you respond to the assertion that the war in Iran is a just war? 4. Iran is a country we are bombing, notes TWW Team Member Mary Sells, after we ended an anti-nuclear agreement. For her, this raises questions that can be applied to the sphere of our personal relationships: "When and how do we know to blow up relationships? Is that in the plan for our faith, tearing down some relationships while building up others? What of collateral damage in the process, others who are hurt by our choices?" Discuss. **Responding to the News** Take the insights you have gained into the week to come, as you consider your political position on the war in Iran, as well as your goals for relationships with family members and friends. Put your faith in the power of God, be fair in times of conflict, and remember that God always cares for the suffering and the innocent. **Prayer** God of all nations, we pray for your guidance in times of conflict. Protect all who are in harm's way, keep us mindful of your call to do justice, and steer us toward the end of hostilities. May we trust in your power as we walk in the way of Jesus Christ.

"Energy routes, mineral supply chains, semiconductor inputs and data networks are no longer treated as commercial concerns alone," reports Fox News; "they are now regarded as national security assets." In chapter 17, King Saul had the Israelite army at his disposal, but he seemed powerless in the face of a giant named Goliath and the army of the Philistines. Then young David went to the battlefield, saw the giant, and asked his fellow Israelites, "who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?" (v. 26). He was clearly the underdog, but David convinced Saul that he had vital experience as a shepherd. David said, "The LORD, who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine." So Saul said, "Go, and may the LORD be with you!" Although the demonic spirits gather the kings, war does not break out. The hostilities are delayed, perhaps to give people time to repent. This reminds us that Jesus has come not to condemn the world but to save it.

The place of this battle is "Harmagedon," sometimes called Armageddon.

Questions: Why is God's wrath directed toward oppression?
