Her story is used to examine how these values align with modern parenting psychology and Christian discipleship. The lesson also draws scriptural parallels, emphasizing non-coercive parenting styles that develop internal motivation and spiritual grounding in children. ## 📖 Main Content: Gail Cornwall shares a formative memory where her mother, instead of punishing her for a dangerous mistake, praised her honesty. This gentle response illustrates the embodiment of Quaker values. She uses the SPICES framework to explore how those values shaped her parenting and align with both scripture and psychological research. The Wired Word ties in biblical examples including Jesus' independent thinking, Paul's spiritual family, and Timothy's generational faith inheritance. ### 🗒️ Notes - **Simplicity**: - Prioritize needs over luxuries. - Value presence over possessions. - **Peace**: - Conflict is an opportunity for moral growth. - Develop cooperative problem-solving skills. - **Integrity**: - "Let your life speak" through consistent words and actions. - Children learn through modeled authenticity. - **Community**: - View talents as contributions to the whole. - Emphasize belonging and collaborative truth-seeking. - **Equality**: - Avoid authoritarianism; use guiding queries. - Respect children as full persons with agency. - **Stewardship**: - Teach justice in resource use. - Care for the Earth and one another, resisting materialism. - **Biblical Reflections**: - *Proverbs 22:6*: Teach to each child’s “bent,” not a fixed mold. - *Luke 2:46–51*: Jesus’ autonomy clashed with parental concern—resolved in mutual respect. - *Romans 16:13*: Spiritual mothering is a profound form of care. - *2 Timothy 1:5–14*: Faith can be a multigenerational deposit. ## 📖 References: - “Quaker Parents Were Ahead of Their Time,” The Atlantic - “On Quaker Mothering,” Friends Journal - “Should I Parent Like a Quaker?” Christ Community Chapel (Video) - “SPICES: The Quaker Testimonies,” Friends Journal - Quaker Parenting Initiative: https://quakerparenting.org ## 🗣️ Paraphrase: 1. *Original*: “Because there can be no one best way in Quaker parenting, I’m freed from feeling like every detail of every decision will lead only to perfect success or abject defeat.” *Paraphrased*: Since Quaker parenting doesn’t demand a single correct method, I feel liberated from obsessing over each choice leading to perfection or disaster. 2. *Original*: “Children who feel valued in this way, and who believe that what they do adds value, generally come to understand that they matter.” *Paraphrased*: When kids are treated as if they truly count and see their actions as meaningful, they begin to believe in their own worth. ## 📰 Newsletter: This week’s *Wired Word* dives into the SPICES of Quaker parenting—Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship—and how these values not only shape children but nurture communities. With real-life stories and scripture connections from Proverbs, Luke, and 2 Timothy, it’s a deeply thoughtful exploration of parenting as discipleship. Great for families, mentors, and church leaders alike. Watch [this video from Christ Community Chapel](https://youtu.be/zyWo6T9U2lc) and reflect on how Jesus' interactions with children and disciples inspire modern-day faith formation. ## ✅ Action Items: - Integrate the SPICES framework into my open-source education presentations as a model of value-driven community engagement. - Create contributor onboarding materials that emphasize autonomy, integrity, and community—mirroring Quaker-inspired parenting. - Use this article to inform my parenting approach, especially in moments requiring non-reactive responses. - Add a slide in future DevRel talks on how Quaker methods model conflict transformation—useful in team dynamics. - Draw connections between “continuing revelation” and OSS iteration cycles when advocating for transparency in open governance. ## 🧪 Hypotheses: - Parenting frameworks grounded in religious values result in higher emotional resilience in children. - Value-based parenting aligns closely with OSS values like transparency, contribution, and meritocracy. ### 📊 Methodology: - Use qualitative interviews with faith-based parents practicing SPICES-aligned methods. - Cross-reference emotional development scores with traditional disciplinary methods. - Examine cultural data on parental conflict resolution in collaborative development environments. ### ❓ Questions: - Can spiritual parenting frameworks shape community ethics in OSS? - What happens when children’s “bent” conflicts with community norms? - How can churches scaffold parenting support across different theological views? ### 🔮 Future Research: - Cross-cultural comparisons of spiritually-grounded parenting values. - Long-term developmental outcomes in Quaker-parented children vs. authoritarian models. - Applications of SPICES in educational leadership and open-source community management. ### 💡 Implications: - Better understanding of Quaker-informed parenting could influence conflict resolution methods in both education and OSS. - Helps create safer, more equitable environments for children and contributors alike. - Reinforces the value of agency and autonomy across diverse ecosystems. ### 🧠 Learning Styles Assessment: - **Visual**: Missing—could benefit from SPICES diagram or infographic. - **Auditory**: Includes video link—good start. - **Verbal**: Rich language and biblical references support linguistic learners. - **Physical**: No hands-on application—suggest reflective journaling or parenting simulations. - **Logical**: Reasoned structure around values and cause-effect behaviors supports analytical thinking. - **Social**: Scripture discussion questions foster interpersonal learning. - **Solitary**: Encourages self-reflection via personal parenting memories. - **Naturalistic**: Touched lightly in “Stewardship”—could improve with Earth-focused examples. ### 📊 Accessibility Assessment: - Alt text needs confirmation for embedded media. - Structure is readable, but long paragraphs may overwhelm screen readers. - Good font size assumed but unknown contrast. - No interactivity present—could add audio summaries or transcripts. ### 🌍 DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) Assessment: - Strong emphasis on respect and equality across differences. - Language is mostly inclusive, though “mothering” is gender-specific. - Neurodiverse-friendly in concept, but presentation could improve with clearer formatting. - Cultural parallels appreciated (e.g., Korean doljanchi)—more could be added. ### ✅ Logical validity: - **Strengths**: - Clear causal reasoning: modeling values yields behavior internalization. - Strong inductive reasoning: Cornwall’s story connected to SPICES and to research. - Summary: On Mother's Day, it seemed fitting that we explore the topic of parenting. We were drawn to a recent article on the subject by a woman who was raised in a Quaker tradition. Dear Class Members On Mother's Day, it seemed fitting that we explore the topic of parenting. We were drawn to a recent article on the subject by a woman who was raised in a Quaker tradition. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, other relative, friend, teacher or mentor of a child or young disciple of Christ, the principles she outlines in the piece will be useful to you. ![](https://www.thewiredword.com/_img/tww_logo_email.jpg) **Quaker-style Parenting for Our Time*****The Wired Word*** **for the Week of May 11, 2025** **In the News** Last month, Gail Cornwall, a journalist who covers parenting and education, reflected on the way her mother, a member of The Religious Society of Friends (aka Quakers), handled a serious mistake Gail made when she was a tween. Gail popped a frozen can of soda in the microwave and nearly set the house on fire. After putting out the flames, her mom inquired about what had happened. Expecting severe rebuke and punishment, Gail confessed her mistake, and her mother praised her for her honesty and for accepting responsibility. Now a parent herself, Cornwall reflected on how her mother's Quaker principles infused her approach to raising children and dovetailed with what some contemporary researchers advocate to be child-rearing best practices. Cornwall identifies six values that guide Quaker life in general and parenting in particular, using the acronym, SPICES, which stands for Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality and Stewardship. Simplicity involves focusing on what is really important, valuing what is unseen over what is material, understanding the difference between needs and luxuries, and doing what you can to minimize distractions from what is essential. "Perhaps Quakers were the first minimalists of our time with their ability to live contentedly with less and having it all mean more," wrote Joylyn Williamson for [*Friends LifeCare*](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPBfUjH3BLlKJCo-2BElCz04T5YQw1Clwsw-2FWt8eAyl1vVk4mt-2BCNXYlfzMpfIrI08TrOKroXrEYkODTLWROi4SkGK52WEKl4r7NDjRgVJECk8ZDXfy_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmdWsexrzlD2fV2-2BkgAZIBcl-2BJOX8UETWmtvxCDbsBDceRMR25A9QYB-2FWAhfX7ZHNvXxUBH8i3kAm6Gxn5ycdKr0JW-2FDwHJWP-2FamNoL7o-2BjC3JD4kkchDpJnQvU3ZCC6R2bSlG2wS30X3-2FlVXlr8cbuLRKd59s1P02nA6zw-2FAJfj6oRPUNxf6dO5BZBo8BhjFooN8b8II35KfbRz-2Fd5895XV596qlnuU6IVEr6ijShY7TfUf73UWkT0-2ByxO81Pom5zjMZuAI-2FRVTLJgRmEdCosYY-3D). The value of peace is affirmed by seeking justice and healing for all people; building conflict resolution, creative and cooperative problem-solving and communication skills, so that conflict becomes a catalyst for moral growth, empowerment and learning to take responsibility for finding alternatives to violence. Integrity involves honesty, authenticity and the harmonization of your actions and words with your principles. The value of integrity fits the Quaker emphasis on "letting your life speak." As parents live their values, they model for their children beliefs and practices they desire to see develop in their offspring. Cornwall says that the Quaker value of community can be seen in the emphasis on "spiritual gifts" or "individual talents as assets that belong to the community. For parents, this means focusing on what our children choose to do, are good at, and enjoy." The community is meant to be a safe place where all members can blossom as individuals, and use their unique qualities for the benefit of all. In community Quakers believe they can discover truth and live more fully than they can in isolation from one another. Quakers express the value of equality by using "advices and queries" rather than rules imposed by authority figures to prompt individuals to make carefully considered choices. Parents who encourage children to ask questions and draw their own conclusions help them to develop internal motivation for good behavior that will be essential when positive external influences are absent. In the belief "that children are not lesser proto adults, but fellow beings worthy of respect and agency regardless of their behavior" because "there is 'that of God' in every person," Quakers embrace equality as a high value. "Children who feel valued in this way, and who believe that what they do adds value, generally come to understand that they matter," Cornwall explains. Quakers also teach their children the value of equality by calling for respect for all people, whatever their race, religion, culture, age, gender or ideology. The final value Cornwall lifts up is stewardship, which means the protection and care for the Earth as a sacred trust, avoiding both materialism and wastefulness, while sharing resources justly with one another, so that each has access to what they need. Consider how Jesus guided his disciples, whom he sometimes called "children," (asking questions rather than demanding cookie-cutter or carbon-copy versions of his theology, for example). How might his methods apply to the way we nurture people in our own social circle? **The Big Questions** 1. As you reflect on your parenting experiences, or on your experiences in childhood, what approach to a parenting situation was especially memorable, either because it was fulfilling, or not particularly helpful? 2. When have you ever been at a loss as to how to deal with a child-rearing situation? How, if at all, did your faith or your community of faith assist you with that dilemma? 3. The Bible has so much to say on how to be a good child, or parent. How do you use the Bible in your own approach to parenting? In the way you instruct your children? 4. What values, knowledge and skills will children need to live in the world of tomorrow? 5. What is a parent's role in nurturing children so they can lead meaningful and satisfying lives? **Confronting the News With Scripture and Hope**Here are some Bible verses to guide your discussion: **Proverbs 22:6***Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray.* (No context needed.) People who grew up with the King James Version of the Bible would have heard this verse rendered: "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Some interpret this to mean that there is one correct path for children, and if parents direct children to follow that path, they will faithfully keep to it for the rest of their life. Parents would all like to ensure that their children will succeed in life, and this proverb seems to give that assurance. But other versions provide nuance that might suggest alternate ways to understand this verse. The New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition says "Train children in the right way." The Message translates it: "Point your kids in the right direction -- when they're old they won't be lost." And The Voice puts it this way: "Teach a child how to follow the right way; even when he is old, he will stay on course." Here are other versions of the first part of the proverb: ● Train up a child in the way he should go [teaching him to seek God's wisdom and will for his abilities and talents] ... (Amplified Bible) ● Train up a child in the way he should go [and in keeping with his individual gift or bent] ... (Amplified Bible, Classic Edition) ● Teach children in a way that fits their needs ... (Easy-to-Read Version) ● Train a child in the way appropriate for him ... (International Standard Version) ● Train up a child according to his way ... (Legacy Standard Bible) ● Train the child *concerning his way* ... (Lexham English Bible) ● Teach a child to choose the right path ... (Living Bible) ● Train children to live the right way ... (New Century Version) ● Direct your children onto the right path ... (New Living Translation) The Quaker understanding of this verse might fit more into the Amplified Bible, Classic Edition translation. In that version, the use of the word "bent" calls to mind an arborist who trains and prunes the branches of a tree according to the way they seem inclined to go, in a way that feels natural or true to the nature of the tree. In [his video analysis of Cornwall's article](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPPXTV2R-2Bm0Kz58iOCQYIq1-2FvB3kEehcsiLkIMSOmz-2BWi3UIszyIbMPTSBpVTeKuyKw-3D-3DdxKC_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmdWsexrzlD2fV2-2BkgAZIBcl-2BJOX8UETWmtvxCDbsBDceRMR25A9QYB-2FWAhfX7ZHNvVEXVNVrt9lJkkK47MazzAFXf49wGFhsyfevp0HSeitUd26Xh10sPexY7OQBdDrH670q2Bfy-2B-2BzPeUto0d9AHOr7Ego3hMORltEJt99OJhGf7BRHXpM8SZz1ED-2BqyNj3LVqPcx78H-2BFO1g5CoFo8crH-2FqfWK5h61QxcjRXahrkrvd-2F2i3UhhE765iBIWnxSAZ0hO-2FYsBwCSYR8LJz-2FPBxuc-3D), Pastor Zach Weihrauch said, "One of the chief jobs of parents is to raise kids who are autonomous, who can stand on their own, which means it's more important to draw out a child's thinking than it is necessarily to make sure they're doing it the way you want them to do it through your commands." "Because there can be no one best way in Quaker parenting, I'm freed from feeling like every detail of every decision will lead only to perfect success or abject defeat," Cornwall wrote. That idea is based on the Quaker embrace of what she called "continuing revelation," which means that there is always more to learn in the adventure called parenting, which doesn't come with an instruction manual. Most parents simply dive in and do the best they can with the knowledge and experience they have gained up to that point. > **Questions:** How would you interpret this verse? Does it mean that your training techniques need to be right, or that you need to guide children into the right path for them? And is there only one right way to parent? Or only one right path for children? **Luke 2:46, 48-51***After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. ... When his parents saw him they were astonished, and his mother said to him, "Child, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously looking for you." He said to them, "Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them, and his mother treasured all these things in her heart.* (For context, read [Luke 2:41-52](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzx1qTBBln-2FabkjZMF09ic0uitD44YXDeAmgGSeCLxTEnpjRMPPFRzEXjUzNmcTbelN8DUb_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmdWsexrzlD2fV2-2BkgAZIBcl-2BJOX8UETWmtvxCDbsBDceRMR25A9QYB-2FWAhfX7ZHNvelaY5gurHn9aR2blN19MeFSyAtD6u4XUaxoJqnuAptYqisaCaMXxNSk-2Faei69kEDwMdIR9nHpoy8WqHulT7STV4xUxNnhCEv1yTjCf-2BL8Hml8ou6un-2BT-2B4d5-2BJUZoBImQBT75eKZPwUz3v8pN9Z695ekNgwZ0edho-2BsuQOaGqAlIkBN0qhNaUHKCoqGtUN4-2FOqxPdfYVnrC6N370IG-2B0lY-3D).) Mary and Joseph certainly had their work cut out for them, trying to parent 12-year-old Jesus, who had his own ideas about how to live his life. Perhaps they remembered that Judah was not the safest place for them, since they had been forced to flee for their lives from King Herod, who sought to end their child's life when he was just a toddler. Like most parents, they wanted to protect their son. But Jesus was leaning into his destiny, eager to understand what role he was to play in God's kingdom. Like every fledgling adolescent, he was trying his wings. In time, he would leave his parents' nest for good, but in the meantime, he returned to Nazareth with his parents "and was obedient to them." Nearly two decades later, as Jesus launched his public ministry, his mother came to Jesus with a problem at a wedding. The hosts had run out of wine, a serious social *faux pas* in that culture. But she didn't make demands of her son. She simply informed him of the situation, leaving it up to him to decide how to respond. Then she told the servants to do whatever he told them to do. Here Paul refers to Timothy as his "beloved child," whom he remembered constantly in his prayers night and day (vv. 2-3). Paul mentored Timothy to become an effective pastor, building on the faith Timothy's grandmother Lois had passed on to her daughter Eunice, who had passed it on to her son. Which of our beliefs and spiritual practices are most relevant to parenting? 2. React to this, from author Bock Cherice: "It's a struggle not to force my own opinions on [my sons], and instead, to trust the Spirit to mold them into the people they are called to be. It's a struggle, too, to know the things to take a stand about, which things don't matter, and which ones should be their choice instead of mine. ... I also want to teach my kids other Quaker values and beliefs but leave room for them to choose their own path. ... I want to encourage my sons to think for themselves and not obey blindly -- at least not obey anyone else blindly! But I often catch myself wanting them to obey me blindly, because I know what's best for them! At least, that's what I convince myself." 3. List five qualities you want your adult children to have. Focus on the big picture, on the kind of people you hope your children are becoming, not on what they may acquire or achieve or the career they may have. How are you embodying those qualities as you parent your children? How will you nurture and protect these qualities in your children, in yourself? 4. The child is encouraged to pick one. Whichever item the infant touches first supposedly indicates what the future holds in store for him or her. Objects on the table and the career or kind of future they represent may include coins (wealth), books (intelligence), white yarn (long life), rice (abundant food to eat), a microphone (entertainer), knife and cutting board (chef), a ball (athletics), a stuffed animal (veterinarian), stethoscope (physician), gavel (judge), computer mouse (working in tech), passport (diplomat), hammer (architect), pen and ink (writer), brush (artist), bow and arrow or sword (martial arts or bravery), spool of thread (household skills or fashion), etc.. Parents, friends and relatives may try to coax children to choose particular objects, but they sometimes seem to have minds of their own. Compare this cultural practice with the Quaker ideas found in the news article above. If you were to observe your own child's first birthday with a similar celebration, what might you have on the table, and which object might you hope your baby would select? **Responding to the News** Brainstorm ways your church can best support parents as they seek to rear children in the ways of the Lord. **Prayer** O God, who lives in eternal loving relationship as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we thank you that you created us to enjoy fellowship with you and connection with other inhabitants of Earth. We thank you for those who parented and guided us, and pray that you would give grace, wisdom and joy to all those who have been given the privilege and responsibility of caring for children, that they may grow to know and love you and experience your constant presence in every season of life. The New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition says "Train children in the right way." The Message translates it: "Point your kids in the right direction -- when they're old they won't be lost." And The Voice puts it this way: "Teach a child how to follow the right way; even when he is old, he will stay on course."

Here are other versions of the first part of the proverb:

● Train up a child in the way he should go [teaching him to seek God's wisdom and will for his abilities and talents] ...
