## 📝 Summary:
This article honors Bill Moyers, the late journalist and former White House press secretary, reflecting on his role as a storyteller devoted to truth and faith. It explores his career, contributions to media integrity, and his efforts to elevate voices often unheard. The piece connects Moyers’ storytelling legacy to broader spiritual themes about the power of narrative in shaping faith and community, prompting readers to consider who tells the stories and how that impacts our understanding of justice, truth, and hope.
## 📖 Main Content:
Bill Moyers lived a life dedicated to seeking and telling the truth. His work traversed media, politics, and spirituality—highlighting the importance of honest storytelling in service of democracy and faith. From his early government service under Kennedy and Johnson to his decades producing documentaries and interviews, Moyers emphasized media's role as a moral compass.
Despite his critics, Moyers grappled openly with the tension between loyalty and conscience. He moved from political service to journalism, where he challenged commercial pressures that diluted truth-telling. His reflections on America’s struggles with propaganda, lies, and polarization remain deeply relevant.
The article draws spiritual lessons from biblical stories about storytelling’s power to shape identity and justice, such as Moses’ charge to remember the Passover and King Solomon’s wise judgment by listening carefully. It also considers Jesus’ insistence that healing and faith require being known and telling one’s story openly.
Finally, the piece invites readers to reflect on their own role in telling stories—especially the gospel’s—recognizing that how stories are told shapes the reality and hope communities live into.

## 🗣️ Paraphrase:
**Original:**
"In a 2019 interview with CNN, Moyers said that 'for the first time in my long life,' he feared for America. 'A society, a democracy can die of too many lies. And we're getting close to that terminal moment unless we reverse the obsession with lies that are being fed around the country.'"
**Paraphrased:**
During a 2019 CNN interview, Moyers expressed an unprecedented fear for the future of America. He warned that a democracy can perish under the weight of excessive falsehoods and cautioned that without a collective effort to reject pervasive lies, the nation may soon reach a critical breaking point.
**Original:**
"Jesus then explained the meaning of what they had experienced, through the lens of the Scriptures, reigniting a fire of hope in their hearts that the empire and death itself did not have the last word. In fact, the living Christ himself was God's last word on that topic!"
**Paraphrased:**
Jesus interpreted their recent experiences using Scripture, rekindling hope within them. He assured them that neither worldly powers nor death would ultimately prevail because the living Christ represents God's final and victorious statement on these matters.

The recent death of journalist Bill Moyers provides us with the opportunity to consider our need to listen to God's story and the stories of others, and discuss how we can be truthful in the stories we tell in the service of God's reign. Since Moyers wrote the book *Listening to America*, this installment seems fitting for the conclusion of the Independence Day weekend.

**Press Secretary Turned Journalist Bill Moyers Dead at 91*****The Wired Word*** **for the Week of July 6, 2025**
**In the News**
On June 26, 2025, journalist Bill Moyers died in a Manhattan hospital from complications related to prostate cancer. He was 91. On news of his death, former *CNN* president Tom Johnson noted that many compared Moyers to legendary *CBS* newsman Edward R. Murrow. Broadcaster Walter Cronkite once described Moyers as "the conscience" of America. Over his decades-long career, Moyers received multiple Emmys, Peabodys and other awards for his contributions to journalistic integrity and investigative reporting.
Ordained a Baptist pastor, his time in the pulpit was brief, after he decided his call to the ministry "was a wrong number." His curiosity about people and flair for storytelling drew him toward media and public service in government. Moyers was a key architect in the creation of the Peace Corps during the administration of President John F. Kennedy. When Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in after the Kennedy assassination, Moyers served the president in various roles, including as White House press secretary. He was influential in moving forward Johnson's health care, conservation, education, "war on poverty" and civil and voting rights agenda.
Moyers had his critics for carrying out some of the president's controversial orders negatively impacting LGBTQ persons, political opponents and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. After resigning from his position at the White House, in part over disagreements regarding Vietnam, Moyers said of Johnson: "I work for him despite his faults and he lets me work for him despite my deficiencies."
Next, Moyers assumed leadership of the struggling daily *Newsday*, increasing circulation and moving the publication in a more progressive direction, to the dismay of the conservative owner of the paper. The conflict led to Moyers' resignation, after which he traveled through the states to hear the stories of everyday Americans. He published reflections on that sojourn in the book, [*Listening to America: A Traveler Rediscovers His Country*](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPGRAfabCXRFNA5kzk67Eh1on62-2BTD8IWHvJGd0IEqbq1Uwh-2BA3J3NUKzMfUUFUg7X4hIeoQgPWgOnZtb6H9YIRrRO-2FobQ0YVdi-2FANfbuIHz6fjb8_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmVj7pv75D-2FWEWa36mnCxDHl1IWQYCEtETXBpQq6gmZqG9QTBgNSubSeOLvBiMYamnBJfG52N6rSOcFg7RT8DsHYa4-2BgEm-2BAl65JOrHNFtA9Lp-2FlAB-2FHjOfEvu-2FsnbnW-2FrOdwDFzLj9HcObMnVUWTWwEDMP4EtxwD7BvqGI4Rqvv62l81jwpNR-2FJXf9ZnPbOGoiWjLDZk3ztdHnSdJJ7ChfaV-2BT5pPOv-2BEvXAtvyhJyaLyZJ5i5a35mq9D4VbDWzJPtw2W3GoPptjZMiM-2BnomPrE-3D).
Moyers worked in various capacities for *CBS News*, *NBC News* and *MSNBC*, but produced most of his documentaries, interviews and programs in cooperation with *Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)*, which he had had a major role in creating. About commercial television he once said, "You do not get rewarded for telling the hard truths about America in a profit-seeking environment."
He profiled newsmakers and covered religion and morality, culture and the arts, history, politics, the media, health, the environment, the economy, education, violence, immigration, corruption, poverty, racial justice, voting rights, income inequality, democracy and other topics.
In 2004, Moyers expressed concern that the press was either concerned with promoting an ideology or with the profit margin, and "Therefore, we don't have a vigilant, independent press whose interest is the American people."
In a 2019 interview with *CNN*, Moyers said that "for the first time in my long life," he feared for America. "I was born in the Depression, lived through World War II, have been a part of politics and government for all these years," he said, before observing that "a society, a democracy can die of too many lies. And we're getting close to that terminal moment unless we reverse the obsession with lies that are being fed around the country."
"Do facts matter anymore?" Moyers asked. "I think they do."

Park described his encounter with a patient with amnesia, who was given the name "Bravo Doe." Bravo asked,
"If I forgot everything, did I really live?" and "Will you remember me? It's okay if you don't. In a hundred years, none of us will. What do you think will become of us? Who will remember us? Who will tell our stories?"
Park replied, "I'd like to think God is real and God does that sort of thing."
Bravo answered, "I think if God is really God, then God remembers us. Every one of us. Memory is God's love. That's a sort of love that we can't do."
Moyers' life work was in large part the work of storytelling. Consider who tells God's story, and how the narrator affects the way the story is told.
**The Big Questions**
1. What is the essence of Jesus' message? What biblical text(s) encapsulates that message?
2. Why does the message about Jesus seem to vary widely, depending on which preacher or podcaster is speaking or which writer is writing?
3. What is the difference between news, opinion and propaganda? How can Christians ensure that we are proclaiming good news rather than unsupported opinion or propaganda?
4. Who gets to tell the story of our lives? Why does it matter?
5. What motivates you to tell the story of the gospel?
**Confronting the News With Scripture and Hope**Here are some Bible verses to guide your discussion:
**Exodus 12:26-27***[Moses said to the Hebrews,] "And when your children ask you, 'What does this observance mean to you? you shall say, 'It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, for he passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when he struck down the Egyptians but spared our houses'" And the people bowed down and worshiped.* (For context, read [Exodus 12:21-28](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxTZnIxspyl-2FH5UeJwRbVY5zlOuhO9lB3GcQzLnD74JRqH3xuLtwO-2F4zFxUf0wuBkvy0gX_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmVj7pv75D-2FWEWa36mnCxDHl1IWQYCEtETXBpQq6gmZqG9QTBgNSubSeOLvBiMYamnNqNXQnybe1CyBX4XG3Obqq8gbRiQEp3bNPefz4dEngC68Ao5R5DmIpyLrij1pHb2kwTfejjwY-2Bf1ldI8JpMTX6gqMgMqRyP9Gv8w1rJpDG9CGMjnwyNqabfF-2FBPX4SI5-2FjX2aqy75K9v8NULgQm32eaQ4gauEqg8GxX2bNwdGRb9hrrCOGGniT2jqO3EPeCOzS8i9OBENJ2KF3u0ICuqlE-3D).)
As the Hebrews prepared for their departure from slavery in Egypt, Moses instructed them to eat the Passover lamb. They were to keep up the practice in perpetuity, even when they arrived in the land God had promised their ancestors, retelling the story of their deliverance from generation to generation, so that they would never forget how God had been merciful to them.
When we celebrate Communion, we retell the story of how God has shown mercy to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ.
> **Questions:** Why is it necessary for us to reflect on the way God has worked in our collective history and personal lives? What happens if we neglect to do so?
**1 Kings 3:26-28***But the woman whose son was alive said to the king, because compassion for her son burned within her, "Please, my lord, give her the living boy; certainly do not kill him!" The other said, "It shall be neither mine nor yours; divide it." Then the king responded, "Give her the living boy; do not kill him. She is his mother." All Israel heard of the judgment that the king had rendered, and they stood in awe of the king because they perceived that the wisdom of God was in him to execute justice.* (For context, read [1 Kings 3:16-28](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxfg8cQo5t8kKCb0xyK-2Be5CvsEFxFT-2Bjx2elOBab7jUZ8u3-2BCDf-2FFxG1Vb7EdPZSMzg7rV_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmVj7pv75D-2FWEWa36mnCxDHl1IWQYCEtETXBpQq6gmZqG9QTBgNSubSeOLvBiMYamnNeK0h13kH7Vtt-2BQOGmXGcJ4mwTiO8BDwsVt3uIkz0pX1NxlItlzac2l6LUieMO-2FesLFMERgUI6wDct6VQ4DEMMB8X2F9-2BSdvfPPeBibCnRLMTRPPHnU7qcNiKY2BYZQPLgNVTH7SLCpqVJGdYDs9JUtPgL33qH88NsWouoXijIiICT36mv55gdevupywAyt-2FyJTUsD-2BiGokK6PMlS6Bni0-3D).)
Two prostitutes who had each given birth to a son came before King Solomon, seeking redress after one of the infants died in the middle of the night. Each woman claimed that the dead child belonged to the other mother, and that the boy who was alive was hers. The king listened to both women, and declared that the living boy should be divided in half, since he couldn't tell which woman was telling the truth. Then each woman showed her true colors, helping the king discern who was really the mother.
> **Questions:** What role did careful listening play in the king's judgment? What can we learn from this incident that may be useful in our own decision-making?
**Mark 5:30-34***Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, "Who touched my cloak?" And his disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, 'Who touched me?'" He looked all around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease."* (For context, read [Mark 5:25-34](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxTV7ePd0eM3-2Bj6Mu7KoctPzJv94AUMqAXDTGxCJgQ3tYrX65IzMo6ZI7efGjSQTxKl6dQ_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmVj7pv75D-2FWEWa36mnCxDHl1IWQYCEtETXBpQq6gmZqG9QTBgNSubSeOLvBiMYamnC-2BbuEl4IKH-2B2PCNSo7JXPoK9WnFjw1VK5HjIq4Od8vy2PerEvRIlgAhcWiXqcnR23UxYsdZaPcHL4d7-2FHDi0jH8rXq-2BXA2qhEv0qSrYfCKPl7zKgM4B1hMLGltIoRPy-2FQA6OAawqaGkRwQEHiILd-2FfpFsefvH6zksO0xkIhKdoF4HKOrSt2M6E-2BrP0BlUfhHj1VGJl8m2KzsupMJ4lRAMQ-3D).)
In this incident, a woman who had been forced into isolation for 12 years because of the nature of her illness, surreptitiously approached Jesus from behind, thinking if she could just touch his cloak, she might be made well. Somehow, she had heard about Jesus (v. 27) and decided, what could it hurt to try one more time to find a cure for her malady? As soon as she touched his cloak, she was healed (v. 29).
> **Questions:** Why didn't Jesus allow the woman to remain hidden ([Luke 8:47](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxhwAAUpEvI0FecpjADrMJuQ6OYfo9-2BPVeqYiy-2BDtfvbFz9uT0OQeL2BBmu-2FSlNvFgKk65_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmVj7pv75D-2FWEWa36mnCxDHl1IWQYCEtETXBpQq6gmZqG9QTBgNSubSeOLvBiMYamnBSVyvtV6wZAB5m9KhbeDnNKo0cHXwQ-2BYCuYW7fC7Oq6c6FOqNcHt3KBwPGGdqroed5Wb2ykB2Q4bc-2B1IW5E8NWJW00BPMfRKy29nvQZrn1xPWlnJgR8uJKG3NUT7Px62czKhm5f4qlmUmGkzTHEzz9pqWMQJ2KNzyx38Is-2FKbuipJyftIKZ-2FFUTL-2F4jt-2B9mlOYI83w-2B0HRyHubklGQLkZ8-3D)), but instead pressed her to come forward to tell her story? How might being given the freedom to tell our own story, and the story of God's work in our lives, lead to greater healing?
**Luke 24:33-35***That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem, and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!" Then they told what had happened on the road and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.* (For context, read [Luke 24:13-35](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxjX0BWRsitWgnQn37OKWtIwO8TITKf59mGvIJJjtswfJM-2BQNKnciRJ37gfblf5K3Ajk_A_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmVj7pv75D-2FWEWa36mnCxDHl1IWQYCEtETXBpQq6gmZqG9QTBgNSubSeOLvBiMYamnIeU73vBpLQ-2FvPO51klTZ2at4uEClSt6ss4GYuIjalHxPW2QHpXixzGFflEXUEHKz1X8lTzX0REUzb5uLkVITmB8qbwcSsVBPRGbeickLHXkk8TyxQBjb09vkKs57-2BrFyyNNzbwyJgVLbiOrCuH43z2J9tnxPVNWlXqrJ0Gg19wP-2FLr-2Fi7Vzi6fITdsEzb9-2Ffj8k9FinFIwynego7mip9Dg-3D).)
Three days after the crucifixion of Jesus, two of his disciples were walking to the village of Emmaus, discussing what had happened, when Jesus joined them, but they didn't recognize him (vv. 13-16). He invited them to tell him what they were talking about (vv. 17-19). Then they told him not only of the events of the past week, but of the hope they had placed in Jesus, and of their confusion over the news they had heard from some of the women in their group who had gone to the tomb, where they had seen angels who declared that Jesus was alive (vv. 21-23).
Jesus then explained the meaning of what they had experienced, through the lens of the Scriptures, reigniting a fire of hope in their hearts that the empire and death itself did not have the last word. In fact, the living Christ himself was God's last word on that topic!
> **Questions:** Why was it important for the disciples to express the fullness of their grief, before they could hear how Jesus would reframe the meaning of their experience and recognize his presence with them at the table in the breaking of the bread? How does the way we tell our story and the story of God's involvement in the world change when we encounter the living Christ?
**For Further Discussion**
1. Consider this, from *Memoirs of Childhood and Youth*, by humanitarian and philosopher Albert Schweitzer: "Ideals are thoughts. So long as they exist merely as thoughts, the power latent in them remains ineffective, however great the enthusiasm, and however strong the conviction with which the thought is held. Their power only becomes effective when they are taken up into some refined human personality.
"The ripeness, then, that our development must aim at is one which makes us simpler, more truthful, purer, more peace-loving, meeker, kinder, more sympathetic. That is the only way in which we are to sober down with age. That is the process in which the soft iron of youthful idealism hardens into the steel of a full-grown idealism which can never be lost.
"No one who is always striving to refine his character can ever be robbed of his idealism, for he experiences in himself the power of the ideals of the good and the true."
How might the endeavor to refine one's character help preserve idealism? What happens when that endeavor seems to fail? How can one maintain hope, strengthen resolve, and avoid cynicism and despondency? What is the role of faith in this picture?
2. Moyers once asked Archbishop Desmond Tutu how people who read the same Bible and prayed to the same God could have such radically different views of major issues.
"We are human beings," Tutu replied, "who have been given, extraordinarily, by this God we worship the gift of freedom. ... God takes seriously the gift that God has given us. And we make choices. And the God, who is an omnipotent God, in many ways became impotent, because God has given us the gift to choose."
How are the sovereignty of God and human free will related? What are their limits or boundaries?
3. Choose one or more of these quotes from Bill Moyers to discuss:
● When all our efforts have come to nothing, we naturally tend to doubt not just ourselves, but also whether God is just. At those moments, our only hope is to seek every evidence that God is just, by communing with the people we know who are strongest in faith.
● I have seen hate born of fear, hate speaking in the name of God and truth, hate holding up a distorting mirror to fellow human beings.
● You only have to glance at the daily news to see how passions are stirred by claims of exclusive loyalty to one's own kin, one's own clan, one's own country, and one's own church. These ties that bind are vital to our communities and our lives, but they can also be twisted into a noose.
● I hear an almost inaudible but pervasive discontent with the price we pay for our current materialism. And I hear a fluttering of hope that there might be more to life than bread and circuses.
● Human beings are more than the sum of their material appetites, our country is more than an economic machine, and freedom is not license but responsibility.
● An unconscious people, an indoctrinated people, a people fed only partisan information and opinion that confirm their own bias, a people made morbidly obese in mind and spirit by the junk food of propaganda is less inclined to put up a fight, ask questions and be skeptical. And just as a democracy can die of too many lies, that kind of orthodoxy can kill us, too.
● We seem to prefer a comfortable lie to the uncomfortable truth. We punish those who point out reality, and reward those who provide us with the comfort of illusion. Reality is fearsome ... but experience tells us that more fearsome yet is evading it.
● All my life I've prayed the Lord's Prayer, but I've never prayed, "Give me this day my daily bread." It is always, "Give us this day our daily bread." Bread and life are shared realities. They do not happen in isolation. Civilization is an unnatural act. We have to make it happen, you and I, together with all the other strangers. ("Pass the Bread," 2006 baccalaureate address at Hamilton College, as quoted in *Moyers on Democracy*)
● Charity is commendable; everyone should be charitable. But justice aims to create a social order in which, if individuals choose not to be charitable, people still don't go hungry, unschooled or sick without care. Charity depends on the vicissitudes of whim and personal wealth; justice depends on commitment instead of circumstance. Faith-based charity provides crumbs from the table; faith-based justice offers a place at the table. (Jim Wallis, Bill Moyers, *Faith Works: How Faith-based Organizations are Changing Lives, Neighborhoods, and America*)

Consider this, from <em style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Memoirs of Childhood and Youth</em>, by humanitarian and philosopher Albert Schweitzer: "Ideals are thoughts. So long as they exist merely as thoughts, the power latent in them remains ineffective, however great the enthusiasm, and however strong the conviction with which the thought is held. Their power only becomes effective when they are taken up into some refined human personality.<br/><br/><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>"The ripeness, then, that our development must aim at is one which makes us simpler, more truthful, purer, more peace-loving, meeker, kinder, more sympathetic. That is the only way in which we are to sober down with age. That is the process in which the soft iron of youthful idealism hardens into the steel of a full-grown idealism which can never be lost.</span></p>
