Dear Class Members,
The brutal killing of two members of the Israeli embassy staff outside an event at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., has shocked the world. In response to this act of terrorism, this installment of *The Wired Word* will focus on antisemitism, violence and the bonds that unite us as children of Abraham.

**Two Jewish Young Adults Murdered in Washington, D.C.*****The Wired Word*** **for the Week of June 1, 2025**
**In the News**
Two members of the Israeli embassy staff were shot to death outside an event at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, May 21. The Jewish young adults, about to get engaged, were gunned down in what the FBI believes may be a targeted attack.
Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and his girlfriend Sarah Milgrim, 26, were described by family and friends as lovely people who yearned for peace. "Yaron was the kind of guy that would have conversations with anybody about anything," said a friend, Mariam Wahba, to *ABC News*. "I will forever think of him as a diplomat ... and a peacemaker at heart."
Another friend, Jennifer Mizrahi, said, "Sarah was so empathetic and talking about the people in Israel who were suffering, the Palestinians in Israel [who] are suffering. She was an incredible person, and she will be really missed.
The event at the Capital Jewish Museum was focused on humanitarian aid. After the shooting, Sarah Milgram's father told *The Kansas City Star* that the event "was about getting more supplies into Gaza." Even as a kid, he said, Sarah was a vegetarian who "took in strays, and didn't want to step on a bug. She respected all forms of life, and worked in animal rescue."
Amanda Birger, Sarah's roommate at the University of Kansas, said that Sarah "was the ultimate peacemaker in her personal life and her professional life, and her whole career was devoted to promoting peace in Israel." Very serious about her Jewish faith, Sarah organized delegations to Jerusalem in her work for the embassy, which began right after Hamas attacked Israel. Before that, she had worked for an organization that brought Palestinians and Jews together.
According to officials, Yaron Lischinsky was planning to propose to Sarah Milgrim during the last week in May. "The young man purchased a ring," said Yechiel Leiter, Israeli Ambassador to the United States, at a press conference, "with the intention of proposing [in] Jerusalem."
TWW Team Member Henry Brinton received a message from a colleague, a rabbi in Northern Virginia named David Kalender, about his community's struggle. "I, our congregation, the DC Jewish community, American and world Jewry ... we're shaken to the core with fear, sadness, frustration, anger, despair and exhaustion. It's impossible to focus," he said. "We are in mourning for Sarah and Yaron -- these precious souls working for peace, attending an event of like-minded young people, were executed with 21 bullets on the streets of America for the sin of being Jewish in America."
The suspect in the shooting, Elias Rodriguez, 31, is being described as a terrorist fueled by hate and antisemitism. The day after the shooting, he was charged with the murder of foreign officials, causing the death of a person through the use of a firearm, discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence and two counts of first-degree murder.
"Antisemitism will not be tolerated," said Jeanine Pirro, interim United States attorney for the District of Columbia, "especially in the nation's capital. We're going to continue to investigate this as a hate crime and a crime of terrorism." Members of the Congressional Jewish Caucus spoke to reporters on Thursday, May 22, saying the "terror and antisemitic hate against the Jewish community must end." Said Florida Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schulz, "As. a Jewish mother of young Jewish professionals, my first thought was, 'That could easily have been one of my kids or one of my staff.'"
Rodriguez flew from Chicago to the Washington, D.C., area with a 9 mm handgun in his checked luggage. He then bought a ticket to an event at the D.C. Capital Jewish Museum, his alleged target location. There, he targeted Lischinsky and Milgrim as they left a celebration of Jewish heritage and shot them multiple times. At least 21 shell casings were discovered at the scene.
According to *NPR*, Rodriguez allegedly told officers, "I did it for Palestine, I did it for Gaza," at the scene of the attack. He also allegedly chanted "free Palestine" after being detained by security. Rodriguez was seen holding a red scarf, which one witness identified as a keffiyeh, a traditional headscarf associated with Palestinian history and resistance.
Many U.S. and Israeli officials have identified the attacks as the latest in a rise of antisemitic incidents in recent years. The American Jewish Committee (AJC) and 40 other groups issued a joint statement calling for the federal government to ramp up security measures in response to the "rising level of anti-Jewish incitement."
Recent deadly antisemitic incidents have included the "Unite the Right" riot in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017; the Tree of Life synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 2018; and the Chabad of Poway synagogue shooting in Poway, California, in 2019. In addition, 3.5 million Jews in the United States experienced antisemitism in the year following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, according to a study by the Combat Antisemitism Movement.

**Applying the News Story**
In response to news of the killing of these two young Jews, discuss the recent rise in antisemitic violence. Talk about the challenge of peacemaking and the steps that you can take to forge deeper connections with members of the three Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
**The Big Questions**
1. Where do you see signs of antisemitism in your community? What can you do about it? When, if ever, have you discussed the problem with a Jewish friend or neighbor?
2. When have you encountered hatred toward a member of another religion? How did you respond, if at all? In your opinion, what causes hatred to be expressed in violence? How can such violence be curtailed?
3. After the D.C. killings, a rabbi spoke of "the sin of being Jewish in America." Why do some people see being Jewish as a "sin"? What can the church do to counter such a perception in certain segments of society?
4. Adherents of Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all children of Abraham. Where do you see family resemblances between the three groups? Where do you see differences? What can be done to improve interfaith relations? What is important about the legacy of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, who were working for peace? Be specific.
5. The D.C. shooter reportedly said, "I did it for Palestine, I did it for Gaza," at the scene of the attack. How was the cause of the Palestinians and/or Gazans helped or hurt by this attack? What would be a better approach for those who have sympathy for the people of Palestine and/or Gaza?
**Confronting the News With Scripture and Hope**Here are some Bible verses to guide your discussion:
**Genesis 17:1-2***When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. And I will make my covenant between me and you and will make you exceedingly numerous."* (For context, read [Genesis 17:1-8](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxdxvwvUIbrGNsYJ-2B9LkHJNdGGqArmu6MCPxoXcHtIo-2BYYMeFebtz3HgdlIQ02eFvPRGZd_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmQADErbVaqJaFyEsomp-2Bn3lV-2FnE3cvonm4da5gf-2B3-2B204ZbV4Y4oCJ6kC27ykoZj6sL19ZQcQ8vOoP0ZiQKrDf5-2BnhlcTK-2BphMyHK74uNXMGvzRBE7TTrg8qVi8CRtlr8Dy7G3LTxpJ6sywMWEJdcGefP7gjgxm3WuACoI3qc9TIQjBSVrK5OuX2O7dJQ1yS1nVvHPhz-2FvUprYlWTRsf2Y00l29Noo4RTljY4YyN4oLkWzwpFpioyQyGpAUsFSbfWzVix-2FM342SNjIozIX9Cxbo-3D).)
The first book in the Bible is all about beginnings. *Bereshit* is the first Hebrew word in the book, translated into English as "in the beginning," which gives the book its name in the Jewish tradition. When the Hebrew Bible was translated into Greek, the book was called *Genesis*, which means "origin," a name which continues to be used in our English Bibles. Genesis is the origin story for the entire spiritual adventure that follows.
The origin of the three Abrahamic religions -- Judaism, Christianity and Islam -- is found in the covenant between God and Abraham. The Lord appears to Abram, identifies himself, and then challenges Abram to "walk before me, and be blameless." God chooses to make a covenant with Abram -- a promise-based relationship. "As for me," says the Lord, "this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations" (vv. 4-5). The name Abraham means "ancestor of a multitude."
> **Questions:** What love and respect do we owe our brothers and sisters in the three Abrahamic religions? What does it mean to you to walk before God and be blameless? Where do you see this being done today, and where is it not being practiced?

Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible, the end of the section called The Pentateuch, which simply means "five books." The Pentateuch is often called the "Five Books of Moses" or the *Torah*, a Hebrew word that means "instructions." With the wandering in the wilderness now over, these laws were delivered in the land of Moab. Deuteronomy is a Greek word meaning "second law," and it contains the set of laws which the Israelites received as they prepared to cross the Jordan River into the Promised Land.
Chapter 5 begins with Moses giving the people of Israel the Ten Commandments, which had first been delivered in the book of Exodus. Moses wants the people to receive them as though they were original participants in the covenant at Mount Horeb. "Not with our ancestors did the LORD make this covenant but with us," says Moses, "who are all of us here alive today" (v. 3). This is a reminder that the Ten Commandments are applicable to every generation -- past, present and future -- including the commandment, "You shall not murder" (or kill). The ethical principles of the Ten Commandments have had an enormous impact on Jewish and Christian moral thinking, as well as on the history of civilization.
> **Questions:** Why is murder included in the Ten Commandments, while many other prohibitions are not on the list? What happens to a society when killing is tolerated? What actions can individuals and communities take to constrain violence, including murder?

The gospel according to Matthew is concerned with placing Jesus in the story of God's saving work, which began in Genesis and continued through the Hebrew Scriptures. The book begins with an "account of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham" (1:1), and ends with a story of the resurrected Jesus telling the disciples to teach people to obey everything that he has commanded them (28:20). For Matthew, Jesus is a kind of a second Moses, giving new laws and teachings to the world.
The heart of the teachings of Jesus is found in the Sermon on the Mount, which begins with nine Beatitudes, including, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." Jesus later describes the work of peacemaking with words such as "be reconciled to your brother or sister" (5:24) and "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (5:44).
> **Questions:** What impresses you about the peacemaking work of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim? How can you do similar work of reconciliation in your family and community? Why is it important in our world today?

The apostle Paul's letters are likely among the oldest Christian documents in the Bible, and all of them probably predate the gospels. They are arranged from longest to shortest, Romans to Philemon, and are letters written to churches and individuals addressing a variety of theological and personal issues.
In chapter 12 of his letter to the Romans, Paul emphasises the importance of living in harmony with others, especially those who are hostile. Echoing the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, he says, "Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them" (v. 14). Instead of answering violence with violence, he advises, "Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all" (v. 17). In a reference to Deuteronomy 32:35, he reminds them not to avenge themselves, but to remember the words of God, "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord." He then encourages them by saying, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (v. 21).
> **Questions:** What are the problems associated with answering violence with violence, and seeking vengeance? Why is vengeance better left to God? When, if ever, have you seen evil being overcome with good?

Moses wants the people to receive them as though they were original participants in the covenant at Mount Horeb. "Not with our ancestors did the LORD make this covenant but with us," says Moses, "who are all of us here alive today" (v. 3). This is a reminder that the Ten Commandments are applicable to every generation -- past, present and future -- including the commandment, "You shall not murder" (or kill). The ethical principles of the Ten Commandments have had an enormous impact on Jewish and Christian moral thinking, as well as on the history of civilization.
